Tamar really struggled writing this bio, in part because it’s in third person, but mostly because she hasn’t decided whether she’s primarily a psychologist who loves writing, or a writer with a lifelong fascination with psychology.

She must have been someone pretty awesome in a previous life (past life regression indicated a Care Bear), because she gets to do both. Beginning her career as a youth worker, then a secondary school teacher, before becoming a school psychologist, Tamar helps children and teens to live and thrive despite life’s hurdles like loss, relationship difficulties, mental health issues, and trauma.

As lover of reading, inspired by books that sparked beautiful movies in her head, Tamar loves to write young adult romance. To be honest, it was probably inevitable that her knowledge and love of literature would translate into writing emotion driven stories of finding life and love beyond our comfort zones. You can find out more about Tamar’s books at www.tamarsloan.com

A lifetime consumer of knowledge, Tamar holds degrees in Applied Science, Education and Psychology. When not reading, writing or working with teens, Tamar can be found with her husband and two children enjoying country life on their small slice of the Australian bush.
The driving force for all of Tamar’s writing is sharing and connecting. In truth, connecting with others is why she writes. She loves to hear from readers and fellow writers. Find her on all the usual social media channels or her website.

WOW! There is no lack of action in this sixth installment of "The Thaw Chronicles"! The Seekers have been chosen and prepare to leave Askala for the Newlands. Even before they set out they get signs of just HOW dangerous this mission could be, and while they're on the water in their boats they get attacked by a leatherskin. And this is only the beginning... Be prepared for a roller coaster ride!

As usual we get several point of views; Sam, Hawk, Mercy and Luca. Sam is still annoyingly naive, sometimes foolhardily so, despite getting a lot of evidence of the Newlanders being dangerous and not empathic at all. Strangely enough her clumsiness seems to have vanished?! I felt it was a big thing in the former book (which I didn't quite like).

As if trying to befriend the Newlanders wasn't stressful enough, they experience some conflicts within their own group. Some hold secrets and new relationships develop. You almost have to put the book down once in a while to get a breather! And of course, our authors leave us hanging on a cliff in the end...

* I received an ARC from the authors and I'm giving my honest review. *

Our batch of Seekers has been chosen and they are on their way to to the Newlands to establish contact with the Outlanders who have all ready settled their. Our Seekers will learn of the danger that threatens to upheave all they strived for in Askala and will very likely cost more then they ever bargain for. This book is full of very intense drama, emotionally violent scenes, and romance. I can’t wait to see what unfolds in the next book.

Epic Escapism

The twists and turns in this book are something else! It's been amazing to get lost in another world - brutal as this one was. I just didn't know what was coming next. Injustice, frustration, love, loss, survival, pioneering, beastly pig-headed characters... this adventure has them all. The ending... well, I certainly didn't see that coming and now I can't wait for the next story in this amazing trilogy, which BEGS to be brought to the big screen!

I am really happy that there are more books to come from this series than there was originally planned and I start kind of yearning for the world it is set in when I haven’t read anything about it and its characters, so when I saw this one was available to read it certainly wasn’t a case of “if” I was going to read. It definitely was right I want to read it now!!

The covers over the whole series are amazing and flow extremely well. Using the birds on them is great and I love that the characters aren’t on the book covers so you can keep your own imagery for them. I bet this set of books as physical copies on a book shelf look amazing!

It’s straight back into the action, and a mysterious note is intercepted by Wren and her nephew Hawk whilst they are sat contemplating the future on the sand. The note certainly raises the questions of Who it was meant for? Is their yet another traitor in their midst? And of course, exactly What does the note mean? The leaders take it extremely seriously and call a meeting to vote whether they should still send the Seekers over to the Newlands to try to create a coexistent, cooperative life with those already on Newlands wasting its natural beauty and its potential. The youngsters that made it through to be chosen as Seekers are still keen to go. Saying perhaps this note means they are needed out there spreading the word and ways of Askala to prevent further bloodshed and potential wars with those who want to take what they have. The Seekers are determined to teach the kindness, and the Alaskan way of living. I suppose from the blurb there’s the clues there that of course the Seekers leave Askala, so its not a spoiler as such and to do my review I have to reveal they do go to the Newlands. There are all the tearful goodbyes, some parents beg their children not to leave, but as the youngsters point out they have trained for this.

