We'll Meet Again

Rate this book
A house with a forgotten history. A resident with a secret past. A woman starting over, unsure what the future holds.

Working as an Occupational Therapist in a busy London hospital, Cassie loves her job but is looking forward to early retirement in five years when she reaches fifty. However, her husband has other ideas…

Suddenly single, Cassie needs a fresh start. Responding to an ad for a live-in position, Cassie arrives at Fletchling Hall, a grand stately home, its corridors echoing with stories from the past.

Her new position seems too good to be true, living in a cottage in the grounds, the commute into work a glorious stroll through the gardens to the imposing house in the Sussex countryside.

In the cellar, a forgotten diary has languished undisturbed for nearly seventy years. When Cassie discovers the diary, she unravels the heartfelt story of two young souls from the war years, and a little boy called Ted, a young evacuee. It reveals the surprising connection Cassie, a Canadian, has to the house and its resident.

An unforgettable tale of a secret spanning decades, love found, and the importance of belonging.

Elise Darcy grew up in North London in the 1970's, the daughter of two baby boomer school teachers. Her love of books began at an early age when trips to Regent's Park always culminated in a visit to Foyles, the legendary independent bookstore in Charing Cross Road. She has fond memories of exploring a veritable Aladdin’s cave of books; a magical place with winding staircases, old creaking lifts, and cosy corners in which to settle down and lose herself in a good book.

After university Elise Darcy worked in London before embarking on her writing career. She now lives in an apartment in a picturesque market town in Suffolk where she writes her novels.

Page turner

I started reading and couldn’t put the book down. The story begins with a marriage on the rocks, a boorish husband and a lost love

Cassie is an Occupational Therapist at a busy London hospital. She is married to a doctor, Lars. They own a perfect apartment. Cassie is good at what she does. Lars is a jerk and treats her like she does not matter, mostly because to him, she does not matter. Lars has found a younger woman, and she is pregnant. The fact that Lars told Cassie he did not want children evidently no longer means anything. The perfect apartment must be sold. I liked the idea that she sold it undervalued along with all the furniture.

Cassie goes back to a small village to work in a home for people who need care. The home is on a large estate. There are only 4 patients and an equally small staff. The home is going to be closed and the estate sold. That is the story.

In fact, the estate is part of her father’s memories. During WWII he was evacuated from London. He was made to feel welcome when he was at the estate. Then he fell into a terrible government plan and was sent to Canada. In fact, the British government took many children who actually had families and sent them to different countries. Now, Martin, Cassie’s father is writing a book about his experiences.

Cassie was in the area years ago, and she met the love of her life. Then he broke up with her, and she never knew why. Now that she is back in the area, her memories are coming back.

She has a lot going on with her job and the patients and the perfect cat who finds her.

This is a story of the patients and staff and how life goes forward when people need help to thrive. The patients and staff are wonderfully involved in the story. It is a story of family relationships and how they grow well or not.

It is also a story of Cassie and her life and dreams. She has a lot of opportunity to think and evaluate and determine what are priorities for her.

Most of all, it is a story from a small diary found in the basement of the home. It is by a young girl who lived through the war. Sadly, the diary never tells the end of her story.

The plot of this book is a great one. But, the first 1/3 of the book was so slow, I nearly quite several times. If I had quit, I would have missed a lovely story.

There were no huge surprises here. A good portion of the story was obvious. But, it is a good story and well worth the complete read.

I liked the characters. No one is a perfect person. No one is completely evil. But, everyone is an important part of the story. Everyone adds a depth and texture to the book.

This is a new to me author and she has done a good job with this story. My only suggestion would be to do a little more editing and a little less adding descriptions to every sentence and chapter. Show me, don’t tell me.

I loved the premise of the book and did finish it. However, I was put off by repetition and grammar/punctuation errors (PLEASE at least change "mute point" to "moot point" at the end of chapter 54). I also felt as though the author was often trying to catch us up with missing information. I would be reading and all of a sudden an earlier reference would be given more substance. I wanted to give four stars but couldn't for the above reasons.

We’ll Meet Again: A captivating story of lost love, hope, and the power of friendship. Elise Darcy

What can one say when I have just finished a book so wonderful, full of different themes moving through the story at the same time. It also travels so many decades across the twentieth century. I thoroughly enjoyed this book so much I just hated to put it down to eat my meals. Thank you Elise Darcy 💕

War time friends reunited

Cassie gets a job working at Fletching Hall caring for the few residents along with other staff. Evelyn one of the oldest keeps sitting at the window waiting for her love to return when he went off to war. Ruby had been in a car accident and had impaired speech. A cat called Tabitha, a cottage in the garden, a diary and an old valve radio. Thoroughly enjoyable read

Spelling mistakes and plot holes

While the overall idea behind this book sounds great there are spelling mistakes, for example using 'there' and 'your' incorrectly and spelling names wrong multiple times throughout the book that a simple proof read would fix. There are also plot holes a plenty and changes in characters point of view woven throughout. Not a great book overall. Disappointing

Great story but lots of errors.

I found this a good read, even with the unbelievable amount of coincidences. It did jump around a little bit, but I still found it enjoyable on the whole. However it needs proof- reading to get rid of the mistakes (e.g. "raise" to the ground instead of raze and at the end Evelyn and Jack!)

I did enjoy this, especially the story surrounding her family and the connections from the past, although there were rather too many coincidences. I didn’t like the love story element as I really quite disliked the hero, he came across as shallow and moody and I didn’t feel the long lasting deep connection between the two main characters that there was supposed to be.

This was a slow starter for me and it took me a while to warm to Cassie who was too weak and wimpy by a long way. However the story was fascinating and the whole concept of the very young children being transported to Canada was one I was unaware of and was heartbreaking. I've read many of Elise's books and this was one of the best.

While the idea behind the story may have been good about evacuees during the war, I found the amount of coincidences just made it so unbelievable. I read to the end even though I’m not sure why as I could see where it was going.

DNF - Not for me - the main character immediately frustrated me. Stopped at 6%. Shame as it had such high reviews on here.
