When our worlds seem to spiral out of control, we sometimes find ourselves desiring to transform our homes, bodies, and lives, hoping to gain a sense of peace and purpose. But how do we care for our souls? This refreshing devotional will help you cleanse yourself from the inside out by allowing God's Spirit to come and produce the soul qualities you long for.
The Beauty of an Uncluttered Soul by Carla Gasser is a truly beautiful devotional journal.
The Beauty of an Uncluttered Soul starts out with an introduction by the author and a description of the artistic process by the illustrator, Vivian Kammel. Then there is a short chapter explaining how to use this devotional with the SOUL study method--Search, Observe, Use, and Lean. Then the book is divided in to three sections with three chapters each: Checking your attitudes: How do you respond to God?, Connecting your actions: How do you relate to others?, and Choosing your habits: How do you renew your soul? There is also a conclusion chapter and one of helpful terms at the end of the book.
I found The Beauty of an Uncluttered Soul to be a simply gorgeous book with full-color watercolor illustrations. Then each chapter invites the reader to learn and grow through both the reading and the journaling sections. This book just left me feeling spoiled with using it as it truly seemed to touch my senses from different angles. I relax best in nature so the floral and greenery pictures soothed my soul. I also felt it helped me draw closer to God. I would recommend it for yourself and The Beauty of an Uncluttered Soul would also make a gorgeous gift book for a friend or family member.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions within this review are my own.
"The Beauty of an Uncluttered Soul: Allowing God's Spirit to Transform You from the Inside Out" is a lovely book, filled with gentle water-colored botanical illustrations that are a peaceful pleasure to view. Author Carla Gasser advises how to "cleanse, tidy, detoxify, purge, and simplify' on a deeper spiritual level. Her own realization that the reasons for cleaning, decluttering, and maintaining her home were principles that could be applied to her inner, spiritual home as well led her to search Biblical Scriptures for direction and guidance. By allowing the Heavenly Spirit to enter her life through prayer and meditation, she discovered nine attributes attributed to a transformed life: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. In her own life, the author states that following this spiritual path has led her to "an inner sense of peace, purpose, and contentment". In times of widespread uncertainty when doubt and spiritual confusion threaten to overwhelm, finding your own calm center can give you back your joy in everyday living. This beautiful book is a blessing to keep and a blessing to give.
Thanks to Bethany House for the free review copy. All opinions are my own. This book is beautiful. All of the artwork is stunning. The devotions on the fruit of the spirit are deep and make the reader delve into the Bible and do the work on developing these fruits. I liked how it didn't just give the verses, but had the reader look them up and apply them. There are also different sections of each fruit, which makes this the perfect devotion for a weekly type of study. It's also easy to read and the author makes the content relatable to the reader. I can't wait to do this study over and over again.
The Beauty Of An Uncluttered Soul is an absolute treasure! The topic of Scriptural soul care is a topic I am passionate about and I thought Carla Glasser presented this often misrepresented topic with superb Biblical knowledge! It is obvious from her written words that much prayer and listening went into the writing of this exceptional book! The illustrations are lovely and thoughtfully add to the reader's journey. This is an interactive book that can be used as a part of a daily quiet time with God or as a stand-alone to begin the guided process of searching one's soul and God's Word for truth. Not many books get a 5 star from me but this lovely book does. I highly recommend this gem to you!
“As you examine each of the nine spiritual attributes, you will go through the sequential process of searching, observing, using, and leaning,” writes in Carla Gasser at the beginning of her book, The Beauty of an Uncluttered Soul.
~ What ~ This one-hundred-and-forty-four-page hardbound targets mainly women who want to rid themselves of internal clutter and focus on their relationship with God via the nine Biblical spiritual fruits. After notes from the author and illustrator, study method instructions, and useful tools, it contains three parts, each with three chapters, and ends with a conclusion, helpful terms, acknowledgments, notes, and biographies. Using mainly the English Standard Version of the Holy Bible, The Message, NASB, NIV, and NLT are also referenced. Beautiful watercolored designs of nature grace almost all the open pages that include a silk yellow ribbon marker.
