Melinda Metz grew up in San Jose, California. People sometimes ask if she knows the way there. She kinda does, but she has an off-kilter sense of direction, so to be confident of arriving, it's better to consult some kind of navigational device.

Her mother tried to teach her to read in kindergarten, but Melinda had no interest. She also had no interest in learning to write her name. (FYI, when Melinda was in kindergarten it was all about finger-painting, play time, and naps.) Eventually, she mastered both and even majored in English at San Jose State University.

After college, Melinda moved to Manhattan to seek her fortune, which involved learning to identify fruits and vegetables while working at a grocery store,
making $2.73 working backstage for an off-off Broadway play (her part of the box-office profits), and editing books.

Melinda and the lovely and talented Laura J. Burns pretty much became unofficial writing partners when they were editors at the same company. They teamed up to brainstorm story ideas, and at some point their brains fused in some key places. Later they worked on the Roswell High book series, Laura developing and editing the series, Melinda writing.

That series led to Melinda and Laura, now an official writing team, writing two TV pilots, moving to L.A. to work on the Roswell TV show, and briefly living in Toronto while on the writing staff of 1-800-Missing. They both continue to write books, together and separately.

Laura and Melinda's new book, Sanctuary Bay, a YA thriller, is coming out in January 2016. It's set at an ultra-exclusive private school on an island. Once a student is accepted to the school, they must stay until graduation. No visits home, no contact with the outside world at all. Find out why in January!

The first four books in Melinda's new middle-grade mystery series,S.M.A.R.T.S., are out now. The books involve a group of kids in a makerspace club and they all have lots of science info. For all the cool geeks out there!

Melinda lives in Concord, NC with her dog, Scully (yes, she loves the woo-woo so much she named her dog after a kickass X-Files character). She has never regretted learning to read and write her name.

The Stowaway is the sixth book in the Roswell High series of ten books, upon which the television series was based (a quarter of a century ago!) The television iteration didn't stick as closely to the plotline after the first book, so it can be seen as an interesting alternate history story. The books were targeted for adolescent girls, and the main focus is on the angst of teen romance, but the science-fiction twist adds a bit of a fun twist. This focuses more on two characters who weren't tv cast members, Adam and Cameron. Michael was captured by Valenti and after his escape is having trouble recovering from the trauma. He's aided by three girls, Cameron, Isabel, and Maria... Lots of romance; the Michael/Maria-Isabel/Alex drama continues, as well as the never-ending Liz (who's Ortecho in the books, not Parker)-Max drama, and they all seem to hold hands a lot, and, oh yeah, there's interplanetary stuff going on, too. It ends on another cliffhanger... poor Alex. When the television series became popular Pocket reprinted the books with photographs of the cast on the covers, so the characters don't look much like they're described.

Once Michael has been rescued from the government compound, there are still consequences that have to be dealt with. Cameron, the girl who was spying for Sheriff Valenti, is trying to be honest with them, but worries that she will lose her new friends. Michael has to make a decision about which girl he has feelings for; Maria, Isabel, or Cameron. And their new alien friend appears to have turned evil overnight! How can they protect themselves when they aren't even sure what is going on?

I loved the Roswell TV show when I was a teenager, and it was so fun to rediscover this story through the books! I don't think I would have enjoyed the books now as an adult if I didn't already have the nostalgia of the TV show.

I like that the books are different than the TV show and have different plot lines. It keeps it interesting for me, and it's fun to see how the books differ from the show. The character's personalities are a little different too. Michael is way more funny and less brooding. Isabel is more haughty and proud. Alex is more confident. Max is way less calm than in the TV show. It's weird to see these different sides to their personalities.

The writing is really dorky and has all the high school tropes that you would expect from a 90s teen novel. But I don't care! I love it anyway! Most people would probably roll their eyes at the teen angst, but it just makes me laugh because I already adore the characters.

I can't wait to read more from this series!

Ok, this book has some ridiculousness to it. Some real villain mustache twirling at the end. Some science cringy worm hole tech. But it was entertaining and fun. 🤷🏻‍♀️ on to the next.

When I got to the end of book #6, I was shook. I happened to be sitting on the floor and fell over. I am emotionally not ready for book #7. Mirror-touch synesthesia is real.

These books have not disappointed me yet. I'm continually impressed with their friendship. Midway through the story, Maria asks Alex:
"Did I used to have a life? I mean, what did I do when I wasn't doing this?"
"You mean before the alien invasion? You were enjoying your glory days, gathering up the memories you would treasure in your old age. "
"Can I ask you a horrible question? Do you wish that we didn't know the truth about Michael and Max and Isabel?"
"It would be easier... But no. What about you? Do you wish you could go back in time to before it happened?"
"No. I don't want to go back. "

This book takes place right after the escaped the compound and trying to figure out what’s the deal with Adam

Talking about “what’s the deal” Michael is in a love square ( I told you these kids are horny all the time) he is into Maria but also Isabel ( pretty much her sister) AND Cameron ( some girl he met one week ago)

