Somewhere between 2.5 and 3 stars It was better than 2.5, so I gave a weak 3 stars.

I liked this book, until the ending. The final few pages drove me crazy. I haven't been so disappointed like this for a long time. It feels like when you lose your e-arc's last pages. The author cut the whole story in half. Why? This type of ending is so bad. It just destroyed my whole enjoyment. Ok, I let it go. I'm just so sad.

The story is about Claire who 10 years ago survived a horrific murder where her husband was killed. The murderer is called Black-out killer because he cuts off the power before he actually starts his act. Nowadays, Claire has post-traumatic stress. She is frightened when she has to leave her house. She has a lot of flashbacks from that night. Claire is just a wreck. Her personality was so true. If somebody has survived such a terrible event, that somebody would have similar behavior. Just think about it.
The story has some unnecessary characters, who did nothing. At some point Claire and her mom have returned to Ireland, where the catastrophe happened. If I was scared like Claire, I'm sure I wouldn't go back there. It is so ridiculous.
The pacing is very slow, it takes too long to build up. I noticed that I was bored sometimes.
The author didn't give too much explanation, I have a lot of questions, and I don't know the answers. It makes me confused, and I really hate that feeling.
Overall, it was OK, but I had a lot of issues. If you are looking for a slow type of thriller, and you like the unfinished ending, I recommend it. If you have similar taste to mine, just skip it because you will be angry like I was.

It’s been 10 long years since Claire Moore’s terrifying encounter with the serial killer, dubbed by the media as ‘The Black-Out Killer’. Having lost her husband in the attack, Claire has struggled to rebuild her life. Finally. She decides to return back to her home….but she is unaware that the killer is still waiting for her and soon the killings start all over again. The Black-Out Killer is back. And he’s coming for Claire…And he is Closer Than You Think.

Just the prologue describing the Blackout Killer and peek into his sinister mind is enough to create a lot of intrigue and making you think that you are in for a thrilling ride.

Once you are through the first few chapters of the book, that’s when it starts to get disappointing. Most of the book from Claire’s point of view is slow moving and without any major twists. The killer has his separate track but these tracks move so separately, their paths don’t even cross till the very end. There are multiple sequences of Claire feeling stalked and killer planning his next kill which soon feels repetitive. The story does have a few twists and turns along the way which keeps you interested in the story.

The story between the Blackout Killer and Claire lacked any substance. With far too sequences of Claire feeling threatened by random strangers, there are no real tense moments and the confrontation between the two takes forever to happen. The killer seems more focused on other targets (with an unexplained obsession with Jack the Ripper). The story finally gathers momentum towards the end which is when it gets exciting. The ending seemed hurried (wrapped up in a single chapter) and the final twist in the Epilogue seemed confusing. I am all for surprising twists in the end but when you try to add it all up, it didn’t make a lot of sense. The author too didn't give too many explanations in the end in terms of tying up the loose ends.

I felt the story had immense potential and could have been a great thriller. I loved how Claire’s storyline shaped up; from a traumatized victim to a strong survivor, who finally decides to take control of her life. I also liked the story of the killer, though it felt too fragmented. The story does take too long to build up and the ending lacked a punch. Overall, it was a good story and if you like thrillers with a slow burn, you may enjoy this one.

Many thanks to NetGalley, publishers HQ Digital and the author Darren O’Sullivan for the ARC

Ever since surviving The Black-Out Killer, Claire Moore has struggled with her new life. Fortunately, her family has served as her safety net— and her support group has certainly helped. She’s even slowly started a relationship with a new man. However, ten years on, her world comes crashing down when there’s another power cut and another victim. Whether it’s the killer or a copycat, Claire’s sure of only one thing … he’s coming for her.

The true success of this book stems from the crafting of Claire Moore. Author Darren O’Sullivan has written a deeply complicated character attempting to navigate the difficult reality that is surviving severe trauma at the hands of a serial killer. Her evolution over the course of the novel is painfully believable, and O’Sullivan expertly explores these sections with tact. The entire book hinges on believing her reality, and O’Sullivan has more than accomplished that.