By expounding on the fruits of the Spirit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, each of the nine chapters covers one attribute to be discussed throughout the week. The chapters cover the topic through the four processes of searching Scripture, observing ways to promote the attribute, using it in every-day life, and leaning on the knowledge learned. With written-out Bible verses, quotes from famous people, and the author’s experiences, there are sections to write notes and answer questions.
~ Why ~ In these complicated times, it is hard as a Christian to declutter the heart and mind and focus solely on God. I like the journal-type format the emphasizes one of the fruits per chapter and applying it to one’s life. There is a lovely charm to the book’s visual presentation.
One chapter I appreciated was on joy as it expounds on its “calm delight” that is not based on circumstances, people, or things. Bible verses added are from John, I Peter, Romans, Psalms, and Philippians. Joy’s characteristics are different than happiness as it restores our souls and brings us eternal hope and direction. The lack of joy can be from unconfessed sin, being ashamed of our faith, and saying no to God, yet we can lean on a better understanding through reading about King David and Ezra from the Bible.
~ Why Not ~ Those who do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ will not understand why the soul yearns for a better connection to Him. Some may not like the added personal experiences from the author or having to write answers or notes within a book. Others may prefer daily Bible reading or a yearly devotional that does not cover only nine weeks.
~ Wish ~ While this is a lovely gift book for a friend or self who feels overwhelmed with the clutter of life, I found it could be read daily instead of over a week. I prefer different Bible versions and that all pronouns of God were capitalized for reverence.
~ Want ~ If you are looking for a beautiful display book that recalls the fruits of the Spirit can unclutter the myriad of internal angst and worry, this will help reevaluate attitudes while transforming the soul.
Thanks to Bethany House for this complimentary book that I am freely reviewing.
In Beauty of an Uncluttered Soul, Carla Gasser has written a new book about transforming your soul. In the book, she used an acronym for the word, SOUL to guide readers into decluttering their lives. It stands for searching, observing, using, and leaning. She explored the fruits of the Spirit found in Galatians 5:22-23 and how we can experience these qualities in our lives. These included, “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control”. Each devotional type explored each fruit of the Spirit. She revealed how we can make three piles to unclutter our souls and to make room for peace in our lives. One of the ways was in giving away our worries and fears. We can learn to give them to God and not to be concerned about them any longer. There are countless things that we are constantly worried about and it’s stealing our peace and it’s time we learn to throw them away and declutter our souls. She also included a special section about the tool’s readers will need while they read the book. These included, a Bible, art supplies, pen/pencil, notecards, journal, helpful terms (in the back of the book), and questions.
I would recommend this awesome book to anyone who is ready to study and learn more about the fruits of the Spirit and they are searching on how to declutter their souls. I immensely enjoyed how she broke down each fruit of the Spirit and how she looked at each one by using the SOUL acronym in order to explore the meaning behind each fruit. I liked how she included different scriptures throughout each study on the fruits of the Spirit. One of my favorites was when she discussed the topic of kindness and she included examples on how to reach out to others and show them kindness. Some of these included, compliment the waiter or waitress on excellent services maybe tipping more, making meals for your neighbors or people in need, giving a gift package to delivery people, letting people cut us in line, and much more. I also liked how Vivian illustrated the book to make it more appealing to readers and to keep them engaged. Most of them was of nature, trees, flowers, leaves, and fruit. I liked how she included questions and left some room where readers could answer the question inside the book. I also liked how they included a yellow ribbon bookmark where readers can bookmark their reading spot.
"I received this book free from the publisher, Bethany House/ Chosen for my honest review.”
The Beauty Of An Uncluttered Soul, by Carla Gasser, is a nine week journey to regain the health of our soul by restoring order and simplicity, thus gaining back peace and purpose.
The author turns our focus to Galatians 5:22-23, where we find the fruit of the Spirit, and the attributes of a life which finds it rest in God. She explores each characteristic of the fruit, using the study method she calls "SOUL":
- Search - for biblical truths on the soul qualities. - Observe - how do others demonstrate these qualities and how can we practice and thus develop the same. - Use -the knowledge and understanding to make application to our lives. - Lean - on God to fill us with these qualities by spending time with Him in prayer, solitude, and worship.
