Ren has established a guild for himself and three beautiful girls, one of them being Akira, his gamer friend from middle school. Just as they’re about to get things up and running, another one of his gamer friends drops a bomb on she, Yukino Yamamura, is an upperclassman at their very same school! Yukino, an avid lover of PvP combat, invites Ren and Akira to join a battle tournament hosted by her guild, Mystic Arts. “Let’s do this thing, Ren!” “Yeah! Three... two... one...!” “Go!” Even against throngs of powerful foes, Ren’s advance never ends!
With 10+ less pages, 2 less chapters, this second volume of a VRMMORPG (Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) isekai-fantasy (playing a game in another world) novel series telegraphs everything too much. Main character has a one shot skill to defeat stronger opponents. Akira his best game-friend is a sword dancer, in the second volume, this group grows from four to six, adding Akabane (another sword dancer) and Yukino a magic knight that doubles what Yuuna's paladin player already does. Because main character's strategies and defeating of "Boss Level Monsters", he gains a familiar, a small dragon, that they name Draco. Again everything is too cliché, too typical, telegraphed, even the names are expected. Is a story still good if it fits and matches all expectations? Or does it lack "originality", "mystery" and "change from the norm"? Although main characters go to a "game school" author just focuses on the game. Other than the moment where main character, Ren, gets little familiar dragon, Draco, main characters are always within the game.
Much like volume 1 it is a light-hearted slice-of-life gaming story in which the MC deals with his opponents by using the right powers and items and the right time. In this book mostly in a one-on-one tournament. The game mechanics are decent, even if it is unlikely a game like this would ever be designed, in regard to PvP duels anyway. It suffers from the same features as the first volume: slice-of-life, simple conversations, fan service and somewhat wish fulfilment interaction between the MC and (too many) girls. It is just that I am not a fan of a tournament arc, calling it a freshman tournament and letting everybody join (with level caps) and the break item vs. ridiculous gotcha luck just were a bit too much for my tolerance of the other features. A decently entertaining read, but only if you don't mind the features.
I was really looking forward to this book for awhile after I finished book one and it was such an enjoyable read. My only complaint is that it felt very short and not much happened. I can't wait for for book 3!