Because of this, there is a lot of introspection. Scene after scene does not shift by with a bang. Instead, O’Sullivan chooses to let readers understand what’s really going on in Claire’s head at all times. It’s both quiet and effective. Whether she’s mentally preparing herself for a simple walk to the store or tending to her former husband’s grave, readers are given deep insight into a woman healing. O’Sullivan finds the extraordinary in the ordinary, and this story is better for it.

All of this is not to suggest there isn’t action. This is a thriller, after all, and some moments are truly pulse-pounding. O’Sullivan deftly writes from the perspective of The Black-Out Killer. These sections are unnerving especially when juxtaposed against Claire’s own narrative. Dark, unsettling, and occasionally gory, though never gratuitous, these moments are some of the best in the book.

A thriller can usually be measured in how everything is tied up at the end. In that case, thrillers don’t get any better than Closer Than You Think. The final sections are shocking, making this the true definition of a page-turner.

Note: I received a free ARC of this book through NetGalley.

CLOSER THAN YOU THINK is the third psychological serial killer by Darren O’Sullivan, the author of psychological thrillers “Our Little Secret” and “Close Your Eyes”.

I was hooked on this novel right from the beginning.
“He would always be someone who killed. And it wouldn’t be long before he would kill again…He knew he had to wait, be patient, and watch.”

Ten years ago, Claire Moore had survived a serial killer’s attempted murder. The killer, known as “The Black Out Killer” killed her husband before setting his body and her house on fire. Tommy Kay, a drug dealer, and widely believed to be the serial killer in Ireland, was accused and convicted of these crimes had been sent to prison, where he later died. But was he responsible for this crime plus six previous murders?

Claire Moore has struggled to rebuild her life, but the trauma has drastically changed her life forever. Now ten years later, Claire remains devastated by her brush with death, even though she has a loving and supportive family around her.

Claire senses she is been stalked, and she is on full alert!

Then there is a power cut; a house fire; another victim found killed in the same way as before.
The Black-Out Killer is back. And he’s coming for Claire…'

My heart went out to Claire for her strength and bravery to face her past head on.

I enjoyed this novel, but felt the ending was a little rushed (all in a single chapter) and the final twist seemed confusing. and unfinished with a lot of loose ends.

Many thanks to the author, HQ Digital, Netgalley and the TBC Reviewer Request Group (FB) for my digital copy.

An interesting tale yet devastating for the main star of the story Claire who is a survivor of an evil serial killer....this charming fella hunts his victims, causes a power cut then burns them alive, he starts with just men then goes on to include their partners....Claire saw her husband Owen dead in the bath and managed to escape, but she is scared and scarred, mentally and physically...and who wouldn’t be!
The story then follows Claire as she battles with her daily life and fear and how the killer, thought to be dead, re appears and begins to kill again
The book is tense and you feel Claire’s despair in every page, sometimes this felt repetitive as she struggled to have a shower, go outside, meet people etc but it was important to paint the picture of how she was feeling and coping ( or not ) with her life!
As the story progressed and the killer got closer I did guess who it was ( for me one sentence gave it away mid way through) none the less it was still exciting to get to the finale and see I was right!
The ending was abrupt and quick and in total contrast to the rest of the book and I think it worked, ‘this is it, this is the killer’ the end!, it did leave the book ‘open’ imo
I was surprised when writing this that the book was only 277 pages, I was expecting maybe 400-450 as it felt an involved and longer read
All told a good, different take on a serial killer theme, intriguing and menacing, a chilling read
8/10 4 Stars

Closer Than You Think is a book that I had to read with the lights on! When you read it you will understand why. This book is dark, creepy and extremely intense... and I loved it. The story was one that I could not get out of my head and I thought that I had it all worked out.. and It was an OMG moment when I was wrong.. what an ending!! Brilliant writing Mr Sullivan.

Claire Moore was the one that got away. Her husband and 6 others had not been so lucky. She was the survivor of the Black-Out Killer. She lost everything that night and her life hasn't been the same since. It is 10 years later and she still lives in fear, even though he has been locked up. She struggles with day to day things like showering and is unable to work. She is frightened of her own shadow. But then she meets Paul and her life starts to get better and she gets a bit braver. And then the killings start again.. the same way. She takes a massive step back in her recovery and suffers guilt for being alive. The killer is watching Claire... will she ever feel normal again.

