I bought this version of the Bible for my mother-law after months of sending her daily verses by text. She’s 82 and had never read the Bible; in fact, she was shocked that anyone would.
I chose the NLT because it’s a though for though translation and easy to understand for new believers. I’ve read it myself but on YouVerssion. However, when the book arrived the text was not at all large as described. It’s about 12 point font. This was way too small for her to see, so she asked for another. I bought her a huge print non-study Bible, NIV translation. It’s heavy but the test is easy to see and read. She’s enjoying it but doesn’t read daily.
I’m just happy she is finally reading scripture! I kept this for myself or to donate, since I had written her name in it already. I recommend the NLT for new Christians or those who have trouble understanding the Bible. I’ve read this version, but now prefer the CSB, NIV, ESV, or NKJV. Usually I check all those translations to ensure I’m getting the most out of it. I also watch videos explaining each verse.
Great for new readers, easy to understand, but beware if you purchase this particular one as a hardcover because the font is not large. It does have a pretty pink cover and makes a great gift for Christians (or anyone) reading the Bible for the first time.
Caveat: I am not a biblical scholar or an expert in translation. Moreover, I prefer the KJV because of its historical tradition, reliability, and poetic language so I am biased that way.
The most frustrating aspect of the NLT is the number of different translations all referring to themselves as NLT. As such, one NLT publication is not necessarily the same as another NLT. What gives? Regardless of these problems and other scholars who claim dubious translation of the original texts, I find the contemporary language helpful in understanding the KJV where the older language trips me up.
In this particular publication, the font size is excellent. I would prefer a slightly thicker page, but bleed-through is not distracting. What really makes this publication great to me (and the 5*) is the visual overview at the back, the Tyndale verse finder, and the linking of the bible to an app with additional information and analysis. This makes the book quite powerful and robust in its presentation.
While we can endlessly search for a perfect translation, but it may be more helpful to find a translation that best meets our aims. The New Living Translation is a thought-for-thought, or dynamic equivalence, translation. That means that it updates outdated idioms to contemporary language. That makes it the most easily digestible translation, best for those just starting to get acquainted with the text. For me, I like getting new perspectives every time I read through. The disadvantage with any translation, of course, is that it carries the biases of its translators, however unintended. As always, getting historical and cultural context enhances reading if any literature, but especially one worse adherents will take as authoritative.
I really enjoyed my year with the NLT translation. The translation shines in the old testament particularly the major and minor prophets.
I enjoy the clean lines that the digital notes of the Filament edition but I found myself note getting my smart phone out to use them at all after the first few months.
I began a New Testament Bible Reading Plan on January 1, 2023 - 5 mins a day for 5 days a week. I stuck with the plan all year and read the entire New Testament. I loved the plan and will do it again. But for 2024, I’m going to try to work through the entire Bible.
I love the NLT translation. I read from quite a few other translations, but I am always drawn back to the NLT because of how readable it is, and it is the first translation that I used to read through the whole Bible. My church also uses the NLT. So, I was excited to see that Tyndale was coming out with another format of the Filament Bible: a thinline reference.
These Bibles are perfect to carry in your purse and bag for church, or wherever else you may be headed. It is a little bigger than my hand (I have fairly small hands), and contains the NLT text in a 9 point font. If that size font is too small for you, they also have a large print thinline that just came out as well (10 point font), and a giant print edition that is coming out in January (12 point font). I have the soft leather-look teal edition, and it has a nice design on the front, with the words "Holy Bible" under the design. The spine has "Tyndale", "Holy Bible", and "NLT on it near the top. It has a paste down liner, with the same swirl design that you see on the cover. It is Smyth-sewn, so it lays flat when you are reading it. It has one single sided satin ribbon in a matching teal/green color. The pages have really shiny silver gilding. The text is in a double column format, and it is a red letter text.
What I really like about this Bible is that it is a non-cluttered reading experience. There is an introduction to the Filament app and NLT translation, and a few fun study aides in the back, but otherwise it is just the text. That makes it the perfect Bible for reading, or following along with during a sermon. But, if you want to dig deeper, you have that option because of the Filament app. You just have to grab your phone or other device, scan the page number with the little Filament symbol beside it, and you have study notes at your fingertips! The Filament app is free to download, and you get access to 25,000 study notes, over 350 videos, 40+ maps, more than 400 profiles and articles, 1,500 devotionals, and even a library of worship music. It is everything that you could ever want in a study Bible, plus some! I especially love the visuals that are included, and the videos from the Bible Project. The resources in the back of the Bible include a verse finder, and a visual overview of the Bible (includes maps and other graphics).
Whether you are a new Christian or a seasoned believer, the Filament Bible would make an excellent addition to your library. It is portable, offers an uncluttered reading experience, and there is a wealth of information available at your fingertips with the Filament app. If you love the NLT, and want a fresh Bible reading experience, pick up a thinline or large print thinline Filament Bible, or hold out until January for the giant print version. It will add depth and meaning to your Bible study time! I received a copy of this Bible from Tyndale, in return for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
This Bible is very small and compact with red letter and indexed. The cover is a pretty teal and embossed. I got it to take to church and the bonus is when I'm reading, there is an app that accompanies the Bible that allows you to take a snapshot of the page you're reading and the app will open helpful study tools and information on that book of the Bible.
