Conner “CJ” Montgomery I have one goal in life – finally prove my father wrong by becoming the youngest partner in my law firm. I’ve got time for exactly three things: work, work, and more work. I can’t lose, until my boss gives me one final challenge: make the first mentorship program at our Baltimore office a success and the promotion is mine.
Returning home brings up too many memories. Too many distractions. Especially when I run into Colette Dubois, the only woman who ever tempted me to make my life about more than work.
On the verge of the biggest success of my life, what will it cost me to take one more risk?
Colette Dubois I already gave up my dream of performing on Broadway to take care of my ailing mom. When they threaten to turn the lights off in my dying community theater, too, I won’t let anything stop me from saving it. It’s the only thing to bring a little light into the darkest period of my life.
I can’t afford to be vulnerable, but that’s exactly what I am the moment CJ Montgomery walks back into my life after ten years of living on the West Coast. We shared a kiss all those years ago. I thought we would have the summer after high school together, but he fled in the middle of the night.
Unfortunately my heart doesn’t know when to quit. Not when we spend time together. Not when we share an unexpected kiss. Not when he repeatedly tells me he won’t be here long.
Taking a risk isn’t easy for me, but this one could change everything.
Gemma Smith never imagined one day she would write a book.
After several years of being an avid reader of romance novels, one day a story popped into her head. She decided to run with it, and here she is today adding author to her never ending list of titles.
Gemma resides in Maryland with her very supportive husband, two adorable children and one crazy husky-mix puppy. When she isn’t behind a laptop screen, she prefers to be on a beach with a good book on her Kindle and a drink in her hand.
I let this review simmer a while in my brain; for a debut book, it did not read like one. I was pulled into the story, invested in the characters immediately. I am still thinking about the book, which means I will probably do a re-read soon.
In a second chance for CJ and Colette, he returns to MD after ten years on the west coast. There is a lot of discovery on both sides as time and life has continued for both. CJ has been out of the family loop in his absence, plus spending time with Colette, has him thinking about his goals. Life has not been kind to Colette’s dreams, yet she has found ways to make new ones with the help of his family. While the angst is low, there is a little mystery keeping the reader engaged. The relationship development for the two was perfect, with lots of chemistry and steam.
It is a recommended one-click for this book, and I can not wait to read more. I love the characters the author has created, and the family dynamic should keep us in books for a while to come.
I received an advanced copy from the Author; this is my voluntary review.
This book was so cute yet kept you on the edge of your seat not knowing what would happen next. I loved all of the side characters just as much as I loved CJ and Lettie. Also LOVED the fact that this book was based on Baltimore.
I hope Gemma continues to write because I need to know about the other Montgomery brothers!!!
This books is a contemporary romance in all ways. There is some mystery interweaved into the storyline, but it’s mainly about CJ and Colette reuniting after ten years leading their own lives.
I enjoyed CJ and Colette, but did not feel their past was made very clear as the story went forward. There were times I felt like I understood who they were in high school. It felt like they were acquaintances during some portions of the story, while at others it sounds like they were the closest of friends since childhood. I do wish their background was easier to understand as a reader so I felt more invested in how they interacted as adults.
Additionally, the reasons they never dating growing up didn’t make much sense to me. I needed more to feel invested in them. The story itself is sweet and not stressful as a reader. Their love was easy for the most part and their love felt genuine.
Take the Risk, Gemma Smith’s debut novel, is a contemporary second-chance romance told in first person dual POV. The story follows the relationship between Colette Dubois, a teacher and former Broadway actress, and her former high school crush, Conner “CJ” Montgomery, an ambitious lawyer who has returned to his hometown for the summer after ten years away.
I loved Collette and CJ’s story. They were both likeable, relatable characters; and I enjoyed the secondary characters just as much. The chemistry between Colette and CJ sizzled on the page, and the story kept me engaged from beginning to end. I particularly enjoyed the dynamics in the Montgomery family and the special relationship each member had with Collette. The story was sweet, steamy, and a strong debut. I look forward to reading Nathan's and David’s stories in future books.
