Another winner for the Trifecta!

I love this series and this third entry didn't disappoint. The author blends true science and vivid descriptions into a fantasy story of coexistence that will entertain young and old alike.

In this fantasy world, all the denizens of both sky and sea struggle with the dangers of the natural world as well as 'their own' natures as they find ways to coexist with both after a world shattering natural disaster.

Scree, the main heroine of the previous two books, is an octopus who manages to be the one who brings all the different species of 'this' world together through her knowledge and compassion. In this third offering, the ice dragon, Drakor is trying to save his clan from the destruction of their volcanic home as well as the political maneuvering of the former clan leader.

Ice dragons are a 'warrior' race, and Drakor must also convince his people to make an alliance with both the golden dragons and the octopi, (the author has a note to explain why octopi is used instead of the 'proper' octopuses), to survive the coming volcanic winter.

The story shows how different types/kinds of people can use what they each do best to work together to all survive in difficult circumstances, instead of using their various superior attributes to dominate, something today's society could learn from.

I'd give this a definite six stars if I could, but am restricted by Zon's rules to only giving it a 'high five'. 😉

First off I have to say what a joy it is to read a well edited book. Unfortunately I have seen too few published works that were as clean. Now on to the review. My granddaughters and I have been on this journey with this happy (well mostly happy) group from the first book and have loved each book. This time we got so lost in the story that we constantly read past our designated hour to see what happened next. The story is in the details as they run from one danger and right into another one. With the clan being split between Drakor and following the old leader Mardor, Drakor has a lot of work ahead. Drakor works hard to keep his clan happy and invested in their new home and he has the scars to prove it. It's an amazing story with plenty of action and dazzling descriptions that make you feel like you are smack dab in the middle of the story. We all loved it and yes as the story continue and we will stay around for more.

Kudos to Ms Burke for pulling another amazing volume out of the bag. Others have commented on the plot - I'd love to draw your attention to the beautifully crafted writing with its wholly realised, authentic scientific detail smuggled in to surprise and delight the reader. All the unique oceanography that marks this series as unique is present, but so are strong characters, plenty of adversity to overcome, and a plot that never gets bogged down.

I've been a fan of this series from the beginning - I could not wait to dive into this third volume. Absolute quality. A hidden gem that is well worth the read, for both kids and adults alike. One of those books you will finish with a sigh and say to yourself, "Now THAT was a good read!"

Exciting adventure for all ages
Dragon Thunder, by J. S. Burke continues the story of Drakor, Arak, and Scree. This book tells Drakor's challenge as the new leader of the Ice Dragons. After defeating Mardor, and moving the clan to a new home because their volcanic island was about to explode, Drakor faces discontent from the older dragons who question his leadership. Readers will be happy to welcome Scree, (and if you haven't read The Dragon Dreamer or Dragon Lightning, you should) and Arak to help their friend through difficult times. And like me, I think you'll be waiting for the J. S. Burke's next story. A wonderful tale and ... dragons.

In the third book of the Dragon Dreamer series, the new leader, Drakor leads the ice dragons to safety after volcanoes destroy the dragons' island home. Violent electric storms, hunting dwires and a long bleak winter confront the dragons as they struggle to find food and shelter while Drakor must deal with Mardor’s constant and menacing threat. At the same time, tsunamis and seaquakes hit Scree and the other octopi as they seek to establish a new home free of the threat of the giant squid. The story crisscrosses between the dragon and octopus worlds until they collide in a thrilling climax.

The author creates stunningly beautiful landscapes on land and under water, and characters you feel and care for. The dragons and octopi have advanced rituals, medicine, games and art that deepen their appeal as characters. The imaginative and artistic descriptions are a highlight of the book.

The story tackles modern and relevant themes about coping with change in interconnected ecosystems. The author’s knowledge of marine biology is evident and she skilfully blends it with fantasy, so you can’t tell where it begins or ends. The underlying message of the need for cooperation and empathy shines through and leaves you uplifted. While this story is a complete standalone, a few questions remain to carry the series forward to another book. I’m looking forward to discovering what happens next.

Fantastic

I have been in a weird reading slump since the pandemic happened. I could not quite shake the doom and gloom of the world. I decided it was time to shake it off and visit some old friends. This book was exactly what I needed. I needed to dive deep down and see my old healer friends Scree and Orm. I needed to see how Arak was fairing and I needed Drakor. The author has a way of making everything fit perfectly together. You would never think that a clever octopus would have lasting and true friendships with dragons. It is unique. I love the research that goes into each story and how vivid it is to imagine. This book was perfect. The character development is phenomenal. Each one has grown, matured and taken huge risks to become comfortable with who they are. It is refreshing. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a great story with fantastic characters.

