She was born into the life…
…and the underworld was all she knew.

Will she choose vengeance or extreme vengeance?

Brooklyn abhorred violence. Then they killed her best friend. She never fit in with the Syndicate crowd, her compassion mixed with a knack for inappropriate snarkiness, didn’t make her too many friends. It made her fiercely loyal to the few she had.

Losing one would not go unpunished.

But she couldn’t do it alone.

He was handsome, stubborn, and believed in honor above all else, but he was also broken. When she met Dominic, a panther shifter, they shared a common goal. The Syndicate killed his entire family, and he needed payback. Could she get him to trust her?

It wouldn’t be easy.

The Council ruled with an iron hand.

You’ll adore this Urban Fantasy, because vampires and shifters make for the best thrill rides, and you’ll love the twists.

Fast paced, exceptional read. Brooklyn is a great FMC. Total kick ass. Sarcastic. Do anything for her loved ones type of character. Her backstory is still a bit of a mystery. Which at this point I think it’s great. By book 2, hoping we have some answers. Very interesting character.

MC is Dominic. He hates everything that Brooklyn is. Yet he can’t bring himself to kill her. As their situation forces him to get to know her, he realizes there’s much more to her that he thought.

Let me just say, Alice is one of my favorite characters. This chic would come on the scene and make me laugh every time. Really looking forward to book 2!

Happy reading,

this is the first book in the series and it has an incredible beginning characters. Brooklyn is a very strong attua and she has more morals for so many other of these a two I do not. to go any further would be to give you a lot of spoilers so I'm simply going to say that if you are in the magic vampires werewolves that sort of thing you're going to love this read the first book going to the second one I did read them out of water but oh well the second one gets even better and I can't wait to see what the third continues with

Black Hand is the first book in the Infernal Regions for the Unprepared series and we meet up with Brooklyn, Dominic, and Alice. Brooklyn and Dominic are (apparently) natural enemies and Alice is just a mere human but she is more than capable of holding her own against these two!

Wow! Okay, where do I start? Okay, first of all, you might think there is less action in this one but, trust me, it works. I absolutely loved the fact that although the pacing is still fast, there is time to stop and breathe and appreciate the connection between Brooklyn and Dominic. Also, that gave me time to feel the full impact of Veronica!!

The world- and scene-building are exceptional, giving the reader a nicely rounded view of Brooklyn's world and how different she feels. The emotions are vivid and I was caught up on every word.

This is an amazing start to a new series. I am a fan of Maya Daniels and have enjoyed everything she has written but, this one? Off the freakin' charts!!!! Loved every word. Absolutely and utterly recommended!

* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and the comments here are my honest opinion. *

She smirked, he smirked, we all smirked.

1.5/5

It seems like a lot happened in this book.. but when you think about it nothing actually did. We just learned a few things and there were a couple of insignificant fights.

I didn't enjoy the writing style at all, but that could just be me. If I read that the two main characters smirked at each other or she ducked her head embarrassed one more time because she was so interested in him I was going to go insane. That being repeated was about 40% of the book. But really... I've never cared less to hear about facial expressions and those types of details until this book. Usually they helped, this time they were just repetitive and annoying.

The main heroine ended up being weak and kind of dumb; I didn't like her personality. The main guy was her knight-in-shining-armor who had a deep resentment for her kind, so he distrusted her, but they couldn't help themselves around each other. Some force made them interested in each other against all odds. Honestly, didn't feel like the guy or anyone even had much of a personality, except maybe the main heroine's best friend that died and one of her antagonists (Jonathan).

So, while we were told that this heroine was amazing and powerful, we only witness it once. The rest of the time she was being saved by the guy. Even the time after she did something on her own she needed saving. Bleh.

Anyway.. the storyline wasn't terrible. I could get behind it. Sure, it's kind of similar to ones I've read before, but it had potential. I just don't think it was executed that well.