Also he almost had sex with Cameron
Turns out she was working for Valenti ( who is dead)

Adam is turning into this evil alien

And Maria and Isabel are just waiting for Michael to make a chose on who he wants to get out with ( the answer is Cameron but she is the enemy)

While Alex is just waiting because Isabel broke up with him ( waiting for Michael to pick her)

Wellllllllll

Noooow poor Alex WTF
When trying to send Dupris ( the new bad guy) into the galaxy Max opened a wormhole and sent Alex BY MISTAKE in their home planet
Now I know he will probably be saved or something but in real life homeboy would just be dead 😵 ( sorry to say)

This is crazy how this could have been a whole big ass book but it’s just 10 books of about 200 pages following the same story line and each book starts were the other ended

One of the best books since the first and third one. I wasn't pleased with the last couple but this one was memorable! I love the introduction of the evil stowaway who had killed the three aliens parents and threatened their lives from the crash incident. This book felt fast paced in a way and yet less focused on the multiple love interests that Michael had accrued. I think what I liked most that it returned back to the sci fi elements.
One thing I wish wasn't apparent in the books was the whole group holding hands and giving Liz, Alex and Maria powers to demonstrate their usefulness in a battle. It's soo cringy! I'm sure if I was younger, I would think this is the coolest thing but just no. But neverless, I enjoyed this book and I recommend it. It was a refreshing change from the other books. Especially the twist in the end. I should've seen it coming. Well done Melinda; You know how to keep a gal interested.

Everyone is out of the Project Clean Slate complex but Adam seems different. There's actually evil in him, and it can transfer between people. We do learn who the evil is, which makes a lot of sense in hindsight. That was cool.

But then to get rid of him, the consciousness tells Max they can help him make a wormhole! So he does! And it can only suck things not bolted down, because a wormhole wouldn't suck in bolted down stools. Adam's aura is of course a different color because that is how auras work. And at the end, they can't figure out what's wrong even though the aliens can see auras.

Michael kisses all three girls and Maria gives him a random ultimatum.

For the first half or so the love drama was ugh but that twist in the middle was so good! (Maybe I'm just dumb but I did not see it coming!) Having other aliens as the threat ups the stakes quite a bit. I also enjoyed seeing how Max struggled with his desire to connect with his roots and his people but also to remain to true to himself as an individual. The ending left me excited to read the next installment (I can't wait to see ).

Teenage alien angst with Supervillains, who could want for more? Full of twists and teenage tension this book is a brilliant follow up in the Roswell High series. Continuing on from the last without any time lost, new villains arise, beloved characters are lost and the group dynamic shifts again. Don't finish this book unless you have the next one brought already otherwise you'll be driving yourself insane.

At times I found it hard to follow along. Sometimes things happened or were referenced without me either noticing or they we're poorly written that I didn't catch what was happening. So far I think this has been the weakest book so far in the series.

This one is honestly one of my lesser favorites of the series. It just seems to drag on. But it is necessary to the series.

That was a nice ending. I mean the rest of the story was good too... But the cliff hanger at the end is absolutely fantastic :)

Alright, so last book left off at the gang recusing Michael and Adam setting the compound on fire. We begin this one with Adam unconscious and them wondering what to do with him. They have him back at the UFO museum with Alex, while the rest decide what to do. Max and Liz think he's too dangerous to not keep locked up, while Michael and Isabel have empathy for his situation of being kept at the compound all his life.

Max is learning he can now transform into molecules. (Weird..)

The Isabel/Maria/Michael love triangle is now in full swing. Both girls want him and will do anything to get him. What they don't realize is he's interested in Cameron! When asked to choose between Isabel and Maria, he chooses neither! He reveals to Isabel the dream she saw was of Max dying and of him consoling her.

Michael ends up learning the truth about Cameron spying on him, and she decides to leave town.

Adam is being super weird. He appears to be spaced out and confused. He ends up coming to Liz and telling her he is being controlled by something evil.

The gang learns Elsevan Dupris, the weird reporter, is actually the stowaway that crashed their ship! He has come back to finally retrieve the ring. He is controlling both Adam and Isabel and learns the location of the cave where it is being hidden.

Max channels the energy of the consciousness and is able to buy some time to regroup and figure out what to do while Dupris escapes along with Isabel and Adam. They decide the best solution would be to open a black hole and send him through.

They need to learn the location that Adam and Isabel are being held, so Michael enters Isabel's dream and she tells him that Cameron knows where they are.

They find Cameron, and realize that she's wearing Isabel's necklace. She says she got it from a child on the bus. (Dupris had digusied their bodies to look like children.) Cameron takes them back to the stop they got off at.

They are almost immediately taken hostage because Dupris has so much power. They fight for awhile, until Max figures out he could transform the whole group into molecules and transport them all out. They end up back at the UFO museum but Dupris follows!