The study is broken down into three sections which address the following questions:
Checking your attitudes: How do you respond to God? Checking you actions: How do you relate to others? Checking your habits: How do you renew your soul?
A few of my favorite quotes from the book are:
"Paul intentionally places love first in the list of the fruit of the Spirit because for us to develop or demonstrate any of the other eight attributes, we must soak, submerge and immerse everything in love." (page 16)
"When we display kindness, we seek to rebuild, bring back. and heal a person or a relationship while maintaining its integrity and value. Because kindness puts others and their needs first, it has the potential to restore and heal." (page 65)
"When we walk in the Spirit and daily beautify our souls, we make Jesus visible to the world. Jesus loves and serves through us when we display these qualities." (page 131)
The book is beautifully illustrated by Vivian Kammel making this a wonderful book to not only keep but to give to give as a gift. The Beauty Of An Uncluttered Soul brings a much needed journey into the familiar fruit of the Spirit:
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law." (Galatians 5:22-23, NASB)

Do you feel sort of adrift, are you looking for a new beauty regime, or are you finding it hard to exist in your environment? You need a makeover, but not the common every day sort that involves clothes, hair stylists, or beauty routines. This one starts somewhere else.
Make yourself over by using the nine fruits of the spirit. Take the time to really apply them to your life, and watch what a difference you will see in yourself! Filter them through the lens of your SOUL--the author's acronym that is. In the book, Carla uses SOUL to stand for search, observe, use and lean--and she will tell you how to use each one.
Be ready to roll your sleeves up, have a Bible ready, and follow the instructions in this volume. You are embarking on a beauty cleanse for your soul, and it will take some elbow grease. But when finished, you will have gained tranquility and contentment in your life. In fact, you will have activated in yourself the nine fruits of the spirit found in Galatians 5: 22-23--love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
Wouldn’t you like to be like this woman which the author describes in her book:
“Have you ever met a woman with a sparkle in her eyes and a brilliant glow on her face that does not come from a costly and elaborate skin care regime? Upon closer examination, you may see crow’s-feet, age spots, and even a dull skin tone (Lord have mercy!). But no one notices. Why? Because she brings brightness to every one she meets with genuine goodness that shines deep from within her soul.”
You, too, can be like that, and experience a makeover from the inside out by following the author's instructions! Colorful illustrations add to the beauty of this hard-bound volume. I recommend this 5-star book to everyone who wants a fresh re-do!
Bethany House Publishers has provided Tickmenot with a complimentary copy of, The Beauty of an Uncluttered Soul, for the purpose of review.
Does it felt like a year cluttered with negativity. How do you combat such thoughts or feeling?
Personally, I've started using art and journaling to help settle my soul. Couple with the Words of God, it had been a sweet balm. If you don't know where to begin, I would like to recommend The Beauty of an Uncluttered Soul by Carla Gasser with illustrations by Vivian Kammel. Physically, it is a beautiful hardcover with colored pages and a yellow ribbon page marker. The illustrations are soothing as well. The format is easy to follow. It's formatted as a nine week devotional but can easily be extended for users to go on their own pace. Personally, it takes me more than a week to go through one devotional, but I also use it as a base with other projects that derive from it. For example, use of watercolors, journaling, transcriptions of song lyrics and Bible verses have all been additional outlets.
At the beginning of this book, it includes a page of "how to use this devotional" which isn't really instructions but more an explanation of the four action parts of each devotional. From Search, Observe, Use to Lean, each part deserves recognition in their own way. I love each part for different reasons. Search allows me to find areas in the Bible that relates. Observe helps me dig deeper into the topic. Both Use and Lean are the activity parts that guides yet allows me to stretch into my creativity. This is one devotional that feels different than others I've tried in the past. It's part story and part journal with limitless insight. Give it a try and let it guide you to an uncluttered soul.

What a refreshing idea: deep cleaning the soul, detoxifying it, getting rid of all the clutter it contains. Gasser helps us do that by searching the Bible, observing soul habits, using the knowledge we gain, and leaning on God to allow the Spirit to transform us within. Each weekly exercise includes good teaching, Scripture references to read, and several questions to answer.
