Lily Monroe didn’t intend to break the law. Her troublesome ways began the day she was pulled through a portal into an alternate dimension of Earth. A realm inhabited by mythological creatures and humans with supernatural powers. At first, Lily yearned to go back home, a place comfortable yet intolerable. But she changed her mind when she fell into the company of a copper-haired centaur named Blaze.
A dreamy girl, Lily longed for adventure that was beyond her reach. All of that changes the second Lily finds herself in Realm. She discovers this world is home to a family she never knew existed, that her father is trapped, and that her brother, Dmitry, needs her assistance in order to free him. Hesitantly, Lily agrees to help and sets off on a journey full of perilous tasks that are more daring than she had wished for.
Befriended by her brother’s team, Lily realizes she must trust them and their assortment of powers while learning to control her own to survive. Between establishing new friendships and battling legendary beasts, Lily feels a sense of belonging. Unfortunately, her happily-ever-after is cut short the second they free her father.

I came across this book on Instagram and the cover caught me. It was a fun little adventure mixing our world with a parallel realm filled with every imaginable legend you can imagine. Travel with Lily as learns who she really is and started to understand secrets her family obviously hid from her. Looking forward to the 2nd book.
A magical mix of mythology and reality. Step by step we are taken between two parallel worlds, Earth and Realm, on a journey of discovery with Lily, who is beginning to learn who she really is, and why she has been forced to go an adventure. On Earth, Lily lives with her uncle. She never knew her father, and her mother is institutionalised in a care home. One day after a run in with some strangers, she is suddenly thrown through a portal into an alternative reality. Here she befriends Blaze, a centaur, and soon she encounters a brother and a family that she never knew, before they all set off on an journey to find her father. With a dash of romance in the mix, the author has created a lovely group of characters to follow on this entertaining adventure. I look forward to part 2.
The Adventures of Lily Monroe, REALM, Book One by Jessica Cantwell
Would you like to go down a rabbit hole into a brand new Wonderland? Then this smart, imaginative and mind-altering read is the one for you. This is a romp, an adventure, a journey and a full-blown experience. Ms. Cantwell’s style is contemporary, urban, witty and intelligent. But her imagination is as large as all our well-loved fantasy classics and mythology rolled into one. It reads with an urgency that keeps you in the moment, right along with Lily Monroe on her surprising adventures; and it draws upon all those layers of nostalgia we fantasy lovers have for the fantasies that are dear to our hearts. It is great fun, with a blend of humor, danger and novelty, all well-balanced throughout.
Lily thinks she has an ordinary life. But as soon as the author introduces her to us, we know she is different. Intelligent and sensitive, she has always been a bit of a loner. As a child, she had an “invisible friend. As a teen, Lily willing cared for her ill grandma, who she loved dearly, every day, when she came home from school. Her mom, a psychologist, has founded a successful treatment center for people suffering from mental distress or mental illness and is a natural empath. Then after the death of Lily’s Grandma, Lily’s mom slips into a kind of mental disarray and voluntarily admits herself to her own clinic.
Lily lives with her grandpa, Mac. He’s 75, but he is very strong, kind, and doesn’t look a day over 55. We don’t know where her dad is. Lily, who can’t quite find herself after graduating high school, works at her mom’s treatment center and spends time with her mom every day. She dreams of adventure, but clings to her routine of work and visiting with her mom. Her mom often has bad days and can become agitated, and early in the story her mom becomes worried about two men who she feels are following Lily. Indeed, two extraordinarily handsome men make an appearance shortly afterwards and seem to be following her. So Lily’s ordinary life is actually fairly complex on an emotional level.
Lily’s only friend, Sonny, who works at her mom’s center and is a few years older, encourages Lily to go out with her to a bar. She wants to show Lily something at this very particular place. This is all a bit out of Lily’s comfort zone, but she agrees. On her night out with Sonny, Lily’s life changes forever. The two handsome and intriguing men are at the bar. One is called Dmitry. Then in a surreal scene, Sonny transforms, shape shifts and becomes the other man, Tracy. There is an argument between the men and then Dmitry takes hold of Lily and she is pulled through a portal into another world: REALM.