In the end two boats go across containing the Seekers and one other additional member of the group. I think most people will guess who. The journey across the acidic sea is fraught with danger, so much so when the seekers do make it to the Newlands it is without some of their valuable supplies. This book covers the ups and downs and dangers the Seekers have to cope with from their new surroundings, those that have already settled on the island. The Seekers soon learn that their task is going to be much more difficult than they at first thought. The Seekers and those in Askala think for the future of the earth and their families. However, those that came from the Outlands that have built their new home on the Newlands Island live very much for the day. Sam tries to convince them to think of the future, rather than trap hares to eat immediately, set up a breeding programme so they will have a plentiful supply moving into the future. Hawk and some of the others help by preparing and planting a garden, so there will be vegetables to eat when they grow. A pod breeding system is also set up but it seems this is a lesson too complicated for the Newlanders and when their friends from the Outlands visit a lot of what the Seekers have helped to set up is ruined.

There’s also some besotted, love matches happening in this book too. Will they work out or will some of the Seekers end up broken hearted. We also lose a couple of Seekers whilst they are on the Newlands, which illustrates just what a precarious situation the Seekers really are in. It also seems that a certain someone is hiding quite a few secrets about his life in the Outlands and the people he met. In fact, there are a couple of Newlanders that already know him and he isn’t keen on them letting that fact become common knowledge.

I loved the introduction of the new character of Tarquin and would love to read more about he in the future book. Tarquin seems to have really taken to Mercy too. I get the feeling people underestimate Tarquin and she is much older than her age. Perhaps she is just the person to over hear the information the Seekers so desperately need that will affect not only them but their loved ones back in Askala. There were a couple of things that didn’t quite make sense to me. A few of the characters actions surprised me, a couple sort of acted a little differently than I expected they would have and another reverted to what I thought they had grown out of. Sorry if this sounds cryptic but I don’t want to give spoilers but I want to explain how I felt about the book and its characters.

My immediate thoughts upon finishing reading the books were that it had been yet another action-packed book in a fantastic series. It becomes clear Askala is still in danger from both the Outlanders and probably the Newlanders too! Looking forward to reading more.

To sum up this is another action-packed book in a fantastic series. It becomes clear Askala is still very much in danger from both the Outlands and the Newlands too….This book both raised and left me with so many questions, such as, Will the Newlanders ever really understand what the Seekers are trying to teach them? I guessed the answer to one of the mysteries within the book, though I kind of think that the Falcon could have been a group of people or at least more than one person. I really don’t understand what Sam thinks she will achieve or what she really wants by going with Ekon (again cryptic I know, you’ll get it when you read the book) The questions I have been left asking are, Why the need for Sam to break Hawks heart in this process? Why couldn’t she have been more honest with him? How many secrets is Lucas still hiding? At one point I thought he was Tarquins dad!! Why does Luca have to fix everything alone and break Mercy’s heart in this process? And my final question, which I reckon will definitely be covered by the next book is How will Hawk, Mercy and Gust survive and continue in the Newlands? I think I can say this book really twists and turns and has you feeling all sorts of emotions for the characters. It also has you going off on a tangent trying to answer the questions that certain scenes and situations make arise. I mean I really went wide with the whole Luca and Tarquin didn’t I? That’s the beauty of this book absolutely anything could happen!!

“Exist: Beyond the Thaw” is the sixth installment “The Thaw Chronicles” by Tamar Sloan and Heidi Catherine. “Exist” is the second book in the “Beyond the Thaw” series, which is conceived as a follow-up to the original “After the Thaw” series. Not so much an “spin-off” series as a continuation of the saga, which explore the lives and decisions of the new Askalan generation in their existential struggle.

