For as long as anyone could remember, there have only been twelve Zodiac Signs. Gifted by the stars with two abilities each, the twelve signs had maintained balance in their world for centuries. Now, a thirteenth sign threatens to upend the balance…
Talah grew up hearing about her ancestral homeland called the Galaxy. Hidden away on Earth from the world her parents had escaped from, she dreamed of becoming a true Zodiac. When her chance finally arrives to compete in the Trials and join her people for good, she is all too eager to prove her place. But beneath the lavish parties and power lies a dark secret their history had forgotten. And with it, a boy she thought she’d never see again.
Firas had spent his whole life training for the Trials to take his true place as the Soulinus heir. But when he is hunted down for the extra abilities he was born with, he has to learn to survive. Now the leader of a people facing genocide, he has to outwit a centuries-old society with powers that rival his own.
Thrust into a forgotten civil war neither truly understand, Talah and Firas must find the balance between tradition and freedom.
When Michele Khalil isn’t lost in fictional worlds of rebellion and slow-burn romance, she's hoarding books like a dragon, cheering on fellow authors, and daydreaming about more stories than they could ever possibly write. Inspired by ancient cultures, sweeping romances, and the belief that stories can change us, Michele writes fantasy worlds where love and survival collide.
Cursed by the Stars is their reworked debut novel, and the first book in The Starbound Trilogy.
Harry Potter meets Hunger Games but in a diverse world that is full of astrology!
I'll admit, it took me a bit to get into this, with all the information on this new world, culture, magic system, and how it all worked with the Zodiacs, BUT once I did was I was completely and utterly hooked! This is so imaginative and lush in descriptions; the world-building, the detailed structure, the beautiful garments, the tantalising food, it's like a sensory delight while reading it.
Learning about different cultures and language made the story even more richer. I was engrossed with Talah and Firas's journey. I want to learn more and more about the Galaxy! I'm a Libra, and I was absolutely delighted with how the Librans were depicted! All of the Zodiacs were fascinating, their personalities, their abilities, their appearances; Michele Khalil has set up one stunning and captivating fantasy series! She has made an alluring world that is abundant in diverse cultures and characters.
There were a few editing errors but nothing to warrant against the books awesomeness!
Thanks to that cliffhanger I need the second book now!
The overall storyline is a good one. One I had not really come across before. There are two worlds, one our Earth that we know, and another The Galaxy - the realm/world where The Zodiacs live. The Zodiacs are a group of people who are gifted with abilities/affinities based on their birth date and star sign. Each Zodiac has one specific ability/affinity. They live in The Galaxy in the areas assigned to them as per the elements of the Star Signs - Water, Air, Fire and Earth. Each year a Trial is held to allow the Zodiac children to fight through and claim 10 spots in their world's most prestigious school - Alpherion. The Zodiacs are a people of tradition and hierarchy based on birth and family, they do not like change! However they have a dark secret, one they hide from their people - there are those who are born who do not just fall under one star sign and who have not just one ability/affinity but several. These people - known as Ambiguas - are hunted down and killed, erased without a trace.
The storyline like I said is very interesting. However there were too many errors in the book, there was a line where the author refers to Hindus in describing the language of a particular people in the book but it should have been Hindi. Hindu is a person who believe in Hinduism the religion. And throughout the book you find yourself switching between POVs without warning, also sometimes it is first person narration and without any kind of warning it switches to third person and in one place it did not make sense at all because a few lines earlier it said one of the characters were lying in a hospital bed and the next line afterwards it said the character had already gone home.
The characters themselves I could not emotionally connect with, well Mazin I could, I honestly hated his guts from the start. But Talah and Firas I felt could have been fleshed out more because these characters could have so much potential.
Overall it gave me Harry Potter (two different worlds, but aware of each other), Divergent (the Ambiguas are seen as dangerous and therefore are killed) and Hunger Games (the Trials are very much a maze of dangers to overcome) vibes.