Lily is alone on her arrival, Tracy (Sonny) and Dmitry, are nowhere in sight. Her first contact is with a dazzlingly handsome, copper-haired centaur called Blaze. Blaze will teach her and become a friend. Lily learns that REALM is a world filled with mythological creatures and humans with amazing powers. In fact, REALM is the world she really comes from. It is an alternative dimension to earth. Dmitry is actually her brother! In fact, their father, Lily’s real father, is imprisoned and Dmitry needs her help to free him. There are battles to be had with legendary beasts and Lily’s own powers begin to emerge and need to be controlled. The ending begs for the second book. Fortunately it is written, published and waiting to be read.
**I received a free copy of this book courtesy of the author, but I also purchased a copy of my own. My review is in no way affected by receiving a copy as a gift; this is an honest, spoiler-free review.**
Lily Monroe goes out to a club with a friend in an attempt at just one 'normal' evening of fun... What she gets is an entirely new world full of danger, secrets, and lies.
Lily is a normal young woman struggling with the burdens of a mundane job, a mother with lapsing mental health, and no end in sight. A mysterious shape-shifter and man with the power of incredible speed showing up in the shadows change everything, by dragging her through a portal into a parallel dimension: Realm.
Realm mirrors Earth in every way. Treasures and landmarks "destroyed" or "lost" on Earth appear in Realm, and the same thing happens in reverse as well.
A long-lived tyrannical king (reminiscent in some ways of King Henry the 8th) rules Realm with fear and paranoia, and his people pay the price. Magic-users are not safe under his oppressive hand. But Lily is brought there by a young man who knows a secret she doesn't know herself. He needs her unknown powers to free his loved ones, but can she survive the trials to come in this treacherous plane?
The world of Realm is beautifully vivid, striking a chord between the mystical and our own world. Centaurs and other mythological creatures make an appearance, and I was thrilled to see that a non-human character is even a potential love interest of one of the main characters.
Written in multiple POVs, this story honestly doesn't sit long (page-wise) with the Lily. We're pulled into the political corruption, unjust torture/imprisonment, and desire for freedom that the citizens of Realm yearn for in a poignant way.
With so many intriguing plot twists, fantastic world-building, and lovable characters, there are only two minor points that made this a 4-star read for me:
The first is certain aspects of the head-hopping. While I'm a fan of head-hopping POVs, there are three main POVs in this book and then (as I said) a minor one as well. Occasionally the timeline is a bit muddled because the POV will change AND go backwards in time to let us re-live a scene through a different character. This is entirely a style preference, but as someone who prefers to only read a timeline once (no matter whose POV it is in), I found this a bit confusing.
The second point is the 'disappearance' of characters from time to time. With such a huge cast of characters in the main party (think LitRPG, in a way), we know that some characters will get more lime light than others. There are times, though, where a certain character will just 'vanish' from the narration for pages at a time in key scenes like flying atop a {spoiler} or during battles. There were three times where I went back and re-read just to be sure they didn't die or leave the party, because it had been so long since they were mentioned.
Those two points aside, Realm is a wonderful introduction to dual-reality portal adventures. Romance is a side-point (and not between the two MCs, who have a different kind of relationship), which is refreshing. There is a wholesome, positive, family-focused vibe as well, which I loved.
A great debut novel for Cantwell! I am excited to read book two.
**Trigger Warnings: Mental Health/Sanitorium, Death of a Loved One.**
Realm is the first book I have read by this author, and I must say one of the oddest paranormal YA books I think I’ve ever encountered. The writing style is jerky and unsynchronised, but this suits the main character, Lily, who despite being drop-dead gorgeous and special, believes herself ugly and unlikeable. Here the book follows the tried and tested trope of the young person who has felt alienated all their life – turning out to not be a boring, humdrum human after all, but hailing from a different world or realm.
Then the story takes a sharp left turn from tried and tested and gallops off into pastures new – literally – with the introduction of Blaze (a centaur), a two-headed aunt, and a whole host of other strange and fantastical people. The plot cracks along at a fair old pace and things get a little confusing from hereon. I think I finally got it straight in my head who was who and what was going on – but possibly a little more in the way of an explanation would have helped the reader to grasp the situation a bit quicker.
