AWARD WINNER - 2020's BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR, INDIESTODAY.COM
At the age of 24, Jordan Barnes woke up next to a lifeless body, rifled through his dead friend's pockets for any remaining heroin and went right back to using.
Strung out and homeless during the supposed best years of his life, there was no clear way out of the Opioid Crisis ravaging the streets of Portland, Oregon. But though Jordan had long accepted his fate, his parents still held out hope, and would do everything in their power to get him the help he so desperately needed.
After a harrowing journey that proves the life of an active addict will always get worse, never better, Jordan found himself at the gates of Sand Island, Hawaii’s most notorious two-year inpatient treatment facility. He soon discovers that though his heart was in the right place, the hardest battle of his life was yet to come.
One Hit Away is his arduous and unlikely true story of recovery, rehabilitation and redemption.
Jordan P. Barnes is a grateful alcoholic & addict in recovery and Sand Island Treatment Center is his home group. When he’s not sharing his experience, strength and hope through writing or talking story, he enjoys bodysurfing and gardening. Residing in beautiful Kailua, Hawaiʻi with his lovely wife Chelsea and two sons, Jordan has been sober from all mind and mood-altering substances since August 29th, 2011. Jordan is a member of the Hawaiʻi Writers’ Guild and his debut book, One Hit Away: A Memoir of Recovery won 2020’s “Best Book of the Year” award from www.IndiesToday.com, was a B.R.A.G. Medallion Honoree as well as a finalist in both the 15th Annual National Indie Excellence Awards and the 2021 Independent Author Network Book of the Year Awards.
Visceral, honest and inspiring. The author makes his journey through recovery accessible to all readers, whether or not they have personally passed through similar experiences. I appreciated that the book focused on the author's progress toward getting clean, so that the few times when he recounts his earlier experiences are hard-hitting without becoming over-whelming. Sometimes I had trouble following the timeline of events, but that is a minor criticism.
Disclaimer: This book was won in a Goodreads giveaway. This is my honest and voluntary review.
Jordan Barnes has written a harrowing tale of his days of addiction in the streets of Portland, Oregon (where I live) and his ensuing intensive treatment in Hawaii (where my mom was born.) This memoir held my interest throughout. I was a little disappointed that Barnes disparaged medication assisted treatment because it, too, saves lives but acknowledge that his experience was his alone and he is entitled to his opinion. This book is very focused on twelve step treatment as that is what worked for Mr. Barnes.
One Hit Away is an amazing window into the body, mind and soul of an addict. I read this book through an advanced copy of a Kindle edition and it did not disappoint! It is a very personal account of heroin and cocaine addiction and it details very candidly the physical pain and the emotional struggles of addiction. It does not sugar coat illicit drug use in any way. The book also details not only addiction but the physical and psychological struggles of detoxing and the hard work needed to successfully get through a rehabilitation program. As a parent I could relate to Jordan’s own parents who were both very loving, kind and supportive but had to force themselves to wait until Jordan asked for the help he so desperately needed. I was able to grasp how truly painful withdraw can be and without medical assistance and a strong support system how devastating the consequences can be. I found myself laughing at times and crying but always rooting for Jordan to overcome this deadly disease! One Hit Away is a wonderful debut memoir!
Incredible story. Brutally honest, gritty, and yet so well told and gripping that I couldn’t put it down until I’d finished the book. Even though this memoir is at times heartbreaking, the author’s bravery is inspiring and the book as a whole left me with an overall feeling of...I’m not sure what, exactly, but a good feeling. Hope, maybe. Peace. Gratitude. This was an accidental find- not my usual genre- and I’m SO GLAD I read it.
One of my all time favorite memoirs is Scar Tissue by Anthony Kiedis. But of course, that book has been written and discussed many times before because not only is Anthony a recovering addict, he’s….Anthony Kiedis.
One Hit Away by Jordan P Barnes is similar to Scar Tissue as it deals with a man struggling with addiction, except this is just a man. A man who sleeps on the streets of Portland. A man who struggled with addiction for most of his life. A man who entered into the dark world of heroin in college. A man who had a family and community praying for his recovery the entire time.
