A chilling, fast-moving, and captivating page-turner told in the aftermath of the great Leprechaun Wars. While the Emerald Isle lies ravished in famine, young Gwydion of the Clan O'Dubney rises from the ashes of defeat after his father is brutally murdered by the King. Gwydion narrowly escapes the King's wrath by seeking a safe harbor on the Isle of Darkness. During his travels, Gwydion runs afoul of the King's most despicable enforcer, a vicious hunchback known to all as Extor the Cruel. Along the way, he has a spine-tingling encounter with the dreaded Caoronach, whose erotic allure almost proves fatal. While planning his ultimate revenge on King Ortho, Gwydion buys time by hiding out among the world of the humans. During his adventures in this bewildering new world, he finds both love and internal conflict as he struggles to decide his future path. Gwydion has his ultimate revenge in a spellbinding return to the Emerald Isle. The aftermath is a poignant and satisfying conclusion to this truly enjoyable epic. Although the novel is listed as a 'Fantasy,' the incredible underlying story is suitable fodder for mature readers of all genres.
This is a story about two leprechaun clans, one good, the other bad. Fast pace, good story, believable characters. I found this story to be a very exciting fantasy read. I recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy.
Set in Ireland of the 1840's, this story is about Gwydion O'Dubney, son of a rival clan leader who is murdered at the hands of King Ortho. Gwydion's narrow escape cause Ortho to spare no expense to get him back (and kill anyone who he even suspects of knowing his whereabouts). Ortho's top enforcer, a hunchback name Extor the Cruel (the name is richly deserved) is hot on his heels.
Many people want Extor, and his son, Horluxx the Head, to die in the most painful way possible. After that is accomplished, focus turns to Ortho. It will take time to build an army against him. It is decided to strike against him at a special event several years in the future. While preparations are being made, Gwydion must hide. His capture would mean the end of the rebellion, and Ortho's obsession with him has gone to the next level (like it or not, Gwydion is now head of Clan O'Dubney). Gwydion decides to live in the world of humans, returning twice a year for progress reports.
While living among humans, Gwydion falls for a widow living alone on a farm. They have a son together. When the time comes, to move against King Ortho, Gwydion faces a heartbreaking choice: stay with the woman he loves, as a human, or return to his people? Does Gwydion fulfill his blood oath to his father/ Does King Ortho get what he so richly deserves?
This is a really good novel. It's got action, suspense and some romance. There is lots of good writing, and this book will keep the reader interested.
“The Leprechaun Wars”, by Wes Snowden, is the first book I have read by this author. I would classify this as Epic Fantasy Genre, which I do not ordinarily read. However, I loved this book and could not put it down.
The story is set in Ireland in the 1840’s after The Great Leprechaun war. The main character of the book is Gwydion O’Dubney, of The Clan O’Dubney, who watches his father’s death at the hands of King Ortho. Gwydion manages to escape death to the Isle of Darkness to seek safety and swears vengeance on King Ortho; however he soon has to leave to remain safe.
He has many adventures along the way including joining the human world for awhile to remain safe. He has to wait until he reaches maturity, which will increase his powers, to lead the rebellion against King Ortho. He finds romance, adventure, suspense and danger during the course of his journey.
Will Gwydion succeed in his quest for vengeance? Will King Ortho succeed in the capture of Gwydion and continue to reign with terror over all? This book leaves open the possibility of a sequel, which I would love to read.
Wes Snowden did an amazing job describing the settings of the surroundings in this world he created as well as character building. I would recommend this book to anyone particularly those interested in the Epic Fancy Genre. The book is well written keeping the reader interested. There are no spelling or grammatical errors in this book.
Set in the aftermath of the great Leprechaun Wars of 1845, Snowden masterfully combines vivid characterization and a fantastic worldbuilding in this gripping fantasy.
After his father’s brutal death at the hands of the ruthless King ortho, Gwydion, the young heir to the clan, escapes and finds refuge in the Isle of Darkness, and eventually in the alternate world of humans. But he must return to the Emerald Isle and avenge his father’s death.
