Cassie is an Occupational Therapist at a busy London hospital. She is married to a doctor, Lars. They own a perfect apartment. Cassie is good at what she does. Lars is a jerk and treats her like she does not matter, mostly because to him, she does not matter. Lars has found a younger woman, and she is pregnant. The fact that Lars told Cassie he did not want children evidently no longer means anything. The perfect apartment must be sold. I liked the idea that she sold it undervalued along with all the furniture.
Cassie goes back to a small village to work in a home for people who need care. The home is on a large estate. There are only 4 patients and an equally small staff. The home is going to be closed and the estate sold. That is the story.
In fact, the estate is part of her father’s memories. During WWII he was evacuated from London. He was made to feel welcome when he was at the estate. Then he fell into a terrible government plan and was sent to Canada. In fact, the British government took many children who actually had families and sent them to different countries. Now, Martin, Cassie’s father is writing a book about his experiences.
Cassie was in the area years ago, and she met the love of her life. Then he broke up with her, and she never knew why. Now that she is back in the area, her memories are coming back.
She has a lot going on with her job and the patients and the perfect cat who finds her.
This is a story of the patients and staff and how life goes forward when people need help to thrive. The patients and staff are wonderfully involved in the story. It is a story of family relationships and how they grow well or not.
It is also a story of Cassie and her life and dreams. She has a lot of opportunity to think and evaluate and determine what are priorities for her.
Most of all, it is a story from a small diary found in the basement of the home. It is by a young girl who lived through the war. Sadly, the diary never tells the end of her story.
The plot of this book is a great one. But, the first 1/3 of the book was so slow, I nearly quite several times. If I had quit, I would have missed a lovely story.
There were no huge surprises here. A good portion of the story was obvious. But, it is a good story and well worth the complete read.
I liked the characters. No one is a perfect person. No one is completely evil. But, everyone is an important part of the story. Everyone adds a depth and texture to the book.
This is a new to me author and she has done a good job with this story. My only suggestion would be to do a little more editing and a little less adding descriptions to every sentence and chapter. Show me, don’t tell me.
