The Space Between

Rate this book
When the world began to end it was a quiet apocalypse. It started with the whispers of the dearly departed, their thin voices struggling to get through from the other side to regale the living with tales of the beauty and wonders of their realm. Then came the suicides. Families loaded into cars with hoses running from the exhausts like they were going on vacation. The religious took up arsenic for communion. Couples swallowed handfuls of pills to die together, hands clasped. The world went quiet fast.Trevor Hastings never had anyone he cared for and nobody that cared much for him. When the dead came whispering their promises of peace and eternal bliss, he didn’t listen. Nobody considered that the dead may lie. Now, stuck in a world where civilization has ground to a halt he must fight for survival and a reason to live. As the dead get stronger and the living more dangerous, Trevor must navigate the treacherous new landscape to either find his place in it or else become another whisper. Fans of Stephen King or Bentley Little should find themselves completely at home within the words and worlds of Jack Night.

Even though this book is out of my preferred genre,
I thoroughly enjoyed it. The story was paced perfectly and there are a broad range of characters to connect, sympathize with and even despise. This story has good atmosphere and is all substance. It does not contain the cliche trick startles that many in the horror fantasy genre tend to overuse. I’ll be thinking about these characters for a while. Jack Night is an author I will read again and here’s hoping for a sequel to The Space Between.