A couple of the studies really impressed me. On peace, Gasser emphasizes we need to have peace with God before we can have peace with others. I was surprised that meant I needed to surrender by faith to God, completely trusting Him. Another surprise was the need to purge past mistakes, those things that keep me from experiencing peace with God. I liked her teaching on gentleness, that it may not be our normal disposition but it can become our attitude through the inner work of the Holy Spirit.
I had not really thought of the order the fruit of the Spirit is listed in Galatians and appreciated Gasser's insight. The first three are attitudes (love, joy, peace), the next three are intentional actions (patience, kindness, goodness), and the last three are soul attributes (faithfulness, gentleness, self-control). There is a reason they are listed that way.
An added aspect to the teaching is the wonderful artwork. Visual images have an impact on our emotions and thoughts and the watercolors are a visual incentive to relax.
I highly recommend this study on developing the fruit of the Spirit.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.
What a perfect time of year to be reading this new book The Beauty of an Uncluttered Soul by Carla Gasser. I have been in the process of decluttering my home, but what is also important and more so, is to unclutter our souls.
The book focuses on the Galatians 5:22-23, the fruit of the Spirit. The book goes through each of the nine attributes, using SOUL study method = Search, Observe, Use, and Learn. She describes in more detail, each of the attributes with Scripture and additional Scripture to look up and study, quotes from theologians, along with writing prompts and space to write.
I found the book to be encouraging and full of much needed Biblical truth. It is a wonderful study of the fruit of the Spirit! I loved how beautiful the book is also. One book to keep out and study with others!
This book is beautifully illustrated hard cover book, with a ribbon book mark to keep your place in it. The author shares why she put this book together, with a great how to use the devotional and tools you need for the book. I highly suggest a Bible, pen, and journal.
Highly recommend this beautiful book for personal and/or group study. It is an absolute gem. Beautiful to behold and packed with Truth from the Fruit of the Spirit. Carla Gasser is a gifted writer with the ability to relate to her reader through her deep well of personal and faithful experience. I love the way Carla uses the "SOUL" acronym (sections for "Search, Observe, Use, and Lean") to take us through the "cleansing" process. Working through the attribute of "Peace" was my very favorite part of her book, as she encourages us to "Purge the Past to Find Peace" by applying God's Word of Truth. Read this book in 2021 and be blessed, encouraged, and edified. Better yet, find a group of friends and read it together. This book is meant to be savored and shared.
The Beauty of an Uncluttered Soul is a devotional by Carla Gasser. Beautifully illustrated by Vivian Kammel. The Beauty of an Uncluttered Soul uses the SOUL study method. There is a ribbon attached to aid in holding the reader's place.
I felt a sense of calmness as I went through the devotional. The watercolor illustrations are very peaceful. I will be leaving my copy on my coffee table so others can experience the calming of the devotional.

This beautiful book is the perfect mix of devotional, Bible study, and journal. It invites the reader to get away from life’s daily demands for some quiet time with God. I love the practical steps the author uses to guide the reader through each lesson with the acronym, SOUL (Search, Observe, Use, Lean), drawing the reader to discover God’s truth and apply it in her everyday life. The pages are beautifully illustrated and inviting, prompting adoration for our creator as well as meaningful reflection on the journaling pages provided. In a world that seems to be spinning out of control, The Beauty of an Uncluttered Soul is a welcome oasis for remembering who we belong to and inspiring us to walk in this truth every single day.
I received a free copy of this book from Bethany House, but all opinions are my own. Because of the watercolor flowers planted throughout, the book has a rich, cohesive look and feel to it. Gasser takes the idea of uncluttering (or detoxifying) and applies it to our disorganized lives through the fruits of the spirit. Each devotion is a bit deeper than what I would consider a traditional devotional book, dedicating not a single page but several pages to developing each concept Gasser explores. She weaves personal experience, quotes from famous people, and Scripture verses together to present her unique approach. There is much that can be learned about developing the fruits of the spirit through this book!
