Kritika Letterarja tal-Professur Oliver Friggieri
L-isfida ewlenija li għandu l-kittieb letterarju fi żmienna tmiss sewwasew lill-identità tiegħu bħala narratur – minn ġurnalista sa xandar, minn novellier sa rumanzier. L-irrakkuntar, ġeneru bikri li ħareġ minn fi ħdan il-prożaturi u l-poeti klassiċi, spiċċa biex maż-żmien sar tipiku tal-bniedem f’kull imġiba differenti tiegħu, li biha jesprimi u jikkomunika, jaħseb u jbiddel lil ħsiebu f’kelma, li hi ħoss li jrodd tifsira.

Your book comprises a story that runs parallel to the narratives found in the New Testament Gospels but which contains many details which are not to be found in the latter. What do you have to say about this?
As you are perfectly aware, every novel needs to adopt a particular literary style and this is crucial if it is to be a reflection of the theme of the book. In the case of The Secret Gospel of Jesus, I needed to maintain the identical style used in the Gospels so that the reader would be able to relate to the text more easily. As for the many details that you are referring to, I would like to emphasise the fact that I did not just make up these specific details using my imagination. They are all based on, and in some cases actually copied verbatim from Gnostic Gospels and other historical, Christian and ancient documents which for political and theological reasons were put aside or almost completely destroyed by those who did not wish to have certain facts revealed. Proof of this can be found in the fact that the 27 books of the New Testament represent but an extremely minute fraction of the Christian literature that was produced in the first three centuries after Jesus's time. These Gospels are known as Apocrypha: sacred texts that were highly revered by the earliest of communities and for this reason, many of these details are included in this novel too so that the reader could thoroughly comprehend Jesus's humanity just as he realistically was. I say this because in reality, in the New Testament Gospels we come across Jesus as a rather psychologically incomplete person, in the sense that in these texts he never smiles, laughs or jokes with his friends - how could this be possible? In addition, we are not told anything about what he did in his free time and whether he did any travelling in his life and if so, where to. It is only logical to ask, did Jesus's life consist only of what is written in the New Testament?...

Before reading Paceville, I consulted the literary criticism that Profs. Oliver Friggieri wrote for this novel. He focused on the subtle literary techniques in the narrative that might be overlooked, misunderstood, or undervalued without a professional explanation. His analysis also showed his appreciation for Anton Sammut’s many literary achievements.
Mr. Sammut clearly enjoys and feels comfortable in the entertainment hub of Malta - Paceville. His distinctive character traits are his witty and intelligent humor and his keen sense of observation that allows him to see beyond the surface of things. The story is unique because it is told from the point of view of an author who is also a great artist, so he can enrich the narrative elements with his creative flair. I felt like I was always there with him as he explored the nightlife of Paceville and encountered the diverse and sometimes quirky characters that populate the entertainment world of Paceville and his own life.
In this autobiographical novel, Mr. Sammut also revealed deeper aspects of his personality, especially in the powerful short story called The Garden of Love. Paceville u Lil Hinn Minnu is a unique autobiography of an author and an artist, that knows exactly when it's time for entertainment and also when it's time for profound introspection.
An enjoyable read! An insight into the Maltese nightlife scenario whereby young people mingle and interact socially - with the impact on characters and life styles! The author ably invest in elevating the psycho-social needs of those frequenting such entertainment spheres and manage to go personal, individual and 'real'! An orchestration of experiences that mark one's life! This book is valid for both young and those 'young at heart' as it shed insights into the youth sphere which goes beyond the geographic commercial area geared to attract nightlife with high lucrative income. Makes an interesting read in various strata of life. Will definitely read it again in the not far distant future, as I am sure I will be able to delve into insights I have missed in my first read!

There's a brief passage towards the end of the book which describes the open area at the top of the infamous Paceville steps. The narrator has just left a club at the top of the stairs, and is looking at the square in front of him, at around one in the morning. It's brief, but he manages to capture some of the feel of Paceville, the craziness, the ugliness.
Unfortunately, the rest of the book fails to do the same, and long, distracting sequences of it are devoted to irrelevant tangents, or conversations taking place in hotel lobby settings (maybe the Intercontinental), that could have taken place in any hotel in the world. I appreciate that the title includes 'Lil Hinn Minnu', but these passages still ruin the flow of the the slight narrative, and do not add much.
I found much of the dialogue, situations, timeline and even the actions of most of the secondary characters to be very unrealistic. The incessant and exaggerated use of English words, even when the Maltese word would flow much better in the dialogue, and would be used by even the most 'pepe' of individuals, was also very annoying.
The idea of the novella is a good and interesting one, but I found the execution lacking.
