Court High #2

Illusions that May

Rate this book
Some stars fall. Others... disappear.

My sister is gone and no one seems to really give a sh*t about that but me. Everyone's made things about them, her memory only that and I'm left to sort through all my own pieces. I'm alone in all this and the dangerous boy with the green eyes ultimately leaves me too. I didn't know him like I thought I did. If I had...

I would have run sooner.

Warning: This enemies-to-lovers, high school romance contains some dark themes and light bullying. The book is not a standalone and is book two in a four-part series of full-length novels. Royal Prinze is the only hero of this tale... good luck getting him to share.!

I think there’s something wrong with me and my English.

Even language in the blurb is awful. Am I the only one seeing this?

“Everyone's made things about them, her memory only that and I'm left to sort through all my own pieces. “

Can someone tell me what she means with this sentence?

this definitely FELT like a sequel, but it was great nonetheless!

picking up right after the cliffhanger in the last book, illusions that may was a fast paced continuation of the plot! my poor em, she absolutely deserves the world in more. with all the court secrets and lies going around, her world is completely turned inside out.

BUTTTTTT….this book introduces one of my personal favourite (to-be dilf) RAMSESSSS. i was super excited to read about him & em’s friendship and it did NOT disappoint!!

as per usual, eden’s writing takes you through such a rollercoaster of emotions & i felt every single one!! with fast paced writing & amazing characters, im super excited to keep reading !!

“Illusions that May” continues the story of Court High.

Picking up where we left off, the heroine finds herself at cross ends- dealing with a tragedy. She soon realizes she’s unwanted, runs away, and what follows is more secrets, deception and revelations..

Honestly, this was very engaging! There’s no loyalty between the characters- the “hero” is a cheating ass, every single person betrays the heroine- one way or another and has lied to her, she is smokes weed, binge drinks, makes rash decisions- the sense of loneliness is strong in this one- waiting for the next ball to drop!

“What happened to me shouldn’t have happened to anyone else. The Court has too much power, and they need to be stopped.”
“And you’re going to stop them?” I asked, shaking my head. “You lied to me, Ramses. Lied about why you were really here. You said you wanted them to see you.”
“They will, and they’ll see you too. They’ll see anyone they’ve screwed over. Your sister deserves justice, December. You do too and me.”

Illusions that May continues right where They The Pretty Stars stopped.

December is left all alone, and the dangerous boy with the green eyes ultimately leaves her too.

She feels betrayed. On top of it all, she's hungry, penniless and still in a search for answers.
She meets a boy who helps her find a job.
One night the routine of her now so called life is cut off. She's right back where she escaped from.
But then the strangest thing happens - the boy who helped her find a job is now in her town, and on top of it all, he goes to the same shool as she does.

She couldn't be more confused, scared and in need of answers. She's determined to find them.
No matter what it takes!

I'm mesmerized and the suspence is killing me! So good.

It felt like a sequel and worse, I hated December basically 90% of the time. But alas, the ending was truly something and I will continue on through Maywood Heights and its many mysteries.

Eh. No. DNFed. 😢 I mean yeah high school drama but this poor girl is going THROUGH IT OKAY. Like- they need to just stop doing this shit to her with the drama BS. She’s been through enough. Mmm…. I don’t know what else to say.
Honestly December is such a great character but I feel like everyone else are just such ass-holes that I can’t stand to read this anymore. Like put me out of this misery.
I thought this would be an easy read….cuz I’m just having a shitty day and a fun fast pasted series. But…no…..

December has my whole heart, however none of these other characters deserve her like piss off ugh. I really wanted to like this I just can’t.. I hope in the ending she gets what she deserves tho.

3.5⭐️ I feel like the more I read from this series, the more I’ll like each book.

