The only thing more terrifying than taking a life is creating one. The positive pregnancy test rocks my world harder than any bomb or bullet. Like the hurricane bearing down on Miami, it threatens total destruction.
I'm confident I can escape Miami, evade the mercenaries intent on killing me, and uncover the people who hired them. But telling the father I'm pregnant... raising a child...
I'm not cut out for motherhood.
I know I'll survive. It's everyone I love who dies.
I write because I love to read, but I have specific tastes...
If I was offered a job as a professional reader with no strings attached, I would take it. Getting paid to sit around and read while drinking tea all day—I'm there. Since that’s not possible, I became an author.
I write the books I want to read—stories that give me the immersive reading experiences I crave. When a series grabs me, and it's all I can think about, I'm SO happy. When my inner dialogue starts sounding like the protagonist of my current read, I think, Oh yeah, this is IT. This is what I love.
When I finish a book, and I NEED to immediately grab the next one in the series, that’s the intensity I crave. When I binge read an entire series, I want to feel like my own reality changed—as if the stories I read affected the real world just a little. After a great series I'm a little wiser, a little more grateful for my everyday existence, and a little more aware that my personal perspective is not everyone's.
Personally, I like to spend time in fictional worlds where justice is exacted with a vengeance, even though good and bad are not always black and white. Give me raw stories with a main character who occasionally makes me laugh, is flawed like we all are, and feels like a friend by the end of the first few chapters. They don’t have to be a friend I always LIKE, per se, but a part of me has to root for them.
For me, the sentence structure is important. Too much passive voice, and I'm out. I do not mind four-letter words at all though. Sex in books can go either way—fade to black or show me the details, but either way there has to be a reason it’s in the story. I'm also into heroic pets, plots that seem totally unhinged but all come together in the end with a BANG, and long series so I always have more to look forward to.
Those are the types of stories I love reading, so that’s how I write. If you’re into some or all of the above then I think we are going to get along fantastically.
Definitely lots of twists and turn and darn isn't sydney exacerbating, fearless and kick a$$. I just couldn't get to the end fast enough. Who will sydney end up with? How does she keep evading the authorities?
If you're looking for a mystery series this isn't it. This is more like a Jason Born book... action and intrigue. I actually am taking a break from this series after this book. Not only because my boxed sets have ended but because I just can't take the self sabotage that Sydney just continues to spew at every turn. As selfless as she thinks she is she is actually super selfish. The entire Mulberry/Maxim thing is overdone and honestly I just don't care anymore which one of them gets her or which one she chooses because I'm tired of this trope. Dan Dan the stalker man has got to go. It's creepy and doesn't serve the storyline well. Lenox and Petra are a snooze fest (although I hear that picks up) but right now I honestly don't care about any of the characters anymore except for Blue... and possibly Merl and maybe Anita. They may be the only really selfless out for justice for the people characters in this book about justice and equality for everyone series.
That being said the fact that I feel this way about these characters might just mean that the author is doing a fantastic job writing... but this is now the 4th book in a row where I'm actually hoping that Sydney, Mulberry, or Maxim die because then this never ending triangle of obsession and possession ends. (spoiler ahead)
Last but not least Sydney sort of making up with her mom, the tarot reading, and seeing Hugh and Santiago together is the bright spot in this otherwise dull story line that never ends. And this supposed shock news that Natalia was still alive and Robert had a son... yeah, called that two books ago. Please Please Please (and I know by now we're already working on book 19) if I do decide to read the remaining 5 books make them better. Make me actually care about the cause you're crusading against and care about the characters lives by bringing them back to doing justice an not just making themselves look good. Make them stand alone books. Stop with the cliffhangers.
I have to say I get so excited when a new Sydney Rye book is released and Savage Grace did not disappoint. I wonder how many women sit and stare at the little stick they just peed on in awe, and wonder?
I always know when I sit down with a Sydney Rye book I won't be getting up until the very end and Savage Grace was no different I just loved it. I love a story you can completely fall into and the ending comes way too soon, then you start going through the stages of a book hangover, grief, anger and then realization that I have to wait for the next book to find out what happens next...lol
Sydney's world has been rocked in multiple ways. Sydney keeps going over in her head how everyone she loves dies, now someone is trying to destroy Joyful Justice and Sydney is not sure who to truly trust or if she can truly trust anyone... The ending rocked my very soul and now I'm left wondering how Sydney is going to handle everything thrown at her.
Savage Grace (A Sydney Rye Mystery, Book #12) - a review by Rosemary Kenny
Sydney Rye's back in her 10th of the A Sydney Rye Mystery series, Savage Grace, by Emily Kimelman. An unexpected positive result to a pregnancy test and how to tell the father, (Mulberry, her current paramour) become incidental, as INCEL mercenaries are determined to end both her life-and the baby's. As usual Joyful Justice are deeply involved in making sure Sydney and other innocents are protected if necessary...but a huge hurricane heading for Miami is complicating their plans to take INCEL down for good. Then there's the added influence of Robert Maxim - by trusting him, are Sydney and her team nursing a viper in their collective bosom? Read Emily Kimelman's Sydney Rye Mystery #12, Savage Grace, to find out the thrilling finale's revelations - you'll be amazed!
This was book 12 of the series. I love this series and suggest you begin with book 1 and read all the way through! You will fall in love with Sydney and Blue won’t be able to put the books dow! Can’t wait for #13 to come out!
