Hellgate Guardians #3

Grave Decisions

Rate this book
My name is Medley Bell, and if you had told me this time last week that I was demon, then I’d have said you were nuttier than a squirrel turd. Of course, that was before I started seeing the strangest things. I’ve always been a little off, but it took stumbling into a backwater bar to understand how different I really am. So when two drool-worthy guys stop by to tell me that I’m Hell spawn just like them, I’m more relieved than shocked. I mean, it sure does explain a lot. Now, I just have to convince my mama and daddy that they can’t come with me on my first trip to Hell, deal with a hellish biological family I never knew I had, and keep from getting kidnapped by some weird Morax fella with snakes for hair.Things are about to get crazy around here. I guess it’s a good thing I like that.

Ivy Asher is addicted to chai, swearing, and laughing a lot (but not in a creepy, laughing alone kind of way). She loves the snow, books, and her family of two humans, and three fur-babies. She has worlds and characters just floating around in her head, and she's lucky enough to be surrounded by amazing people who support that kind of crazy.

Wondering about what happened to the series?

I try not to write nasty comments but I have to here. When books are split into 4 instead of finishing a story I expect the SAME story to flow. That did not occur. It seems that the authors actually finished the story in the second book and had to try to find a way to keep the story going for 4 books and this is what they came out with.

I find it funny that Medley has a southern twang but the guys who have been living there FOREVER guarding the gate don’t. This book upset me so much over dropping the “g’s” after every word Medley said that I looked up writing skills/writing with accents. I suggest the authors and/or editors look up the rules to writing a southern accent. I got to 30% before I just had to stop. I cannot read all the words without “g’s”. It is so distracting I keep slowing down or stopping at each word. I can’t get a flow going.

This is absolutely a let down. I loved the first 2 books. They made me laugh and I couldn’t put them down. So far this book is so boring and distracting I’ve actually stopped reading to clean my kitchen! I cannot recommend this book.

I also didn’t like that it just started as a new story. The authors throw the name Delta in a few times as a tie in but it missed the mark. This third book is awkward at it’s best. Medley sounds like an uneducated twit and her parents are basically described as toothless, bible toting crazies!

Get new editors or new beta readers. The ones you have are sorely lacking.

Wow, the reviews are really split for this series. Everyone seems to either give it 5 stars or 1.

Anyway, I'm going with the middle here. I still like it, although it's not as good as the first book, and I am a bit disappointed. Not enough to stop reading though.

True, the characters got a bit more annoying, but not too annoying. And the action is not as fast-paced and fun, but it's still decent and readable. I really don't get why someone would give this book 1 star (there are, unfortunately, waaaayy worse stuff out there).

Boring

Firstly this book is a completely different FMC than books 1 and 2. Which is somewhat annoying, and lame because I wanted to continue with Delta’s story. I don’t feel like her story was over so to have another FMC is somewhat annoying.

But Medley is Delta’s sister, and how we get to see how she does with finding out her heritage. But it was pretty boring in this book as NOTHING happened. Legit. We get to see Alder and Flint become something with Medley, but it takes more than half the book, we get to see her meet the birth parents, but we don’t do anything investigative, we aren’t proactive, we train, but barely, mostly the book is about Medley’s relationship to Alder and Flint. In all honesty this book could have been summed up in a few chapters and kept it in Delta’s book.

Now we get further information about a 3rd FMC for book 4.
I’m not a fan of this style, and I was entirely bored throughout this book. It’s good in terms of I enjoy getting to know the characters but in terms of plot and series plot, there’s not much here.

I’ll maybe eventually read book 4 but not right now.

I was surprised at how easily I took to HB our FMC. I found her just as bad ass as her sister.

The different back story and added family were fun to embrace. Her mum, dad and pet antics were funny and cosy, adding depth to the FMC. I didn't find her as funny as Delta but I love her personality and humour in another way.

There are two MMCs in this book, and I do enjoy them. although I don't feel as close to them as the four in the 1st two books. But we do get to enjoy them and Delta again in this book.

