A beautiful and uplifting collection of heartfelt, hand-lettered full-color artwork and soothing messages that provide compassion and connection for everyone feeling overwhelmed in their lives.
All of This is for You is balm for anyone feeling lost and detached from today’s confusing, hectic world. In her luminous four-color hand-lettered artwork and accompanying heartfelt notes, acclaimed illustrator Ruby Jones reminds us that even when times are tough, it remains important to be kind and gentle with ourselves and those around us. Jones received worldwide recognition after she posted an illustration of two women—one of them a Muslim wearing a hijab—embracing after the 2019 Christchurch terrorist attacks. The image was accompanied by an extraordinary message of empathy and "This is your home and you should have been safe here." A beacon of hope and kindness, All of This is for You is for every one of us, because no matter the individual issue—whether it’s self-image, identity, depression, grief, or anxiety—we all struggle with challenges. Jones's gentle illustrations and soothing insights are a breath of fresh air during tough times, and a reminder of humanity's inherent and enduring goodness.
Ruby Jones is a New Zealand-based illustrator who works primarily in digital form. Her work has appeared on the cover of Time magazine and online in BuzzFeed, i-D, Vogue, and Marie Claire. All Of this Is for You is her first book.
In a Nutshell: A collection of affirmations presented through some powerful illustrations. Not exactly my type of book, but a great option for those who enjoy self-help and inspirational works.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As the tagline suggests, this promises to be a little book of kindness. Of comfort. Of strengthening and inspiring advice one needs to hear while battling life’s lows. (Or while listening to the news these days.) As a compilation of some impactful and thought-provoking affirmations, this book does all this and more.
The author's little note at the start explains how the book came into being. The rest of the book is a mix of affirmations and illustrations.
The book seems hefty at 128 pages, but the affirmations are probably on just a third of those pages. The rest are just positive, mood-boosting, heart-touching illustrations. As such, it is a very quick read for those who wish to go cover to cover. But such books are best read when opened at random and you treat the affirmation on the open page as your thought for the day, get your boost of motivational energy, and face the world just a little bit brighter and stronger.
The affirmations are excellent, I give you that. Many of the inclusions are of ideas we already know but forget during tougher times. It’s good to have a book refresh our memory for morale boosters such as “Nothing is gonna be perfect but everything is gonna be okay.”
The full-colour illustrations are decent enough. Not exactly in my kind of style, but some of the graphics stand out.
On those who enjoy motivational quotations or self-help books, this book might create a much better impact. I am not a fan of the inspirational nonfiction genre, even when it comes packaged in a graphic comic format. So my feelings about this compilation are somewhat muted.
As such, I wouldn’t pay to purchase such a book, despite the excellent affirmations it contains; it is just not for me. But to the right reader, this would make a worthy gift.
Recommended to those interested in self-help or inspirational nonfiction presented in an artistic format.
3 stars.
The book opens with this excellent, timely affirmation. I shall close my review with it: "This can all feel overwhelming sometimes. It won't be like this forever."
I was gifted this beautiful little book of kindness by a dear friend. It is lovely and uplifting and inspirational (and will be going into a lot of Xmas presents this year). Ruby Jones came to the worlds attention with her beautiful words ”this is your home and you should have been safe here " accompanying a simple image of two NZ women of different cultures embracing after the Christchurch terror attack. Since then she has gone on to illustrate the cover of Time Magazine and just published this little book which I hope goes on to be just as massive!
A balm for the soul, but in book form. I love its theme about self-love, self-care as well as being kind to yourself and one another. There's just something about the simple but beautiful illustrations that make this book feel even more calming. Perfect for the hard days or when you just need some comfort ❤️
Huge thank you to @tlcbooktours & @williammorrowbooks for our gifted review copy of ALL OF THIS IS FOR YOU by @rubyalicerose When I read the cover and see this is “A Little Book of Kindness” I brace myself for toxic positivity. I’m happy to say this book is endearing, touching and memorable with no hint of toxic positivity! Let’s just say I got about page 5 before I feel the tears set in. The inspiration for this book are the terror attacks on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. The author’s hope is to “give a voice to those tender moments in life that we sometimes hold close and murmur about only about to ourselves: our dreams, fears, hopes, loves, losses.” For many of us, life is a never ending cycle of grief, fear & worry. This is a small but impactful book with touching illustrations and heartfelt anecdotes, encouragement and affirmations. I’ve included a few photos of some of the pages that truly speak to me. I think this is a book one can open and get something out of each and every page. For me, that is incredibly valuable.
Ich lese sehr gerne solche kleinen Bücher, die etwas Positives, mutmachendes und inspiriertes haben. Angereichert wird dies dann durch Fotografien oder Zeichnungen, welche die Sprüche, Verse etc. untermauern. Und so kam ich um All das ist für dich nicht herum.