Well it was a long wait for this and I wasn't disappointed. I'm so glad I get to be a member of the ARC team and first read. Sydney Rye, Robert, Mulberry, April, Dan - and don't forget Blue, Nila and Frank are all here and at their best with twists and turns all over the place. Exciting as ever and not to be missed. And there is a new storyline don't forget. It starts with a monster hurricane heading to Miami and a trip to Columbia folliwed by Panama City, Washington DC and more back to a storm ravaged Miami. Oh I so didn't want it to end!
I enjoyed this book it is different from the type I usually read. You had action from beginning to end. The name before each chapter helped keep the people and story straight. I recommend this book to anyone that likes a good book.
Wow. This is definitely a different turn to Sydney ‘s usual story. A big surprise for her and the readers. Couldn’t stop reading until I got to the end to find out what happens. Loved it.
I don’t even know where to begin. I am literally mind blown. So many twists and turns with ALL the feels. We are 12 books deep in this series and it just keeps getting better and better. I really don’t know how Kimelman does it. I have to say that by far my most favorite character is Frank! That lovable beast of a pup has stolen my heart! I love Sydney and Mulberry. I love Dan, Merl, and all of the Joyful Justice gang. I missed Hugh and Santiago. I even admit that I am loving Robert Maxim. These characters are more than just words on a page. They’re drawn out and complex. Their struggles to find peace in their chaotic lives is hard fought. No rest for the weary and all, right? How does one be a vigilante mercenary while contemplating impending motherhood? I for one can’t wait to see how Sydney moves forward from here.
It's been three years since I read book 11 and while I remembered all the characters and the ending of the last book, I struggled for several chapters remembering some other details. Not sure why I stopped reading this series because I do remember liking it very much (and still do).
Anyway, there's been three new books that I need to catch up on and this one was as fast-paced and action packed as I remember the series being. I loved that Sydney now has added two of Blue's offspring (from the last book) to her fur baby crew. There's still the question of what Sydney is going to do now that she's pregnant because she simply can't continue to live her life like she has been up to this point.
In typical Kimelman fashion, the ending was a shocking twist/turn. Can't wait to read the next book.
Wow, I didn’t see this coming. No spoiler here BUT I will say I did not expect this. Joyful Justice finds itself once again in the crosshair of powerful criminal enterprises. Robert Maxim acts as Sydney’s white knight, Mulberry still in hiding and circumstance bring Sydney and her mother together again. This series is a roller coaster ride and this book is no exception. Already have Blind Vigilance downloaded waiting on me to finish this review.
Action, adventure and drama. Highly entertaining. Great characters and great flow. I appreciate intelligent, independent and strong woman characters but I do not like them so stubborn that they come off as not intelligent. Sydney is almost there. Please keep her on the right side of the line. I knew this was a serial, which I normally don't read but I was curious, so I will try to get to the next one. Too many books on my lineup.
There is a reason why she only has 40 reviews on Goodreads. Got to the Joyful Justice videoconference from Panama (where she probably references every character and location in the previous 11) and decided that my time was too valuable to spend on this kind of dreck. You decide. I am not particulary fond of her dog, Blue. 1 star for me, 1 star for Emily.
This story did nothing for me. I haven't read the previous books and possibly that would have made a difference in what seemed to be a lot of holes in the story. The writing style seemed a bit stilted to me and was hard to read. I did finish it to the end but really wish I hadn't wasted the time.
I have to admit I’m hooked on Sydney Rye and her escapades. In this book she’s trying to wrap her brain around the idea of parenting - and she better be quick about it because that baby’s only got about 7 more months inside. In addition, her mother is speaking for the Her prophet, and the Incels are out to get her. And someone’s also out for Robert.
When you can't tell reality from dreams I think you're in pretty deep stuff. And when we don't even know what's real or not, that author's creating another playing field. And I'm curious where we're going from here. There have been so many surprises in this series, so many twisted pathways. This series puts you through the ringer, it's a roller coaster ride of a read!!!

Awesome SERIES. STRONG FEMALE HERO AND BAD ASS VIGELANTE JUSTICE. GREAT CHARACTERS. EVERY BOOK. IS A GREAT READ. CRIME SOLVING AND GETTING THE BAD GUYS NEVER FELT SO GOOD. COULDNOT PUT THESE BOOKS DOWN
Riveting is the first word to come to mind. I have thoroughly enjoyed each and every one of the books in this series. But this one was riveting! It had the fast paced adventure that I have come to expect with Emily’s series. I was unable to put this one down though!
In this story the alliances formed and broken make a very complicated, delightful tale. Sydney is secretly pregnant through about half the book. I loved this book, but I isn't for children.
This book felt like it was so fast and yet not much super significant happened. It reminds me of some of the earlier books in the series with the action after action. Definitely a "I don't believe it" moment at the end. And the very ending was super weird and not a good ending.
This story was a little hard to follow. All the weird organizations and their weird names. The purpose for each is crazy. A lot of it did not make sense. Did not think it was a good read!
Oh man, so much happens in this book. This series just keeps getting better and better. Every detail I could write about this book would be a spoiler, so all I will say is - damn, this is a terrific series.
Enjoyable characters and storyline. I have to say, the dogs are what really makes these books special. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
