Mr. West

Rate this book
Dakota was a finalist on the Invest in the Best television show and she could nearly clutch the victory in her grasp. Except one judge blocked her way to success with his callous and arrogant -- 'No'.

After giving him some choice words, everything that Dakota knew as life, changed.

Years later, she runs into that same judge and cannot believe he has the dirty nerve to speak. Her life had completely shifted since the last time they saw each other, but that did not erase her hatred for the man.
No.
If anything, it made it worse.

I love it when a businesswoman succeeds.
Jonah was a good hero, who recognized her genius and knew what he wanted.

They should have collected back child support from that loser, tho. He owes the heroine for abandoning her and then coming back to ruin her life.

Mr. Jonah West meets Dakota Bowers when he shoots down her ideas (too narrowly focused) and declines to invest in her business on a Shark Tank inspired reality show. She promises to be a success anyway and her passion tells him, he'll be seeing her again in the future. That future is three years later when they have a brief encounter on a New York sidewalk. He asks about her product and he asks her to call him to discuss her product in detail. Dakota can't forget or forgive him and her daughter Ella isn't a fan of his either.

Never calling him doesn't matter because fate intervenes and Mr. West takes it upon himself to grab her attention in a spectacular way. He forces her to rebirth her dream and a partnership is formed. Will she succeed or will she allow a negative force from her past to derail the rebirth?

If you know anything about this author, she knows how to write Alpha males that will melt your Kindle with their soliloquies and Mr. West is no different. Recommended: Read It!

I'm hoping Cano gets a story because he needs to believe in love again. I'd love to see how he transitions from a bitter divorced man, to a man open again to the possibilities of love. Now--there is something mentioned in the story about Ella and Casey so I'm hoping to read their love story that takes place twenty years later.

This story ends at 75 percent.

Sneak Peek at Eli (Across the Aisle Series) I'm highly anticipating this one. Yum! Yum!
Sneak Peek at Tony & Ida (Stetson Series)
Sneak Peek at Mr. Vega (Prelude + Chapter One)
Sneak Peek at Leaving Fletch

Ok read 3.5 stars

I realize that each book is different, however one thing that I expect from all is a multilayered plot. Mr West felt rather formulaic. Even the sex scenes felt flat. I didn’t appreciate Dakota’s rudeness on the show. She went on a rant which might work for reality tv but not so much if you’re looking for an investor. She’s supposed to be really innovative, a go getter and hard working , however it didn’t come through the pages. For instance I would have appreciated it more if she hustled in the evening and at the weekend during the 5 years after the show. Tried to push her idea more even if she failed time and time again. Maybe start small. Basically, Jonah had to force her to accomplish her dreams and pay for it. As for Jonah, apart from the rant, it wasn’t well explained why he turned her down during the show. The complexity of having a relationship with basically your employer/investor was barely touched upon. The nonsense with Sammy was really easily dealt with. I understand wanting to connect the different books but the circumstances felt forced-a random coffee shop in Manhattan really? As for Vega and Cano I don’t really remember them from Mr Vega however in that book Mr Vega was called Logan while here he is called Noah. Editing issues? Even Ella, as sweet as she was, wasn’t as endearing/interesting as Casey. For instance, I would imagine that a 5 year old would question who her father was ask why her mother didn’t have any friends etc..

2.50 Stars. (BW/WM). An Audible audiobook read by Troy Duran and Mari. Disjointed. Unlikable heroine. No chemistry between protagonists. The hero, Jacob West, is the highly sort after head of a multi billionaire investment corporation. The heroine, Dakota Bowers, is a defensive, vulgar, rude and mouthy, would be entrepreneur specializing in Black women's hair products. The protagonists met on a Fish Tank like show with Mr. West critiquing Dakota on her presentation. Dakota takes offense and goes off on Mr. West and blames him for her failure. Mr. West and Dakota have a chance meeting on the streets of NY, Dakota has a her toddler daughter in tow and Mr. West is with his girlfriend; but Mr. West gives Dakota his card and advises her to call him about her business interest. Another 3 years pass before the Dakota and Mr. West meet again but this time Mr. West takes charge and gets Dakota fire from her bistro job, hires her at and helps her launch her black product line, a month after that he kisses her and within two weeks of that they are a couple and headed for wedded bliss and a family edition. All this without any romantic connected between Jacob West and without Dakota's imprudent mouthiness being curtailed.