Durch das feste und dicke Cover ist das Buch haptisch angenehm und die Cover Gestaltung ist auch stimmig. Kurz um, es macht auch von außen was her, da man solche Bücher gerne verschenkt, finde ich dies ist ein Pluspunkt.
Auch von innen ist es schön gestaltet, wobei ich sagen muss, dass mich der Zeichenstil nun nicht von Hocker haut. Aber da hat ja jeder individuelle Vorlieben. Auf jeden Fall passen die Bilder zu den jeweiligen Texten und untermalen diese. Schön finde ich, dass sich in den gezeichneten Personen auch die Diversität widerspiegelt, für die die Autorin sich stark macht.
Die Sprüche sind gut gewählt und machen Mut, Hoffnung, beruhigen aber auch. Es ist ein kleines Mutmachbuch, welches einen daran erinnert, dass es auch wieder bessere Zeiten geben wird. Im Vergleich mit anderen Büchern in dieser Kategorie, fand ich manche Sprüche aber nicht so gut, vielleicht ist aber auch der besondere Touch durch die Übersetzung verloren gegangen, das kann ich nicht beurteilen.
Natürlich ist dies auch wieder ein persönliches Empfinden, doch manchmal war es mir zu platt, besser kann ich es nicht benennen. Da hätte ich mir mehr Inspiration gewünscht. So hat mich, "Der Junge, der Maulwurf, der Fuchs und das Pferd", ein Buch, welches ich als so ähnlich betitel würde, tief bewegt und es hallt immer noch nach. Was ich von diesem Büchlein hier leider nicht behaupten kann. Damit will ich nicht sagen, dass es schlecht ist. Doch sticht es für mich nicht aus der Maße solcher Bücher heraus.
This is a beautiful wee book of sentiments and it's delightful.
I kinda want to rip up the pages and frame a bunch of sentiments! Instead it's on its way to a friend who needs to know how much she matters to the world.
"Nothing can prepare us for people leaving early. Grief will come in waves. But the waves will subside and the sun will rise".
The illustrations in this book was the author's immediate response to the terror attacks at two mosques in Christchurch, so you can expect nothing biased whatsoever in it and it has the representation regardless what religions, races or ethnicity, and even gender you are. Its just love and acceptance towards yourself and others, and connecting with the people and also nature.
My takeaways from this beautiful book : - With love and compassion towards ourselves & others, for the places we call home & for this earth, we can live through this challenging time. - Pause, and look outside, enjoy the little things and not worry about anything for a while is a good practice for mental health. - Self acceptance, mentally or physically is hard, but we are worth it. - Only follow people who made your heart sing and do the things that make you feel like YOU.
"Your existence is someone's sunshine every single day".
If you haven't talked to someone you love and care for quite sometimes for whatever reason it is and you wanted to reconnect, this is undoubtedly the best gift, especially during this pandemic. People lost their loved ones, they even almost their own lives and the right words do heal.
Meine Meinung Klein aber Oho trifft es hier meiner Meinung nach fast am besten. Dieses kleine Buch versteckt so viel Gefühl, so viele Hoffnungen, so viele gute Worte, dass man diese gar nicht alle auf einmal erfassen kann.
Es ist ein Buch für gute und schlechte Tage. Es ist ein Buch, das man immer wieder gerne aufschlägt, darin rumblättert, Sätze liest und die Bilder auf sich wirken lässt.
Mir gefällt der Stil der Zeichnungen und ich habe mir auch die Instagram Seite der Künstlerin angesehen. Diese ist voll solcher Bilder, doch ich finde gedruckt in einem Buch sind sie nochmals viel schöner!
Besonders in der heutigen Zeit finde ich solche Kunst sehr wichtig. Sie zeigt auf, das wir alle gleich sind. Im Herzen. Und das wir uns endlich als eine grosse Menschenfamilie ansehen sollten. Manche Wörter muntern auf, andere stärken, manche machen etwas traurig aber alle Wörter berühren.
Schreibstil & Cover Der Schreibstil ist vielleicht etwas zu kurz, um ihn wirklich beurteilen zu können. Doch die kurzen Sätze sind wirklich sehr treffend und berührend. Das Cover wie auch alle Zeichnungen im Buch sind einfach nur wundervoll!
Fazit Ein richtig schönes Buch zum Verschenken oder selbst darin stöbern. Es lässt sich super leicht in einem Rutsch durchlesen aber meiner Meinung nach wirkt es am besten in Häppchen. Ein Herzbuch, das ich sehr gerne weiter empfehle!
I feel like I should keep this small treasure with me at all times. It is calming and grounding. It is sweet and validating. Anyone who likes positive affirmations will adore this book. It is simple and perfect. The illustrations are adorable. This is just a wonderful book.