The writing is interesting and a refreshing change from the sappy dialogue that is the usual fare for the YA genre. I liked that there is no obvious male heartthrob – in fact, Lily has a choice – if indeed she chooses either of them. The interactions between the characters showed potential and I think in future books – if there are future books – they could develop into nicely rounded, three-dimensional relationships.
Just a personal observation, but as a Brit, the name Tracy is exclusively a female name so to have a main character be called that, but be male, and be impersonating a woman when we first encounter him, caused some slight bewilderment as to who he was.
Realm is a fun read for readers who enjoy the books of Rick Riordan but be warned – if you don’t like cliffhanger endings there is a mega one at the end of this book.
I believe there are writers and there are storytellers. When you discover an author who is both, consider yourself one lucky reader.
Author Jessica Cantwell is a true storyteller. This first installment in her Realm series is a marvelous tale, one that not only takes the reader on an adventure, but celebrates taking chances. And that’s what captured my attention throughout The Adventures of Lily Monroe. The risks taken not only by the main character (Lily), but also the willingness of the “supportive cast” around her to jump into the journey, no matter how frightening it might be.
This type of genre is not typically what I reach for – but early in the story I was hooked. In fact, I found myself picking it up as often as I could and finished the book quickly. I just had to know how Lily’s adventure would resolve. (And it did… and it didn’t! Luckily, there are two more books in the series.)
Cantwell elevates Realm’s fairytale landscape by developing her own set of mythological beings. We not only find a minotaur, dragons, and elves, but we’re introduced to magnificent aerosaurs and the absolutely terrifying chirachnophagous. (If like me you’re not a fan of swimming in nature’s lakes and seas, you might want to have someone hold your hand when you read the scene featuring these horrific terrors!) I was also delighted to see Cantwell run Lily and crew through some traditional paths on the hero’s journey, such as bringing them to face Scylla and Charybdis from Greek mythology.
Small note, but I want to call this out: As a reader, I love it when an author plays with words on the page in a clever way. Throughout the book you will see her love affair with words. Consider the language Cantwell uses when Lily is deciding on whether to cry or not: “I decided to let it go, just the one. I watch gravity rip it from my chin and pull it to the ground. As it detonates against the wood floor…” Can’t you just see that tear break free from Lily’s face and feel the sorrow it represents as it hits the floor? You will catch flashes like this throughout the book.
I’m curious to learn how the plotline of the family Lily “left behind” will play out now that she is in Realm. I do not want to leak any spoilers, but one mentally-fragile relative’s fate must certainly be changing, and I’m hoping to find out in book two of Realm – which I already have in hand!
So, hats off to author Jessica Cantwell! I’d sit around your campfire and listen to your stories any day! And lovers of fantasy adventures? Pick up your copy of Realm: The Adventures of Lily Monroe. This is a quest you won’t be able to resist!
I was sent a copy of this book for review by the Author.
This is a fantasy YA story set in our Earth and an alternate dimension called Realm. Lily is stuck in a rut. She is standing still while she cares for her mother who is suffering from a mental illness and not moving forward with college and her own life. When a friend suggests taking a night off and heading to a bar she reluctantly acquiesces. At the bar is she confronted by a stranger called Dmitry and his gang who take her to Realm. Something goes wrong and she ends up separated from them.
When she wakes up she meets Blaze, a beautiful Centaur who she is instantly taken with. He takes care of her and teaches her about this new world. She learns how similar it is from Earth but also the differences such as the fact that magic exists, mythical creatures roam free and some humans have supernatural powers.
When Dmitry shows up he tells Lily that he is her brother and she was once from Realm and that he needs her help to rescue their father, who has been imprisoned by the King who rules this world. Lily and Blaze agree to go with Dmitry and his friends but they encounter perilous lands, dangerous creatures and the King's men who try to kill them on the way. As Lily learns about her family, new friends and what powers they possess, she starts to develop her own supernatural abilities. Whether they have enough strength and firepower to win against the King's forces in time to save their father, only time will tell.