Her first words to him were "f**k you"

Dakota Bowers was feisty, intelligent, hard-working, and a hold no punches kind of woman. There was just something about her that entrepreneur mentor Jonah West just could not put his finger on. She was not afraid of him and she let him know it and he liked that. But she was as stubborn as a mule and refused to listen to his advice when she failed to win support on the Shark Tank rip-off TV show, Invest in the Best. Now she had to find an alternative way to take care of herself and baby after her step-mother put her out.

When Jonah ran into Dakota five years later, he had to remind her of what she vowed to do with her invention, Skin For Her. He was determined to make sure it happened because he believed in her. She was the type of woman he needed in his life. Dakota was used to taking care of herself and her daughter. With her opinion on men being that they were devils or the spawn of Satan himself, she had to get used to Jonah mentoring her, protecting her, and loving her. Her first priority was making sure Ella got to enjoy her childhood.

Xyla did an excellent job with this story. Little Ella just tickled the hell out of me. She was too grown for her britches. She loved her mother and was very protective of Dakota, enough to kick the heck out of Jonah when they first bumped into each other. She was fierce just like her mother. She was Dakota's mini-me. And, Jonah's mother and sister killed it trying to see Dakota for the first time. I loved the appearance of the Vegas and Portia in the story too. That lip-biting thing was hot as all get out. I loved how Portia said her husband did that too. So who's next in the Mister Series? Is it Cano?

Mr. West, Mr. West!

Jonah West (alpha a**hole, billionaire entrepreneur) was a judge on a Shark Tank-like show. Dakota Bowers was a finalist on said show. Jonah tanked Dakota's dream and her future by not backing her product. Dakota told West to go eff himself on national television...loudly! Newly pregnant and abandoned by her boyfriend, her plight seemed hopeless. Years later, Jonah West saw Dakota Bowers again, but this time, he had a whole other outcome in store for her...

It's review time 🎧
Warning ⚠️: short story, fierce woman. Dreams. A sweet smart kid.

Narrator score🎧 ; the narrators were great. Both of them.

Level of steam🔥: the book was kinda hot for the length of it.

Level of anxiety and sadness0😱😢: the book wasn't sad at all. It was sassy and cute.

The book itself📖: a great short book, it was a great little story, I loved it. Dakota was a great character, and so was Mr West.
It was well written and enjoyable.
I loved the fact that it was real, that Dakota left her dream behind because of her daughter.

Jonah West could get it!

Everything about this book is superb. From Mr. Jonah West, Alpha Male to Dakota woman that has it together to Miss Ella 6 going on 40. Sometimes you meet a person, but the timing isn't right. They slam into your world and you can't remove them from your psyche. Bold and beautiful Dakota cussed out Mr. West upon their 1st meeting. She left such an impression upon him, he continued to look for her. Mr. West upon seeing her 3 years later, stopped and tried to impress upon her the importance of her product and was kicked in the shin by her feisty baby girl Ella. Mr. West's determination to have this woman, Dakota's dream reawakened and her ex boyfriend's antics set them on a ride of a lifetime. Excellent book.

Not Xyla's best work

Normally her books flow seamlessly. You like the characters and they are very well developed. This book opened with a hysterical women screaming F-you at the main male character only to see him 5 years later on a city street after which they enter into a working and romantic relationship. The language was rough. The romance and pace of the book felt forced. The unlikely couplings she managed so well in Trent, Mr. Vega, Duncan, Crayson and Carter did not work in this book.

Coming from Mr Vega, this book really disappointed me. I wasn’t expecting the Angry Black Woman being rescued by her white savior after being dogged out by her black boyfriend storyline.I mean from the beginning of the book I was in complete and utter shock. I expected more. Sigh

Didn't know what to expect from Mr. West with the synopsis, however, I should have known better than to doubt you! Dakota, was a spit-fire and I loved her passion and her you with me, or against me attitude. She was devastated when she received the rejection from Mr. West, and the other things going on in her life just compounded that feeling. Jonah West, saw something in Dakota that day, and never forgot about her. Years later when they bump into each other, her remembers her immediately and wants to help her with her product. She was like f you now, just like I said then! He bulldozes himself into her life, and forces his help upon her, as he knows that she has that "it" factor. Little did they know the intense fire that was burning under the surface. Loved the way Jonah was able to unarm Dakota, and care for her. Dakota, let her guard down and saw that he was a really good guy. Ella!! That little girl was a scene stealer! She was so smart, and put together for a five year old. Jonah was an alpha in every way. They way her cared for Dakota and Ella, and put her ex in his place was everything! Great read!

it all started with an “F-you!”

Who knew such a loving relationship would start out with an f-you!

