In the lush, forested world between the earth and sky, sometimes it takes only a little thing to disrupt your concept of reality, forever. For Giels, it is an item of legend—a recorder—and the message it contains.

Giels has grown up believing he was destined for two things: One, becoming the Lead Storyteller of his tribe, and two, marrying his childhood sweetheart, Cleo. But all his carefully laid plans fall apart when their eccentric tech genius friend, Erikal, builds a miraculous new flying machine and offers them a journey beyond the ends of the known World.

Tomorrow was supposed to be Giels’s moment. Having passed the threshold to adulthood, he must prove his knowledge of the ancient stories for the shamans and secure his future in tribal leadership. But now all Cleo can talk about is this new adventure . . . and her growing affection for Erikal.

They leave before dawn. Will Giels honor his commitments and risk losing the love of his life? Or will he abandon everything he’s worked for to stay by her side, even if that means passing into lands no mortals were meant to enter—at the whims of a madman?

One thing is for certain: There are darker secrets behind those ancient stories than he ever dreamed of—and everything he thinks he knows about reality is about to change.

Part Journey to the Center of the Earth, Ringworld, Gormeghast, Lord of the Rings, and Mists of Avalon, with a splash of House of Leaves and a sprinkle of Jane Austin, this work is written in a crisp, immersive style. To Giels, his world is as real as your own, and he wants to bring you with him to strange places and new realities in this first installment of the epic serial, The Feigned Moon of Entiria.

In the tradition of Charles Dickens, The Count of Monte Cristo, and Worm, The Feigned Moon of Entiria will be distributed over time as parts (called episodes) in a serialized fashion, starting with The Journey.

The feigned moon is a speculative sci-fi fantasy story about Giel, who has just turned 18. He has to recite a traditional story in front of his father, who is the shaman council leader and the people of his tribe. If he succeeds, he can then be considered to have a lead role as a storyteller.

Giel has a friend named Cleo. He has not seen her for a long time, and as he goes hunting for the tribe one day, he sees Cleo. She isn’t alone. Erikal is with her. The feeling of jealousy and curiosity takes over Giel. Erikal hands him some recorder and tells him that it contains a message inside, which wonders Giel’s mind. He wants to go with them, but if he misses the ceremony, he also loses his one and only chance.
The message in the recorder, Giel’s father, the tribe’s expectations over Giel, and the shaman councils doubts about Erikal’s intentions all build up creating an epic story. Losing Cloe is out of the question. His feelings for her are powerful, and therefore, when she asks him to join her, the story takes on another level.

The sci-fi wasn’t as strong as I thought it would be considering the genre, but it was very fitting for the story. I particularly enjoyed the constant sway of heart and emotions Giel was under. His position and role as the son of the leader, how much he wanted to please his family, but at the same time, his heart, love for Cloe was charming.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read new adult college fantasy and coming of age stories.

Keeps you guessing

I won this book as a Goodreads giveaway. This book felt like a M Night Shamalan film in many ways. The characters were interesting and the setting allowed the reader to guess about what would it wouldn't happen.

I received a free copy of this book through a Goodreads giveaway.
I hate writing reviews like this one. The book had potential, I feel. The world and lore sound interesting. But the characters fall flat. I could not connect with or care for any of them. Part of it is the dialogue. It does not seem to flow naturally. Another part of it was the constant back-and-forth will we-won't we during the adventure. It was exhausting to keep reading about the characters changing their minds and then seconds or minutes later changing them again, only to change back. My gosh. It was hard to slog through. I grew to deeply dislike the main character, too, which I do not think is the author's intention.
I wanted to enjoy this book more but I did not. The one saving grace is that it is short. I have read many series where the second book is much better than the first, and I hope that is the case for this series. But I am not going to be looking for opportunities to read the second in this series.

I am hooked!

I was hooked from the first page. Is an 8th grade teacher ( now retired) I have a passion for young adult books and
I have read and reread many. This story is unique and keeps the reader clawing at all that they have in their imagination to pull up images that the writer describes. What is this? A society that values many of the supernatural facets of Native American culture but also easily coexists with a level of technology that is hard for even the most knowledgeable of modern humans to image? Oh yes: then there is allusion to magic! I finished book 1 wanting more. Wondering “What the heck?” Trying to imagine how I would continue the story. Hurry up E.A. Bagby and release the next book!

Originally, refreshing and fun

The Author created a rich, deep world that fused science fiction and fantasy. I’d say if your looking for a quick read (it’s a novella serial) that drops you into a world that is not filled with the normal Sci Fi or fantasy themes, this is it. I enjoyed the originality and not feeling like I’d read this before, Like with so many other books I read. The story presents a group of people who are both technologically advanced yet steeped in mythology. Our hero experiences a paradigm shift when he ventures on a voyage that will challenge his beliefs, traditions and very existence.

Intriguing mysteries unfold within a fantastic new realm

This novice author has a gift for world-building, described with precise and eloquent turns of phrase. I can't wait to read more about Giels and his friends, and to find out whether they solve the mysteries in the depths of their world.

A great book for YA fans that enjoy stories which require figuring out the setting before getting into the story. Very imaginative!
