This was an okay read - nothing impressive.

A small backstory:

Emma has found a new babysitting job to take care of a young boy named Elijah, the son of a Ms. Hemple. The first night in the mansion, Elijah tells Emma that if she leaves a dollar out the man won't bother her. Emma thinks it is odd but she just figures Elijah has an imaginary playmate.
When things start to go missing and Ms. Hemple accuses Emma of stealing is when things get weird. Emma ends up seeing an apparition of a man that is wandering the mansion and tries to figure out what she can do to figure out the mystery of why the mansion is haunted.

Thoughts:

I thought this book was really going to be creepy, but it just fell flat. There was nothing to the characters at all - almost like reading about cardboard characters. I never felt any connection to them and then the ending just dropped off.

I have read a couple books by this author before and they were good. This one not so much and I think there should have been more with the haunting as it never had any spooky elements. Giving this book two "No Scare" stars!

Enjoyable Read

For a short story, I must say that it kept me captivated from beginning to end and quite honestly I wish it had been longer. I will definitely check out this author's other books.

Love the haunting stories

Well written, a little short, but a good story. I have a fascination of haunting stories and this author writes believable stories.

Love Carrie Bates

Carrie Bates books are short but they will scare the heck out of you from start to finish. I don't think I could handle a long book. She doesn't play around with excessive details about things that have nothing to do with the story either.

In this book we have a haunted mansion, a little boy, and a babysitter. There is a shadow ghost as well.

Emma is hired to babysit Elijah at Maple Mansion. She us thrilled at first but as the strange noises and stranger things start to happen during the nights she is babysitting she just gets plumb scared, not just for herself but for Elijah as well.

After learning the history if the house she decides to confront the ghost. Probably not her best idea. Afterwards she tries to tell Ms. Hamill, her boss, what us going in and is promptly fired. She finds out a few months later that things did get worse after she left, and that the family did end up moving but not without consequences.

I love old fashioned ghost stories so I jumped at the chance to listen to The Haunting of Maple Mansion by Carrie Bates. The premise is not a bad one, with an unknown presence living in an old mansion that appears to little kids asking for money and spooks the adults until they leave the house after living there only a few months.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Lindsey Dorcus who did an admirable job. Lindsey had good pace and enunciated clearly. I just wish there was more inflection her voice.

This short story runs at just over 1 hour, which is appropriate considering it read like an episode of the 1960's TV show "The Twilight Zone" or more recently, Ghost Hunters. If you enjoy those types of show, you will probably enjoy The Haunting of Maple Mansion.

Not a book but a short story but seriously needs and editor. The main lead character's name was Steven- but in the middle of the book, the woman yells for a "Raymond" - I spent several paragraphs, going back and forth trying to figure out who the hell Raymond was.

The tenses of the story were screwed up, -- words were left out of a sentence making the sentence not making sense, and lots of times, wrong words - correctly spelled but wrong words were used.

Sounded like it was written by a very uneducated person.

Another great book from Carrie Bates!

Another great book from Carrie Bates! This book is a book that grabs you from the very first paragraph and keeps you guessing until the very end. I don't know how she is able to write so many books that are the read with the light on. I can't wait for the next one. I highly recommend this book and author to you if you like scary books that makes your heart beat a little faster.

I've definitely heard this story before...I think I saw it on one of those TV ghost shows. Either The Haunting or My Haunted House. I love that you get a prolouge at the beginning to set up the story. A family moves into a house with a horrible history as a previous hotel. Always check your history before you move into a old house.

Really, Really Creepy.....

A very haunting book, if you’re afraid of things that go bump in the night. Don’t read this book at night.

Great short story and it was actually creepy. I love stories like this. Might be short but full good scares.

The book was an interesting short story, but a little bland. The ending of the story fell flat, in my opinion. It lacked mystery and suspense.

Awesome

Quite a ghost story. The young girl got away, but just had to go back to find out if the family was ok, after many years later.

Good little read. Sad ending though. Really like this author and the books I've read so far. Keep you guessing and none have been the same yet.
