The ending felt too rushed, that's what brought the rating down.
If it were me, I'd never forgive Yuzu's mom, the damage she inflicted on the child isn't that easy to be forgiven. I loved every bit of this manga, some things felt rushed and made no sense at times, but that doesn't mean that it was an adorable manga that touched on some heavy topics like suicide, abuse, sex, and teenage pregnancy (though that was really mishandled here) among other things.
I enjoyed this manga a lot, Kippei and Yuzu are the cutest siblings, and Yuzu is the most adorable child I've seen in a manga. <3
I really enjoyed reading this manga! It was very touching and their brother and sister relationship was soooooo sweet!! I loved how he made lunch for her everyday :3
The only thing I had a problem with really was that the ending seemed kinda rushed. I didn't think the mother was ready to take her daughter back just yet... (But I also didn't want to see them part...)
Other than that, great read!

The ending of this manga felt rather abrupt: Yuzuyu's sixth birthday comes along, her mother arrives and takes her back. The end. There were hints that ending the story this soon was done reluctantly on the author's part, so perhaps the editorial staff of the magazine this story was serialized in made that decision for her.
There was a strong foundation for a "found family" story that was fulfilled in part with Kokoro joining the Kitamura household, and maybe I'm just being spoiled in thinking that the ending would be more satisfactory if Yuzuyu had also stayed with them until she grew up. The ending as-is is more "realistic" than "happy," to me, but she seems like she's doing well with her mother and stepdad, and that's all that a reader could ask for.
Having the basic situation in the manga go on for much longer could have led to Yuzuyu not remembering her mother except as a vague concept, and her being separated from Kippei becoming a second instance of trauma. It's nice when a manga doesn't drag out, with situations getting more repetitive or implausible as they go along. There's no sense that there were plot threads cut short here. So it all worked out.
I liked that this manga was emotional but not melodramatic. Nothing that happened was over-the-top. There were no connivers interfering with the family or coming between Kippei and Kokoro, and no horrible misunderstandings. How refreshing! On the whole, it was an easy, pleasant read with serious topics handled in a low-key, sensitive way.

Ultimately, this was a 3.5 for me. It was well-drawn and I liked the series a lot so far, but this last volume brought the series down for me. The ending was rushed and I just plain didn't like it. Still, the characters are charismatic and adorable, so I couldn't bring myself to make it a 3 overall.
It's cute fun and short. But don't expect a whole lot out of the end.
THAT WAS SO SAD OMG! I’D LIKE A REFUND ON MY ENDING THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!
This really pulled on the heartstrings! I really wish that they got a more complete ending. I would be satisfied if there were two more pages, showing how everyone looks older. But alas, all we could see was Yuzu.
I found the art style in this one to be toned down compared to the last. I don’t know if it’s because I haven’t read manga for a bit or if it’s the art itself. The art does have problems with some things through it all, but I got used to it.
The major thing that I had a problem with had to be either the family’s “whatever. yeah, fine” responses to a lot of things or the super busy covers.
Can’t believe this ended like this. Now to go into the customary series ending shock.
This was a sweet ending. I liked the little epilogue. This volume had me pretty sad, as it was the end and Yuzu was leaving and all. Overall, I really enjoyed this series. It wasn't afraid to discuss serious or difficult issues, but it was still funny and light enough that the story didn't feel bogged down. It was different from what I usually read, and I'm very happy to have stumbled upon it.
I really did enjoy these mangas about a little 5 year old girl being dumped on a young man who is just trying to finish high school and be with any beautiful girl he sees and how they change each others lives. Although I this one left me a little flat at the end. I feel I jumped ahead 6-10 years with out any knowledge it was going to jump that far.
Kippei has a reputation of being a playboy and for not caring all too much about school. His whole daily routine is thrown upside down when his 5-year old cousin Yuzuyu is delivered to his home. After the death of Yuzuyu's father, her mother has found herself unable to care for Yuzuyu and has thus sent her to live with her relatives. Kippei doesn't know much about childcare but he finds himself enjoying his time spent with Yuzuyu and the two form a bond.
Although I really like Maki Yōko, I have never read this early work of hers until now. I appreciate Maki's works not only for the art but also for often breaking free of shoujo norms. Aishiteruze Baby was no exception in this regard, although that was probably also part of the reason why I hadn't picked it up sooner. When this was originally published, I'd be lying if I'd say I cared much for stories about childcare. In addition, I found the covers very unappealing - I'm afraid I still do as they are so awfully busy and crowded. Nonetheless, after years of reading Maki's works I thought it was finally time to give this one a go.
I don't think this manga will work for everyone because similar to me a couple of years ago, not everyone will be interested in the childcare aspect of this manga. I imagine many people will pick up a shoujo romance expecting exactly that: romance. And while this manga does have some romance, its focus is without a doubt on the relationship between Kippei and Yuzuyu as well as how she deals with feelings of abandonment. As a whole, this is a very heartfelt story with great relationships. A lot of the side characters initially come across as rather annoying but the plot takes some time to let us get to know them and this is one of the few manga I've ever read where pretty much all characters are likeable.
I really liked Kippei as a main character, although I'm tempted to say that he was unrealistically kind to everyone which also made his bad reputation seem a bit weird. There is a generally degree of things not being very realistic in this story to begin with: it's certainly not unheard of but I do find Yuzuyu's mother's behaviour a little questionable. Kokoro - Kippei's love interest - also seems to have a rather odd relationship to her parents and I found it a tad unrealistic how she could just up and move in with people in the blink of an eye.
Otherwise, this was a really nice plot that explores various aspects of childcare and family issues. And while those might sound like heavy subjects, this is mostly a lighthearted feel good manga. Yuzuyu is a little ray of sunshine, Kokoro seems a little stoic but turns out to be really cute once she loosens up a bit. The romance between Kippei and Kokoro initially seemed to come a little out of nowhere but I actually really enjoyed how their relationship developed.
I struggled a little with Maki's art in the first chapters - I love her style but this earlier work often leaves characters with oddly blank eyes. I think in the beginning Yuzuyu was the only character I found aesthetically well done. By the end of the series, the art isn't quite what it is in her latest works but it's definitely beautifully drawn and featuring characters with expressive faces where no text is required.
The ending was a tad rushed and I wouldn't have minded a more detailed epilogue, but it doesn't take away from the over all experience reading this manga. As long as you aren't looking purely for a romance manga and enjoy stories revolving around little children, this is definitely a cute and worthwhile pick.
In keeping with tradition, my review for the final title in a manga series is always the review for the entire series...so I'll be marking the rest of it in "spoilers," just in case you haven't read this far yet.
Final thoughts: not a horrible series, but not the greatest either. Fun if you're looking for a cute shojo, but there are so many other series out there which are so much better that I'm not entirely sure I would actually steer you towards this one. Just saying.

