What a fabulous, emotional, steamy story of revenge, healing and love. I love the old Silhouette Intimate Moments line when the books were a meaty 250 pages. And Nina Bruhns was so well-suited to them, if she would quit the vampire!sheikh stuff and go back to writing like this, I'd snap it up in a second. Can I add how much I love New Orleans settings? And is there anything hotter than a Cajun hero?
The plot is good, without overshadowing the romance. The hero is a cop on leave who's trying to track down his brother's killer. The heroine is a school counselor on vacation trying to track down her missing sister. Naturally they become entwined, as the hero considers the sister his best lead, and worse thinks that she IS her sister. Her irresponsible, wild-with-men sister. There's not much mystery as to who the bad guy is, but the suspense as to when he and his goons will show up hovers in the background until the gripping, scary climax.
The romance is both touching and extremely hot. Auri and Grace both have issues. I really felt for him - his childhood left him unable to bear being touched (he usually handcuffs his sex partners). I wanted to hug this strong, sexy, yet vulnerable man (I wouldn't have minded the cuffs either). His Creole phrases were hot, his tattoo was hot, his bursts of jealousy were hot. Grace's issues seemed less important by comparison - she was the straitlaced twin and was afraid of bad boys and her attraction to them. I could understand that her father's desertion made her believe that bad boys never stick around, and the bad boy teens she counseled weren't any better. But I still think she went too far, pushing the hero away when he clearly needed her. The scene where he asks her at the end to have sex with him one last time and touch him, so he would know what it's like to make love like a normal man, damn near made me cry. So it riled me that she still planned to leave, cuz of her he's-a-bad-boy-so-won't-stick-around mantra. Oh and some loser teens needed her back home, who cares? But this was a small blemish on an otherwise awesome romance. Highly recommend!
5++ stars for the yummy, hot-as-sin Cajun cop hero who’s the purrrfect combination of sexy alpha bad boy, swoon-worthy protective and sweet, and so tortured you wanna hug him tight.
5+ stars for the YOWZA steamy and touching sex scenes.
-1 for the heroine and the lack of communication and misunderstandings between the H/H.
5+ stars for the sigh-worthy epilogue.
Okay, I stink at statistical equations, but I think that works out to something like this.
3+7+6-1+6 = 21/5 = 4.2, but I’m rounding it up to 4 ½ stars! And there’s no need for a picture of the hero ‘cause the studtastic hunk on the Kindle edition book cover is a yummylicious fit!
Hola hotness! Romantic suspense - 4.5 blazing hot stars!
Welcome to Bourbon Street and Louisiana where hot Cajun men are ready to charm your pants off! Bad boy, rough cop Auri was no exception! The New Orleans heat wasn't the only heat radiating from the pages in this wonderful romantic suspense!
Sometimes it is not only about the book, but it is also about the book fitting your mood and this was the perfect match!
Auri is a bad boy Cajun cop who has gone rogue in his search of his brother’s murderer. He moves in next door to Muse. Muse is a party girl with bad taste in men who is involved with some mafia guy. But the person he is spying on is not Muse. It is Grace, her straight-laced identical twin sister, who is trying to figure out why her sister is missing.
From the first moment Auri meets Grace sparks fly! Their chemistry is off the charts.
"Don't stop now, chère," a sultry masculine voice rumbled from the shadows. "You're just getting to the good part." The accent was unmistakable. Cajun French. She swallowed heavily. She'd heard about these hot-blooded Cajun men. They were intense. Passionate, like their music. Nothing like the calm, dignified South Carolina gentlemen she was used to. Sweet heavens.
The book is set in wonderful Louisiana and I could really feel the heat radiating from the pages. It is a colorful book and the descriptions made me feel like I was actually there. The sexual chemistry was as convincing and I could not stand the wait!
I really recommend this wonderful gem. It is one of the best romantic suspense books I've read in a long time. The twin-cop troupe might be a bit cliched – but it really worked in this one!
The star of this book is the sexy Cajun hero Auro "Creole" Levalois. The story is good but the hot hero makes the book. A little inspiration from The Big Easy:
Auri "Creole" Levalois is a cop investigating the murder of his foster-brother. His foster brother was there for him in a terrible childhood and when all people left him and betrayed him, he stuck around and even though their life took different directions(he became a drug-dealer), they stuck together. Auri hides his scars both physical and emotional and uses the name "Creole" for that reason(it doesn't have the best meaning stemming from childhood). In order to find out the man behind Luke's murder he rents an apartment opposite to the woman who is the girlfriend of the man who can lead him to his quarry.
Grace is the twin of Muse but they are complete opposites. Grace is a psychologist who leads a structured life, attracted to but determined not to fall for men like her father who only look for fun and break hearts in the end. Muse is a hedonist, she lives outrageously and has an penchant for getting into trouble. So, when Grace gets a panicked phone call from Muse and disappears Grace makes her way to Muse's place in order to find out what is wrong. Very soon Creole finds out that she is not Muse as she is pretending to be but Grace. Both acknowledge the sparks between them but both are wary(Auri since he figures she will break his heart and Grace the same), but how long can one hold out?
There are some fiery scenes between them and danger comes to their doorstep and they find out that Muse is working with the FBI but seems to have gone offline. They also deal with each others hang-ups. Grace is patient with the problems Auri seems to have with physical contact.
All in all a pretty decent read. Off to read Muse's book.
Nina Bruhns is an author who caught my eye when I first stumbled across her Passion for Danger series which I just devoured upon discovery. I found Nina Bruhns to write a well balanced romantic suspense whilst juggling a lot of characters, delivering edge of the seat suspense together with enough heat to make her books the kind you can count on to keep you entertained throughout.