Change can start with just one dragon.

It’s time for this truly fascinating trilogy to come to an end! In this third and last book, Drakor, the legendary ice dragon from the second book, having led his clan to safety from their previous island home, now has a whole new series of trials and tribulations to overcome in a brand new world of danger and eternal winter. While this certainly isn’t my favorite book in the series, with two parts of the story never really being resolved, it’s still a fun romp just like the other two.

This trilogy was definitely not what I expected, but I couldn’t be happier that I gave it a shot. My only regret is that I didn’t start it sooner. That, and there won’t be anymore adventures with Scree and Arak. I’ll miss those eight-armed hugs. This book did seem to be left open for another book, so who knows? Maybe someday we’ll get to return to the land of dragons and sea creatures once again. For now, I can safely say this is a book series kids and adults alike would enjoy. Except anyone over the age of 99. Apparently the age limit is 9-99, soooo… Sorry Grandma.

An amazing novel.

Book #3 of the Dragon Dreamer series. The story flows from book to book, however, each book can be read as a stand alone... The world building is terrific. The writing is brilliant and the cast of characters are unforgettable. We follow the octopi and other sea creatures along with fabulous dragons in this adventure full of deep friendships, healing, dangerous situations, insecurities and bravery. An extraordinary imaginative and captivating story full of "heart"! . . I loved the character description in the beginning of the book.

Book 69 of my Goodreads Challenge 2020

Science of the land and sea, intricately entwined with fantasy.

‘Dragon Thunder’ Book 3 of the Dragon Dreamer is just as much of a page-turner as the first two books in this wonderful science fantasy series. It is sometimes difficult to know where reality ends and fantasy begins.

The descriptions of the New World are stunning, and the images conjured by the words were so clear I could see the worlds within my mind’s eye. After the devastating eruptions of the volcanoes one the home of the Ice Dragons and the other close to the home of Scree and the Octopi, both the lands and seas have changed.

Even though the creatures have moved to new homes the eruptions are having far reaching effects and many could still be in danger. Check this book out to see how everyone copes. These books are able to be read as standalone books but it is much better to have read the previous ones to get the real feel for the story.

The thoughts and actions of Drakor and Scree say it all.
‘Drakor’s wings drooped as he stared at the forest of destruction. “No mulberries or black cherries, and Arak said those are the best. Our harvest was stolen by the storm. Weather isss more dangerous than Mardor.”

Scree
‘Suddenly, the ocean shuddered. Waves tore through the water, tumbling rocks and ancient coral. Scree was grabbed by the sea, twisted and wrenched, battered and bruised. This was a death wave. Where did it come from?’

Very highly recommended.

After the events of Dragon Lightning, Drakor is left trying to lead his people as they adjust to their new circumstances. But, as always, the challenges from without are not nearly as insidious as the challenges from within. Will Drakor find the strength and wisdom to not only lead his people where they need to go, but also to convince them to follow him? You'll have to read to find out!

Once again, I loved, loved, loved this story! This is a book that sucks you into its pages from the beginning and doesn't release you until you've read through to the very last word. Ms. Burke has again crafted a tale that tackles such important and timely issues as the struggle between generational perspectives, the need to be considerate of differing viewpoints, the challenges that come from having to extend resources to support additional people, and the moral imperative that makes the lending such support to those in need a necessity. The interactions between the characters are so well-developed, the reader is able to find parallels in the real world throughout.

Again, there is no age limit for this series' fanbase. The whimsical fantasy elements, vivid descriptions, and sprinkling of scientific facts are enough to entertain and fascinate any age group, and the lessons Ms. Burke's characters learn are lessons our society would greatly benefit from all of us, of any age, learning. This one also earns five stars, and I'd give it more if I could.

Dragon Thunder continues the adventures of Drakor, a young ice dragon. The explosion of the super volcano changes their world in ways that endanger everyone. As winter rages on, how can one small, upstart dragon lead an angry group of malcontents?

I enjoyed listening to these characters and telling their story.

The fascinating story of inter-species cooperation continues. The world-building is outstanding, and so are the characters. Despite the very human-like foibles of many, there are a few who rise above petty quarrels to solve problems with logic tempered by compassion. We could use a few such diplomats in our world.

The illustrations are an added treat.

Book three in the series brings back old friends from the first two books. Arak, the golden dragon, Drakor, the ice dragon, and others. This time the author adds more danger for those who live in the world of dragons and sea creatures who are trying to survive in a different winter world. The author writes a great tale that can be read alone or better yet, grab all in the series.