This story is original and dark. I was pulled into the lives of these characters and was feeling everything that they were feeling. And as I said, I kept the lights on! It is scary!!

Thanks to HQ Digital and NetGalley for my advanced copy of this book to read. All opinions are my own and are in no way biased

You know those books that instantly grab you from the first paragraph and you want to gush about to all and sundry? Well, this is definitely one of those; it's one of the best psychological thrillers I've read in a while. For anyone who's into the genre, this is an absolute must-read. It's deftly plotted, refreshingly original and very clever; I found it claustrophobic with a building sense of unease which ratchets up as you progress. Main protagonist, Claire, is not that likeable, but she is so well drawn that you feel every single emotion she goes through. A series of strategically placed twists ensure the reader is kept enthralled. This is indeed a page-turner.

O'Sullivan creates such a tense atmosphere that it quickly immerses you and you lose yourself amongst the pages. I was engrossed and simply couldn't stop reading. It's nicely written, dark and extremely creepy - it keeps you on your toes throughout. This is certainly more of a slow-burn than a pacy one but stick with it as it soon becomes unputdownable. It takes a lot to fool me given that I read over 500 thrillers per year, but the author managed to masterfully do exactly that. As well as being told from Claire's perspective we see from the killer's point-of-view - his reasoning and motivation behind who he chooses as his victims. It's a moving, powerful, utterly riveting read with an ending that will astound you.

Many thanks to HQ Digital for an ARC.

Claire Moore is known as the woman who survived an attempted murder by a serial killer. The killer ... known as The Black Out Killer ... did manage to kill her husband before setting his body and her house on fire.

The man accused and convicted died behind bars. But was he guilty of this crime plus 6 others previously?

It has been 10 years since her attack and she remains traumatized .. nightmares, sleeping with lights on .. .afraid to shower unless someone is right outside the door .... she can't even imagine bathing in a tub. She is afraid to leave her house and when she does manage that, she's afraid to enter the house. Her body is scarred on the outside and the inside.

But someone is stalking her .... and he wants her dead.

The power outages have started again .... more victims found slaughtered in the same way as the first victims. A copy cat killer?

This is a suspenseful look at a brave woman, who has come a long way, yet still faces challenges every day. She doesn't want to be a victim anymore. Someone has other ideas.

This was a good read ... but I was left unsatisfied with the ending.. it felt unfinished.

Many thanks to the author / HQ Digital / Netgalley / TBC Reviewer Request Group (FB) for the digital copy of this psychological thriller. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

My Rating: 3.5 Stars

Claire Moore has struggled for years after escaping a brutal serial killer. The murderer was called the Black-Out Killer. But, suddenly, the killings stopped. Not only has she had to suffer the after affects on a private level, she has become loved - and haunted - by the public as well as the press. As the ten-year anniversary of her escape approaches, Claire is determined to take control over her life.

Sadly, her nightmare isn’t over. Not only has it just begun, she does not quite realize it yet. Instead, she finally has hope. She makes wonderful strides.

When a sudden power cut occurs, and another body is found, it appears as if the killer is back, and headed for Claire.

What a tense read! I worried so much about Claire and her feelings and fear. Her trauma, and the loss she experienced was with her every second and it was palpable.

This was a compelling book. The level of danger and creepiness rated off the charts. Although I chose to read it during a bright sunny day due to the context, I still remained very nervous while reading it.

The ending, however, gave me pause. So much so that I barely know how to close this review! Suffice it to say that it shocked me upon belief. I cannot reconcile how the author left things. I simply cannot. If not for the last few chapters, this would be a five-star review. However, things ended in such a way that I will go with a 3.5.

Many thanks to HQ Digital and to NetGalley for this ARC to review in exchange for my honest opinion.

