Integrating the wisdom of the ancient sages with modern science, Jason Gregory explains how world-class artists and athletes reach peak performance--and how you, too, can harness this “lifestyle technology” to make your actions effortless, enjoy intelligent spontaneity, and reach optimal performance at a peak level. Drawing on modern cognitive science, Gregory explains dual process theory, which divides mental activity into two cold cognition, analogous with rational thought, and hot cognition, based on emotional intuition--a theory anticipated by ancient Eastern thought, especially the teachings of the Chinese sages. The author explains that peak performance is impossible to achieve by relying solely on cold cognition as it cuts you off from the energy reserves necessary to excel. He shows how the athletic concept of being “in the zone” is based on practices that have become energized by hot cognition and thus instinctive.
Outlining a structured training system that blends hot and cold cognition, the author identifies four fundamental habits and routines that lay the foundation for a healthy embodied mind and mindful body and thus are essential for developing peak performance and success. He explains how these training methods are practical applications of ancient wisdom from Zen and Taoist traditions, such as wu-wei, as well as how they are supported by recent medical research. Building on the four fundamentals, he offers practices for cultivating physical and mental intelligence, fasting the mind, and harnessing creativity to achieve your desires.
Gregory explains how, with regular practice, we can use the four fundamentals to create masterpiece days. And, as the masterpiece days compound, you build an unstoppable momentum where success is inevitable.
Jason Gregory is an author, philosopher, and teacher with expertise primarily in Eastern philosophy and spirituality, with a deep-rooted background in Western philosophy, comparative religion, psychology, cognitive science, metaphysics, and ancient cultures, as he seamlessly bridges the gap between ancient wisdom and contemporary understanding.
With over 15 years of dedicated teaching, Jason has enriched countless lives by sharing the wisdom gained from his immersive journeys to the remote corners of Asia, resulting in numerous published works. He is the author of several books, including Spiritual Freedom in the Digital Age, Emotional Intuition for Peak Performance, Effortless Living, Fasting the Mind, Enlightenment Now, and The Science and Practice of Humility. Moreover, he is the creator behind several enlightening documentaries, including The Art of Effortless Living, Effortless Action: The Art of Spontaneity, The Yugas: The Great Time Cycles of the Universe, The Art of Letting Go, and The Art of Synchronicity.
At the heart of Jason’s endeavors lies a deep and enduring connection with the spiritual traditions of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Taoism. He has delved into the roots of these traditions for almost two decades, immersing himself in their meditative practices and gleaning insights that defy conventional understanding. These experiences have not only enriched his personal journey but have also become the cornerstone of his teachings. His teachings resonate with the timeless echoes of ancient wisdom while addressing the unique challenges of our modern era. By fusing profound insights with practical guidance, he empowers individuals to embody the essence of Eastern philosophy and cultivate lives of authenticity, purpose, and inner peace.
I was champing at the bit to read Jason's new book and he definitely did not disappoint. This book is a great sequel to Effortless Living. He goes into the finest details about meditation and other lifestyle choices such as sleep which I found profound. I didn't know about the science of sleep and I'm no spring chicken. I just loved it and think it is a essential book for Taoists and anyone interested in Wu Wei.
Emotional Intuition for Peak Performance by Jason Gregory thoroughly analyzes what it means for us to reach our peak performance and our very best. From exploring how our SNS and PSNS work, the difference between our hot and cold cognition systems, exploring the benefits of sleep, exercise, and diet, and providing several good meditation practices, Jason Gregory covers everything a beginner needs to start owning his life truly.
Jason Gregory also discusses Chinese and Hindu philosophy quite a bit and how they come into play. Providing accounts on both Chuang Zhu, and Lao Tzu, and discussing the nature of Samskaras, Vasanaas, and Karma briefly. Naturally, I'd wish for the book to continue and explore the topic of reaching peak performance but I did get enough information to do my own research.
This book really shows Jason's versatility as a writer. He has done an amazing job again at blending the nondual teachings with modern science. After reading this I read Fast the Mind again and both just go together perfectly. I've learned so much from him over the years and I am eagerly awaiting his next book.
