Thi. Janakiraman is among the celebrated and acclaimed fiction writers of Tamil. Apart from novels, his contribution through short stories are diverse and illuminating. His fictional world is nuanced and detailed, Katcheri, a collection of his 28 stories adds to the expanse. These were published in Magazines and weren’t part of any collections till now. Restored back with great effort, these offer the readers new scenes from Thi.Ja’s world, and adds new colors to modern Tamil fiction.

About the author

Thi . Janakiraman (also known as Thi Jaa, or T. Janakiraman ) is one of the major figures of 20th century Tamil fiction. He worked as a civil servant. His writing included accounts of his travels in Japan and the Crimea.

His best-known novel is Mogamul (Thorn of Desire), in which feminine emotions are explored with a story spun around delicate feelings. His short stories such as "Langdadevi" (a lame horse) and "Mulmudi" (Crown of Thorns) follow the same style. Thi Jaa wrote about one hundred short stories and a dozen novels. Two of his novels, Amma Vandhaal and Marappasu, were translated into English as "Sins of Appu's Mother" and "Wooden Cow" respectively. In 1979, he was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award for Tamil for his short story collection Sakthi Vaidhiyam. Some of his other notable works are Malar Manjam, Uyirthen and Sembaruthi.

கச்சேரி என்ற ஒரு கதையே போதும். குழந்தைகளை வைத்து தி.ஜா போல் எழுத வேறு எவராலும் முடியாது. சிலிர்ப்பு நம்மை அழ வைத்தது என்றால் கச்சேரி நம்மை புன்னகைக்க வைக்கிறது. ஒரு feel good கதை. ஆனாலும் படிக்கும் போது கண்கள் கலங்கும்.

ஒவ்வொரு கதையும் மனதிலேயே நிற்கும்படியாக இருக்கிறது. கதைகளினூடே மெலிதான நகைச்சுவை தவழ்கிறது. அவை அலாதியானவை. கதைகள் கொண்டுள்ள கருத்துக்கள் வலிமையானவை.

இந்தத் தொகுப்பில் என்னை மிகவும் கவர்ந்தது கச்சேரி எனும் கதை தான். தி ஜ வின் வர்ணிப்புகள் மிகவும் புதுமையானவை இன்பம் தருபவை.