The book follows the POV of Melody aka Hells Bell aka HB, and it runs parallel in the timeline to what's happened with her sister and mates. I like how they are introduced to each other, and I like the spice is just as hot as her sisters chemistry. There is spice smex and filling smut 🤭

I have to say I don't think I would have enjoyed it any less with different POVs. I get the feelings it may have brought more depth to our MMCs, but I'm not sure if it's needed, giving I'm now used to the writing style from books 1 & 2

Book 3 ends with a cliffhanger, and we are about to be introduced to a new character. This time, it seems darker, and I'm looking forward to book 4

The first two books were good don’t get me wrong, this book however was everything and more. Back is the unapologetic heroine this time with a darkside (literally because she blacks out and goes darkside lol). I loved Medley so much and how she took everything in stride. She’s the absolute opposite of her sis Delta who at the start was afraid of her own shadow. Not only are Medley and her men (2 this time) great but so are her mom and dad. They are the absolute best, borderline redneck trailer cliches but also the most loving and hilarious family ever. Her dad has a flippin pet alligator, one he helps get his rocks off scaring golfers by hiding recovered golf balls around the lake he lives in 😂 This time around Medley has an unfortunate run in with the bad guy early on who for some still unknown reason wants her and her sister. Of course she’s in for a rude awakening when reality comes calling. Medley takes to her scythe like she’s had it since birth and it was really sweet how even her mates had faith in her badassery. Then again that could have something to do with a criminal record and trashed bar 😂. Really fun series and I’m so damn glad I waited till they were all out otherwise the suspense would have killed me.

😈😇👍👍

I kinda feel like I am cheating on Delta and her guys by loving Medley and her guys so much but I can't help it. This has been an amazing series so far and I am looking forward to the last book.

Well the story continues. I love Medley she seems like the sister with the back bone. I like how Medley got her powers. I love her parents they are amazing. So in reality there are 3 of the sisters and right at the end we met the third one in a way. I like how all the guys are sort of fighting between the two groups. The biological parents are annoying but I think they are finally seeing what they have and what needs doing.

I preferred Delta’s story and guys but character wise I liked Medley. She was more mature, go with the flow and her meltdowns resulted in blackout damage. I liked how the timelines tied in and the sister bonding time. I wasn’t expecting the ending. A bit worried Sable’s story is gonna be dark but I’ll give it a go. Favourite character was Todd.

We start here by switching gears to follow Medley through her discovery of what and who she is much like Delta did in the first two books. The transition of narrators wasn't as smooth as it could've been and reads more like a series of standalones or a spin-off rather than a consistent series. I also would liked to see a hint of were the story falls on the timeline a bit sooner on in the story because I didn't realize Grave Decisions mostly ran parallel with Grave Consequences. Medley was a very distinct character and I loved that she was developed as a unique person because I've seen plenty of books that make multiples just carbon copies with a few slight differences. The accent is completely unique to her and where she was brought up. I've seen many people complain about the accent being in the entire story not just the dialogue, but nearly all books with accents have them throughout the whole book. Frankly it doesn't make sense to me personally if their inner dialogue differs from their external since people think using the same slang they speak with. I loved seeing how the different upbringings shaped each of the girls and who they are since they were each left with different families in different states. I would've liked to see more development of the relationships between Medley and the guys while still in her POV even though she seems to instantly accept things such as her origins and mates unlike Delta. Accepting they are hers doesn't mean they have a developed relationship instantly. I loved Medley's family and all of the scenes with them, including Delta. I loved the timing of the crossover between stories.

Grave Decisions is the third installment within the Hellgate Guardians series.

So, the first two books were about Delta and this one we get to meet Medley. She is Delta's sister and the complete opposite of her as well. Which is most definitely a good thing because I absolutely adored Medley. Seriously, there was nothing she could do that would annoy me. She was a complete blast the entire time. Also, her two guys?? #yummmy

We also learn lots of interesting secrets in this one. Definitely wasn't expecting another sister to be popping up but eh, I'm here for it all (I guess lol). Not sure what is going to happen next, but I can't wait to meet the next sister. Hopefully she's a mix of both? Maybe? Or just a bad ass all on her own.