Brooklyn is working for the Syndicate. She has no other options in working for them. Brooklyn is able to deal with being there due to her friend Veronica. Brooklyn and Veronica just completed a job and is back. They are told both of them are due at the celebration. Brooklyn needs to go somewhere to make sure everything is going to plan. Some knows where she was and who she was with. She gets back for the celebration, Veronica is there to help her. The syndicate is attacked, Brooklyn helps the attacker to get away. Brooklyn is brought to the Council, the worst things happens for Brooklyn. Brooklyn is rescued by an unlikely person.
Brooklyn wakes up in a different location with the shifter she saved. Domenic doesn't trust her, would have killed her if he could. Together, they go check on Brooklyn's friend Alice. The human that has been helping her save the shifter's lives she was supposed to kill. They bring the syndicate to Alice's door, they have to find another location. They can try to out run the Syndicate it is a matter of time before they find her. Brooklyn and Domenic will have to work together in their goals but can Brooklyn get Domenic to trust her.

This was a fast paced book from the start. You have a character that doesn't agree with going on. Trying to do the right thing, she hides behind this tough persona. She has a friend that is family to her. You will see this character slowly start to learn about her family and what she might possibly be. Love the banter Alice has with Brooklyn and Domenic, she is so funny. You will love the build between Brooklyn and Domenic. This book will have you hooked and wanting more when your are done. I recommend reading this book.

I am new to this author, and I had to catch up on her earlier titles because I loved the title I started with so much. This second book I’ve read by her was so much fun. It’s a little dark with these very light moments. I just adored Brooklyn, Alice, Veronica, and Dominic. Oh, and I can’t forget the shifter Doggy. LOL! While there wasn’t much action, there was plenty of character development and setup for the next installment; I can’t wait to find out more about Brooklyn and Alice’s past. This book only whetted my appetite for the next one. Wonderful, well-written urban fantasy! Highly recommend.

This was an amazing start to a new series. Brooklyn, Dominic and Alice are an unlikely team! However I reckon they are destined to great things and a bond for life. The chemistry between Brooklyn and Dominic, is brewing for something sizzling hot!
The syndicate like to be the most powerful players and eradicate anyone who threatens that. They've been hiding things from Brooklyn as well. These things alone are gonna come back and bite them.. probably literally!! Dominic has a massive beef with them too and there is more to him, than we know at the moment. I'm sure of that.
Up to Maya's usual standard of story telling, the story flows well and is so hard to put down. I really enjoyed this and look forward to more in this series. Highly recommend.

I received a free copy of this book, in return for an honest review.

I'm officially addicted to Maya Daniels' books, how could you not be?? They're so easy to read and fast paced, they have supernatural creatures and romance, plenty of banter - and of course, a sassy main character. Seriously, what's not to love?? These books are exactly what I need to wind down.

I struggled a teeny bit at the beginning. Once it got to the 25% mark, it really took off. I did not want to put the book down at all after that. It just reached a new level of excitement with more action and banter between the characters.

The chemistry between the main trio is brilliant. Their whole dynamic is, in fact, brilliant. They seem totally mismatched, and yet they're so right together. Here's a short quote as an example: "If you take away the whole chewing on the neck part, you are actually a very nice person." This made me LOL. There are more laugh-out-loud moments, but you'll have to read for them!!

The main character is witty, like I expect Maya's leads to be at this stage. But she also seems haunted... which adds another dimension to her character. I will admit, I'm a tiny bit confused by her reasoning sometimes? I can't explain why because I don't want to spoil anything for anyone, but I don't understand how she thinks what she does is any better than the alternative at the start of the book. (I really hope that isn't giving away too much!)

I want need to start the next book immediately. I have a feeling there's a lot more secrets to be revealed... and I'm still questioning things from early on in the book - before certain revelations :O The ending promises much more excitement, and I'm also fully on board with any romantic developments.

needs and editor and an ending

I hate to write bad reviews because writing and creating a whole world and characters isn’t easy, but this book is only worth reading if you have kindle unlimited and it is free. I spent more time reading with an editor’s eye than as a reader. There are missing words, too much passive voice, and over explanations about scenes. You don’t have to tell me (several times) that “it was surreal.” If you have just described a surreal scene. Like many of the kindle unlimited titles this book reads like a self published book that fails to meet its potential because it lacked a professional editor. As Stephen King once wrote, “to write is human, to edit is divine.” It’s a real shame, and I hope the writer continues to work at their craft and find the help (and learns from) a skilled editor. Secondly, the end of the book felt like it was designed to force you to read a second book to have any manner of resolution of plot. (It felt more like it ended at a midpoint and lacked any real climax.) That might sell more books, but it is a great way to loose this reader. I cannot recommend (unless it’s free and you like to edit as you read).