Will I be picking up the second book? Yes, and I am hoping things improve.
The world building in The Zodiac Trials is extraordinary. It is so easy to visualize the Galaxy and everything that is happening. Talah grows so much from a girl just wanting to be among her people and still keep the life she has always known, to a rebel who has no idea what she is capable of. Mazin and Faris both break my heart with how their characters change. It's a wild ride and I never saw the way that it ended. I can not wait for book two.
I loved reading this book. I remember reading it without sleeping and wanting and waiting to know what happens next. The story was moving naturally without any force put into it. The characters were realistic and relatable. There were some places in the book which I personally thought could be written differently but I loved it anyways. This book has Zodiac signs and will mildly remind you of Maze Runner, Harry Potter and Hunger Games. If you loved them all, please pick this book up soon!
The world building was my favorite part of this book. It was detailed, but not to the point of sounding like a textbook. The characters are also fantastic, and I loved seeing Talah's growth and development through the book. The ending was a TOTAL SHOCK and I can't wait for the next book!!!
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This book came in clutch in the midst of a pandemic. The release in August will be one of the best things to happen in 2020! Immersing myself into the Zodiac Trials was a much needed escape into the Galaxy. I can’t wait until the second book to find out what happens next!
We all know about Zodiac Signs, don’t we? We even love to see those daily zodiac predictions that come in newspapers or social media. What if your Zodiac sign is not just a namesake sign but it gives you magical abilities?
Something like this happens in the world that our author Michele has created. In her world, people born under various Zodiac signs have different kind of magical abilities. 12 signs and 12 different abilities. 12 signs divided in 4 different elements-Earth, Water, Air and Fire. But are there really just 12 signs? Or there are some more, that they are unaware of?
There was a time when all of these Zodiacs lived on earth, but with time, most of purebloods relocated from Earth to make a new home for themselves in Galaxy!! And thus they started living in Galaxy, with humans forgetting about magical zodiacs existence with passing years.
Our story begins with the description of Galaxy, where pureblood Zodiacs are currently staying. Firas, only son of one of a greatest warrior of Scorpio clan is forced to live in a foster home, along with mixbreeds. Talah, Daughter of one of the influential councilman from Pisces clan, is forced to live on Earth for reason unknown to her. Both of them have a chance encounter when Talah comes to visit Jawahra- a city in Water district in Galaxy. It is through Firas, that she actually gets a glimpse of Zodiacs life in Galaxy, and though she has to go back to earth, she knows that she belongs here with her people.
Every child in galaxy and every child born in Zodiac family has one dream, to attend the most prestigious university in whole galaxy — The Aphelion University. But to attend this university one has to pass the trials — The Zodiac Trials.
Centuries ago, the Zodiac Trials were a way to find out best warriors, but now, centuries later, are thier plans same?
Firas’ parents has high hopes from him, and Firas is ready to prove himself. Talah and her friend Mazin are training themselves for the trial, while still living on Earth. We get a fast forward of 2 years later, where Talah and Mazin are enrolling themselves in Zodiac Trials. Whole of Galaxy is suspicious as to why the great councillor had hidden her daughter for so long. Talah is suspicious about someone watching over her. But now, Talah knows a secret that was hidden from her for so long. She is no ordinary girl. But this secret, if revealed, could destroy everything Talah had ever wished for.
There is the news of people rebelling in the outskirts of Galaxy. Some say they are murderers, some say they are fighting for rights. What is it that Council of Galaxy is afraid of?
Why is someone helping Talah to fulfil her tasks in Zodiac Trials? Who is he/she? Why are they helping Talah? Who is the new young professor enrolled in Aphelion University? What is going on in Galaxy? What happened with Firas? What is being hidden from the society? Why are those century old journals sitting on the shelf of Talah’s Father’s office? What is it that the Galaxy is hiding?
My View
I found the premise of this novel quite unique- The Zodiacs with thier Unique abilities- its damn amazing! That too in Galaxy!