Dakota has a great idea and needs funding for it to reach success. She goes on a tv show to pitch her idea and get funding only to hit the biggest wall in Jonah West startup venture capitalist extraordinaire. He not only tells her no, he eviscerates her on tv! She tucks tail and fades into the world deciding to take care of her pressing real life responsibilities and killing her dream.

Jonah is good looking, intelligent, a maverick, speaks his mind, arrogant and walks to the beat of his own drum. He makes his own rules and expects everyone to follow them. He’s filthy rich but not pretentious. He has an eye and ear to make money on investing in great ideas and mentoring those who have them. He’s also single, no kids, and has never been in love. He can’t shake his thoughts of Dakota.
Such a whirlwind affair! He responds to a strong willed and voiced woman who will let him be the man and protect and provide for her. Dakota hits all his points in flying colors. He will have her and nothing and no one will stop him.
Good read!

Stop and take a ride with crazy, sexy, cool.

My recommendation to myself was to take the time before I left a review was to absorb what I read and ask myself, was the lens in which this was written hit the mark of solid character and plot development.

With that being said, the answer is partially. I love the dynamic between Faith and Ella. The relationship between mother and daughter is clear. The driving force in which to succeed for Faith was apparent.

Now my slippery slop is alpha male Jonah West and his motivation from a relationship standpoint to be drawn to Faith.

I once heard an author say that she must submit to what the characters are telling her and therefore I accept that is why Xyla went down the route she did in writing this story and while it may not hit ever mark for me it does have components in which a reader could enjoy.

My final review is that if you want strong personality types with elements of family, drive and strength. You'll appreciate this story.

Honestly Different

Mr. West, I think I like him more than Vega. He’s more rude and more alpha male to me. Dakota, she stole the show for me. Again another AA heroine that’s has another relatable personality of a black women. Yes, Dakota is just much aggressive, loud and dominant in her own right but that’s her defense mechanism. This book really captured the need for black women to be protected. How despite us having the bark and the bite to match we still need someone to support US, protect US, love US, provide for US but mainly stand by US. Dakota was so use to doing everything for her and Ella that when Jonah stepped and show not only told her but showed her “babe, I got you. I’m here to take the burden off of you, I’m here take the wheel, I got you” she dang near lost her mind and didn’t know what to do. This is what Mr. West was to me. Oh, the sex scenes were hot too lol

Xyla Turner does it again. Strong female lead character falls for older, business man who she meets via a reality show where young entrepreneurs compete for investment in their ideas, a la Shark Tank. She ends up getting rejected by Mr. West, becoming pregnant by her so-so boyfriend who ends up denying his responsibilities, leaving her to raise her little girl on her own and abandon her dream skin care product line. Mr. West and Dakota meet again fatefully a couple of times over the course of five years and at this point, he decides he'd like to invest in her idea and help her develop her product line. She's skeptical, of course, but he turns out to be a mentor..and lover. We are treated to some really hot love scenes and a nice love story. Mr. West is a demanding, alpha but he's also encouraging, passionate and supportive of Dakota and her daughter. I really enjoyed this story. Recommended.

West called Dakota his Angel but he was her King!!!!😍😍😍

Mr. West (MISTER Book 2) is remarkable. I love characters with strength. West and Dakota had both strength, stubbornness and determination. I love the originality of this story. How they first met, then how they physically ran into one another years later. Mr. West still remembered Dakota and she wanted nothing to do with him..at all!! Find out why, read This book!! This book was fire hot!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥There are several surprises in the book. We were reunited with characters from previous books as well. Love this! Xyla Turner always give you what is need but have you feenin' for that next fix!! Ella was an old soul, just adored her!😍 Ty

She was NOT ready

Dakota was not ready for what she got in Mr. West. He stepped right into her life and took it over in the best possible way. I can only dream of having a man who not only understands my dreams but moves heaven and earth to help me make them come true. Ella was too cute and really funny. So many of us have our dreams sidelined as we try to just navigate and survive this life. That is what happened to Dakota and she was surviving not living until Mr. West reminded her of her dreams and abilities. It was really fun to see the characters from other books appearing in this one. I also liked the sneak peaks us other books after this one ended. Great read. Well worth your time.

Amazing story

I loved this story of Dakota who went on a shark tank type show and didn't get the deal and told the judge off. She finds out she's pregnant and her baby's daddy says its not his and breaks up with her. So, she lost out on her dream and gets rejected by the man she loves. Fast forward six years, and she meets the judge again and they fall in love. I love Jonas and Dakota, but Ella Bowers is my favorite character in this book. This book puts you through so many emotions and there so many great scenes that just make you laugh, cry, and cheer. But, when Ella asks Jonas if he'll love her, my heart hurt. Show Turner is an amazing story teller and creates characters that get in your heart like Ella. I recommend this and all books by the author.