Book one and I’m hooked! An amazing supernatural read about the Atura (vampires to us mere mortals!) and their way of living. We meet Brooklyn who is totally a bad ass who not only kicks ass and takes numbers but also has a side most do not see! The syndicate who rule their world or the black hand as they are called behind their backs are pure evil, there are shifters, witches and let’s not leave out the humans! There’s twists and turns galore and there were times I ranted and raved and a couple of times there were tears shed and others that had me laughing. Plenty of action, plenty of cunning and a little bit of steam and after that ending I’m heading off to dive into book two!

Ever heard of the Mafia? Sure you have... but Vampire Mafia? Can't say I have so it was a welcome surprise to read about a different form of Mafia. Although, if I were completely honest, I'd be way more frightened of of the fanged variety Mafia to the "traditional" Mafia.

Brooklyn works for said Mafia, as an assassin, an assassin who hates killing? Yep! That would be Brooklyn! Wanna know what else is bizarre about Brooklyn? She's a Vamp who would rather "starve" than take a "meal" when hungry. Oh and one other eensie weensie thing, she cares about humans, she even has a human friend, Alice. Unheard of! Apparently sacrilege! She's everything I love in a character and her snarky mouth, oh boy is that mouth something else! When a shifter, Dominic, saves her from inevitable death from the Syndicate, they're stuck together and one snarky remark after another had me laughing out loud! Like when she asks him "what's wrong with you, hacking up a hairball?" Then there's a fight, in front of human Alice, when one of the Council attempts to kill Brooklyn, where revelations are revealed BUT when Alice learns who and what Brooklyn is, an even bigger revelation springs forth! OMG! I was physically trying to push my jaw closed! Well Alice sure did a number on me! From the very frightened human she appeared to be, she has amazing backbone and the is sweetest ever!

I so enjoyed the dialogue and the plot, with all the mystery, the why and what Brooklyn, Dominic and Alice are going to do about it! A nicely paced read, with lots of action and the most entertaining humour. I definitely recommend it.

Anyone who knows me knows I love Maya Daniels books. She is one of my one click authors. This is the 1st. book in a new series. And it was amazing! It's a little different than her other books. I liked that it slowed down a little and that gave me time to get to know each character. This is about Brooklyn, Dominic, Alice and the Syndicate. Alice is funny a little crazy and full of snark, she is human even though she says she is a witch. Brooklyn I think is alot more than we think. She was born into the Syndicate and her life's mission is to take it down. She is nothing like the other members who are after power and will kill to get it. Her powers alone prove this. Dominic is one sexy, steaming hot panther shifter, and there is more to him also. Dominic and Brooklyn steam up the pages, their hate of each other along with not trusting each other just makes things between them steamier!! Is it possible to destroy the Syndicate? Can these 3 do it and make it out alive? I don't know, but I guarantee I'll grab the next book without a thought!!! Because I can't wait to see what happens next. I recommend you grab this book right away!! I do not doubt you will love it as I did!!!!

This is my first Maya Daniels novel and I have to say it was incredible. If the writers of Underworld was to blend their story with Charlaine Harris' True Blood with maybe a touch from the Midnight Texas series, then Black Hand would be the result. I was hooked by the very first line and I never lost that feeling of anticipation with the slightest edge of fear that was invoked when I read it. This is a very fast paced book with plenty of action and angst as well as drama that is necessary with a foundation book for a series.
The characters will inspire you to keep reading because if you are like me, you won't be able to keep from falling in love with Dominic and Brooklyn and will find yourself laughing with them at more than a few of Alice's comments and actions. I won't give spoilers but I have to say that the bad guys earn their titles and I can't wait for the next book to see where this goes.
For those of you that read my reviews for the heat and friendliness of a book, I will say this one is a very slow burn and the language is almost non existent and I would say this is definitely family friendly for the simple fact you will hear much worse in the local grocer and on any local channel of tv. I definitely envision this as one of my collectible series.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring down a lot)

How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see 3* differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

Will you be reading more?: Yes

Would you recommend?: Yes

As are the rest of Maya Daniels' books, this book was just as fabulous. Full of suspense, mystery, strong female leads, fascinating supporting characters, and original storylines. This is the first book and I can't wait for the second book, but the bigger question is when will one of these fabulous books make it to the screeen? They are just that good.