A small piece of perfection - simple messages that pack a punch and resonate absolutely. I do hope people buy this for their school libraries too as these are important messages for our rangitahi.
Do you know why this isn’t a huge book of kindness? Because there are only so many cliches out there, but whatever is there was definitely used in the making of this book. Every trite tshirt slogan, every yogi wannabe motto, all of it. And it all began with a well timed well placed well intentioned cartoon in the wake of the New Zealand’s 2019 terrorist attack. Time magazine cashed in on the trend and that must have given the author the idea there’s a book in this. There isn’t, though. This isn’t a book, this is a drawn out postcard that wants to serve as a comforting blankie, but the comfort it offers is…well, it’s like wrapping oneself up in a postcard. I don’t for a second question the author’s excellent save the world through love and kindness intentions…I disapprove of the method of delivery. I disapprove of the ridiculous popular zeitgeist of comforting cliches and millennial infused blend of individual specialness (and yes, it’s ok to blame Mr. Rogers, another well intentioned misguided soul) and the sheer ludicrousness of the notion of finding solace in a slogan. This book doesn’t have a single original thought or idea in it, not a one, nothing you wouldn’t find on an inspirational poster or a meme or something. Who and how and why would be inspired by this love yourself, take time for yourself, it’s ok to be yourself crap? Seriously? If you don’t already know these things for yourself and need a tiny book of imitation kindness to tell you…well, that’s just sad. Also, not a sort of thing one should learn from a book. Especially a book like that. There is a certain mentality for which this is suited. Someone who enjoys daytime tv, avoids news, likes color pink, cutesy things, crafts aggressively, thinks positive thoughts aggressively, possibly believes in The Secret. For all others, no amount of bright bland cartoons is going to make up for the fact that this book has nothing to offer and in fact does the notion of kindness a disservice by equating it with twee words, when in fact, like love, it should be a verb, an action. Anyone who has ever been on a receiving end of a genuine act of kindness I’d think would agree.
Beautifully illustrated encouraging statements to help readers move through difficult times. The affirming text is supported by simple illustrations that provide light. A charming book to share with those struggling with so many different issues.
Ruby Jones hat mit "All das ist für dich" ein Buch der Zuversicht geschaffen. Die Künstlerin hat inspirierende Botschaften mit wundervollen und einzigartigen Illustrationen kombiniert und feiert so die Menschheit. Es geht um Träume, Hoffnung, Ängste und Verlust. Wertschätzung, unabhängig von deinem Geschlecht, deiner Herkunft, deiner Religion oder deiner sexuellen Orientierung. All das ist für dich, ist ein tolles Buch für einen regnerischen Tag Zuhause, oder zum Verschenken an eine besondere Person. Ein wahres Herzensbuch.
Thank you, HarperOne, for sending me a copy of this book! It's a breath of fresh air and provides the much-needed positivity and inspiration to keep going, reach out to the people you love, and remember how loved you are!
All das ist für dich: Das kleine Buch der Zuversicht - Ruby Jones
»Ich hoffe, dass du in diesem Buch immer eine Seite findest, die dich anspricht – egal wie es dir gerade geht.« ― Ruby Jones
Ich war sehr gespannt auf dieses Büchlein, wusste ich doch, so muss ich leider gestehen, nichts mit dem Namen Ruby Jones anzufangen.
Als ich es dann aber bekam und das erste Bild sah, kamen mir nicht nur die Tränen, sondern ich wusste sofort worum es sich handelte.
Ruby Jones ist eine junge Autorin aus Wellington, Neuseeland deren Botschaften voller Hoffnung und Güte sind. Sie erlangte weltweite Bekanntheit, als sie nach den Terroranschlägen von Christchurch im März 2019 eine Zeichnung postete auf der sich zwei Frauen umarmen, unterschrieben mit den Worten
>>This is your home and you should have been safe here >>
Es gibt Bücher, die sich anfühlen wie eine Umarmung. Rubys tröstende Botschaft lautet: Auch wenn das Leben manchmal nicht einfach ist, so sind wir doch nie allein, und die Dinge, die wir miteinander teilen, sind so viel zahlreicher als die, die uns zu trennen scheinen
»Ruby Jones Bilder sagen mehr als tausend Worte. Sie erreichen Menschen in allen Ländern der Welt.« Stuff New Zealand
»DAS LEBEN IST NICHT LEICHT. NIMM DIR SO VIEL ZEIT WIE DU BRAUCHST .« ― Ruby Jones
Im Vorwort schreibt Ruby, dass sie versuchen möchte all jenen sensiblen Menschen eine Stimme zu geben. Dem kann ich mich nur anschließen, und euch dieses Buch ans Herz legen. Lasst euch davon umarmen.