While I adore Medley and her sweet Georgian charm, I still believe Delta's tale a little more. Poor Medley and her miserable job. At least she has the most amazing and understanding parents who have never lied to her and support her constantly. I love that for her. Who knew walking into a bar to deliver her last package ever was literally going to change the way she sees things and change her life. I don't admire Adler and Flint's position to catch her up and I was really annoyed with Delta and her mates, until I understood later in the book. Now, I just can't wait to see what happens after that cliffhanger!!

I was a tad confused going into this as I was kinda expecting the continuation of Delta and her demon's story. But book three continues with Medley Bell who is Delta's newly discovered twin sister from Sweetgreen Georgia. Right from the onset I found myself liking Medley, she's just so nonchalant and accepting very blase especially next to her sister. Her parents were also bloody brilliant and I adored their eccentric energy and they are more than likely a big part of the reason why Medley is super chill about her newly discovered Demon status.

Medley accepted her new role fairly swiftly determined to embrace everything including Alder and Flint who she instantly feels drawn to and safe around. When the danger surrounding her inevitably escalates Delta and Medley finally get to meet in the flesh only to then discover there are still more shocks on the horizon. With everyone now working together to locate Morax it all comes to a head in a clanger of a finale all ready for the final book in the series.

I enjoyed this a lot the chemistry between Medley Aster and Flint was scorching and the pace here was fast. I appreciated how it all slotted together and it was so heartwarming seeing the girls finally reunited and connecting as sisters. The humour was again slapstick and at times crude but my British sense of humour was definitely on board for this. I'm looking forward to the final part now and hopefully getting some closure.

I loved Delta's tale and was surprised when Book 2 felt like a FINAL book in the last chapters. When the scene finally closed, I realized that the series would continue with another sister. Considering I was invested in Delta's life, I was hesitant... but considering this is Raven Kennedy and Ivy Asher, I shouldn't have worried.

Enter Medley Bell - a tough talking Southern darling who takes punches on the chin and just keeps rolling. Honestly? I love everything about her, from her attitude to her adoptive parents, her scythe to the men she falls in love with. This story takes the events from Books 1 & 2 and builds on them, trusting that the world foundation is solid and the plot can move forward, and move forward it does. It's fantastic, and very well done.

Pros:
~Medley, Medley, Medley... she's great.
~Todd. Just Todd. I want a Todd.
~Her Adoptive Parents, the Bell's. They are wonderful! So southern it hurts and charming as all
get out.
~The way the plot weaves and blends.

Cons:
~Delta got 2 books with her as the star, and though I understand that much of that was needed
for world building and establishment, I still almost feel that Medley get the short end here.

A great continuation of a well thought out incredibly well written tale, with compelling characters, hysterical moments, heated intimacy and plenty of danger.

The story continues with Medley, told from her first person POV. I'm not sure who I loved more - - Medley, her parents, or her mates ❤️❤️❤️

While I enjoyed Delta's story (more so in book 2 when she stopped doing the panicked rabbit thing), Medley is my girl. I loved her southern twang and slang, her easy breezy nature, and how she thought through and questioned things but also trusted her gut. She always knew that she was different, and now she has a name for it and the pieces of her missing self are finding their place and making her whole.

So many moments of 😍 😂🤣 😁

I was worried that her southern manners might get her in trouble (nearly did), but she was quick to shift while still keeping a sugary sweet smile on her face. Oh! And how she insists on fixin' her own plate, against Strut's protest 🤩 Yesss, girl!!

"Holy sh*t. You're my hero." - Delta

She was quick to fall in with her demon mates, but you know what - - I loved it. They treasure her and would do anything for her. They make that clear early on. I enjoyed that their relationship was different than Delta's story - and that contrast is shown at couple of times in this book.

There's obviously an intersection of the story with Delta and her mates - - who btw I was just as annoyed with and was cheering on Flint (sorry, Jerif, I still loved you first).

Delta and Medley start to bond as sisters and everyone is still trying to deal with the Morax threat... And a new info is dropped. Book 3 ends on a cliffhanger, with the story concluding in Book 4, Grave Signs.

I think I totally like Medley more than I did Delta! Even with the southern accent (that apparently is driving reviewers nuts with the lack of g on words. LMAO).

At first I think I was mad at Iceman and co, until we realized that Medley’s story was pretty much happening almost concurrently as Delta’s. I totally like that approach- it made for a seamless transition between books 2 and 3 for me.