It started off where I couldn't really pay attention, but a few pages in the shifter came into view, and I couldn't put it down. It's a really good book. It's a very interesting take on vampires. And I love "the human". I recommend it. I can't wait to read the next one to find out what happens.

DNF 30%
I may go back and try this one again one day but for now it's a big meh.

The main character is super snarky and annoying. The write up tells us that she abhors violance but she's actually a violent person that's constantly envisioning hurting this person or that person.

She's in one of those frustrating rock and a hard place positions, which adds a lot of jaw clenching for me.

I'm not even sure how 30% of the book passed in just like an hour of reading, and nothing much has really happened.
I'm not saying this is a no for me, but it's definately a 'not right now'.

This right here is why Maya Daniels is a one click author. Black Hand is the first book in a new series and it was fantastic! It’s fast paced with enough action and humor to keep things entertaining. Alice might be my favorite; her snark and attitude brings great comic relief. I’m really enjoying this so far and I can’t wait to see where this story takes us

This was good! The beginning was a little slow for me (idk why, I just had trouble getting into it), but once the MMC was introduced, it held my attention pretty well.

Character-wise, I loved loved loveddd Alice. She's hilarious and definitely crazy. The FMC was okay... her insta-lust over the man got on my nerves. She could not pass up a single opportunity to rant about how hot he was. Like. I get it... you don't need to keep saying it every time you look at him. I did like how she wasn't afraid to show emotions, and how she's pretty badass in a fight. I loved all the little rescue/wound tending moments ofc. The man is also fine. He's kind of annoying with his whole shifter superiority complex but whatever. Trope-wise, they definitely hit enemies to lovers, but it was totally one sided (as in, he hated her, she didn't hate him or blame him for hating her).

The plot was a bit slow. Not much happened really. It was mostly just setting up for the rest of the series. The world building was good, though I don'tttt love that the author named their big evil organization "The Black Hand" like... the whole black = evil connotation is prettyyyy rooted in racism so ik that probably wasn't the intention but I just couldn't help but feel like naming the book (and the villain group) like this perpetuates some harmful associations. There were also like no POC in this book so uh... yeahhhh...

I did feel like there were a few inconsistencies with how things were described. For starters, the author wrote that "Atua didn't have to breath to survive" (Atua are basically vampires), but then literally 5 pages later, our girl (an Atua) is getting choked out until "dark spots started dancing at the edge of her vision." And then she was choking for breath when he let go. Even though we just clarified that she doesn't NEED to breath??? Ik that not breathing makes her sluggish but like... sluggish and seeing spots are notttt the same thing. And then at one point, the FMC was like anxious or something and she was describing the feeling as having "her heart bating on the roof of my mouth." Huh???? Is that normal?? Don't get me wrong like I've felt heart palpitations in a lot of weird places, but the roof of her mouth????? Idk. (Also, this is a super niche reference, but all I could think of every time I saw "Atua" was Angie from Daganronpa 3 so that kind of took me out of this lol.)

In terms of the romance, this was definitely slow burn, which was nice. Again, I wish she wasn't so horny. That's my main complaint. Otherwise, the pacing has been good. I kind of felt like both of their trauma dumping happened kind of randomly, but ik it was just being used to like demonstrate the progression of them learning to trust each other. It just felt abrupt to me. My problem is that I'm kind of indifferent to them being together. Like. I'm not NOT rooting for them, but I'm also not actively rooting for them. I don't think they have any chemistry at all. I mean. They never really talk or have normal conversations. There's occasional flirting that's kind of fun, but for the most part, they just have these intense sexual tension moments where they get really close to each other and hold dramatic eye contact.

Yeah at the end of the day, I enjoyed this. It's a decent slow burn urban fantasy/paranormal romance book. The FMC's magic seems pretty cool, and there's definitely a lot of potential. I just don't love any of the characters besides Alice, so I had some trouble caring about the main plot. And I don't feel like the FMC and MMC have chemistry in any way besides physical.