Audiobook review: Story – Performance – 5 Overall –
I honestly don’t know how to rate this.
This is an extremely short audiobook but I received a copy for review and knew going in that it would be short. It has a very affirming message and the words and narration were very soothing.
I can’t really, in good conscience, recommend the audiobook because I just can’t justify the cost of it for something that is only 10 minutes long. I’ve looked at reviews for the book and apparently it has a lot of hand drawn illustrations. There really isn’t any way to translate illustrations into audio.
If you’re looking for something with a soothing and life-affirming message, I recommend you check out the book and skip the audio unless you can get it through your local library system.
Based on my above comments, I’m declining to assign a rating to the book itself but I can definitely recommend the narrator.
A complimentary copy of this audiobook was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author and/or narrator.
All of This Is For You reads like you are getting those much needed words by or affirmation and encouragement from someone who not only cares for you, but cares for you heart. It isn’t just a pep talk - it feels much more personal. Its starts with a note to the reader about how the book came to be, and how it’s center is focused on human connection (even more so during this pandemic). The artwork is amazing and captures many of the beautiful people who make up this world. I enjoyed the diversity of the people represented on the pages. Some pages have none or very little text, and others are a longer message.
If you enjoyed The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse I think you would also appreciate these encouraging notes.
This would also make a great gift! We all go through various ups and downs, and this book is a wonderful reminder that we aren’t alone.
I was gifted a copy from HarperOne Books in exchange for an honest review.
This book is exactly what I needed right now. As in, I honestly couldn’t have written a book better suited to what I needed to hear after the last month of my life. With no more than 15 words on a page and cute little drawings, this book was the perfect little reminder that life is going to suck sometimes, and that’s perfectly okay. What matters most is that we allow ourselves to feel that hurt, that grief, that sadness, and then we turn to the activities that will help us refuel and return to ourselves again. Jones reminds us in such a simple way that we can’t control what happens to us, but we can remember to care for ourselves and remind ourselves that it’s okay to not be okay. An absolutely stellar little book, and I’ll probably end up buying myself a copy so I can flip through when everything feels impossible.
All of This Is for You is just perfection. Good things really do come in small packages. Ruby Jones creates a book of inspiring and uplifting messages with outstanding and moving illustrations. Everyone could use this book right now. It reminds you that no matter what you are going through or struggling with you are loved and will be okay. I think it will also remind so many of us that we aren't alone in our struggles.
I give All of This Is for You 5 stars. This book provides instant gratification with its dazzling messages and encouraging words of wisdom. I will keep this book with me and look to it whenever I am feeling stressed or anxious. Absolutely loved this book and think that so many others will too.
It’s funny how a book that originally came out in NZ in 2019 can become even more relevant upon its US release in 2021. Living in a country that has had the highest number of cases and deaths from COVID-19, it is so easy to feel hopeless. As an Asian American specifically, to read this book a year into countless xenophobic hate crimes and within days after the shooting in Atlanta, picking this book felt like the right time to do so; to assure me that there is kindness and there is hope in all that is to come.
Sudah lama tidak membaca buku dengan ilustrasi. Lebih tepatnya buku ini adalah ilustrasi dengan kutipan dari penulis. Hal yang menarik buku ini ditulis setelah insiden yang terjadi di New Zealand tahun 2019 tentang teror di masjid. Sebuah latar belakang yang menarik. Selain itu, ilustrasinya juga menggambarkan keberagaman karena ada juga beberapa tokoh yang menggunakan jilbab. Membaca buku ini membuat saya sadar bahwa memang sekarang sudah zamannya bisa mengelola dan mengoptimalkan keberagaman, tidak justru mempertegas perbedaan.
All of This Is For You was originally published in NZ in 2019 and hit the US in March of 2021. This books is a little dose of what the doctor ordered for this pandemic we have been living in this last year. It’s filled with all the things you need ... compassion, love and kindness. We could all use a little kindness. This quick picture book is the hug you didn’t know you needed. Plus the beautiful illustrations are an added bonus.
This book is absolutely delightful. Multiple times while reading it I flipped the page and broke out into a smile. The images are simple but spoke to my heart. A great little book to keep around the house and give as a gift. I also appreciated the diversity of people represented. It really feels like a hug from humankind.
This is supposed to be a book for self love. Self care. The graphics aren’t for looks. I think it’s supposed to go with the little sayings or words of encouragement. It’s not bias or anything. It just wants the reader to be happy in their life.
This was gifted to me during a tough time. I loved it- and I loved that I could add things onto the blank pages to personalize it and make it even more special when re-gifting it to someone who needs to hear these words more than I do now. It’s inclusive and thoughtful and uplifting.