After the news of Paige’s death comes out, December finds herself at the police station. At the beginning of the book, December is completely in denial about it all because Royal told her that he heard from her before and she told him she was fine. However, that proved not to be true considering the text came an hour before she died and her dad identified the body. For her funeral, they fly out to California since that is where their mother is buried. At the reception, December asks Royal to go away with her, and he says he will but he doesn’t show up at the bus station and instead sent LJ to give her the ticket. She gets on the bus and ends up in Arizona. She’s sleeping at a homeless shelter and ends up meeting a boy, Ramses, who works at a library. She gets a job at this library to make some money for herself and learns that Ramses is from Maywood Heights too. One day, December is walking around after getting dropped off at her “house” by Ramses and almost gets assaulted, but Knight Reed was there. Initially, he was sent by Royal to check on her, but he decided to bring her home after everything. She stayed at Windsor House for a bit but after seeing an altercation between Royal and his father, she tells him that she’ll leave. December doesn’t want to go back home because she feels like a burden to her father and aunt, so she ends up staying with Rosanna who works for her father. She also ends up going back to school and sees that Royal and Mira are together. One day, Ramses ends up coming back to school and the two continue their friendship that they had started. Turns out Ramses is quite popular, especially considering he’s the mayor’s son. Additionally, we learn that Ramses has some history with the court and they’ve hated him ever since he wouldn’t do the haze that would have entered him into the club. At a Christmas Eve party that December gets invited to, she overhears the boys talking to Ramses and he asks them about the haze that takes place at route 80 and basically is connecting the dots that they may have done this to Paige. Understandably, December is upset and asks him about it, and he claims he’s not exactly sure of anything but he knows that together they can look into it. Also, throughout the book we had some Royal POVs from the past that showed his friendship with Paige and sort of how their dynamic was.

Its 1.58am and i just finished this masterpiece and im not even sorry.

Holy shit! I could not put this down. I read this in like 4 hrs and im obsessed!
This is no doubt one of my favourite series this year! And there is very little of those making this number 3.

What a ride! The mystery, intrigue, suspense, pain, grief, and whirlwind of secrets had me gripped!

I could definitely relate with out protagonist in this book. So much of what she feels and went through i have experienced, so it made the emotional ride so much more deeper for me. Our FMC goes through a time of self discovery and grief and is slowly unravelling the mysteries that seem to be shrouding her on all sides.

So many theories, so many questions and so much suspicion on who could be responsible. Shade is thrown here, there and everywhere. It really makes for a gripping dark bully mysterymance. The world build is amazing in this book, so much detail and depth in everything. So much layers and depth to our characters and even our supporting characters which just do the best job at making you question everything going on and ultimately proving anyone can be the ‘bad guy’. If thats not enough then the emotional rollercoaster you go on with this is definitely worth the ride!

I cannot stress enough how much you need to read this book! This is the second book in the high court series, the first book being ‘They the pretty stars’. Definitely check it out then come dive into this amazing sequel to this four part series!

The first half of this book revolves around the revelations about what happened to Paige, December’s sister, and Royal (and the Court boys) best friend.

December, is heartbroken, then she overhears a conversation between her father and her Aunt C,that sends her reeling.
Eventually she seeks out Royal, convincing him to runaway with her.

He fails to show at the bus station, sending LJ in his place, leaving her with just a one way ticket to Arizona.

Devastated, December lives of what little money and resources she has for months, sleeping rough, and stealing for food.

Until one day, while seeking refuge in the town library, she meet Ramses, the nerdy looking librarian.

The two dance cautiously around each other, until December is able to secure herself a job there.

However, there is something about Ramses.
As much as she likes him and appreciates his company, his curiosity about her past sends up red flags.

One night after offering Ramses up a fake address to take her home.
December ends up in precarious situation in a sketchy neighbourhood.

However, the person that comes to her rescue isn’t Ramses, it’s Knight Reed.

Shocked, to say the least, it isn’t long before Knight is ordering her into his SUV before driving her to the airport, and home to Maywood.

Determined NOT to live with her father again, December finds herself jumping out of the fire, into the frying pan, as she becomes basically on lockdown in her own wing in Windsor House.