Setting: Cambridgeshire, UK; 2018.
10 years ago in Ireland, Claire Moore survived an attack by the Black-Out Killer during which her husband, Owen, died. Now living near her mother in the UK, Claire has still not come to terms with the attack on her, which has left her scarred both physically and mentally despite the killer being caught and convicted back in Ireland, and subsequently dying in custody.
Day-to-day life is a struggle for Claire - she cannot work, can barely summon up the courage to leave the house and is paranoid about home security. She only gets by with the support of her mum and stepfather - until she meets Paul on a dating app and begins to think that perhaps she can have a life again. Then, in the small community of Bethesda in Wales, a woman is murdered and the M.O. is the same as the Black-Out Killer's - suddenly, all of Claire's nightmares are recalled....
This was a brilliant read - fast-paced and totally gripping with several threads leading the reader to believe they know who the killer is, only for the story to twist yet again. A truly shocking ending, which led to me not quite giving it 5 stars! - 9/10.

I didn’t go in overwhelmed with expectations, there are simply too many suspense thrillers out, and turns out it was just the right approach. Because this was steadily average, but perfectly decent of a read. I actually haven’t read one by the male author in a while, women seem to be dominating the genre presently, but the main character was still a woman. The only survivor of a terribly violent crime, the last one in a crime spree of an Irish serial killer, who since then been (possibly) apprehended. But of course he hasn’t. He’s just been biding his time, waiting to go off again. All the while never too far in thoughts and distance from the one who got away. Literally. In fact, he’s closer than you think. Get it, get it. Ok, then. So it’s a pretty straight forward sort of story, the female protagonist is making strides to get on with her life, but the world has too many real and imaginary dangers and that’s even aside from her questionable taste in men. Otherwise pretty standard…split narrative, check, misleading the reader, check, twist ending, check. I figured it out relatively early on, then got sidelined by a very (too much so) convincing alternative and then the epilogue proved me right. Without that ending, this would have been just too basic, so it’s nice it’s there. Never read the author before, probably would again based on this book, but not something to aggressively look for either. It was a very quick read and it did entertain, so a very serviceable way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Thanks Netgalley.

10-years ago, the Black-Out Killer wreaked havoc on the streets of suburbia Ireland. This serial killer would cut the power to a street, leaving his victims completely in the dark. He had 7 victims and Claire Moore was supposed to be his 8th, but somehow, she survived. Claire is the only victim of the Black-Out Killer that lived and she’s dealt with the consequences for the past decade—paranoia, grief, constant fear. Now that the 10-year anniversary is approaching, Claire is going back to Ireland to visit what’s left of her old home and the grave sight of her husband, Owen, victim number 7.

The police caught the Black-Out Killer years previously and he died while incarcerated. But upon the 10th anniversary of Claire’s tragedy, there’s another murder, in the same style as the Black-Out Killer. Police are scrambling to figure out whether this is the work of a copycat killer or if they put the wrong man in prison all those years ago. This murder has Claire on edge—unable to move on with her life, scared that she is now in danger once again.

But what Claire doesn’t know is the Black-Out Killer is still very much alive, and he’s been watching her, keeping track of her every move. And he has some dark plans—he’s not done with Claire yet.

Closer Than You Think by Darren O”Sullivan is a clever, slow-burn crime thriller. I thought I had the twist all figured out and I’m happy to say I was proven wrong! Although I think the story dragged and was repetitive at parts, the ending made up for it. My heart was pumping and O’Sullivan created the perfect, creepy atmosphere. The story is told through three perspectives: Claire in 2018, the Black-Out Killer in 2008 and letters from the Black-Out Killer to Claire in 2018. These perspectives gave great insight into not only Claire, but the serial killer’s minds. Highly recommend for fans of serial killer/stalker crime novels—4/5 stars.

Thank you to NetGalley, HQ and Darren O’Sullivan for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is an absolutely engrossing book that has you gripped from the first page and with an original plot line it makes for a really excellent read. The black-out killer is back and he is coming for Claire !! So this is a psychological thriller that’s creepy and dark with a very nasty serial killer with plenty of twists, a great ending and written exceptionally well. The characters are believable and real making it a book not to be missed.

I have been completely surprised and blown away by this story, it drew me in right from the very beginning and kept me truly captivated throughout, right to the very shocking outcome as the story concluded.

The author Darren certainly knows how to get inside ones head when bringing his characters to life, he literally has you doubting as to who to trust and who not too. As for the character of Claire I truly did feel for her, I mean all the things that she had to go through and contend with, whilst trying and struggling to rebuild her life.

This has been one very dark twisty intense tale of a story, and I think if I ever experience a power cut anytime soon, I'm going to be remembering this story and will probably go hide in a closet or somethjng.