Jenny Burke writes engaging stories that will keep young and not-so-young readers thoroughly entertained. Her characters are three-dimensional, the settings diverse and well-described and she mixes action sequences with character and plot development with finesse.

One knows immediately if they’re reading the work of a veteran writer. Ms Burke certainly qualifies. Dragon Thunder, book three of her Dragon Dreamer series, is just good, polished storytelling. And I can’t think of a better compliment to offer a creative writer.

The story / What I liked:

For this review, I’ll avoid offering a detailed synopsis and simply describe what I liked. Drakor is forced into a leadership role – one he may or may not be suited for. I liked this for many reasons – mainly because it’s real. She gave him a challenge, strengths and weaknesses, and left us desirous of finding out how he’d perform. She set the objective and planted the obstacles. And from there grew the conflict that all stories must have.

I also liked the dual story lines: Drakor and the Ice Dragons and Scree the octopus in her undersea domain. The friendship between the two with their mind-travel connection is delightful.

Additional thoughts:

Ms Burke is a professional writer. And this goes beyond story or character. She’s learned the craft and displays her talents in ways many will miss. Dialogue tags: He said, she said etc. She’s found the many ways to avoid them. They’re clunky and quickly give you away as a novice in the literary world. Paragraphing, chapter length, vocabulary… I could go on. It’s just clean, smart and easy to read.

And I just love how she almost surgically slips in bits of pure science – mainly Biology and Geology. Why not teach a little while you’re entertaining young minds?

Criticisms:

I have none. This was a delightful read.
Summary and recommendation:

Dragon Thunder, by J. S. Burke, is a sparkling story filled with meaningful themes and interesting characters. The writing is crisp, the goals are clear, and there is ample conflict to make the story engaging.

I give Dragon Thunder by J. S. Burke 5-stars and my highest recommendation for readers from eight to adult.

I read the first two books of the Dragon Dreamer series (The Dragon Dreamer and Dragon Lightning) and enjoyed both! When J.S. Burke released Dragon Thunder, I added it to my TBR list. It’s up now for review and here are my thoughts!

Synopsis (from the author):
Drakor foresees the doom of dragons, but Mardor refuses to listen. No one thinks the youngster will challenge this huge, powerful ruler!
Now Drakor is the unexpected leader in a new world, where deadly problems grow faster than the unnatural storms. And as hard as it was to win that terrible fight, leading is harder. As Mardor incites a rebellious clan, Drakor questions everything. How can the clan survive if they can't work together? And can he survive another brutal fight with that giant?

As the world plunges into winter, Arak and Scree offer their help. But Drakor's seafaring friends face their own threats. Only one thing is clear: Everyone is in danger.

What I liked:
I enjoyed the trip back to the worlds of dragons and octopuses! This one doesn’t involve Scree and Arak as much, but they play important roles. This book delves into the leadership growth of Drakor and the Ice Dragons. With lots of action in a new world, dangers that lurk around each corner, and challenges growing daily, Drakor’s trials make for good reading! If you enjoy a bit of dragon fantasy, read Dragon Thunder!

What I didn’t like:
My only complaint was Mardor’s repeated insubordinate actions. One or two would have sufficed, but I thought more than that was unnecessary and distracted from the story.

Overall impression:
As with the rest of the series, Dragon Thunder entertained me! I enjoyed getting to know Drakor more and liked the way he solved problems. If you like dragons, conflict, and a good story, read this one!

My rating:
5 Stars

Epic next instalment in the Dragon Dreamer series!

The Dragon clans and Octopus pods are moving and evolving in response to each other and natural disasters.

The characters grow and evolve as well. Jenny has written people that interact and grow as the story progresses, and that is a wonderful thing!

Mysteries and challenges are met and solved progressively through the story arc with scope to continue.

Well done!

The third book in the dragon dreamer series. It can be read as a standalone, but I recommend the whole series. It is fun to see the evolution of the characters through the series. This one starts off with a new home. It was great to meet up with Scree and Orm as they work on solving problems while looking back on the old stories and legends. Scree is the octopus heroine who helps us visualize the underwater world. Drakor is the dragon that takes us through the ice dragon world. Both worlds are fascinating. I love the friendships that endure and emerge through these two fantastically detailed worlds.

The author is an amazing world builder, but i think her real talent lies in character development. The characters are flawed and fabulous. The friendships are the heart of the story. I highly recommend this book for someone looking for a fantasy book with heart. It is a book that can be appreciated by both children and adults. Stop reading this review and pick up this book now.