Jordan was 24 years old when he woke up next to the dead body of his drug friend Simon. Despite his own hesitation, he found himself rifling through his friends pockets for any remaining drugs. Jordan write this book with an open heart and no filter. He is honest about his inner turmoil during this period of his life - knowing that he couldn’t do this forever and knowing that there had to be a way out. The entire time Jordan was struggling, his family was looking for him, praying for him, hoping they could find him. A series of chance encounters leads to seeing his parents at a jailhouse and then later, knowing that help was just a phone call home.
The story follows Jordan through recovery at Sand Island, an inpatient treatment center in Hawaii. Yes, yes, it’s Hawaii, but this wasn’t about laying on a beach and getting a tan. Jordan discussed the pain and struggle of recovery and work that is involved. There is no sugar coating. It’s work and it’s hard.
I felt for Jordan the entire time I was reading. It pained me to see him struggle, I felt the cold ground that he slept on, I felt his heart break when he saw his parents. I cheered him on with each success.
I received a copy of this book from Jordan himself, but that in no way influenced my review. Jordan is a talented writer and I hope that his story reaches everyone. Addiction touches everyone in some way, and this is one man’s story of hope.
This Book. Man, was this an emotional read. Thank you, Jordan for being so open and honest and giving details of your life you have never shared before. This could not have been easy, but this book shows how the dedication and support of your parents truly changed your life. I cannot imagine if you would be alive without their love, care, and gentle nudges in the right directions.
I have known Jordan for 4 years and was given an advanced reader copy to review. I can 100% say that the characters that I know are portrayed accurately throughout this book. I knew some of Jordan's past, but here he lays it all out in the open. While so many people struggle with addiction and so many do not get out of the cycle, Jordan's journey is truly inspiring.
This book will be hard for anyone with addiction with no support system to read, as that is a strong theme throughout. However, while Jordan had the support of his family to get clean, he made the decision to go to treatment, stay, get clean, and chooses to stay clean every day. I recommend this story to anyone who wants to understand more about addiction, wants a first-hand account of recovery, or who wants to read a story of triumph over an evil hold.
Thank you so much for sharing your story, Jordan. I hope you are able to positively impact other addicts, their families, and their friends.
One Hit Away by Jordan Barnes is a riveting read. Barnes digs deep into his life with drug addiction with all its murky details. He tells you his deepest darkest secrets, with a candid honesty that only someone who has sunk so low that he has lost all inhibition can tell. Barnes takes you to the streets that you can only hope you never travel. If you have walked in his shoes, you know what he talks of, and perhaps this book can give you some solace. Parents who have watched helplessly as a child slips away from them will relate to Barnes’s family and the highs and lows they go through. This book is for everyone. It’s a story that is playing out on streets and in cities across America. Turning away won’t make it go away. Everyday, men and women struggle to survive with addiction. They are our friends, relatives, and our fellow human beings. We are all connected. And we are all just one hit away.
This book tho! I had the opportunity to read this before publishing and I enjoyed it so much. His writing is beautiful and I now want to visit Hawaii after reading about the culture and vivid physical descriptions of the Island.
Addiction touches so many lives and has been such a taboo subject, but I feel this book blows the secrecy out of the water and leaves you with an understanding you wouldn’t otherwise comprehend. Jordan gives you a front row seat in the mind and making of an addict and leaves no stone unturned sharing the ripple effect in every aspect of his life. So many of us pray for the miracle he so openly shared between these pages. If you have ever been touched by addiction, I strongly suggest reading this book. Thank you for the hope Jordan.
This book is a must read for everyone. Jordan provides a personal insight into the realities and grip of addiction, as well as the strength and obstacles faced in the pursuit of sobriety. In addition to the powerful theme of the memoir, the writing is detailed and emotional, providing descriptions of the other people involved and the environments surrounding him. I found myself cheering on Jordan, crying, and smiling throughout various points of reading. I can't wait until the release to share with everyone. This memoir is a powerful reminder that you truly never know the details of what some people have gone through, and the work they have put in to get where they are today. I know this book can be a valuable tool for so many people.