I was truly captivated and enthralled with this book and throughout reading it, I kept trying to piece everything together in my head, and figure it all out, and wondering how it would all end. Suffice to say I couldn't have been more wrong if I tried.

Oh and do not even get me started on the shocking twist at the end, now that left me grasping in shock for sure. It was one hell of a OMG moment. It has left me somewhat speechless.

So final words, if you haven't discovered this book yet then don't delay any further as you won't regret it. Oh and be sure to read his other two books Our Little Secret and Close Your Eyes as they are absolutely brilliant.

Closer Than You Think is a good mystery thriller with a well written plot. It's actually a bit different from other books with a similar premise, so that's refreshing. Closer Than You Think

I have read and loved the first two books by Darren O’Sullivan so I had high hopes for the third!

This book is a sit on the edge of your seat, if your reading alone and here a noise you jump, page turning gem!

The depth of the characters is flawless and the flow of the book is perfection! Perfectly placed twists and turns and a surprise ending I don’t think anyone will see coming.

Dark, ominous, and downright heart-racing at times, “Closer Than You Think” by Darren O’Sullivan is a straight-forward psychological thriller that increases in intensity as the story progresses. Most of the story centers on the trauma Claire Moore suffered after surviving her would-be murder and death of her husband at the hands of the Black-Out Killer.

Little by little, she shares details of the attack, but what she shares up-front is the damage it did to her both physically and psychologically. Ten years on, she’s struggling to live a normal life. — and making progress. She forces herself to do the most mundane tasks outside of her home, such as going to the store. She visits her late husband’s grave for the first time. And she begins to date a new man.

Since Claire’s perspective is written in first person, you get to feel her anxiety, fear, and apprehension. You might even feel joy and excitement for her when she begins to truly move forward and falls in love again. You might, but you won’t.

Interspersed with Claire’s story is the Black-Out Killer’s. Although it’s written in third person, it creates the ominous and creepy tone of the book. You, the reader, knows he’s out there and coming for her — but Claire does not. Instead, she continues to make strides in moving on with her life. The more strides she makes, the closer he gets.

Psychological thriller novels are always built around the stressed mental state of at least one character. Elements of mystery, suspense, and paranoia are also incorporated to create palpable tension and lead to the twists. They’re not always fast-paced. Or even medium paced. Sometimes they are slower, because they need to be to create a true thriller.

“Closer than You Think” is a slower-paced read. Every important aspect, such as Claire’s mental state, is told in much needed detail. It’s critical that you know her, that you understand her, that you see her getting stronger. It increases the ominous-factor of the book. It ups the creepy vibe. And it makes your heart race and your palms sweat as you start to near the end. The end is where you’ll find the “omg-that didn’t just happen” twist. Even if you see some of it coming (I didn’t), I promise you it will still knock you on your bum.

Wow, ok. Where do I begin ? Was it thrilling ? Yes, sure thing. We have so less stories about serial killer survivors. So, the plot was tense and intriguing. But the constant switching between what happened then and what is currently happening is a tad bit confusing, because the killer reaches Claire's family only in the end. They were supposed to be his last kills. So, we know that Claire survived a serial killer who was out killing couples. Her husband died that day, but she survived. Her will to survive kept her alive that day. And she remembers that day so clearly. The investigation is done, the killer absconding as there were no kills after that. She is suffering through severe PTSD, which in this case is absolutely normal. She still misses her husband and has fond memories of their time together. It's been 10 years and she is slowly rebuilding her life, growing closer to another man. But someone is watching her.. The man who had left things unfinished 10 years ago is in the shadows waiting to complete his job. Someone who wants to remind her of the fear she had felt all those years ago.. And he has already begun his ritual killings of other women.

The story is thrilling in the sense that it gives so many options as to who the killer might actually be. So from the past we know that the killer is choosing couples who seem perfect in front, but are having a tumultuous relationship. The man is abusive and the wife is too weak. And as expected, the killer's childhood was marred by his violent father and weak mother. Things got a little stretchy in the middle, the suspicion moving in all directions. But I will tell you this.. the MO of the kills was truly thrilling. So well-written. Specially the last 4-5 chapters were exceptionally thrilling. You might know the killer, but you don't. The power to the house is cut, which usually happens when the kills take place. The door is slowly opening and Claire is on high alert. She has lived through this before. Claire is ready this time, but is she really ?