After witnessing a heated argument with Royal, and his father, he turns his angry on her.
Thus, causing her to flee her surroundings to live with her fathers friendly housekeeper, Rosanna.
SO.
This puts the relationship between December and Royal right back where it started.
He is back with Mira, and she is back with her home girls, Birdie, Kira, and Shakira.

As the weeks move on towards graduation, end of year parties, and Christmas, December endeavours to put her Royal feelings yo one side, find out just what really happened to her sister on
“Route 80”

Once again, in this second book, the plot is the driving force here, with all the secrecy surrounding Paige.

Maywood is like a “Twin Peaks” type of town that is run by The Court families with all the secrets to hide and to keep.

There are a few groan worthy moments plot wise where you can see the scenarios the author is putting in place to set up,the next drama filled moment.

Case in point:
December thought she was in hiding in Arizona, completely forgetting…ummm
Royal placed her there with the bus ticket.
Plus.
She starts taking selfie once her phone is working again, …for the Social’s ya know.
Only to forget to switch of her LOCATION TAB…*palm slaps forehead* ..FFS!

This or course, leads Knight straight to her…Really? Really? December?

Okay. ..We know this was just a ploy by the author to get December and the boys back together again.

I was disappointed- at the time because, I thought that was the end of her and Ramses, and I couldn’t figure out why the author had bothered to introduced him into the storyline….

Little did i know!??
He would be back, boy would he be back.

At times this story did annoy me though, with just how much these guys pushed themselves into December’s life, and how compliant she was with that.

If this was me, I’d be like - “okay, we might all be friends, but just back the F up a bit”

And how many times do they use her dog to wriggle their way into her good books.

So,it was with a fist punching to the air - that I was happy that things began to pick up again towards the second half of the story.

It took December and Royal splitting up, and the animosity between her and her father to get me back into this story.

I loved the whole Royal, Mira relationship being in December’s face,
I loved the awkwardness between her and her father.

I wanted December to be MORE independent and strong.
With no F’s to give.

This is the story I wanted to read.
And it appears, for now, with the help of Ramses, it just might be the story I get.

Don’t go losing your head around Royal now December, keep your heart wrapped up tight, and find out what the F’ happened to your sister.

I binged the first audiobook in this series yesterday and by today I finished bingeing the next in series - Illusions That May ,and damn it was every bit as gripping as They The Pretty Stars. (The first book in the Court High series.) Avoiding spoilers will be a challenge for this review because there were WOW moments at every turn and from start to finish. Eden O’Neill has continued with the brilliant whirlwind that was the first book in the series and added layer upon layer, of tension, mystery, angst and suspense.
I cannot wait for the rest of this series because it has been a while since a series completely had me within its grasp, the way that this one does.
The narration by Kasi Hollowell and Gregory Salinas delivered fully on every front. These voice actors had me believing they were the characters that they portray because they have great vocal distinction, an energy and intensity to their performance. From start to finish this was a five star listen in every way.

Audio Review:
Illusions That May (Court High, Book 2) writing style and world building aspect bring intrigue and suspense to the 2nd edition of the series. I absolutely love this series and become obsessed with it needing the next audio right now. Revelation of secrets and plot twists unfold and throw a curve. Again; drops a bomb with the ending. I love December's character and strength within herself. Added new characters pique ones curiosity. Overall, a thriller plot with intensity and intrigue.

Kasi Hollowell, Gregory Salinas performed a flawless duet narration. Although, Gregory only voiced a small portion of the audiobook as most of the story is told in December's pov I still loved his performance. Kasi is a amazing narrator and her performance of December is exactly how I would picture her. Her inflection is smooth and she changes it with the emotions expressed. I highly recommend listening to this series as it has all the best ingredients to create a unforgettable listen.

This book left me gutted!! I cried in this book and felt so much pain for what December went through. 😭Then prince went and just hey while your there here just throw her ass right under the bus some more. I understand why he did it but the way he did it was an ass move 💔When she finally get a bit of reprieve something else happens and sometimes I am thinking like girl you running away break that damn phone so they won’t track you like hello. The one friend you meet you just cut him off really? Ok I can understand why she is iffy of getting close to anyone after what she has been through. 🙄 I definitely have not slept reading this series... it is very well written and literally keeps me captivated that I can’t put this book down. Books that take me for roller coaster ride of emotions is definitely always a five star and this didn’t disappoint!