I give this 🌟🌟🌟🌟. The story was well thought-out and used beautiful imagery that made it easy to visualise the scenes and creatures that Jessica brought to life. Lily, Blaze, Dmitry and the other characters were well developed and all had unique personalities/traits that made them interesting to read. I loved how they sparked off each other but came together when needed. The pacing was a little slow to start but this was mainly due to the time taken to introduce the characters and backstory. Once this was done the story flowed really well and built quickly for a fast paced finale. Bring on Book 2!
Realm is a magical tale that is the perfect YA/NA fantasy. I have always been a sucker for normal people pulled into magical world stories. Chronicles of Narnia is what drew me into reading as a kid and this book has many similarities that I enjoyed. Lily, the MC, is a normal girl until she is dragged into Realm, a magical other world that she is from. Lily is pulled into a daring and deadly quest to rescue her father. With her brother by her side, and his band of friends, including a charming centaur. They embark on a classic quest of budding abilities, strange and wondrous creatures and a cast of characters that you’ll adore. This is not a super lengthy read which makes it perfect for a sunny Saturday read or something that busy, young readers can manage in a week. The descriptions are what really draw you into the world and make you feel connected to the story. The story leaves off at the right moment in a form of cliffhanger, the plot of the first book is wrapped up but also sets the stage for the next book. Verdict: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Buckle up for a wild ride in Realm--where there is always another monster, twist, or funny line coming!
Cantwell has made a very creative world in this book, and I'm looking forward to more adventures in Realm. I don't want to spoil anything, but I loved how Earth and Realm were connected and influenced each other. It was a very unique and cool setup!
There were also some really fun characters, and twists I didn't see coming. Lilly is a good heroine with relatable emotions, and Tracy was a riot. Dmitry gave me some surprises along the way, and the end of the book leaves you wanting to know what happens next.
The story shifted POVs, and it was fun to get into multiple heads. Sometimes the flashbacks were a little too long for my taste, but I also enjoyed getting more insight into the characters' pasts.
I'm not big on love triangles, but at least in this book it felt fairly mild. Probably because there's so much else going on!
If you're looking for a book with mythical creatures and a fun cast of characters, check out Realm!
The opening chapter of this book had me hooked. I don’t typically read much in the fantasy genre but I have been broadening my horizons of late and I must say this was a great book to start with.
The story follows Lily, an incredibly likeable and relatable young girl who has been dealt a rough hand in life. I must say her backstory is beautifully crafted and I could actually read a whole book on just that alone.
Her rather miserable life here on earth is abruptly shaken up one night when she is dragged into the parallel universe of Realm. What ensues is a magical action packed adventure filled with really interesting characters in an equally interesting world (the centaur is a personal fave). We hear from not only Lily but multiple other PsOV which I’m a huge fan of and I feel it added a real depth to the world. The intensity and action throughout is broken up with plenty of humour which makes for a very enjoyable read.
The author has created a fascinating world with Realm and I can’t wait to see what adventures are in store for the characters next. And the best thing, book two is already waiting and ready to go!
This was a fast-paced page turner! I ended up reading it all in one sitting. The author crafts beautiful descriptions and prose that sets the scene. I liked the inspiration from mythology and the original creatures in this story!
I love multi-POV and quests and this book has exactly that. Combine it with a fun cast, interesting character interactions, and tasteful humor, and you have something for different ages to enjoy!
What a fun story! I loved the characters and the fast moving plot. The realm is full of strange and unique creatures. The fact that some of the main characterswere these creatures made the story that much more colorful without seeming contrived. I can't wait for the next book in this series.
This is the first book in a three part series. I loved being introduced to all the different characters. I also loved the world Jessica built in Realm. There are some twists and turns so you definitely want to read this first book and continue on to the additional two books.
I was never a fan of fantasy, but a new genre of authors are successfully mixing fantasy elements with characters based in the real world, and if you haven't read one yet, this story would be a great place to start. Lily is a relatable heroine, her family situation is believable and you're rooting for her all the way.
Realm: The Adventures of Lily Monroe is a fun, easy, and enjoyable story that uses multiple point of views and includes fun mythological creatures. There is fantastic world building and Jessica Cantwell is amazing with her descriptions and ability to make you feel like you have transported right along with Lily!