The four chosen Seekers are on their way to the Newlands to form new connections with the Outlanders. The first obstacle remains nevertheless, to cross the acidic sea without loosing their supplies or any member of the expedition on the attempt. But even on solid ground the danger to the Seekers persists, the new environment turns out to be highly hostile and the mission a far cry from what they were expected. The different ways of life and expectations for the future will clash and both fractions will learn that usually the best solution lies right in between two ‘set in stone’ world-views.

I said it already but it is worth repeating: “The Thaw Chronicle” series is without any doubt the best dystopian series of this decade, it lines effortlessly up with “The Hunger Games” and “Divergent” and surpasses them with a very carefully crafted world, the right amount of dystopia and social critique, the constantly questioning of the values and drawbacks of the system that allow the reader to understand the strengths and flaws of the system and to find unsettling similarities to our own society. As stated above I refuse to see both “After the Thaw” and “Beyond the Thaw” as separate series, they both are part of the “Askala-Verse” and flow into each other flawlessly. “Beyond the Thaw” has already surpassed all my expectations by large….. and believe me, when it comes to Askala I have very high expectations 😊

Tamar Sloan and Heidi Catherine have created a wonderful dystopian world, foreign yet familiar, beautiful and terrifying at the same time. Their writing is fluid and nuanced, with a very good editing and a powerful message, very well developed and multifaceted characters, an extraordinary thoroughly built world, action non-stop, an intelligent plot, and very satisfactory developments. It is a fast-paced book, a real page-turner, a great adventure that leaves a lasting impression without disregarding the level of pure entertainment every good story should provide.

Perfect ingredients to a faulty recipe

While this entry does a decent job in advancing the overall story and granting me some spiffy revelations, everything else surrounding those moments was just all over the place. The ingredients were very much THERE. They were actually the perfect ingredients. There were plenty of would-be exciting, dramatic, and shocking moments, things I didn't see coming (which is GREAT in a series whose direction is fairly predictable). Unfortunately, those perfect ingredients mean very little when they were THIS scattered and thrown all over the place, coming together to create not the perfect recipe, but a hodgepodge of mess.

This is exactly why I wish the previous book did a better job in establishing the newest plotline of branching out into the world outside of Askala. The structure is just so incredibly irresponsible of Askala to do. Even in this second entry, I STILL can't buy teenagers being THIS pushed out into the great unknown on their own, whether it be from passing some tackily thrown-together tests or their own insistence on being independent. There were too many variables that made little sense to me in this book, too many characters doing asinine things that simply don't work. It all felt very disorderly, from the passing of time to the awkward character arcs. Some things felt very forced into scene for the sole purpose of creating a dramatic flair but without substance to make it work.

I wish I can spill them all my problems with this entry out one at a time, but I honestly don't have the energy to do so. Plus, this review is a spoiler free one anyway. I will say this much, though: people do some STUPID things in this book, most of it not making one iota of sense, given the type of characters they are. This is always a scary time for me as a reader because it taints what fondness I'm trying to have for the characters telling the story. I truly hope this entry will be the only dud in the whole series, as it's officially the lowest rated one of them all.

Let's see what else is in store for the next entry....*fingers crossed*

Hawk, Sam, Mercy, Luca and the rest of the seekers leave for the Newlands with hope to share the success of Askala. The journey is nothing but perilous having to fight off a leatherskin shark on their crossing. The Newlands is dangerous but the determination of the group is still hopeful. They find water, harvest terapods for food and catch rabbits to breed. This helps until one night they are attacked by a group of Outlanders looking for one of their friends. The dangers become more real.
This book was full of drama, action and budding romance and twists you get sucked into. A futuristic story of trying to rebuild a world destroyed by man. I love this book and series. I highly recommend.

I have been reading the past books in this series and really enjoyed them.

This book was also a wonderful read.
It deal with a selected group of young adults chosen or rather selected to be the pioneers to unite the people outside of their protected city Askala.