This devotional based can be used as a daily guide for nine weeks to help get you back on track this year. It focuses on the fruits of the spirit, and shows how to apply scripture so you can declutter the junk in your life from the inside out. The pages are full of beautiful illustrations to help you make this guided journey of soul-searching. As a Type-A, I appreciated the organizational constructs, with each concept following the acronym SOUL (search, observe, use, and learn). A great morning devotional!
if there was ever a time for inviting peace into our lives, it is now. While I spend a lot of time trying to declutter my workspace, my house, and my inbox *shudders* -- it's so important to take that same focus and think about decluttering negativity from our soul.
The book is beautiful and Carla Gasser's use of her SOUL acronym (search, observe, use, and learn) to study Scripture is a great way to move through each chapter.
This is a great gift book (but make sure to get one for yourself, too!).
I received this book to review from the publisher. These opinions are fully my own.
This gorgeous illustrated 90-day devotional takes us through the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5: 22-23) as we seek to declutter our souls and enjoy peace and purpose. In this in-depth study, Carla encourages the reader to dig deep in Scripture and gives practical application for each of the nine attributes. I love that she suggests taking it slowly, one “fruit” for every week to consider and take root. This is a book I will come back to time and again for reference and encouragement. And it also makes a lovely gift!
This beautiful book has been so instrumental in helping me to “declutter” the aspects of my life that have kept me from fully leaning into God. Through providing opportunities to consistently spend time studying God’s Word and resting in His presence, I have seen changes in my heart. The fruit will take time to develop and grow but the framework that this book provides has set me on a better path towards a healthy relationship with God and flourishing fruit of the Spirit.
The Beauty of an Uncluttered Soul: Allowing God's Spirit to Transform You from the Inside Out by Carla Gasser (Author) and Vivian Kammel (Illustrator). The illustrations in this book were beautiful and it would be great to use on a coffee table or in a guest room. This devotional discusses the fruit of the spirit and offers practical ways to learn from them and use them in your life. The book focuses on how to transform your life from the inside out, focusing on your soul. There are scripture verses throughout the book. Thank you to Bethany House Publishers for this review copy.
This is the prettiest book I’ve read in the new year. The floral watercolor illustrations draw me in, and Carla Gasser’s peaceful writing keeps me engaged. She uses a four-part SOUL method for mind and heart renewal – search, observe, use and lean – to guide you, along with engaging questions and spaces to write. A gorgeous keepsake book that would make a beautiful gift.
I received a preview copy of The Beauty of an Uncluttered Soul from the publisher.
Highly recommend!! This will be a study I return to often (probably yearly). We need to clean out our “gunky” souls. Gasser provides a practical and thoughtful way of doing so. The best thing: she doesn’t make it a “five step way” that’s impractical. You have many avenues and can go as deep as you want. That’s why I can return to this study in a year and have a whole other journey to unclutter my soul than I had now.
This devotional based on the fruits of the spirit is an excellent guide on how to apply scriptural truths in a way that helps someone declutter the excess junk from the inside out. I loved the beautiful artwork that filled the pages. I also appreciated the way the author organized each concept with the acronym SOUL (search, observe, use, and learn). I thought it was well written and helpful.
I love this book! The author writes with balance and insight into a combination of a daily devotional with the depth of a Bible study. The illustrations enhance the text as they invite us to slow down, and give God access as we focus on His Word. Also, space is given to write/journal reflections and heart responses to what we gleaned from our time with Him.
This is a lovely devotional! It would make an excellent book to go through with a Bible study group as well as an inspiring book for an individual's quiet time.
After a few introductory chapters, the book is broken up into nine main chapters with one chapter for each fruit of the spirit. Each chapter contains five sections. The first section is a couple of pages of introduction about that chapter's fruit of the spirit. The second section contains scripture relating to that fruit and some scriptures to look up with reflection questions. The third section contains some practical information about the fruit and some additional reflection questions. The fourth section contains practical application ideas. Finally, the fifth section is a page or two with prayer and sometimes Scripture suggestions.
I think this devotional was extremely well done! I am planning to read through it again.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