CJ is a attorney that is on the fast path to be the youngest partner. He is being sent to his hometown to run a mentor program for the summer. Colette is a teacher and runs a theater program and is now in charge of a benefit at the end of the summer. When high school friends CJ and Colette reconnect over a summer of him working back at home it’s a instant connection. These two have great chemistry and a great friendship. I especially enjoyed the relationship Colette had with CJ’s family. This is a great quick read that had a few great stories lines that I would Love to see expanded on! I’m looking forward to reading more books by this author!
Take the Risk is the story of Colette and CJ, high school friends who come together 10 years later in a mix of work and life circumstances. Colette is adjusting to a loss and changes in how her life looks in regards to her dreams. CJ is head down and hustling toward his big goals and of trying to live life better than his father.
Their relationship comes from years of secret crushes, shared unexpected circumstances and mutual friends. I loved the friendship between Colette and her girls. I enjoyed watching CJ learn and grow with his family relationships. I thought the story with his work and her ex were very intriguing.
I really enjoyed my first book by Gemma Smith. For a debut novel, she written it very well.
I loved how CJ and Colette connected when he first came back home. It was just easy for them to be together and start back their friendship. But of course, their chemistry led them to something more. I loved both of their characters especially Colette. She's really strong and when things got tough she turn things around. Then there's a whole thing about CJ's relationship with his family that got me invested.
Take the Risk is a beautiful story about two flawed people and the love they share. Gemma Smith writes in a way that draws you in from the first page and doesn't let you go even days after reading. I was intrigued and anxious for more within minutes when I started this book, and I'm still thinking about it more than a week later!
I love when an author creates a whole cast of characters you fall in love with and want to know more about. This story is about Colette and CJ, who were friends in high school, but hadn't seen each other in ten years. When CJ finally steps foot in his hometown a decade after deciding he wasn't interested in spending any more time in a place where his father could hurt him so much, he runs into Colette, a girl he crushed on in high school.
Through this story, CJ not only falls for Colette, he's reminded of what it means to be part of a family, part of a community. His growth is so great to watch, even when he does the typical hero thing and messes things up! The author had me so invested, it was difficult to put the book down.
This is absolutely one-click material! It's a debut novel, so I can't wait to see what the author writes next!
This is a really great start by a debut author. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this author will keep writing in this world because I really loved the classic romance feel to this book!
There is a lot to love in this book and the main characters were everyday people, working and making a living. They have wounds and baggage as we all do by the time we’ve reached our late 20s early 30s. The best part of the story is CJ and Colette’s relationship, it’s a sweet one, but there are ups and downs. The romance is very hot with these two and those scenes make sense where they happen.
Bottom line, yes, I will read this author again!
Some areas I would’ve loved a little more was more interaction with CJ and CJ’s brothers, especially since we’ll possibly be getting books about them (?), I would have loved CJ’s family, particularly his parents to have had a conversation about their marriage a lot earlier than it happened. As a parent of an adult child, if I had the opportunity I would want to speak with them immediately, so that things wouldn’t be strained while they visited and clearly CJ and his Dad have a strained relationship! I want more from this author and this world but I don’t have strong feelings about which character I want next; that almost never happens! The other area I would have loved a tiny bit more is Colette’s involvement in the local theater, assuming it’s summer and there would be kids taking theater camp, I would have loved to see her in action at the theater! Ending with my feelings about the epilogue! It was amazing!
Colette was heartbroken when the director announced that their small community theater might not survive to next season. Elizabeth had been the one to suggest a black-tie event fundraiser since as an event planner she had a lot of experience. But, not only does Elizabeth decide to elope and dump the whole thing in her lap, she has done NOTHING in the last few weeks for this event.
She decides that instead of going off on Elizabeth's morning text she'll pick up coffee and breakfast at her favorite coffee shop and head to her boyfriend's. Only to arrive and hear groaning, wall banging, and skin slapping against skin. It's too early to deal with this sh!t.