This story was absolutely wonderful! I actually liked it better than the first book of this series.
I felt like I could relate to Dakota so much through all the struggles she went through as well. I ABSOLUTLEY enjoyed and adored their bond. Mr. West not only stole Dakota & Ella's Heart but he stole a piece of mine as well. Just wanted to share with you all my favorite part and quote of this book. It was SOOO steamy! LOL. "Granted, I had the pride of the king of the jungle, but it was only a real lion that could remind me that I was indeed a lioness. Just as powerful, but more powerful by his side. This mostly explained my conceding to this man. He was the king of the jungle. Hell, he orchestrated the development of the jungle."

Enjoyed it!

I enjoyed this book. I certainly want to be on the lookout for Bella's story. I also read Mr. Vega and adore his absolutely charming son. I've read several of the other books that fall under the Across the Aisle series by this author. Mr. West moved at a steady pace that holds your interest. There is a lot of sex in this book with pretty explicit descriptions as it goes done prepared for that. The children have their time and it's appropriate and tasteful introduction. You will not forget these funny young ones. Great job with appearances of characters from the Across the Aisles books. If you like alpha men who know the strength and walk the talk, you will probably like this book.

Wow 🤩 Love can sure do crazy things when unexpected. I love Jonah and Dakota. It was endearing to know that Jonah was falling fast for Dakota. Loved that Logan gave him directions of how to get his act together especially since there was a child involved. The author has me keen to read all her books because of the overlapping characters. I am curious about the senators as well as Javier and Naomi. I am keen on reading all her books. Just started take a knee.Really Casey and Ella is happening on the future? Looking forward to that storyline. Can’t wait for Casey and Ella. Jonah’s eye on Casey Vega... this should be interesting🤨 Logan will always be my favourite.

I really enjoy romance novels that feel like a complete story. Here, Xyla Turner, gives us a glimpse into the past, present, and a tiny peek of the future of Dakota and Jonah. The enemies to lovers trope is used here but in the best way. I did want a little more oomph to their story and chemistry. But, overall, we get to see two mature adults fall in love. The book lacks angst and the usual misunderstandings and silly elements that pull couples apart. This was more about their moving from enemies to become lovers and eventually partners. I really enjoyed it. The addition of characters from the previous book (Mr. Vega) and the little girl, Ella, is great as well!

Skin For Her

Jonah and Dakota's story pulled you in from the very beginning. Their chemistry and fiery interactions had you eagerly anticipating what would happened next. Jonah and Dakota's reconnection years later was just as explosive as it was when they first met. I loved Jonah's determination to push Dakota to fulfill her dream. Dakota is feisty and strong willed, Ella was delightfully clever and had you laughing with her dry humor. Jonah was Dakota and Ella's protector. Removing a threat from a predator to keep them safe. This is a good read with an enjoyable storyline.

Go Dakota!

By far one of the best Xyla Turner books. I fell in love from the opening of the book. Dakota had a mouth on her and I loved it. She said what she meant, and kept it moving. Mr. West as always like all of Xylas male leads, a force of his own. I like that he protected Dakota and wanted the best for her. These two just work, and seeing how they came together was beautiful. Now can we talk about the magic of baby girl Ella? She deserves her own story! Strong like her Mom, intelligent, and just full of love. This book was simply fantastic!

Screaming more more more!

I am beyond impressed with this slice of work. I love that the storyline demonstrated the words and actions of a REAL alpha male. I did not have to skip pages to alluded all the extra back story and other shenanigans writers use to lengthen the book. I had the best evening reading every word. I had to back up a couple of times to re-read the juicer parts. I highly recommend all romance readers to purchase this book for them and about 1000 more readers.

What an alpha should be

This man stepped into Dakota's life and refused to be anything but heard from day one. She had no one to help her and her strength and stubborn independence showed in every move she made. Then came Mr. West whi steamrolled right over her stubbornness to provide what she needed. His quick but unchanging decisiveness and heart were exactly what Dakota and Ella needed and his loyalty and protection were unwavering even when he was taking away her comfort he always provided for her safety. Great, quick, and steamy read.

Enemies to Lovers Never Been So Good

So, there truly is a thin line between love and hate. The combustible chemistry between Jonah and Dakota transforms from an angst-filled beginning to fireworks of sexy love relationship journey. And, Ella. This kid. What a great character. I’m usually not fond of the single parent trope because I always want the babies to belong to the hero, but boy does this child get thoroughly claimed just like her mom. Epic!