Anyways, I would say that you should read the books in order. And if a southern accent (usin words like “runnin”) is a trigger for you, then for goodness sakes don’t bother with the book. You’ll just end up being salty in a review. 😂

Interesting perspective

As we learn about the sister we never knew Delta had... and another info bomb dropped by mother dearest. I liked the story and liked Medley but readjn’ with a southern accent was a little on the annoyin’ side. I mean, do southerners drop the “g” like us northerners drop the r’s? Maybe I should say southernahs and northernahs? Good story and I can’t wait to hear Sable’s story. Word is she’s from New York so I can’t wait to read how that accent comes through.

I wasn't very keen on switching to a brand new fmc. It was almost a completely different story and I was super confused for the first few chapters before I decided to roll with it. The relationship building between Medley, Alder, and Flint is almost nonexistent. They go super quick into the whole mate talk. I felt there was more of a build up between Delta and Medley.
All in all, it took me a week to finish and only because I pushed myself. I lost interest and became so bored.

Very different, but SO GOOD

This was a very different way to continue the story. After following Delta's story for two books, then finding out about her sibling at the end of book 2 (a very mean cliffhanger) we're suddenly following that sibling as the new protagonist for this book! I didn't think I'd like the change, but I adored Medley! She's got an amazing personality that I felt I understood, and her family life was so wholesome and uplifting compared to poor Delta.

Funnily enough, while reading book 1 I remember thinking to myself that I hoped Flint and Alder would get a spin-off book or something. Honestly seeing them helping Medley was even better! We got to know them a lot more and they're fantastic characters.

I love that at about the 30/40% mark we join back in with Delta and the gang at the point book 2 left off, but we stayed with Medley's narration. If we'd had the whole book in Delta's perspective, I don't think I would be as attached to Medley as a character. But the way that this was written, which was a RISKY move by the authors, really worked throughout the book. I'm excited to see what the final book brings.

Disclaimer: Please remember that these are my opinions and if you feel differently, that’s okay. Thanks!

Notes: POV = 1st person, FMC
Main Characters: Medley Bell is my kind of FMC, she rolls with the punches and pretty much talks everything as it comes. Delta was cowardly and selfish in the last two books (which she admits herself) and at times it got on my nerves. Alder (MMC #1) is sweet, but kind of mediocre. Flint (MMC #2) is funny, but kind of childish. I’m so glad we don’t get any asshole love interests this time.

Side Characters: The main side characters here are Medley’s parents and they are wonderful. They are accepting and sweet and if we went off this world’s take on how the world works and what happens to souls then I would say without a doubt that these two are ready for their own worlds.

Plot/Story: This is just a continuation of the last plot while feeling like an introduction for Medley. Honestly, this book was like 400 pages and it felt like nothing happened.

Romance: I hate to say it, but just like Grave Mistakes and Grave Consequences… I’m only feeling the possibility. I like Alder and Flint, I really do; but we missed all their time together because of the time jump in the beginning of the book and it feels like it came out of nowhere. I am a big fan of the spicy scenes though; the spicy sauna scene? Wow.

Quotes I Really Like:

Overall:
I really like the events of this series but so far the romance is lack-lustre.

Ugh...WTF HAPPENED.....

What the hell happened to this series? I was expecting a continuation of Deltas story, and her finding her sister....i WAS NOT expecting a completely new story, with completely new characters. And on top of that, Medley was annoying as hell. I hated pretty much everything about this book. The "southern-ness" the authors try to bring to this book is appalling. It was absolutely horrifying to try and read with any kind of decent flow, when words were constantly missing their endings. I mean what the actual fuck? Where the hell are all the G's at the end of words? I have friends and family from the south, and they do not talk like this. It's completely ludicrous!

I feel cheated somehow. This was the first series by these authors and I was all on board with Deltas story. I loved every second of the first 2 books, I was close to clicking follow on Amazon for these authors. NOPE. not anymore. I will NOT be finishing this series. Especially after I see the last book is apparently about ANOTHER NEW CHARACTER! Nope I'm done. Thanks for ruining a series imo.

I won't be reading anything else by these authors. This was just too ridiculous for a first try at new authors.