There are several layers of people out with the gates of Askala and how the young seekers engage with them and how they are in theory accepted is the story.

Some of the main protagonists.... do not survive. Some of the relationships are strained to enable survival of the others... this is truly an interesting challenging read.

It is part of a series but can be read as a standalone.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I don't even know how to rate this book...

This installment was fast paced and kept my interest throughout.

It can definitely be defined by the phrase "one step forward, two steps back." But because of that, it could be a little exhausting. Toward the end of the book, the more that is revealed, the more frustrating it became.
The positions that all the characters ended up in at the end up the book left me extremely disappointed. I'm left questioning if I want to continue this series.

3.5 stars? I don't even know.
I actually enjoyed reading this book, I thought it was going to end up a 5 star read but the developments and ending of the book ended up ruining a lot of it for me.

Deadly days

The Seekers arrive on the New island. It is inhabited by Outlanders, and their new commander Corbin, is a horrible individual. The Seekers take one step forward and two steps back...continuously. Sam thinks she is being effective by showing the commanders don Raiden how to grow good, Greek hares and pods to have future food available. But its all a bad joke Raiden wants more than that. Luca and Mercy get together, but someone comes between them. Nothing works well. Some of their group is murdered and one flees back to the mainland.

It's an interesting story.

Wow and Ugh!

Book 6 continues to build the suspense- will the Seekers survive the very cruel reality of the world? Living in Askala doesn't prepare anyone for dealing with the cruel realities of life. My heart breaks for Hawk and Mercy. This book definitely makes one realize that communication is vital! Wow- cuz the surprises don't stop and Ugh!- cuz now I'm mad at the characters that I loved!! I get the feeling that the next book is going to increase my agitation! I predict more frustration as the wrong people get together in the effort to protect, when all they really need to do is talk their truth!! Book 7- here I come!...

I'm glad that this book is set on the Newlands so that more of the environment was explored.

The huge miscommunication going on between Hawk and Sam, as well as Mercy and Luca, just annoyed me. I wanted to shake the characters because so much drama could be avoided if they just spoke to each other properly.

The pacing was ok. I wanted there to be more plot twists.

There was a big reveal at the end about a mysterious person who had been acting like Robin Hood before he "died". It wasn't a surprise to me because I had guessed it pretty early on.

Ok so I left a review on Amazon already but I had to leave one here too. This has been the best book of the series so far! The twists and turns and surprises and betrayals threw me for a loop. There were lots of times I had to put the book down and scream "what are you doing!?" I kept saying "I can't read anymore don't pick it back up," but of course it was too good not to continue. The ending had me MAD that it was the last page. I was like "really, you're gonna do me like this?" I am so ready for the next in the series!

Never a dull moment

The saga continues with more struggles and triumphs and disappointments for our characters. The story is so well developed that even when you can figure out what happens next, something takes place that you never saw coming. I love this series and feel it's better than divergent series.

Five stars isn't enough for this absolute masterpiece! This is a thrilling and engaging read that sucks you in from the start and keeps you hooked until the end. The characters are amazing, the world building is enthralling, and the storytelling is just beautiful. I honestly cannot wait to see how the series continues!

Well shit. That seems how most of these books have left me. A feeling of "I saw that coming" and "What the heak just happened?!? 😱" This series continues to draw me in. Continues to make me like and dislike the characters all at once. So many feels. Looking forward to what happens in book 7 and how Askala, The Newlands and The Outlands will all move forward from here....

This book took me a bit longer to get into than the other ones. Just when I couldn't put it down, it was over! Sad day! I like the series though and am excited for the seventh book to come out! It leaves off on a huge cliff hanger, but that's not uncommon for the series.

This book is incredibly intense. Tamar and Heidi delve into the depths of human nature at it's basic level. The physical and emotional battle between the haves (Seekers) and the have nots (Outlanders and Newlanders) and the dichotomy of their relationships, compassion, trust, empathy, loyalty, courage and hope is truly revealing and surprising really. This entire series is fantastic but this book takes it to a different level.