The only thing that left me a little disappointed is the whole charade of serial killings when the killer actually wanted to punish only Claire. And also after the identity of the killer was revealed and the reasons behind his actions, left me feeling irked by his hypocrisy. I mean he was targeting the women because they were too weak ? And he himself was an abusive person.. Did not make sense to me. I'd rather have given it a psycho angle, kill all people just to make Claire's kill look a part of serial killing. And not because his childhood made him like this. That said, I did enjoy the story. The title is also very apt considering who the killer actually is !

This is a serial killer thriller set in Ireland, with a two timelines. You follow Claire who survived the black out killer. A killer turning off the power, killing and burning the remains. Claire was supposed to be the 8th victim but she escaped. 10 years later, Claire is trying to move on with her life and come to terms with the trauma caused by that night. However, reports are coming in that the black out killer is back and he's closer than you think

So, serial killer thrillers are one of my faves to read and this was no expection. This book is incredibly pacey and claustrophobic. It has the right amount of gore and guts to gross you out but is not overdone so it becomes silly.

I found myself constantly guessing throughout this book. I was set on it being one of two people. I was thinking this was going to be ruined by the ending has I thought it was going to be super predictable. But bam!! The ending came and I did not guess what happened!

If you like pacey, tense exciting thrillers, I think you will love this one.

This title comes out on May 30th! Get your pre-orders in girls and guys

Thank you for letting me read this arc, netgalley and the publishers!

While atmospheric and engaging in the main, the book falls flat in terms of the twist and the plot itself descending into the ridiculous and using PTSD as a convenient plot device that is not included consistently. It is such a shame that the story becomes almost a parody during the finale and really doesnt deliver on the promise throughout. This is not necessarily a creepy book - it is a fairly standard thriller that has no real new ideas and is a cookie cut-out, complete with a cookie cut-out villain, relying a little too much on the "psychopaths hurt animals and we need to show every bit of detail" element in places. Motivations for a lot of characters are not explored, and in fact the reveal is fairly easy to predict despite being daft. It is also a pet peeve of mine that the ending gives no closure whatsoever, with no real conclusion meaning that I was left completely dissatisfied at the end

So, although I wasn't a fan of the plot and the story - the writing is style is definitely a win for me. I found it engaging and easy to read. I may well try another book by this author but the story just didn't sit right with me.

Claire Moore is a delicate and complicated character whose struggle to come to terms with her brush with death we follow in close detail. Some reviewers comment that this is repetitive but I personally felt it added to the story and helped me understand her character better. The sections written by the Black-Out-Killer sit in stark contrast to Claire’s own introspection and juxtapose really nicely. There’s action, too, plenty of it, especially towards the end where the killer twist hits you like a punch to the face!

This story grabbed me from page one and the spine-tingling, chilling narrative kept me gripped throughout. The ending was a complete surprise and I loved that about this book.

A really good, fast paced crime thriller, which was genuinely frightening at times.
I read it in one day which is always a good sign! :)
Easily worthy of 4 stars.

Claire Moore is the woman who survived an attempted murder by the Blacl Out killer, where her husband was killed. before his body and the house was set on fire. Ten years later she is still living with the aftermath of the attack. the tension that exists around her is almost palpable. She has nightmares, sleeps with lights on .. .and is afraid to shower unless someone is right outside the door. She is afraid to leave her house and when she does manage that, she's afraid to enter the house. Her body is scarred on the outside and the inside.

The power outages have started again .... more victims found slaughtered in the same way as the first victims. Is is a copy cat killer?
Claire is a very complex character and it is good to see her getting stronger. It is a very suspenseful and thrilling read, even if I did guess who the killer is!

Thanks to the author, Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

I will echo the sentiment of previous reviewers who said this is more of a slow burn novel. I tend to like these kinds of reads but I know they aren't for everyone, so just be aware that this isn't a fast paced, clutch your pearls experience.