Sweet Revenge is the 2nd book in the New Orleans trilogy featuring the very hot Cajun hero, New Orleans Police Detective Auri "Creole" Levalois. Creole is a man who has survived the harshest and cruelest existence in life suffering at the hands of those who are bound to protect him. A victim of the mostly brutal foster care system, Creole's only close friend is his foster brother Luke for whom Creole would lay down his very life for. Luke's death at the hands of the notorious crime leader James Davies comes as a shock to Creole who vows revenge on the man who is responsible for his foster brother's death. Creole's only lead is to follow the trail of Gary Fox in the hopes that he would lead Creole right onto Davies's doorstep.
Psychologist Grace Summerville travels to New Orleans to find out why her twin sister Muse Summerville has disappeared all of a sudden. Grace and Muse are as different from one another as night and day with Grace being the sensible and responsible one with Muse living up to her well earned reputation of being the wild one. Grace is pretending to be her sister Muse when her path crosses that of the sexy French Cajun detective who stirs up all her senses and makes her clamor for his attention each and every time they come across one another.
Creole is a man who is well versed in the art of female deception. That along with all the women in his life who has betrayed him till now makes Creole a man who is wary of feeling too much for anyone of the fairer sex. But even his well guarded heart is not immune from how all his senses go on red alert when he comes across the alluring Grace Summerville who he is keeping under surveillance thinking Grace to be Muse.
Grace who has sworn that she would never let herself fall for a wild and undependable man like her father finds herself nevertheless a helpless victim of desire when it comes to the wildly dangerous Creole who sets off all kinds of reactions of the right variety deep within her as they team up to find out what happened to Muse and to draw in Luke's killer.
The mystery potion of the story is quite small with the main focus of the novel being on how the relationship devlops between Creole and Grace. Creole is a hero of the yummiest kind who whispers all the right erotic stuff in sexy Cajun which makes my knees go wobbly each and every time. He is a tortured hero who doesn't come across as a brute, but rather is a man who has so many endearing qualities to him that I couldn't help but fall hard and fast for him. Though his history is not overly much detailed, the reader is able to piece together a painful past which makes Creole a man who is doubly protective of his heart and trust.
Grace had grown up with a father who had upped and left when the going had gone tough. Past relationships had shown Grace that she doesn't have the best taste in men, always ending up with someone who wants to live for the moment. So when Grace comes across Creole to whom her reaction is volatile at best, Grace does the next best thing and denies anything she feels for the man who kisses her senseless and makes her forget each and every sensible thought ever to cross her mind.
However, even when Grace witnesses firsthand the type of honorable man Creole is, even when he shows her over and over again how hard it is for him to trust people and nevertheless wins over his trust, even then Grace never fully understood Creole enough not to walk away from him towards the end. This fact rankled a bit for me with this story, made me feel at times that Grace didn't deserve someone like Creole who has a broken soul which heals under the Grace's tender ministrations. However, thankfully things did work out in the end, and I ended up with a huge grin on my face after reading the epilogue which shows my Creole all happy with the kind of love and family he has never had before.
If you are looking for a contemporary romance featuring a hot Cajun hero, a romance that features a bit of suspense to make things interesting, grab yourself a copy and read this one. Though I expected Creole to be a bit different from the hero he turned out to be, nevertheless he makes for a hero who induces all the right kinds of feelings making this a well rounded story in the end.

Winner of: 2003 Daphne du Maurier Award for Best Romantic Suspense of 2002
This book was more about the relationship between Grace and Creole rather than a mystery/thriller. It did have a small storyline about sister Muse and the search for her but I kept waiting for more storyline about the events with her. The story really never went in to how Muse came up missing. I enjoyed the first book in the series, 'Catch Me If You Can' and expected some of the characters from the 1st book to be in this more than they were. The only character, Remi Beaulieux, [cousin of Simon Beaulieux from "Catch Me If You Can"] was the only one from book 1. His part in this book was very very small. While the book held my interest, I was still waiting for the steamy love scenes to not be every other chapter and was expecting more thriller/mystery. Don't get me wrong, the book is well written if you like a lot of steamy love scenes. I don't mind a little but I enjoy more suspense/thriller/who done it type reading.
Grace Summerville's identical twin had disappeared without a trace in the shadows of New Orleans' French Quarter. And the only way to find her was to become her - to masquerade as her wild, live-for-the-moment sister....
It was a difficult role for this shy, quiet woman to play, and Detective Auri "Creole" Levalois wasn't making it any easier. He was as seductive, and perhaps even as dangerous, as the city he loved - and he was drawing her into his own bitter search for revenge....
And she had to keep the truth about her desperate charade from him - even as she ached to give herself, body and soul, to a man who believed she was someone else.
The only downfall I saw for the second story in this trilogy, it really didn't have anything to do with any characters from the first book. Sure, one of the main characters from the first book makes an appearance towards the end but it would have been nice if the author touched with those characters as well.
That being said, the story of Grace and Creole was written well. The ability of both characters overcoming their obstacles and finding love during a time where they aren't looking for it speaks volumes for the human heart.
Nina Bruhns has a style of writing I am growing to like. Her stories keep my attention and make me want to find out what happens next.
I started reading this, but was extremely disappointed not to recognize characters from book one. I totally expected to read about Remi or Deputy Doug. Honestly, I didn't get further than chapter two because I wasn't invested.
## I liked the heroine. She was strong and sweet. I even liked the plot (twin taking the place of completely opposite twin). What I didn't like was that the hero was a heavy smoker and his speech pattern was so distracting, it took away from the story. 2 stars was all I could manage.
I am new to Nina Bruhns, but i have to say I am loving what I am reading. Great characters, loved Creole, he is great. Love a tortured hero. can't wait for Remi and Muses story.