My biggest issue with this book was I felt like there were NO scenes to built the relationship between Medley and the guys. They’re throwing around the ‘mate’ word and I’m like ‘what in the damn hell’ y’all don’t know each other well enough for that, y’all be crazy. Then I remembered they had known each other for a couple weeks (still crazy fast, but *shrug*) we just hadn’t seen like ANY of those scenes. You know those books you’re like all filler and no plot? This was the opposite. Hell of a lot of plot and basically no relationship building. At 68% I felt almost like the author had built Medleys relationship with Delta better than that with the guys and Delta had just been introduced! This is why I didn’t give it five stars. It lost three stars there.

On another note what is with all the reviewers complaint about the dropping of the ‘g’s? First three reviews currently up all mention it. Two gave it one star cause they disliked it SO much. The other gave the book five stars but said they found the southern aspects and ‘g’ dropping comical. I wanna make clear during what I’m about to say that yeah the gator is clearly comical and unrealistic. The rest of the the talking and everything else wasn’t really over the top. The talking was pretty accurate to talk from the country too. I talked real similar to this, but without the ‘ain’t’s cause my mama was not a fan of that word cause she thought it made us sound uneducated before I left for college. Then in grad school I watered it down a lot because I was worried about being judged by the way I sounded. I didn’t want to present my research and people subconsciously dock me intelligence points for the way I sounded.

Honestly, I feel like y’all are kinda being judgey. I would really appreciate someone explaining what the big issue is with the speaking. I talk like that. I still drop all my ‘g’s. I still say things like ‘not to beat a dead horse’ and ‘a burr under my saddle’ super frequently. I think in a voice pretty similar to Medleys. What is y’alls deal with this? Maybe it’s brining up my old insecurities from the way that I speak that I had back in grad school, but I feel like y’all are being real harsh to poor Medley (and the authors).

Not to end on an aggressive note, but to anyone wondering why I write all my ‘g’s then it’s because that’s proper English and school taught me to write that way (also autocorrect is not a fan of the good old ‘g’ dropping. It’s really not. Seriously, try to text it. Your iPhone WILL autocorrect it. Totally not even worth the fight.) I talk and think that way though so I found it refreshing. Go represent Medley. Good for you girl. Don’t let worry about people being all judgey change you the way I let it change me. (Yes I know she a fictional character, but I really don’t want her to feel any pressure from hell or new societal pressures to change her. It sucks.)

On a final final note (for real this time) I’m going to say the southern ‘g’ dropping that bothered so many is why I’m giving it the third of three stars. I feel like authors worry about readers getting mad about the ‘g’ dropping etc. and so they don’t write a book like this very often. Thanks for writing one.

RH/Demons & Angels

SYNOPSIS (Books 1&2): Note that whilst there are 4 books in this series the 3rd and 4th book are about a different character but continue the story so they are not standalone duets but do deal with two different sets of couples. This is the usual story of an FC who thought she was human but discovers that she is not, that there are a lot of people after her and she is a big part of saving the world. The FC applies for a job as a security guard which turns out to be for securing one of Hell’s gates. As a result she meets 4 demons (the MCs) and discovers she is not human. Books 1 & 2 cover the FC discovering exactly who and what she is and her heritage as well as developing the relationship with the MCs. It ends on a cliffhanger with the story (but different lead characters) continuing in book 3.

I am a huge fan of Ivy Asher and I can only think that the disappoint I have with these books is due to Raven Kennedy’s involvement (sorry Raven). Whilst the humour and “sassy” heroine are not too bad and there are funny moments I have to agree with other reviewers that the FC is just annoying. She’s whiny and self oriented as well as generally pathetic and cowardly. Whilst this improves slightly in Book 2 she is, unfortunately, not a great kickass heroine as Ivy Asher’s characters are from the Sentinel series.

The relationships with the MCs feel rushed with no real understanding as to why the MCs would be attracted to someone as superficial as the FC. The FC also just seems to have a one track mind when it comes to sex and is obsessed by it. This becomes wearing after a while. Whilst a few comments are amusing or understandable the FC just cannot seem to get her mind out of the gutter. Finally, once the FC starts to have sex with the MCs, in line with her mind being constantly in the gutter, the sex scenes just become too much and some just too long. They are not badly written and are relatively hot, just too many.