Gwyidon’s quest of seeking revenge through a dangerous landscape is filled with action and intrigue, making it as bloody and suspenseful as the epic fantasy fans usually expect. Snowden describes his alternate fantasy worlds in crisp, elegant prose, and the plot threads of romance and political intrigue keep the readers thoroughly invested.
With its thrilling action, layered narrative, and verbose imagery, the book makes for a highly engrossing read.
“The Leprechaun Wars: A fast paced thriller set in two different worlds” is a book written by Wes Snowden, a born storyteller. The cover of the book is very attractive and as soon as I saw it, I wanted to read the story. It is an epic tale set in the aftermath of the leprechaun wars of 1845. The story is fast and once I started reading it, I could not put it down. It is definitely a page turner. The writer did a great job with this novel because it is well written and really enjoyable. There are many twists and turns that make it even more captivating. It is a good read for teens, young adults and adults as well. The fantasy depicted here is so well portrayed that would be enjoyed by any type of reader. I am giving it four out of five stars because it is a book that deserves them. I will surely recommend reading it.
I really did not know what to expect when I started reading this book. Fantasy is really not my style - but, boy oh boy, did I enjoy it!
I don’t want to give away any of the plot lines but the story is multi faceted - pulling you on from one story line setting to the next - all equally enjoyable. I could not wait to find out what happened next. What a world - or worlds - the hero inhabits. The author has to be congratulated on his creations.
Although the novel comes to an excellent ending, it is obvious that there could be a second - or third? - sequel to come. I look forward to it.
Technically, this was well written and the general idea and plot was solid...there's just something about it that I couldn't get behind-something was missing and there was really no depth to the main character. I kind of felt like I was reading a story written by an old unhealthy guy who can't just call anything related to going to the bathroom or private parts by their actual name but can have the main character hook up with a friends underage child, but as leprachauns their life spans are way longer so that justifies it? I don't know....my recommendation is to skip this very polished and boring story.
OMG, does this book pull you in. I enjoyed the characters development and the entire story. I was in a bit of a slump, and couldn't really read anything, but after starting this, I couldn't stop-and now I have a book hangover. the ending alludes to a sequel and I love that in this case. it is my first book from this author but boy, do I want to read more from now on. I would say give it a try even if it may not be in your typical reading genres
ARC provided by the publisher through #NetGalley for an honest review
What an amazing novel! I had no idea what to expect, but I have read several of this author's novels and trust his work, and this book was no different than his other stellar outings.
Imaginative, exciting, scary at times, and brilliantly plotted, this novel is a must read.
I thought this was an amazing book, couldn’t put it down. I loved the fact that the ending left it open to a possible sequel. I think it would make an incredible HBO or Netflix series and would give Game of of Thrones a run for its money.
An excellent story, gripping and entertaining, that kept on the edge till the last page. Great world building, great characters and an excellent storytelling. It's strongly recommended. Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
I was given a free copy of Leprechaun Wars by Wes Snowden, the author, Corvent Creative, and Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.
Leprechaun Wars is the first by Mr. Snowden that I have read. I think I would characterize this novel as epic fantasy with having an Irish Folklore focus.
This review will not contain any spoilers.
Mr. Snowden did commendable job in the world-building and creating the setting. I really liked the way wove bits of Irish Folklore into the story. It was fascinating to read about the logistics of how a leprechaun operates in the leprechaun world as well as the world of people. I enjoyed reading about the side characters and would have preferred if they were featured a bit more in the story.
What I did not like about Leprechaun Wars was the character arc of the main character. It seemed things were happening to the main character and not the character instigating events through making choices or decisions. I was more interested in reading about the war aspect of the story and less of the adventures of the main character in the world of people.
I thought another thing about this novel was the story was not complex. It seemed like the main character did not have to struggle to overcome any of the obstacles after the death of his father in the beginning of the story. If the main character had to take care of villain, he had no problems taking care of business. It was not the main character had special skills or traits, but more like a victim (for lack of better word) of circumstances.
The prose is clean and does not appear to have any grammatical or spelling errors.
I will rate this novel 3 stars.
I would like to thank Wes Snowden, Corvent Creative, and Net Galley for the free ARC.
