Newly updated for 2023! This book defines all modern tech terms and explains how the machines and devices that saturate our everyday life work exactly. But here's the important part: the explanations in this book are written simply and in a way that the average person can understand. With over 100 chapters, you'll remove the confusions associated with modern-day technology, and gain answers to questions you may not even know you had.
A good general overview for a beginning student of computer science. It covers major milestones/inventions in the development of our modern technology, and also goes over the main components of a computer in a clear and concise manner. It's comprehensive enough to get you up to speed on computer basics, but it doesn't delve much into the finer details as it is written for a layman audience, and that worked just fine for me since I'm barely starting out with the basics.
My one and only complaint would be that the book is sometimes too concerned with making everything easy to understand - sometimes I'd be trying to read a sentence where the authors would stop midway to define a random word like "manufacture" or "accounting" and it would make me lose my train of thought. A small pet peeve, I guess, from someone who is used to noticing authors' stylistic choices. But this book achieves what it sets out to do, and I'm glad to have read it.
I can operate some of today's technology but am still learning the basics. Being born in the 60's makes me old school. I learned quite a bit from this book and appreciate the simplistic language, although in some cases this simplicity may make some chapters seem boring. Some things I already knew or was educated by my children, yet I still learned things I didn't know that will help me in the future. This is a great book for someone like my husband who has absolutely no understanding of computers and also for those with limited knowledge like me. Thank you for this book!