Connor, CJ, is a contract lawyer working for his dad's firm and he has had to work overtime to prove he earned his job and not because of his last name. As soon as he arrives in the office he is given a fifteen minute warning that one of the partners wants to meet with him. He is wracking his brain trying to figure out why.
They want him to move to the Baltimore office for the summer to run their mentor program. Now he understood his mother's cryptic text message this morning about him being home and he would be receiving a call to be the commencement guest speaker for graduation next week. He's been gone for a decade and had no plans on going back, but since his goal is to make partner he has no choice in the matter.
I loved this book. It draws you in from the beginning of the book. The characters are all well developed and the storyline is everything you could ask for...betrayal, great friendships, family, heartbreak, suspense, and amazing sex.
I loved Colette. She has a vulnerability and will do anything for those she loves. CJ has deep seated daddy issues that have led him to be a workaholic with no social life. I love how Colette and CJ's lives bring them together from San Francisco to Baltimore.
I highly recommend this book and Gemma Smith. I am looking forward to what this new author comes out with next. I was even able to add to my TBR list with the help of Colette's Kindle reading LOL.
WOW! Just.... WOW Gemma Smith! I'm speechless and the happiest person in the world because of YOU! ❤ Take The Risk is the first novel of Gemma Smith. I got the chance to read an ARC of this wonderful book and I'm so thankful.
Colette sacrificed herself for her family and friends. She's careful about risking things and doesn't know how to appreciate beautiful things without doubting it'll last longer. But then CJ comes back into town to help in a mentoring program of his dad's firm and Colette gets the chance to spend time with CJ again. They know each other from the last so.... Will they be able to Take The Risk and see where it'll take them? READ THIS BOOK TO FIND OUT!
Well I've to admit I didn't expect that this book will touch my soul so damn deep. I... I loved the beautiful love story of Colette and CJ! It was sooooo intense! Emotionally and mentally! It inspired me so much because I saw a few similarities between Colette and me... and I guess it's really good to take the risk one time or two times... it can be good! Not everything has to be bad! Everyone deserves happiness and Colette deserved it more than anyone! I felt with her so much! Also CJ deserved it! He's a pure workaholic and didn't really live his life until he met Colette again. OMG they're so perfect for each other and it was just soooo wonderful to experience their story. They have to deal with a lot and there were things I didn't expect to happen! So to make a long story short: Take The Risk is a brilliant love story full of emotions and emotions and emotions and loooove and friendship and happiness and a bit of suspense and some more emotions! I really really really really really loved this book with every piece of my heart! And now that I finished it I'm sitting here and crying happy tears... Oh! And I loved the epilogue and the bonus epilogue too! Made me even cry some more. ❤ Thank you so much Gemma Smith! Please keep writing!I can't wait for more!
This is a debut book by a brand new author and it starts off a bit slow but it picks up around 20% and I fell in love with this story and the town and the characters. I would love to read more about the Montgomery Brothers especially Nathan and Margot.
This story centers around Colette/Lettie and CJ. Both grew up in a small town in Baltimore and were good friends. They were family friends and Colette's cousin Margot dated CJ's older brother Nathan. They also both crushed on each other but they only shared one kiss on the night of their high school graduation.
CJ grew up with a terrible father and a wonderful mother and two older brother. His father never showed up at his graduation. He was so hurt that he left town the night of his graduation and headed to California where he swore never to return. That is until his boss forces him to come home and work on a program for new lawyers in the Baltimore office.
When he gets to town he finds Colette, who is just out of a relationship with her ex and the two take up their friendship. But the ex causes some drama and CJ has some daddy issues and he still can't wait to finish his assignment and go home.
This was a wonderful story and I think its because I adored Colette and I loved how CJ is with her. They have some really fun dates and I adored her relationship with her friends and cousin and CJ's family.
There is a bit of a mystery and suspense relating to Lettie's ex and what he was up to. I felt that this angle of the story was not explored enough and I was left with many questions.
