Unconventional
East of Nowhere is a story with a wonderful cast of bizarre characters and situations that are beguilingly damaging. The uniqueness of this story brings fascination and excitement as we keenly observe daily life at the bottom of social existence. The cast-offs and losers somehow bond in their shared misery and teach us more about humanity than many an example of success.

Edward Miller is a dislikeable, mean and self-indulgent man. He gets his comeuppance when his life spirals out of control and he loses his wife, home and job. When his fall reaches the lowest depths of hopelessness, he meets an array of comic and tragic characters. While his new life is chaotic, surreal and self-indulgent, he starts to find meaning and unexpectedly love.

Miller, for all his self-hate and disillusionment, uncovers the fundamental nature of love. Initially determined to drift into isolation, he hesitantly establishes bonds with these characters and one lady in particular. He is put to the test whether he is genuinely a bad person, the person who brought him here, or has he changed into the person who will get him out. Millar’s help is needed but does it matter to him? Can he turn his back on other people’s troubles, or should he exercise the only selfless act of his life, to help someone he now cares about?

East of Nowhere, is an entertaining, dark, funny and painful story, which offers a chance for redemption and true meaning in life. It is a unique novel and well-written story with intriguing colourful characters that really engage with blunt and humorous dialogue.

A book I really enjoyed reading and I would highly recommend. 4.5 stars

Although I normally wouldn't give up on reading a book, I can't even bring myself to finish this. That's how uninteresting and plain it is.

Maybe someday, someday when I have absolutely nothing else to do, I may just give this another read.

What a fantastic book. One mans journey of self discovery. Not only does he change his life for the better but also the weird and wonderful characters he meets along the way. Brilliant.