The pace of the novel is steady with mysteries to be revealed in every chapter. There are some jargons but since we are reading about another culture, its interesting. Also, the jargons are explained in the end as Glossary- so no problem there! I loved how we get a glimpse of all cultures here. Its not about people of one particular country, its about all the humans of the world. And this vast premise makes it all the more fresh and interesting. This book is supposed to be a first book in “The Star Sign Trilogy”, and it lays a perfect foundation for the series. The cliffhanger is so damn amazing that it will make you pine for the next book in series. It will keep you hooked right through the last page of it.
This novel will highly remind you of Harry Potter series. Especially Zodiac Trial, as it too takes place in a maze(yup a maze). So if you are a fantasy geek, you should definitely read this book.
Things i didn’t like (or rather i wanted it to be different.. its totally subjective ok!) The side character Mazin was shown to have an important place as well as strong in the beginning! But during the trials he was shown as useless. I would have liked it if he should have been shown as more than just a friend of the protagonist.
But thats all. In all, this book was an amazing and fast pace read!
In a world where the twelve Zodiac signs are gifted with two abilities by the stars, something new is emerging upsetting the balance and traditions of the world. Talah has been dreaming of returning to her home, the Galaxy for years. Waiting and training on Earth, she eagerly dives into her opportunity to prove herself and find her place. But aside from the dangers of the Trials’ competition, there are dangers and secrets behind the wealth and power hidden by history. Firas has spent his entire life training to prove himself as the heir of a rich and powerful family, but his sudden appearance of extra abilities makes him hunted. As he seeks to protect a people who, like him, are hiding and targeted, When the history of a civil war begins to emerge, tradition and freedom are thrown against each other. Oh my gosh! This was so intense! I loved the world, the unique fantasy, the interesting characters, it was all great. I was immediately interested from the description. I am always intrigued by mythology and fantasy, but I have not had the chance to read many inspired from zodiac. From the start, I entered another world. The world of the Zodiacs is full of elemental abilities and ancient Middle Eastern and Asian influences. It was so cool to see a world pulling from there and to learn a little bit about the ancient culture. Some of the descriptions of architecture and clothing were so pretty! The concept was also really cool, I love the idea of having special abilities based on zodiac sign. The story was so interesting! Throughout the whole book, there were new revelations in every chapter! Up to the very last chapter, there were new twists. Disclaimer, this is not a stand-alone. This is not even a mostly conclusive, but with a few strings pulling towards the next book kind of story. This is a full-on cliff-hanger ending, I need the next book immediately kind of story. I think I might have screamed a little when the book ended. The action in the story was exciting, the intrigue was surprising, and I loved the character’s connections. Characters are always my favorite part of a book. Firas was so passionate and committed. He felt such a connection to those like him, those different from the molds Zodiacs had, the traditional abilities each sign possessed. He has had to survive and lead a people who have faced and continue to face genocide. It was sad to see how he had to face such cruel stoicism from those who he formerly knew and trusted. It was sweet that he had found new connections with his people. I liked Talah’s strength. She wanted to help people, but she felt the pull of fitting into her new world and pleasing her family. She really cared about the people in her life. Talah was very loyal, which made some of the surprises in the book all the more shocking and impactful. I really enjoyed this book and would totally recommend it! It is fantasy, a bit on the older teen spectrum with some violence. It also has a dystopian vibe, which can endear or turn off some. Again, beware that this is the first book in a trilogy and does not have a neat ending. However, it is interesting, compelling, and really cool!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
Let me start off by saying that I literally did not know what the Zodiac was when I started this book. I am glad that it did not hinder my understanding of this story at all. The worldbuilding was some of the best I have ever seen. The city seemed to alive on the pages. I loved all the descritptions of the architecture and culture. *heavenly* The characters were great and I want more of them! I am really wondering how the trilogy is going to play out in the coming books. This was a fairly clean read but I would encourage some younger readers to be careful. I'd recommened this to readers who enjoy stories like Divergent and authors like Rick Riordan.