Oh how my heart was breaking for December after the end of book one. I held out hope just like she did. After all that she had gone through and now add this to the list. But she is strong. After she has a breakdown, of course who wouldn't? She gets up and sets out to find out what happened to her sister. She has no one now, but she thought she had Royal, but guess what? There is more there than she knows.

Along the way she meets someone new, someone who knows more than he is letting on. Can she trust him? But really can she trust anyone?

Wow guys, so much happens in this book, it will leave you breathless. So many left turns. Trying to figure out what is happening, who can be trusted, are your friends really your friends? And can December really trust the one person she wants to the most.

If you have not started this series yet, I highly recommend that you do. So very good and I cannot wait to see what happens after the ending of Illusions That May!!

Even though Eden was distraught about her missing sister she had made peace with her new living situation until it all came crashing down. Her sister has passed away and she feels ostracized by not only her family but the friends that she had made as well. Needing to escape the turmoil she finds herself in she escapes to Arizona which is where she meet Ramses.

There is so much more to Ramses than she could have imagined but when circumstances bring her back to the very place she was trying to escape the surprises keep coming and she is caught in the middle unsure who to believe as everyone appears to have an agenda when it comes to her.

I thought that the narrators did a great job at bringing out not only the emotional side of the story but the intrigue side as well. 🎧The Flock

This is book 2 in the Court High Series and can't be read as a standalone. It starts right where They The Pretty Stars leaves off.

December Lindquist is shook, she just found out her sister is dead. The story doesn't add up. She's hurt, she's confused, she's a little pissed off, and she's very much overwhelmed. She doesn't feel like she belongs anywhere and just wants to get away. Then Royal drives a knife straight through the open wound in her heart.

When she leaves, she doesn't expect the outcome that she gets, but she's stubborn and does what it takes to keep going. Things aren't easy but she has made a place for herself and is starting to find a little bit of, dare I say, happiness. Maybe it's more like peace and acceptance. Either way she isn't as upset as she was when she left.

She meets somebody when she is there and is shocked by the connection they have, even though she isn't fully aware of how close a connection it really is. Then her life is upended yet again and she is brought right back to her own personal hell, even though she thought she had finally escaped. Then when the new kid shows up she is really confused, how is it even possible?

I loved this book so much! I love Ramses and I love their ease of relationship, but the twists and turns had me on the edge of my seat and then the book ends and I sit there flabbergasted wondering what else December doesn't know. What is truly going on and why? Who is the good guy and who is the bad guy? Is anything she learned true? How many more times are they going to completely blindside her and will she survive it all?

I have so many theories about what is actually going on and none of them are remotely the same. There are so many different players and ideas running through my head I don't know who to trust anymore. I don't know how I want things to end and I don't know if I trust the court or Ramses. I loved Royal so much in the first book, and then this book turned my world around and now I think I might hate him. I am angry with it all but I feel there is something more going on than what we are seeing and I hope with all I have that he is going to redeem himself! I really just want to see justice and see December find her happiness, whether it be with somebody or by herself, I just want to see her happy. She deserves it after the trials she has faced in such a short life.

Gosh this book is so annoying!

December is such a child acting out.. but I can't blame her for that especially because Paige passed away. But the things she does..like why? And her obsession with Royal! Okay maybe it isn't a full obsession..but everything just ends with that douchebag's name after everything that's happened. He ditched her when she needed him and I mean things could have gone bad..like she could have ended up dead like Paige, when he also left Paige when she needed him. And his apologies are rubbish if he doesn't mean it.

I kept imagining alternative storylines which felt so much more better than how this story is continuing.. because the way the story is going..it's bad. Like I hate it. Getting a girl caught up with feelings and ending it by saying that things got too heavy?