He also has bounty hunters helping him, so the gang decides to transform into Dupris. They end up finally opening the black hole and sending Dupris and the bounty hunters in. They then take the time to change everyone back to their regular selves, but the last Dupris, who is supposed to be Alex, exclaims Max can't change him because he's already himself. They accidently send Alex into the worm hole!

The Stowaway was another excellent installment in the Roswell High series picking up right where The Intruder left off.

Michael Guerin is still having flashbacks to when he was being held by Project Clean Slate as well as his daring escape. But none of his friends understand what he went through so he finds himself turning to Cameron, the mysterious girl he met while being help captive. Cameron Winger fell for Michael in the compound but now that they're free, she doesn't know how to tell him that she was spying on him for Sheriff Valenti. How can she tell Michael the truth without him walking away?

I'm continuing to really enjoy the Roswell High books and how different they are from the TV adaptations. The ending of The Intruder was pretty explosive so I was excited to see what would happen once the story picked back up. With Michael, along with Adam and Cameron, now free from the compound and the compound itself destroyed, the characters wonder if they'll get a reprieve or if more members of Project Clean Slate will come after them. There's also the matter of can they trust Adam or Cameron and the group is fairly split on what they should do next. The collective consciousness plays a big role in what follows and I was once again skeptical about its' motives. The plan Max receives from the consciousness is one that in theory could solve all of their problems but let's be real, nothing ever goes as planned for these kids. Once the plan to stop the bad guy is put into motion, the situation quickly spirals out of control and the book ends on a massive cliffhanger.

With Michael and the others reunited with the group we got to see how Adam and Cameron integrated into the existing group. After Adam's use of his powers in the last book, the group isn't sure they can trust him after what he did and I understood their hesitation. We also got to see Michael dealing with what happened which had him pulling back from his friends and leaning more on Cameron and Adam as they knew what he went through. There was a fair bit of relationship drama as well between Michael and three of the ladies; Maria, Isabel, and Cameron. I did find all the drama to be a bit much and I hope it doesn't drag out for multiple books.

Overall The Stowaway was a great read and I'm looking forward to picking up the next book soon to see how that cliffhanger is resolved.

No! How could this happen? Actually I see exactly how it happened but geez these kids just can't catch a break! Might I just say though that I totally knew something was up with that guy! I wonder how Ray thought he was dead though...or never saw and recognized him...
Poor Adam and Isabel! And all of them really! Also Michael got on my nerves some in this one. I like Michael, I really do, but he needs to pick a girlfriend here! I mean come on, Maria (who I'm rooting for to end up with him!), Isabel, AND Cameron love him? Um, that's a tad excessive. And he needs to make up his mind: it makes him seem fickle, although I don't think he is. He just doesn understand that Maria is perfect for him yet! ;)
One thing though that rang wrong with me was the lack of effect of Sheriff Valenti's death. No one in town seems to wonder what happened and what's Kyle doing without his dad? I couldn't help wondering what the reactions were of the towns people. I also wonder at no one seeing or investigating what used to be the compound... Hmm, maybe it'll get to these things though. They have been awful busy, maybe it'll come up.
Still Awesome though, just like the others! Moving onto book 7 right this instant!

Preliminary thoughts *SPOILERS*:

The Stowaway is Elsevan Dupris a.k.a. Clyde the alien.

The group doubts Adam can be trusted. However, they all soon found out that Adam is being controlled, like a puppet, and soon find out by who: Dupris, who happens to be another alien and the one responsible for the spaceship crash known as the 1947 Roswell Incident. It's not long before Dupris takes control of Isabel as well. The bounty hunters that we met in The Seeker come back to this story and we find out that they are working for Dupris.

In their relationships, we see that Michael becomes more interested in Cameron than he does in Isabel or Maria. Michael's interest in Cameron, however, is tested when he finds out that she betrayed him by revealing to Valenti (in the previous story) who Max and Isabel were.

Trust in Adam is restored by the end of this story...As for trust in Cameron, I think that may be just starting to form. Max creates a wormhole to try and send Dupris back to their home planet, but accidentally sends Alex through instead.

I reserve the right to edit, including add more to, this review in the future.

Its been some time since I've read a Roswell High novel, and so it's understandable if it took me some time to understand what was going on, yet by the end of the first two or so chapters I managed to pick it back up again easily.

However what I'm not happy with is the ending, it nearly made me cry, I was so shocked that this is the way it ended and I definitely didn't see it coming. It is such a cliffhanger that I wanted the sequel in my hands straight away and I wanted to know exactly what will happen next. I didn't have the next book at that time, and I still need to find it in my extensive mountain of books. But as soon as I find the next book I shall be putting it towards the top of the pile as I NEED to read that book soon!

Overall the characters were just as good as always, and I will never stop loving the magic of this series!

This book was annoying. I wanted to read every book of the series, but I don’t think I can do that.. It’s just that I got irritated with the personages and the line of the story. I like stories with imagination but this is too much. If you read a story even if it can’t be true, you have to believe what you read.. So what I want to say is.
I didn’t believe the story and I didn’t got into it..