Rating: 4.5/5 Language: d***, 1 s***, a** Romance: one kiss Spiritual: n/a Violence: attempted assult, deaths (one described with detail)
*I received a copy of this book from the author. All thoughts are my own and a positive review was not required.
-I was given a copy in exchange of an honest review
It was a well-written book with an excellent world-building. The ending was unexpected and I can’t wait to read more.I’ll definitely recommend this book for fans of The Divergent series.

Fast paced with an unusual and gripping plot, this story will have you swept away to a land of magic and betrayal. I can't wait to find out what happens next!
The Zodiac Trials should be one of those books that has everyone's attention. Michele Guarnieri's worldbuilding is so beautifully descriptive—it makes me want to visit the Galaxy.
The ending scene was so well done. I'm hoping the next book comes out soon.
This book is set in the Galaxy, inhabited by Zodiacs;a world wherein each person belongs to one of the twelve Zodiac signs and possess their respective powers-one of the four elements their sign comes under. The Zodiacs have always been living true to their tradition for ages.
But Talah soon learns what lies beneath the pretty facade of the world she always looked up to.And together with Firas fights for justice with all her might.
The concept is brilliant and the world of the Zodiacs is very well-built.I loved how the leads are absolutely brave and daring to fight for their rights and expose the Imperium of their unfair falsifications and ugly power dynamics in the Galaxy. It got really exciting at the end and my only disappointment was all the maze action ending a bit soon.
I loved the parts where Talah straight up tells "no" whenever she gets asked by Firas if she trusts him and extends his hand.I found her very pragmatic unlike most other people in fairy tales who blatantly tell "yes" and trust a stranger caving in to his good looks and charm.I like Talah for especially breaking this stereotype. 🤭

Reading about a world that I know so well in terms of culture is always refreshing. This book takes me on an adventure in our world, including magical realism to incorporate a world beyond our own. Zodiacs live a completely different life than humans, but just like humans social hierarchy seems to play an important role.
The world building in this book was my favourite, incorporating the rich aspects of Arabian culture. It is full of action and has a dash of romance.
I personally would have loved to see more tension in terms of the romance.
Now I don’t want to spoil anything, but by the end of the book I wanted to slap all the males out of frustration.
This book leaves the reader at a pretty huge cliff hanger. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
Most people are familiar with the twelve signs of the Zodiac. This story takes this premise and builds a universe around it complete with magic. The world-building in this story is amazing and you feel you are right there in the middle of each setting. This is a series that has a lot of potentials, but it is one where you would need to read the next in order to fully enjoy as the story does not wrap up entirely at the end of this one.
The twelve Zodiac signs are differentiated by the types of elemental powers associated with them. There are the main four elements: fire, earth, air, and water that each of the Zodiacs possesses that help groups them together. Additionally, there is other magic that further complicates the world and were not impossible to keep track of, but it was just more difficult than the basic four. There is a helpful list, though, about which characters have which powers that helped a lot with keeping track of everything. Not every reader will need this “cheat sheet,” but I can sometimes be forgetful so this helped me. The pureblood Zodiacs created their own world called the Galaxy where they now live instead of their old tradition of living together with humans on Earth. It is because of this move, that humans no longer remember that these magical beings exist.
The book’s flow was a little up and down for me as there are parts where I was really invested and others where I did not care as much. The beginning of the novel instantly captivates the reader as it builds up the world and introduces us to the characters and their powers. The plot continues to move forward, while still balancing the details. It does slow down a little in parts, but then it picks back up again, which is expected in a book of this type and, especially, in a series where it tries to keep the reader interested enough to continue on to read the next book.