And for the girl to be too caught up in a so called relationship that wasn't even a relationship in the first place. I mean the two have had less than 10 close interactions.
1. The boathouse
2. The night after Mira passes out drunk
3. The night they do it
4. The hallway after class where she doesn't join the guys for movie night
5. The argument about going to Section 80
6. Prom
7. Prom night
8. Sister's funeral wake

Out of these 8 close interactions, they've probably spent less than few minutes with each other for most of them. And why does she have to keep getting distracted by this a-hole?!

Gosh I'm frustrated reading this series. But I can't end it. So update and my rating will follow after completing this book.

UPDATE- That ending was damn...and I stand by Royal being a douchebag and December being an idiot still thinking about him. But I'm intrigued now especially with Ramses's involvement. Shit. Now I have to continue the series.

Overall Opinion: I was expecting a lot more, and I got like nothing. I kind of hated this book a lot. And I feel like I’m not gonna like the next book either just from the ending of this one.

Brief Summary of Storyline: December deals with the lost of her sister.

Point Of View (POV): single present POV with December. We get past snippets in Royals POV with Paige.

Overall Pace of Story: it was good. Same as last. I felt that because I want things to happen and it’s a short book I was getting frustrated more.

Instalove: no

H (Hero) rating: Royal 1 — he pissed me off this book. I can’t like him. I actually find him so infuriating.

h (heroine) rating: December 5 — she deserves more. And so did Paige.

Favorite Character (FC): Hershey. Still. I don’t really have a favorite character.

Favorite Part: this felt so filler to the story that I don’t have one.

Sadness level: 0

Push/Pull: yes. The whole book is push and pull.

Spice level: 0

Descriptive spice: they go at it once I believe in the beginning. Nothing after. Dry. Very dry.

OW (Other Woman)/OM (Other Man) drama: yes. Royal has officially Kept Mira. I fucking hate that.

Cheating: no

Separation: yes. Royal keeps his distance. Everyone does really.

Possible Triggers: death. Hazing.

Closure: December finds out her sister may have died in a hazing. In result she is planing to team up with Arizona to find out.

Will I read again?: nope.

Green quote:none.

Any last thoughts?: it was and feels like a massive filler that was needed but not fun to read.

I think I liked this book? I don’t know. Similar to the first book nothing really happens and until the last 5 pages and then it ends on a cliff hanger. It honestly feels like the author sat down and wrote an 800 page book and then just split it into 4 books. There’s no feeling of a crescendo or climax in this book, until you get to the last couple pages and all hell breaks loose.

I also once again feel like there was no real chemistry between December and Royal? I mean her internal monologue insinuates they had a long heartfelt relationship with a traumatic breakup when in reality they talked a little bit for a couple weeks and hooked up twice. Like they didn’t really date. And it wasn’t really hot and heavy. So the emphasis on their nonexistent chemistry is weird. It almost feels like there was supposed to be another book developing their initial relationship and we all missed the memo.

I wish there would have been trigger warnings regarding child abuse, neglect, and grooming. Because I was not expecting that. I know content warnings are usually reserved for the sexual side of things but there were no content warnings in the actual book and Google just lists “dark romance and light bullying.” I feel like descriptions of physical child abuse, as well as mental/emotional child abuse and neglect deserve their own trigger warning.

I don’t want to be too harsh. It was a fine book and I will continue to read through the series. Some of these things are just frustrating.

This book picks up right were the first one left off. December still wants answers after she hears the news about her sister. Royal, Jax, Knight and LJ are still trying to protect her even if she doesn't want it. The guys slowly start to push her away and she runs back to the only place that feels like home to her. We slowly start to get some answers to some of our questions but some questions are still unanswered. This book is full of drama, suspense, twist and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I can't wait to read the next book and to see where are journey takes us next.

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my fair and honest review.

Like there’s a whole murder mystery going on and as much as I wanna beat the life out of the mc cuz she’s so annoying..I’m dying to know what happens next. And their such quick reads, I’m not even noticing how time passed. If you sit for 3 hours straight reading you’ll be done.