That said, I enjoyed this. At times I wished the pace would pick up just a little, but it's well-written and I definitely didn't see the ending coming. Others have complained that the ending is too ambiguous, and it's true that everything is not tied up neatly in a bow, so if that's not your thing, maybe skip this one.

I enjoyed this and will likely pick up another book by this author.

Thank you to Netgalley for the advanced copy.

This was the first time I had read a book by Darren and I will read more. I was addicted from the start and was gutted when I had to put it down. The storyline was brilliant and I really was drawn to the characters.
I had a suspicion I had guessed what would happen but Darren delivered an excellent suckerpunch meaning I was far off.
A brilliant book and highly recommend it and the author. Wow, will remain with me for sometime.

I loved this author's previous two books and have been champing at the bit to get my hands on this one ever since I saw the cover reveal. My lack of patience was rewarded as I absolutely loved it, reading it straight through in one sitting only stopping to forage the kitchen for nibbles to keep me going and the odd visit to the you know where! Basically, I could not put it down!
Ten years ago Claire was the only survivor of a serial killer who targeted couples. Barely escaping with her life, her husband not being so lucky, she still holds the scars both physically and mentally. She is trying to rebuild her life and has support from a few people close to her. She's also started dating again although she is taking it very slowly, something that her new partner seems to be coping with. But her recovery is still two steps forward three steps back, even though the perpetrator was caught, jailed and has subsequently died. But did they get the right man? Now ten years later, someone is recreating his crimes with startling accuracy. Could this really be a copycat or did they get the wrong man all those years ago? With Claire being the one that got away, is she now in danger?
This book hit the ground running right from page one and the tension and intrigue didn't let up until the very last word. If I hadn't been so exhausted by the time I finished reading it, I would have stood up and applauded the author for a job well done. Instead, I sat back on my sofa and just said "wow"!
Once I regained my composure I mused on what I had read and mentally kicked myself for being so blind to some of the hindsight moments that I had missed along the way. I read so many of this type of book per year - it's my bread and butter genre and I read north of 250 books annually - that these days it takes a lot to pull the wool over my eyes but I have to admit to being clueless and definitely not prepared for the final shock when it was delivered. Especially given the way things were left at the book's conclusion.
What also impressed me was the description of the way that what happened to Claire has impacted on her life. How she struggled to do the things that the majority of people just take for granted. Leaving the house, popping to the shops, taking a shower. How one day she can achieve quite a lot then, for no apparent reason, the next day just really doesn't happen for her and she struggles with doing the simplest of tasks. I really felt for her so much that sometimes it was a little painful to read about.
I also loved the parts of the book where we hear from the killer. How they choose their victims, their reasoning behind what they do, and then seeing them actually build up to and do the deeds. So chilling and scary. One of the best baddies I've read about for a while.
Pacing was also very good although the beginning was a little slower compared to the roller coaster ending, it served to build up the tension nicely for what followed. Description was enough to set scenes and add flavour to the story without being distracting.
All in all, a cracking book that I thoroughly enjoyed. Only down side is that I now have to wait ages for the next one. My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.

“Closer Than You Think” started off promisingly - I love myself a good murder thriller and from the synopsis I was excited to read it.

Unfortunately the novel is very obviously written by a man: writing a female character without considering the female perspective results in a weak character overall. Our protagonist, Claire Moore, spends the first half of the book (and the ten years preceding the start of the novel) hating herself for being a survivor. However, in a matter of weeks of plot time a switch is flicked and she now sees herself in a different light? Unrealistic and lazy in my opinion.

Overall the entire novel felt rushed. It was full of plot holes and unrealistic plot twists that, while intended to create suspense, had more of a “oh this again?” response. The novel was cliché ridden (if “the heavens had opened” is used more than once to describe rain, you’ve used it too many times…). The dialogue was lacking and poorly constructed - again lazy writing. The ending of the novel was also disappointing, leaving me with absolutely no interest in the events following the end of the plot.

Lazy writing and an inaccurate representation of the female perspective is what made me give this novel only two out of five stars. This being said - if you’re looking for a quick read that could get you out of a reading slump, a book that doesn’t make you think too much or take up any of your headspace when not reading it, this might be a good novel for you to read.

All in all, I am glad I purchased this novel secondhand, as I won’t be picking it up again.