This was a great romance and I was happy to watch CJ and Colette falling for each other and get their second chance at love and more with each other. The author did a great job exploring CJ and Colette's family issues but I would have liked more info about what the ex was up to.
I received a complimentary early release copy of this e-book from the author prior to release and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Take the Risk, Gemma Smith’s debut, is a second chance, contemporary romance. Take the Risk is beautifully written and for a debut it is amazing and does not feel like a debut. Told in first person dual point of view this story follows Colette Dubois and Conner “CJ” Jasper Montgomery. CJ returns to Baltimore after living on the west coast for ten years. He is a classic workaholic ambitious lawyer and doesn’t have a life outside of work. His return to Baltimore is forced. CJ meets Colette, a music teacher and former Broadway actress, when he speaks as the guest speaker at his high school’s commencement ceremony. The attraction is instant and both of their teenage crushes return. As he spends more time with Colette, he realizes how much he has missed with his family and reconsiders his life goals. Colette has had to readjust her life’s goals after the loss of her mother, working through her grief as well as not being able to pursue her dreams. Being with CJ is a risk for her but he’s someone she’s willing to take the risk for.
I enjoyed this debut so much! It was a fairly quick read as I was engaged throughout the book. CJ and Colette were lovable and relatable characters and I enjoyed the way their relationship developed and their connection. Colette’s character was strong and her ability to adjust when things got tough was inspiring. CJ’s relationship with his family, specifically his father, played a big role in his life and actions. This is the story of two flawed people willing to take the risk and love each other. I loved the lessons Gemma has included in this book and the way this book was framed. There was some mystery that added to the overall plot of the book and I loved that it didn’t take away from the overall premise of the book.
Take the Risk is a beautiful love story that had me hooked from the beginning and I felt ALL the emotions! I’m looking forward to the other Montgomery brothers' books.
I received an ARC but purchased my own copy also. I am voluntarily leaving a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Conner “CJ” Montgomery was determined to become the youngest partner in his law firm. He had left Baltimore once he graduated and had not returned for ten years. He was so focused on his work that he had no personal life and he had distanced himself from all his family and friends. He reluctantly returns to Baltimore for the summer when his boss puts him in charge of the new mentorship project. Colette Dubois had moved back to Baltimore after discovering her mother had cancer. After her mother passes away, she loses herself in grief, and working at the community theater held her together. Now the theater is close to being shut down unless they can get enough donations to keep it open. Can they have a future together and reach their individual goals? This was the author’s debut novel and I found it to be a light romance to read. There were some grammatical errors but not enough to be frustrating. The characters were interesting but hard to connect with. I found Collette to be self-centered and annoying with her “the universe would not let her be happy.” It became a little tedious reading it after every interaction between Collette and CJ. I found CJ to be pleasant until I reached the end of the book where he and his boss interact. It was heart-warming to hear CJ’s father apologize for his failure in the past and see them working to improving their relationship. Seeing CJ’s perspective of Baltimore and his family change was wonderful. He was able to overcome his demons and find happiness.
In high school we were all so raw - even if we didn't know it. Hormones were high, self-discovery was ping-ponging us all over the place and we never realized how fast time was flying. Gemma Smith's first novel lets us re-live the loved and lost or what-ifs of our own through CJ and Colette with such skill that she lets us immerse ourselves without feeling self-conscious.
Take The Risk is beautifully balanced with the sub-plots weaving together with the main arc of CJ and Colette reconnecting and there is no diversion. Her struggles with her theatre space, his demanding career path and family dynamic ground the characters solidly into three dimensions, and their struggles bring them fully alive in the pages. Gemma doesn't use artifice to make us feel, her writing is deceptively enjoyable as to make her prose seem effortless but I'm sure she chose very carefully what she put onto the page to ensure her reader would have an enjoyable experience. Oh, and none of the above takes away from the hottness of this couple and their coupling. Steamy HOT! Can't wait to read her next one! Do yourself a favor and take Take The Risk anywhere you're going this summer!