Re-read April 2023: An unfortunately lackluster ending to the series. While I really enjoyed the concept, the artwork, and the characters (especially Kippei), Aishiteruze Baby had a pretty weak story. The ending is yet another example of a rushed and over-simplified plot resolution, and overall the series didn't feel well planned out. Ah, well. It was still nice to revisit this manga from my childhood. 2.5 stars
TW: parental abandonment, teen unplanned pregnancy scare
I enjoyed reading the entire series. The ending was bittersweet and felt a bit rushed, but I still liked it. Yuzuyu is the cutest human being. I enjoyed the entire dynamic with her. The relationship between Kippei and Kokoro was well-thought, even though there were some missing marks that could have been explored more.
The ending was WAY too rushed - what needed a whole chapter on its own only received 3 pages. Otherwise, it was a wonderful final volume to a heartwarming series that turned out to be much more than I was anticipating.
That moment when Kippei helped Yuzuyu run back to her mother… oh god *sobs*
I loved this series more than I thought I would. I really did judge it by its cover. I loved reading about Yuzu and Kippei. Their bond was so damn adorable!!!
La verdad me da recuerdos este manga porque ya lo dije con otro manga pero también fue uno de los primeros mangas que leí Incluso ví su anime (que siendo sincera lo ví por Youtube y creo que no estaba completo el anime).
You know a manga is so freaking good when the second that you read the last page and you close it, you want to re-read all over again. PS: I´m definitely tearing up right now after this ending.
This story got totally randomly on my to-read list and has been there for more than 4 months until one night I just started reading it out of blue. I finished it in less then 3 hours and loved it a lot. It has an interesting concept and the ending quite sucked, because it didn’t quite show if Kippei ended up with Kokoro-chan. Though I sure hope it was implied. Because if not, I’m booking a plane ticket to Japan to band on the author’s door to know the truth.
The story is fantastic. It shows how our lives can be changed in a matter o a minute. One day you are a normal high school student who’s very frivolous with girls, but then one day a 5-year-old appears on the porch of your house and your sister puts you in charge of taking care of her. Fun? As if! You get tons of problems because of her. You’ll have to learn how to cook, take care of a kid and eventually you’ll find the person who will be closest to you in the future. Are you ready to get to know Kippei? Our frivolous guy who is taking care of his cousin? He’s a fantastic character, that I really enjoyed. I also loved Kokoro-chan, Kippei’s love interest. She’s awesome, she reminded me of myself a lot, but I have yet to fall in love.
Enjoy this romantic, yet tragic in some cases story. You’ll get to see what it means to be a parent and you need to read closely as there will be lots of issues that you have to know about! Enjoy it to your fullest and don’t forget to share your thoughts below! Stay tuned for more reviews as well as promos. Don’t miss your next favourite book or manga! Happy reading!
(Full series review, as I read all seven volumes in one day.)
This is one of the most endearing manga series I've ever read. Kippei and Yuzuyu's relationship is incredibly sweet without crossing the line into saccharine, and I wound up adoring the main love interest. I don't usually go for such blatantly cute stories, but this grabbed my heartstrings and didn't let go; I think I'll have to buy a set of my own.
This manga was cute overall but not really memorable in my opinion. My favorite character was Yuzuyu just because she was so cute and friendly to everyone. Even though I understand the attitude of Kippei and what he is supposed to be portraying I never like him, not even when he was with Yuzuyu. Overall it was a pleasant and nice reading experience. I would check out the anime though because I felt it to be a great deal more entertaining than reading the manga.
This book was so sad. Yuzuyu and Kippei would have made great siblings. But, I understand why she wanted to be with her mom. Even though her mom left, Yuzu still needed her.
I like that near the end how they show Yuzu as a a teenager. I really enjoyed this series. I wish it had been a little longer.
A fun series from beginning to end with some nicely done serious notes as well. Even though I knew what the final scene had to be, it was genuinely touching, a rare experience for me in manga.