Another wonderful story in a rich world created by Ms. Burke!

I love the realism of the dragons and the octopi in the story. How they work together, how they work to live in unison, and help each other as the world around them changes. Exploring and tackling challenges as they present themselves. It's a dangerous new world for the Ice Dragons, with tensions running high after their forced exodus from their island home. But with the help of the Gold dragons and the octopi they just may have a chance to survive and thrive... Or will the enemies in their new home, and dissent within the clan spell their demise before they have a chance to really try?

I love the characters and how alive they come on the page!

Best Dragons since McCaffrey.

First the stars, 4 not 5. This is because Burke is to clever by a half. When I read this I felt I was getting two books in one. He is so descriptive that many scenes went on long after the interest in them was gone.

Burke brought two world's together like I could have never imagined. Animals in the sea and animals of earth and sky. He made them friends, wow. To pull that off is masterful writing.

This is a wonderful read.

The ice dragons have moved and face new challenges, having lost their ancestral home. Fierce unseen predators, the prospect of a long winter caused by the volcano explosion, lack of food... these are little dangers compared to dissent.
Meanwhile, the golden dragons and octopii face their own challenges to survive the brutal changes of their world.
This seems not to be the last of the series, as two important subjects are still hanging at the end of the book.

Unforgettable Fantasy Blended With The Science of Oceanography
This third book in the series is no less extraordinary than the other two. Ms. Burke, a marine biologist, has written another exciting and flawless adventure blending unforgettable fantasy with the science of oceanography. Her characters are endearing and familiar. The book continues the heartwarming story of how the characters carry on and learn to cope with new surroundings after a major catastrophe befalls both Scree’s ocean world and Drakor’s ice world. It’s amazing to see the parallel between fiction and real life presented here, producing many well-learned lessons.
This is an enjoyable read for both children and adults. Although the book can be a standalone, I suggest reading both Dragon Dreamer and Dragon Lightning just for the sheer fun of it!

This book may be read as a solo sci-fi, fantasy adventure. I have been fortunate to read the first two books in this series and can fully appreciate the development and depth of the characters in Book Three.

The ice dragons fled their homeland due to a volcanic eruption. The golden dragons and creatures of the sea have all been forced to relocate. Drakor, leader of the ice dragons, is young and inexperienced. He is wary of Mardor who has already challenged him and lost. Now Drakor must gain the trust of the dragon colony who are wary of their leader.

There are two parallel stories. Readers follow Scree and Orm, the octopi who hunt the seas and ally themselves with the dragons. Arak leads the golden dragons who will need to decide whether to fight or trade with the ice dragons in the New World. There will be food shortages and new enemies like the Dwire, who become new threats to survival.

This book is a fascinating and intriguing combination of science fiction, fantasy, adventure, biology, environmental science and societal mores. Readers will experience many scenarios, war, peace, empathy, division, healing, and generational struggles.

A highly engaging read for middle-grade, young adult and adult readers.

I'm a fan or both Dragon Dreamer and Dragon Lightning and I am so happy to have the third, Dragon Thunder. I loved returning to her original unique beautiful world. All three books are stand alone and can be read in any order. They have some of the most interesting characters and she does a wonderful job with their friendship In this book, Drakor the original Dragon dreamer has a mate who is also a healer like his octupus friend, the loveable Scree. She is very well developed and a great match for Drakor in mind and spirit. Drakor now has to grow as he faces new obstacles including Mardor, another dragon who wants to take over as leader.
Drakor has to show that he will be a great leader but still remain a dreamer and explorer! Ms. Burke has created another fantastic adventure.

Dragon Thunder raises the stakes with a gripping tale of leadership, rebellion, and survival. Drakor’s unexpected role as leader is both inspiring and heartbreaking, showing the challenges of courage and responsibility. The story balances thrilling action with emotional depth, as storms, giants, and rival clans threaten everyone’s future. J.S. Burke’s worldbuilding continues to shine, blending undersea wonder with dragon lore in a way that feels fresh and exciting. The friendships and teamwork at the heart of the series remain powerful and uplifting. A compelling continuation that fans of the first two books will find both satisfying and unforgettable.

Dragon Thunder is another wonderful book by JS Burke! The writing is absolutely beautiful and I enjoyed the well-researched science intertwined throughout. Character development was excellent- I found myself caring about what happened to Drakor and Scree and all of the other characters in this novel. The plot was exciting and fast paced and I literally could not put it down! This was an excellent read!