Connor "CJ" and Colette story is the classic story of I should have said something story. Two people having a crush on each other and no one ready to say something. Ten years later the paths cross again and intertwine in way non of them had been able to contemplate. It was hard to get in to the characters at the beginning and it took a while to understands chapters it was, but halfway thought the book i couldn't put it down wanting to know how it all play out. I've read the Reviews, mentioning the whole thing about Colette and the universes is having out for me annoyed them, and yet grief of losing a love one is messing with you head, heart and the outlook on life. It take a long time to figure out to deal with this and yes insecurity have a way of questioning everything. Connor on the other hand was the opposite. The father rejection made him close of to everything emotional or his home. And yet with one right poke to you soul everything is able to shatter all the chains link around to not feel.
Gemma Smith portrait this beautiful and I cant wait to read more form her.
I received a free copy of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
Colette has readjusted her life from the dreams she had. She’s back home instead of living her dream on broadway but she is surrounded by amazing friends and an incredible support team.
CJ is a lawyer living in San Francisco but is sent back home to spend the summer in their Baltimore office to head a mentorship program. He hasn’t been back home since he left after high school and things have changed which he needs to reassess his perspectives on.
These two both had a crush on each other in high school but never expressed their feelings for each other. So them coming together is so smooth and natural. These old feelings instantly blossom when they are reacquainted.
I loved the community that surrounded these two. Everything felt natural and easy flowing. They were so adorable and sweet with each other and were exactly what the other needed at this point in their lives.
I can’t wait to see what’s in store for Nathan and Margot in Never Stopped Loving You.
For Ms. Smith’s first novel she knocks it out of the park. The pacing was excellent, not a whole lot of angst, and a little mystery thrown in for a thrill.
Reading about CJ and Colette’s reunion was exciting. CJ has a goal and Colette had to readjust hers. Both have been through quite a bit since high school but once they saw each other again, the spark was still there.
Let me tell you, after reading the end of chapter one I was just praying that Colette ended up happy. You forget that this story takes place within a matter of months. The chemistry between CJ and Colette is off the charts and we as the reader are not the only ones who feel it or “see” it. Everyone in their lives can feel how much these two are into and good for each other.
I loved all the characters and the world that Gemma created here. I really hope we get a Margot/Nathan book. Seems like a lot of history to reveal there.
This book was so refreshing. I haven’t read a contemporary romance novel in a while and this one was just what I needed. CJ and Colette were so refreshing and true to life. I love how Cj came home and realized that being gone for ten years can change how you see everyone and everything. To finding a new relationship with his brothers to realizing his Dad isn’t the man he was when CJ left to go to San Francisco. Colette was just what he needed in his life to make him realize what he didn’t have and what he wanted. They both gave each other the one thing they were both missing each other. To the first time he seen her in the hallway at the Graduation ceremony and all the feelings it brought back. He may not have wanted to come back to Maryland but it was where he was meant to be. I was so happy that when his dad came to see him in San Francisco he understood dreams can change and be adjusted. I was heartbroken for Collette when he left but so damn happy when he came back for her.
I can't believe this is Gemma's debut novel! She did such a great job in all aspects that it's hard to comprehend that this was indeed her first novel.
CJ and Colette are seriously the cutest in the adorable slow burn, second chance, friends to lovers story. Colette protects her heart and needs to learn to take those risks in order to reach her true happiness. She has fears and heartbreak she is healing from and the growth she goes through after such loss is truly inspiring. CJ is a sexy workaholic who things he needs to work his life away in order to be anything like his father. He has some family issues and believes he's ingrained in his own mind to work through before he too gets his happiness.
I was in happy tears the last 15% of the book and it made any frustrations I had with the slow burn and would they just get their heads and hearts in line already so they can have their HEA worth it!
Amazing job! I can't wait for the rest of the Montgomery boys' stories.
POV: Dual (1st Person) Tropes: Friends-To-Lovers, Second Chance Triggers: None
Likes: The characters were so beautifully written, you can’t help but feel their emotions as you read! Plus super steamy at times too!