Brooklyn is an Atura, or vampire to the humans. She belongs to The Syndicate, which others call The Black Hand. Those who lead it are vicious savages and monsters that have ruled for so long they are of one mindset. Brooklyn is different from all of them; hair color, attitude, and abilities. She is supposed to assassinate those who prove to be stronger than those who lead. The joke is on them because she has huge plans for those, she “kills” and the bosses. She has a human friend, a vamp BFF as well and will soon have more than she bargained for! When The Syndicate falls prey to an attack, she will do something that will cost her, in the end, ~ When she is kidnapped, she will start making plans and running! She will eventually discover why they are keeping her alive and close at all costs! Maya Daniels is a best-selling author who writes a little different for this series! Her imagination and ability to imagine plots and characters are taking us into a new world on a spectacularly magical journey! You will want to get your hands on this newest series and Brooklyn will become one of your favorite newest heroines! I received this as an ARC and am leaving a voluntary review.

A book that started getting good in the last 2 chapters, this is a book that was allowed to drag out in an attempt to make the first book of the series longer than it had to be.

With the main characters being Dominic (a shifter) and Brooklyn (an Atua — what we would begin to think of a vampire, the most interesting character ended up being Alice (a would be Witch). I feel like the premise of the book was good, but my biggest complaint would be how to elongate the book the writer chose to have Brooklyn dissect how she was becoming physically attracted to Dominic as other events are happening. I felt it took away from the events occurring to pull you out of the main plot to fill a relationship she is building in her own mind.

Had the last 2 chapters not been handled the way they were to pick up the story, this book would have gotten a 2.75 - 3.0 rating. The biggest question for me now becomes, do I invest more time in the series to potentially be slapped with more useless filler, or do I cut my losses and allow my own theories of the story play out in my own mind? I guess time will tell.

Black Hand
3.5 Stars

This was a fun, fast-paced urban fantasy. It held my attention throughout. I loved the world building, interesting characters, and the cool universe.

That said, I almost DNF in the first chapter. Due to the author's repeated misspelling of the name Isaiah, it drove me crazy, as it's my son's name and this is a predominant character throughout. I'm disappointed it wasn't corrected in books 1-3.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend this series (until it's complete or ever). I don't like supporting authors that use big-hooks or cliffhangers to draw an audience. It makes me livid and ruins the reading experience for me. This book stood its ground without these cheap tactics. This first book, Black Hand, is a solid read, but the writing declines in book 2, and book 3 is a waste of time. (Think about the movie Matrix with Keanu Reeves. I wish I had stopped with book 1, and am not interested in book 4)

After reading through the spelling errors, missing words, and ridiculous fight scenes...I couldn't bring myself to continue reading this. It is marketed well and has cool cover art.

The vampire world is derivative (but not as good as Jane Yellowrock, Mercy Thompson, Twilight, etc.). The female protagonist is a pale attempt to copy the same strong, female protagonists (Kate Daniels, Mercy Thompson, Jane Yellowrock, etc.). The dialogue is inane. The details and descriptions of the characters makes no sense with their actions, dialogue, or reactions. If she's "hundreds of years old" but acts like a ditzy 20 year old, that's either on purpose or out of lack of creativity - either way - it makes for incongruous reading. Dumb. This book is dumb.
I can't in good conscience recommend this to even the most ardent urban-female-vampire-action fans. I just can't.

I applaud the author for writing an entire book. That's worth two stars.

Shifters, Witches, Vamps & Ituri…

This is the first book in this series & I must say that I quite enjoyed the story. Brooklyn is Ituri (Polynesian god/goddess). She is being compelled by the Syndicate AKA The Black Hand (any fans of The Blacklist?) which is an ancient order of vamps that loves control, money, power & to subjugate those with power for their own nefarious purposes. Who knew huh? She meets Dominic, a black panther shifter that’s had his entire family murdered by the Syndicate & he is out for revenge. Brooklyn meets Alice, a human that cares for animals but is also a witch unbeknownst to Brooklyn or Dominic. She’s on a quest of her own to take down the Black Hand, damn the torpedos. Sounds like a powerful triumvirate huh? I’m on to the 2nd book. I’ll let you know. Highly recommend.