Realm: The Adventures of Lily Monroe tells the tale of – you might have guessed it – Lily Monroe! 😊 It’s exactly the sort of thing I like to read. Lily lives an unusual life and is a truly believable character with the thoughts and feelings of a real person. She is magically whisked into another world, called Realm, where she finds her brother (who she didn’t know existed) and his friends on a quest to save the father that she thought had died before she was born. I loved this story, it’s well written with enough description for me to imagine the world but not so much description that I got bored. There’s plenty of action and the pace is good. It was so good that I’ve already dived into book two of the series. I’m hoping to find that the character relationships are developed further because I feel like there was a love triangle developing that needs exploration. If you’re a fan of fantasy then I suggest you give this a go.
A brother-sister duo with supernatural powers band together to free their father in a magical world in the first novel of Jessica Cantwell’s Realm series. Lily Monroe works as an administrative assistant at Revitalize, a psychology rehabilitation center in Baltimore, where her mother once worked and now is a patient. Hoping to take the edge off her own depression, the blonde-haired, fair-skinned beauty agrees to meet a friend at a bar, but through a series of actions is whisked to a magical world by accident, where she meets a handsome Centaur named Blaze who introduces her to The Melting Pot where he lives. The multiple perspective narration shifts away from Lilly to two Realm residents: Dmitry, her half-brother who can run 40 times faster than any person and is desperate to find Lily, and Tracy, a young man able to transform himself into birds and other animals. After some time, Dmitry finds Lily, introduces her to his friends and their two-headed Aunt Naomi who also lives in Realm. Lily has no idea she has a brother and that her father is trapped in this world, but a third big surprise is her own supernatural power—invisibility. The group soon bands together to overcome a series of vivid and terrifying Odyssey-style challenges in order to free Dmitry and Lily’s father Jaasin from imprisonment by evil King Theothantonos. Cantwell creates a vivid and interesting world that exists in a shadow dimension of Earth where magic is possible and New York’s Twin Towers stand tall as does the Berlin Wall. The multiple perspective narration and dense cast of characters confused me at times but overall I enjoyed the fast-moving plot, exciting fight scenes and terrible wonderful beasts. The aerosaurs are a stand out with “the face of a horse, a long dinosaur neck and feet like a lizard” with “feathered wings and a feathered fan at the tip of their tails.” In all, intriguing supernatural characters and mythological challenges drive this fun novel and promising series.
My Rating : 3.5🌟 . Kindle/ LiteraryBoundTours/ September2020 #mabookyardchallengeSep2020 . Thank you @literaryboundtours for the review copy which let's me give you my unbiased opinion. . This book follows our main character Lily as she is taken away from her home to the mysterious land of Realm and navigate her way through her surroundings with a band to free her father. . First, this book had an amazing plot line. The concept of a parallel world, and the existence of things that disappeared in Earth going there to exist was pretty cool. The characters/creatures from folklores being normal citizens, and the kind of monarchy rule they had was interesting to read about. The magic system was based on a person and the way it manifests on everyone was different! . Second, I really like the perfectly imperfect group of family & friends coming together for a quest that would not benefit a lot of them, just because one of theirs asked? Oh my heart I want a gang like that. The characters introduced were are so drastically different, it is quite funny to watch their banter and existence. . Now coming to the plot-line and writing style, though I liked the concept of the book, I think the writing style did not appeal to me. We have multiple point of views throughout the story, but you get confused as to who is who while reading because the chapter headings didn't have the all the time. Also, I felt like the writing a bit erratic and extremely fast paced and it didn't give me time to process all that happened. I would have loved to have more world building and character depth as we go into the next book because this book focused mostly on the plot. . Overall, this book had an amazing potential with the plot it had, but with a little nore world building and character arcs and pacing, this could be an amazing start to a new series!
“Anthroposophy… is a spiritual philosophy that states any human who conscientiously cultivates sense-free thinking can attain an experience of the insights into the spiritual world and therefore is able to enter a magical domain. In essence - another realm. Do you understand?” “So, what you are saying is that I am on Earth but in a different form of it?”