Based on me crying about 10 times but also laughing out loud about half that while reading this book, it is obvious to me that Jordan's wit, humor, and honesty shine through on this raw look into his personal story of the incredibly complex and diverse topic of addiction.
Jordan does a great job of humanizing and personalizing his struggle with the natural flow of a much more established author.
I would recommend this book to anyone affected by addition, be it personal or a loved one.
What a great book! It flows naturally and gives a unique insight on recovery with an amazing Ohana support system. Very pleased I took the time to read this.
Holy moly. What a story. An incredible, unflinching look at the life of an addict through addiction and recovery. Thank you Goodreads, publisher and author for my free kindle copy.
We are proud to announce that ONE HIT AWAY: A Memoir of Recovery by Jordan P. Barnes is a B.R.A.G.Medallion Honoree. This tells readers that this book is well worth their time and money!
The title of this book really suited it and opened my eyes to this gripping addiction. Jordan describes his heroin addiction journey and digs deep to relive the highest and lowest points of it. His honest retelling reveals his selfish and immature responses to what life throws at him. Because of his honesty and belief in God, I felt myself routing for him and his ability to shake that monkey off his back. His writing entices you to read on so it didn't take long to finish this book in a few sittings.
I love reading recovery memoirs, but I always feel like something is missing. This book has that thing that is missing - real recovery! I was able to relate to it so much, especially the parts about the treatment center, meetings, and the 12 steps. I absolutely loved this book and would highly recommend it to everyone, whether you are in recovery or not.
One Hit Away was a very personal read for me and an eye opening look into the world of drug addiction and the battles that some of our friends and family face.
A few months ago, I was asked by Jordan Barnes to read this memoir of recovery and provide a short commendation for it. At the time I don't think I was fully prepared or even understood what I was about to read or the impression it would leave me with.
To be honest, I procrastinated. I put it off several times...but then when I finally started reading it, I had to finish it. The first chapter grabs you and sucks you into a world of what I would call...horror. Not the kind that you see in the movies, but the horror of drug abuse and the seemingly impossible power that drug addiction holds over you. What followed was a long road to recovery and redemption that was traumatic, moving, and so very personal.
What made it personal was that Jordan is the author and the person who went through these struggles. Here's someone who has personally asked me to read about his struggles and then comment on them afterwards. The connection made it immensely powerful. The ending is poignant and triumphant while still managing to break your heart.
I believe that this book shines a light on what many of the crimes we experience in Stolen Stuff Hawaii are driven by. The reasons our family members and our friends become lost and can't find their way back. The reason why it is so hard to find the light and so hard to hold onto it.
This book makes me want to fight for more rehabilitation services for those who need it. It makes me want to increase the availability of such services in our jails and prisons. And it also makes it apparent that releasing inmates to a world where these services are not provided is essentially setting them up for fail...something we're experiencing in vast quantities in today's coronavirus climate.
Jordan has fought through hell to get to this stage in his life. A former drug addict who has worked so very hard to overcome the demons in his life and is now a local, productive member of society, a soon to be father, and a survivor.
I wish him the best in the release of his book and I'd like to thank Jordan for the opportunity to leave a note in his book as well as the privilege of reading it before release. I wish him great success in its release.