Dislikes: I would have liked a tiny bit more drama!
Synopsis: Take The Risk follows Conner “CJ” Montgomery who's back in his hometown for his boss’s mentorship program, and Broadway actress, turned local teacher Colette. They were childhood friends who harboured secret crushes on one another, and now they’re back in the same town again, those feelings start to resurface. Will either take the risk and get their much deserved happily ever after? A great debut novel, full of all the feels and steam!
Oh. My. Goodness. Truly a breath-taking five-star read. You won't want to miss one moment of this fantastic friends to lovers romance. Take the Risk has combustible chemistry, sexual tension, and angst, all paired with so much shared history that you can feel the depth of the relationship. I felt all of Colette & CJ’s emotions; the happiness, the heartache, the fear and excitement, the longing and their love for each other. It is hard to believe this is Gemma Smith’s debut novel. IT’S. THAT. DAMN. GOOD. This book is not to be missed! I can't say enough good things about it...just read it!! I’m looking forward to reading Nathan’s & David’s books!!!
CJ and Colette had a crush on each other in high school which neither of them acknowledged or acted on but will they be able to resist when they are both back in their hometown at the same time?! I really loved the easy relationship between CJ and Colette, right from when he first arrived back in town. I loved how close Colette was to CJs family without him knowing it and how she could bring a different perspective to his relationship with them to help bridge the gap. I also loved that there wasn't any game playing, even when their relationship was undetermined!! Great debut from Gemma!
This was Gemma Smiths’ debut novel. Reading it, you wouldn’t know that.
I love when a book hooks me from the beginning. I didn’t need to pause, read something else, & then come back. I opened it at night and stayed up to finish it. It was a pretty quick read for me. About 3ish hours since I was able to read without distractions and getting up for snacks(everybody needs repeated snack breaks right?).
This was a friends to lovers. It wasn’t really an “instalove” in my opinion, but they definitely had strong feelings for each other that grew
This is one story you want to one click as soon as possible. I am a sucker for characters and stories you can immerse yourself in and this author nailed it. I loved how CJ and Collette clicked. Their chemistry made this story so much better. Even with their flaws, you can see their passion and need for one another to push them in the right directions. I loved this and will be recommending this to everyone.
My girl Brittni told me I needed to read this author's debut novel... Let me tell you I enjoyed every minute of this journey. I think you would be pleasantly surprised that it's her first novel.
It's a book about a second chance, seeing the beauty in today, and not regretting your choices. CJ and Colette were friends in high school, with secret crushes on the other. This book picks up about 10 years after they have last seen each other, and that chemistry that was just starting. Time didn't dull that budding attraction, it only enhanced it. Colette is a wonderful heroine who did something many of us would do if someone close needed us, but she sees the beauty in it. CJ has tried so hard to carve his own path but lost the beauty in life along the way. The unexpected relationship that springs between them, is a shock, but something special to witness.
This was a big foundation story, setting up a world we'll get to explore with CJ's brothers. And I can't wait!!
I really enjoyed that and I'm looking forward to more books from this series. I felt a connection to the characters and I was a huge fan of CJ he was my kind of broody man who was never hateful and never an a-hole. I loved that Colette was never one to run and cry and be dramatic she held her head up smiled until she was alone or in the arms of her friends. I stayed up way late to finish it and truly enjoyed it!!
So so good. I love a good friend to lovers. And the two have such a cute connection you are just rooting for them to be more. But I like to see the family dynamic with its issues having an effect on where and what CJ did with his life. He filled it with work and nothing more causing him to become like his dad and in the end having to choose to adjust and pivot or loose a good thing. And always love good strong friendships and love that Colette has that. So worth reading!!
Colette and CJ were a great read. You have a struggling guy trying to be his own person away from family and friends, who comes back and reconnects with his old friend. The sparks are instant, the struggles each are facing are relatable which really helps connect you to the characters. I'm always hesitant with Debut novels, but Gemma knocks this one out of the park and easily makes herself one of my must read author list!