Realm is a slick, multiple perspective fantasy that draws on Greek mythology. Lily has white-blonde hair, aquamarine eyes, loves her junk food and works in the rehabilitation centre that her mum founded before beginning to hear voices and becoming an inmate. Lily lives in Baltimore, the city of murders, and longs for a fantastical or romantic escape. And boy, is she going to get them – both!
Rescue begins to insinuate itself slowly into her life in the form of two handsome men in black, more intense and improbable speculation by her mother, and out of character behaviour by her colleague Sonny. When Sonny insists she go out with her to a bar, a very strange transformation takes place. There’s an altercation and one of the men in black grabs Lily and suddenly she is transported into another magical world. Realm is recognisable as our world, with resonant and tragic sites such as the Twin Towers and the Berlin Wall, but it also contains mythical creatures including a centaur and Scylla and Charybdis, beings from Greek mythology. Before she knows it, Lily is brought into a larger group with magical powers and close connections to her – a group on a mission to overturn a major injustice wrought by the malign King Theothantanos.
I really enjoyed the first Adventure of Lily Monroe, a book that will appeal to those who like their fantasy to blend the real world with fantasy settings and mythical creatures.
Lily Monroe is an interesting character. She dreams of adventure but keeps to her daily routine always. Her way of life is brutally interrupted when she is forced through a portal to another realm by a shapeshifter. Lilly finds herself on an adventure like never before as she navigates life in the realm and meets her brother.
The whole storyline and world-building in Realm were unique. It was very interesting to think of Realm as another plain existing within our current world. I also thought it was so cool that objects or large structures transfer from Earth to Realm and vice versa. For example, when the Berlin Wall came down it went to Realm. The type of magic and the way it behaved within Realm were also unique.
However, there were some aspects of the book that bothered me. The biggest problem I found was random head-hopping. You would be reading a specific character’s POV and then all of the sudden a paragraph or two would be in one or more character’s thoughts. For the most part, Cantwell did a fantastic job making sure the reader knew whose POV the chapter was written in, and she used doodles for chapter breaks/scene changes. I love when the author makes a clear effort to let the reader know when the scene of POV has changed.
I believe as Cantwell progresses with her career she will be able to foresee these errors and grow as an author. I am excited to read the next installment in the series!
Lily Monroe’s mundane life is turned inside out when she’s dragged into a fantasy realm. Not only does she find the brother she never knew existed, but discovers her dead father is actually trapped in this strange, exciting world.
Realm opens with the day-to-day of Lily’s quiet life, but Cantwell quickly spins a head first descent into a fantastical world where Lily’s initial acquaintance happens to be a centaur. From here, Cantwell’s wild imagination runs free, taking the reader on a fast-paced adventure.
There’s a lot for Lily to absorb; the discovery of her brother, the fact her father isn’t dead, but trapped in Realm, and the emergence of powers she didn’t know she had. Along with this she deals with dangerous creatures, treacherous lands, and the menace of the king’s men who wish her dead.
Cantwell has created a complex, exciting world in Realm. Her characters are well developed with their own quirks, and I loved how they all pulled together for their mission. I did find the multiple POVs tripping me up in places, but that could be due to how fast I was reading!
With book 2 waiting, I’m looking forward to seeing where the adventure leads next.
Phew! Poor Lily - she gets whipped from the Earth that she knows straight into Realm; a land with many fantasy creatures. Fortunately, one of those includes a rather fine centaur. Did it just get hot in here?
This is a proper, good vs evil story, complimented by a plethora of well-rounded characters. I felt invested in each one's path as they traversed the perils of monsters at every turn. And then there's the family aspect - and boy, are they interesting?!
The story is beautifully written with just enough gorgeous description so you understand the world you've been plonked into.
Each character takes turns in telling you their story, sometimes breaking the third wall. I found this a charming way of getting to know them, like they were having a conversation with me. Their abilities are as diverse as their appearance and personalities.
There's the hint of romance (not steamy, but a triangle is forming). Along with minimal, bleeped out swearing, this in the YA category imho. There is plenty of wit & banter too btw.
This tricky quest is just the beginning! I'm excited to read what happens next.