Full disclosure; my name is Jeri Barnes. I am Jordan’s mother. Jordan’s story was painful in real time and just as difficult when relived the second time through his book. If you are a parent, you don’t need this book to remind you of the unrelenting stress, the embarrassment, shame, disbelief, anger, unbearable grief, sadness and overwhelming feelings that the addict child will bring upon you. You know the anger and sadness of watching an addict spiral out of control to inconceivable lows. You know the unfathomable anguish. What you don’t know is what the addict is experiencing, what they are thinking, and how the lure of addiction turns into a dark pathway to hell. Through this book I relived a most painful part of mine and my family's lives through the eyes of our son. I find forgiveness for whatever imagined role we played or thought we played and take pride in his climb from the depths of hell to salvation. My husband and I are forever grateful for the role God played in bringing him home and for the selfless support and effort by the members of the Sand Island treatment facility in showing him the way to sobriety. This is his story of that climb. We have a deep faith in God and know that angels played a pivotal role enabling us to find Jordan in his lost world. It was a miraculous journey that brought him home. Jordan has an urgency to share his powerful and truthful story. It is one of sadness and insight into the selfishness, betrayal, cunningness, entitlement and, finally, finding the right path through forgiveness, happiness and unimaginable achievement. It is a story of hope.
I listened to this on Audible but ended up buying a hard copy for my clients! I am in recovery and have read many biographies and autobiographies of people in recovery. I have to say, Jordan's story is one of the most moving, powerful stories I've ever had the privilege to read. There are so many wonderful elements to this story: the depths of dispair and where addiction can take you, the never-ending hope of family, the necessary detaching with love that his family displays, the truth about uncertainty when you begin treatment, the powerful moment of finding a higher power...I could go on and on. I have purchased a copy of this book to loan to my clients at the treatment facility that I supervise and they, too, are being blessed by it. Mahalo for your openness, vulnerability, and honesty. Your truth has and will help many.
Barnes' beautifully written memoir takes one by the hand and invites them into the hell of addiction - the suffocation, the trap, and the never-ending fear that one is doomed. His story is honest, raw, and tugs at the heart. Most importantly, he delivers a story of hope - that even the worst addict, if they want help and persevere one day, one hour at a time, happiness can be found. Kudos to Jordan Barnes for profound service through his beautiful words. If you really want a reality check on the life of an addict, this is the book. Strongly recommend.
I was lucky to receive an ARC and thoroughly enjoyed the true to life story of the authors ups and downs. Very inspirational and an absolutely amazing read. Jordan has a way with words that keeps you encased in the story, and wanting to read more. To be able to see his hard work not only in his writing, but in his determination for a better life, all the while remembering where he came from is an amazing feat. Would highly recommend any and all to read.
Incredibly well written! The author painted a vivid picture of what his journey was truly like, minute by Minute. I was amazed how detailed he was considering the stress of going from a drug hazed life through the journey to a Full Recovery! Amazing Job Jordan!!!
Jordan (the author) has a great way with his words, and I enjoyed his writing style. I am sure this memoir could serve as a great tool for someone early in recovery. Or even someone later on in their recovery. I am deducting a star only because I needed more back story. Jordan mainly wrote about the aftermath and journey of his recovery. He didn't really touch much on his before that led him to the recovery. I gravitate more towards memoirs that give the reader more details on the before. I understand that may be hard for someone in recovery to revisit and write all out, however. I see Jordan has written more, so I very well may have to look into his other works.
It’s somewhat of a paradox to be unable to put a book down and yet not wish it to end. Jordan’s book was like that for me. His miraculous journey from rock bottom to vibrant health had me rooting for him while at the same time holding my breath. Truly, as the author shows, addiction knows no socioeconomic, racial, religious, age, or geographic boundaries. It is not necessarily the result of a broken or unhappy home. Jordan’s story makes it clear that none are without hope. This gripping account of one man descending into the very depths of addiction will make you not want to give up on anyone, no matter how lost they seem. Shared with brutal honesty from the heart. A book about love, hope, extreme courage, and healing.
I started this book on a quiet morning and was quickly swept away into a story so rich and detailed that I couldn’t put it down. I ended up reading it cover to cover that day!
It was refreshing to read a memoir that focuses on recovery and doesn’t obsess about the tribulations of addiction. It’s amazing to read a memoir about someone who doesn’t identify as a victim.
This book is not something that I would normally read but I am glad I did. I won this on goodreads. It was fascinating to read about the struggle to get off drugs. The things he went through and that his family went through for years is awful and they stood by him through it all.
