Have you ever wanted to read the Bible more but didn't know where to start? Or have you wished you could relate to what you read in the Bible on a more personal level?
It's not easy to find commonalities between us and Mary the mother of Jesus or Esther the queen. But what if we were more like them than we thought? What if their stories mirror our own lives? What if we were as trusting as Mary or as daring as Esther and we didn't even realize it?
Girls Like Me is for the young woman who wants to develop a Bible reading habit but also relate to what she reads. It's an easy-to-read devotional for the student, new wife, new mom, or new Christian.
Girls Like Me will challenge you to read your Bible more, discover how your life is similar to those of the women in the Bible, and challenge you to live life a life of meaning and purpose.
Hi, I'm Shelbie Mae! I live with husband and mostly blind Boston Terrier on the West Coast but I'm really an East Coast girl. I love writing new books, baking fresh chocolate chip cookies, running, reading, exploring new places, meeting new friends, and, of course, chilling on the couch with a bowl of popcorn and a movie. You can connect with me on Instagram @shelbiemaewrites or on my Website shelbie-mae.com. I'd love to hear from you!
Shelbie Mae brings insight from her own life in light of Bible stories featuring a variety of God-fearing women. Shelbie's experiences enhance those of women from the Bible and support the reader's journey of faith. This book takes a positive, encouraging approach to life and demonstrates how the reader can accomplish her goals. Shelbie wrote to younger women, but her thoughts are easily applied by older women as well. I'm 76 and could relate to much in light of my own life and the lives of others I have observed over the years. Frankly I'm surprised that Shelbie has figured life out at such a young age! Kudos to her for reaching out to others in such a strong and vibrant way. I am recommending this book to a prison ministry for women, as I feel the inmates searching for direction will find it in this book. So will all who read it.
Skimmed through in preparation for some nonfiction articles. Good to see the stories of different women, and definitely gave me a lot to think about. Not the deepest book but that's not the audience anyways. ;) The devotionals I didn't look at super closely but seemed solid.
Small disclaimer: I don't think I'm the target audience for this book. The author isn't very clear, but based on the themes covered, my assumption is that these devotionals are aimed at girls 12-14 years old. (However, there are some discussion that seem to be more high school level.)
The main reasons for my rating are: 1) "The worth and sum of our beauty should come from how much we love God and how we show the world that love," (p. 126). Statements like this, nice sounding but theologically shaky, are sprinkled throughout the book. (If my beauty is based on my efforts, I'm in trouble.)
2) In an effort to write for young teenagers*, I think the author reduces down rich biblical stories into stories that revolve around us and our 21st century issues. (Granted, 12-year old me would have ate this up & I'm undecided on how I currently feel about this take on Bible reading.)
*Also, "There's nothing wrong with nights of Netflix and chill," (p. 162). This one is just funny. Given her other statements in the book, I don't think she actually means what this phrase means:).
This is an easy-to-read, easy-to-understand, thoughtful and encouraging devotional that was written for younger women but would be a welcome book for women of any age who want to read the Bible and might be intimidated or think they don’t have time. Shelbie explains how she wrote this book especially to help girls navigating high school, college, first jobs, boyfriends, new husbands, and new babies read the Bible more, and discover how their life is similar to those of the women in the Bible. I currently don’t fit any of these categories, yet still felt it was a valuable read.
Author Shelbie Mae writes from her own experiences, in a gentle and warmhearted style that is non-judgmental and full of understanding. I appreciated that she didn’t try to use heavy-handed humor or drama, and her tone is that of a supportive friend.
She uses experiences and emotions from her own life as examples that anyone could relate to. She explained how “Acceptance of God was only a stepping stone on a journey I am continuing to take. Over the years I have dealt with mental health, crippling fear, and depression, an eating disorder and self-harm.”
The 12 short Bible studies focus on biblical women, with a format that encourages thoughtful introspection. Some of the studies are three days in length, some are longer or shorter. Each has a “Before you start” explanation, “What to read” which lists the Bible passages, how to relate the girl in the Bible to experiences in your life, what to do, a question to consider, and at the end of each study she writes a “Letter from A Girl Who Cares.”
This book is offered free on Shelbie’s website https://shelbie-mae.com/freebies/ as well as Amazon’s kindle store. If you’re looking for a simple way to read your Bible more, discover how your life is similar to those of the women in the Bible, and consider a challenge to live a life of meaning and purpose, I highly recommend reading this book.
Being a 70-year-old nondenominational Christian who is trying to be a good Christian woman, I found this book to be an enlightening reading experience for all young teenage Christian girls, as it brought back memories of when I was that age.
These days I can't get enough of reading nonfiction Christian books, as I had been away from my faith for far too young, only finding myself again after publishing my first two Christian books on January 11, 2020, that had been inspired my having reviewed over 260 books of which approximately 45% had been for nonfiction Christian books during 2019.
I loved how author Shelbie Mae integrated her life experience with that of 12 biblical women. By doing this, the author demonstrates to her readers that their harried lives today are not too dissimilar to those of these biblical women. As Christian women, we possess the same kind of accomplishments and have faced the same challenges as these biblical women did.
For each of the twelve women, the author breaks down studying them over several days. Each day is broken down into four components. GIRL READ, where readers are given a biblical selection to read and reflect on. GIRL LIFE, in which the author presents a life experience from her life for readers to compare their lives to. GIRL DO, is an invitation for her readers to discover applying their lives to what they've just read. GIRL ASK, readers, are asked a question for them to consider and reflect upon.
For wanting her readers to possess an understanding that their lives are the same as the dozen Biblical women discuss, and more importantly, to have her readers read the Bible more often, I've given Shelbie Mae 5 STARS for her endeavor here.
A very encouraging devotional for girls and women. This book explores the lives of women in the Bible and compares their struggles and triumphs to what we face today. It is very informative and encouraging. Through the lives of women such as Esther and Mary Magdalene, I learned so much about myself and ways I can serve Jesus better.
This one took me some time, but yet another example of timing when reading certain books or chapters. If you have ever had the thought of I can’t resonate with the people especially women in the Bible then I would recommend this book. The writer takes you through every story with real life today stories and examples. I will read it again most probably in a few years.
As a fairly new Christian, this was the first inspirational book I've read. I cried a lit of tears as much of the book mirrored my own life. Most of all, I got into my bible and I continue to do so. Thank you so much.
