An invitation has arrived for the Great Martial Arts Tournament in the Mercenary State of Zem. Its grand prize? A single wish. Having previously broken off diplomatic relations with the Zem, though, Souma had no intention of responding—that is, until he received reports that the daughter of the former General of the Army will be participating?!
Her father, Georg Carmine, was disposed of as a traitor following the rebellion. Should she win and wish for revenge, that might lead to an all-out war against the Kingdom! Looking to probe her intentions, Souma sets out for the Military State. There, he meets the King of Zem, who he learns is equally in the dark regarding what she has planned.
Volume twelve of the revolutionary administration fantasy series starts now!
This light novel has so so so many side stories, I'm beginning to wonder if the author forgot about the main plot arc and secondary plot arcs. Main plot arc was rebuilding the Friedonia Kingdom (supposedly author believes main character Souma finished this at the end of volume 4.) Secondary main plot arc is to defeat the Demon Lord in this alternate reality world. Fuuga Haan has recovered a city taken over by the monsters in the Demon Lord territory. Friedonia is currently not doing anything to finish the Demon Lord war. Maybe author thinks that by creating diplomatic and social relations with the rest of the kingdoms and territories of this Landia Continent (other world), his "governance" objective will hold true? In this Volume 12, Souma travels to the Mercenary Zem territory to be part of the finals of a mercenary tournament in Zem, that the daughter of Georg Carmine´s (strongest warrior of Elfrieden) daughter is participating in. Volume 12 is all about this martial arts tournament in Zem Territory. Zem Mercenaries accepted contracts with the corrupt and depraved nobles that were executed at the end of the failed coup d'etat (change of power) in Elfrieden on the 2nd. Volume. Instead of having them responsible for their illegalities, Souma is pretending that nothing happenned with the Zem Mercenaries. Souma is not honest or open with the Grand Chaos Empire, nor with the Zem Mercenaries. Friedonia does not need mercenaries (because of their lack of loyalty and serving the highest bidder/lack of honor) Souma reveals interest in ending pirate activity in the Nine-headed Dragon Archipelago to the Grand Chaos Empire. While the Empire seeks the consensus of the human territories, it does little to nothing to finish the supremacy of the Demon Lord. Jeanne and Maria spend most of their time quelling conflicts within the human territories, and little or nothing to end the Demon Lord. Sounds a lot like the United Nations Organization. This volume 12 is the first volume that is 35% less writing that the 250 pages that are usual for all of the other volumes. Even though it is much less size, the whole volume can be considered to be another side-story, filler, volume of this series.
I think, reading for free online as it was originally published, I would be happier overall
I am deep into this series, 12 books and looking at the 5 I know to come, and I know I will finish it but the question I come to ask myself is ‘would I recommend this series to another?’
The answer isn’t quite as straight forward. The anime overs the first three and a bit books and does a better job of the story. The third pass at the material has given them lots of space to clean up pacing/timing issues and the anime is good. The books are the core of that, but… the lack of refinement caused by multiple eyes on the material shows up here.
The last four books have all been… simple? and can be summarized in a couple of paragraphs without leaving out any plot or overall arcing details. The bulk of the text is interpersonal relationships that don’t interest Me. The word choice isn’t dynamic, as the translator does the job without injecting purple prose or themes. I don’t care who the assistant to the king’s second queen might marry or the difficulties in their flirting.
So at this point, I think the answer to the question ‘would I recommend this series’ is a No. the anime is great, watch that. This isn’t a depressing drag like Game of Thrones, nor a feast of English like the Hobbit. And if someone said they love these books I would point them to Terry Pratchett or Tom Holt. However if someone say they are fine or they want to see the animated version. Yeah, that’s about the right level of interest.
So good for moderately fast text to speech. Interesting developments in this one focusing on Georg's daughter and getting her back into the kingdom.
The exhibition battle between Mio and Kagetora was unexpected and very cool. The king of the mercenary state of Zem also turned out to be a surprisingly decent & shrewd guy. The appearance of the empire was also unexpected and a bit comical when Mio became caught up in everything. Laughed at the live broadcast funeral / restoration of honor for Georg. Overall Mio is very likeable and has a lot of comedic scenes including the developments with Colbert.
There is a bit of setup for the upcoming book involving conflicts with the Archipelago here as well. Looking forward to seeing how that plays out.

Souma and the Kingdom of Fredonia continue to grow and now his family is also growing. Souma has two kids and he is all about family. Which makes the news that on his travels to the Nation of Zem he will meet Mio the daughter of Georg Carmine. Souma and his attendants believe this will only cause troubles but they feel confident and will face them. All to be able to go to Zem and do a little extra work and meet with the Great Chaos Empire representatives. Series keeps adding people and the world building is top notch. Its a fun read and not to be taken deeply or lightly. Souma does give you good hints into some problems we are having right now. But thats a different review. Its another enjoyable volume.
King Souma attends a martial arts tournament in the country of Zem. The daughter of George Carmine is competing. Souma wonders what her wish will be if she wins. Will she ask the King of Zem for war on Souma's Kingdom in revenge for her father's death? I like the action, humor bit of romance. I look forward to the next book.
The plot of the story was solved in the first half of the book. The rest is... lukewarm. Still, I like it when the story takes place outside of the kingdom. Even when there are always new characters, the author has to limit the number of those who would travel with Souma. Right now I'm just waiting for the story to end.
This books ties a few things that were hanging loose, visits Zem, lets a few characters finally see each other in person and prologues the next volume. It feels transitional again, but handled much better than the previous volume.
I love this series. While most books concentrate on the action portion of fantasy, this book stays grounded in a fantasy setting. I wish they were released more frequently.