Thank you to the author and Literary Bound Tours for providing me an ebook in exchange for an honest review.
Realm’s synopsis really sucked me in from the start. I was excited to read it because, well, I just wanted to see how the modern and magical elements would be presented and balanced out. What I didn’t expect is how much I would love it!
I love the world building! A world where all mythical creatures and humans co-exist? Sounds like the perfect place! But there really is no perfect system, is there? How the conflict was presented really gave way to showing us more about the characters and how much they’re essential to the story.
Then there’s the alternate dimensions concept that was used in the book. I seriously think that this is so believable and that’s why I enjoyed this book a lot. The feelings the characters were experiencing were also relatable, especially Lily’s.
That cliffhanger definitely has me gearing up for book 2!
Realm is the story of a young woman named Lily. She is pulled from her daily life into an alternate world that is like her earth, yet it is peppered with mythical creatures and humans with super-abilities. She meets her unknown brother and his family and friends for the first time, and joins them in a quest to free her father from imprisonment. The author, Jessica Cantwell, has a gift for description. Readers can imagine themselves alongside Lily battling through dangerous terrain and escaping monsters that would make diehard mythology fans dive for the covers. Readers can see the joy the author puts in her work, and the deep, vivid images she has in her head. One of the "WOW" factors of the story is the new creatures she creates. I highly recommend Realm to anyone who enjoys the legends of the ancient world. I loved it!
The Adventures of Lily Monroe is a classic example of a portal fantasy. Lily Monroe is a typical person, living a rather normal life until she is thrown into a world much different that our own.
Once in the world of Realm the pacing of the story takes right off. Which made it an enjoyable and easy read, but it would have been nice to have a breather here and there for characters and relationships to develope. It was a bit surprising how quickly the love triangle developed.
I really enjoyed the idea of the connection between our world and the world of Realm. The sort of trading of land marks and buildings, and mythology. It's interesting that each character has a unique ability, and I especially liked the scene that introduced Kirill.
I look forward to reading the other books in this series!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Disappearing is something Lily ponders about. This coincides with a wish to be whisked away to a better world. A desire that comes true.
Well, partly does. Lily ends up in a parallel version ( Realm ) of the same world, Earth. Better is also questionable. Apart from the splendor, many monsters create obstacles. Although here, they are easily spotted.
Jessica Cantwell creates an enchanting quest with family and loyal friends. I have hitched myself into the series and will remain there till the journey's end.
I have heard amazing things about Jessica Cantwell’s Realm series and this book definitely lives up to the hype. I adored Realm. I am a sucker for alternate worlds, exciting adventures, and interesting characters; Realm has all of that and more. Lily’s journey into Realm, Earth’s alternate dimension, is packed with strange creatures, friendship and danger. Cantwell created a complicated and sympathetic main character in Lily. Lily’s vulnerability and inner strength makes her a character you root for and are turning the pages to see what exciting spot she’s going to find herself in next. I fell in love with Tracy. His attitude and sense of humor totally won my heart. I can’t wait to see what happens to Lily, Tracy, and the rest of the characters in books 2 and 3.
Realm was a real page turner. I could not wait to read what happened next! This is high fantasy as we deal with Earth and an entire new planet that mirrors what happens on earth. Things and people that go missing on Earth may end up in Realm. Cantwell develops this cast of misfit characters together with ease as we follow along with Lily Monroe on her heroes-journey through Realm. There is action throughout and multiple characters you end up rooting for. There are fantastical creatures that seem inspired by Greek lore. The tone of the book is very much like reading a modern-day version of the Odyssey! You will not be disappointed. I fully enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it to all the fantasy fans & friends out there. I cannot wait to read book two in the series!
Realm: The Adventures of Lily Monroe is the first part of a fantasy series set (mostly) in an alternate Earth populated with fantasy creatures and humans who possess "abilities." The lead character, Lily Monroe, is a young woman from our Earth who is dragged into Realm by her half-brother she did not know she had, and pulled into a quest to save their father from imprisonment. The world-building is rich and characterization is strong. The story was fun, with a plot full of suspense. At times I wondered why Lily would stay in Realm when she was brought against her will. But the story was good enough that this did not detract much.