Finally, and as mentioned by other reviewers, nothing much really happens in these books until the end of each. They drag and could easily be condensed into one book. I started book 3 - which is when I realised it was about a different set of characters. The lead FC seems a little bit better than Delta but not much. She also seems to be obsessed by sex and cannot go a page without referring to it either though and also comes across as a bit annoying and stupid.

I’ve stopped at book 3. The story just hasn’t engaged me and I cannot get invested in the characters. It’s a shame as it had potential.

Wowsa! So Grave Decisions brings us a new heroine to focus on, Medley. It also brings back Alder and Flint, and I love them. Medley and her Mama and Daddy are absolutely precious. Their close relationship is wonderful to read, and their ready acceptance is pretty refreshing. Medley learning about her new reality and how she fits in a new family of sorts was full of laughter, and I really enjoy her confidence and self assured attitude. The overall arc of the series is progressed nicely, and I’m so anxious to see how the next installment brings it all together. I’m glad that this is rapid releasing because these cliffhangers are real humdingers. Can’t wait to see how this plays out in book 4!
*Thoughts on accents: I’m not trying to disrespect anyone’s opinion on realistic southern accents. The dropping of the “g” from half the words was a little distracting at first, but by the end I didn’t notice it so much. I drop a lot of “g’s” from words in my regular conversation. I actually stopped and paid more attention to my own accent, and I have come to the conclusion that it’s entirely realistic. I think maybe what’s throwing people off is that you speak that way, but you don’t write that way. An accent is not a practiced thing, it’s just the way you unconsciously speak. You’re surrounded by people that sound similar to you so you only really notice it when someone else has an accent that’s different or extra. So when you read it deliberately written that way, in your mind it’s exaggerated and over-the-top. If someone was to transcribe my conversations exactly as I say them, I’ve no doubt they would read exactly like Medley’s. It’s also used to great comedic effect, especially when paired with the more unrealistic aspects (fetch playing alligator).
**I edited my review to better convey my thoughts. I felt like my previous review wasn’t quite right, and have adjusted accordingly. My original was written at 1 am, and I felt my thoughts were a little jumbled.

This is a good one.

Y'all, I'm in South Georgia about 2 hours west of the setting in this book. This book was absolutely hilarious. I laughed the entire time I read. Melody's character was like a fresh cool breeze across my face. I absolutely loved this character. It's not often that I stumble across a book set in GA especially southern GA. While to some it may seem like they go a little far in all the southern sayings, they really don't. You really have to keep in mind the character. Melody lives in a very tiny town, they tend to be more country, and she also live in a trailer park. Quite frankly, I expect her to be as country as she is. The sayings make sense for her character. I know that the book was recently changed, I really wish I could have read it beforehand. Raven and Ivy put a lot into this character. Their search history has got to be funny.
I full on love how Melody just takes everything in stride and her mama and daddy as well. Mr. and Mrs. Bell had wonderful personalities. And Todd? Good lord that was the funniest thing I've ever read. I really feel like I need a Todd in my life. There are jaw dropping revelations in this book. If you are mulling over whether or not to read this one, just stop, read it. You will laugh a lot.
Personally I think Ivy and Raven did a fantastic job on this book and with Melody's character.

I did not expect an entirely new character to be the focus of the story though considering the ending of book two, the authors left some hints as to a change of direction in the story. I was caught a bit off guard with the new FMC at first, but as I kept reading, the plot fell to place and eventually the connection with the characters from books one and two came into place.

I liked M. as she is quite feisty and speaks her mind. In a way, her reaction towards some of the revelations was rather more mature than her sister's, so in that respect I liked her character.
What really kept me turning the pages was all the Annuli abilities, the demonic nature of the heroes and of course, the genuine connections that the characters develop as the plot thickens. Loved the instant connections that the sisters had with each other despite the fact that they had never met before, they got along from the start like a house on fire.

This third book offers more surprises and at least now I am aware of what to expect with the next book. I have to agree with some of the reviews here that I was rather hesitant at first, due to the POV’s change, but eventually the story worked for me.