The Zodiac Trials are essentially an entrance exam to enter The Aphelion University, a prestigious university. Our featured characters are Firas, Talah, and Mazin. As the son of the greatest warrior of the Scorpio clan, but living in a foster home with mixed beings, we have Firas. On Earth, there are Talah and Mazin, her close friend. Talah is a member of the Pisces clan and is the daughter of an influential councilman. Although Talah and Firas meet two years earlier, during a chance encounter during a family trip, they come back together mainly when it is time to sign-up for the Zodiac Trials. Essentially, the story slowly reveals some secrets about some of the characters and events while creating more mysteries that still need to be solved. There are a lot of elements that reminded me of the Hunger Games and the third task of the maze in the Triwizard Tournament. There is a war brewing that comes into play and each of the characters plays their role, but they try not to reveal their hidden secrets to each other. This is explored further after the trials take place. You have the rise of the Ambigua army and the outcasts that I hope will have some more details revealed in the follow-up books as I wanted to learn more about their history.
Overall, I absolutely love the premise of this novel and it seems like the start of a great series. The beginning is excellent as everything is set up well. It does drag a bit in the middle, but it could be a preference thing for each reader, so others might not mind. The last part of the book picks up a lot compared to the middle and captivates the reader to become more involved in the story and want to know what will happen next. The novel does end on a cliffhanger to set itself up for the next novel, which might be okay with some readers, but might frustrate others. The world-building is great and I love the Middle Eastern and some Asian influences. The characters are interesting and I feel that they will come into their own more once the series continues. There were moments when I was more invested in them than others, so I hope that the next novel will keep me interested the entire time. I also hope that their maturity levels increase a little as they are supposed to be in their late teens (18+), but based on their thoughts and actions, it felt that they were younger (maybe 13-14). The story intrigued me enough that, even with some of its flaws, I honestly cannot wait to read the next book of the series to see what happens next!
**I give a special thank you to Booksprout, the publisher, and the author for a copy of this book to read. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.**
When I first saw this book on #bookstagram, I couldn't wait to read it! I got a free ebook version in exchange for honest review.
For starters, the premise of this book is incredible. The world building with the Zodiac signs, the powers, the traditions, the other worlds, everything is well planned out and masterfully built. Absolutely loved the world building.
The first 2 chapters were incredible. I fell instantly in love with the characters, the places, the descriptions, the easy writing style and the plot! Some might read the first bits and be overwhelmed with what they might see as description dumping but for me I soaked it all up, relishing in the colorful world I had been thrust in. These first two chapters were like none other book I had ever read and I was addicted.
But then somethings started to feel a little too familiar. The Trials ended up being for a school, were set up in a maze, and at the center of the maze was a silver cup that, when touched, would transport the winners to the school. Sound familiar? Kinda sounds like Goblet of Fire from HP to me.
And then time passed and our main heroine has been raised on earth. In a public school. With typical cliche friends, a typical lover/friend boy whom she's known her whole life, and a typical attitude. I instantly lost interest. Now some people might like high-school dramas but I definitely don't and these were hard chapters to get through.
When Talah moves back to the Galaxy where the other Zodiacs live, it felt like the book had lost a lot of thag sparkling luster I had felt in the very beginning. While there wasn't too much time spent on her preparing for the trials and being in her new home, in the span of the kind of short book, it felt too long. And the more I learned about the trials, the more it just felt like a rewrite of Goblet of Fire with a hint of Hunger Games.
The middle of the book dragged. I was distracted by many little inconsistencies in characters and actions and I found Talah to be lackluster. I didn't relate to any of her choices or actions.
After the trials, things became more interesting again, with the rise of the Ambigua army and outcasts. I wanted to learn more about their history and was fascinated with the amount of thought that went into the history..
The touch of romance with Firas and Talah was disappointing. It wasn't there one second and then suddenly it was! And same with Mazin.
One thing about the characters was their ages. I couldn't wrap my mind around their ages. Firas seemed so much older (like 25+ years) and Talah seemed so much younger (like 16 or 17 years). What felt like it should have been a New Adult book was just adults acting like Young Adults.
Then again at the end the book REALLY picked back up. The end battle was epic, with shocking actions, finding of new powers, sacrifice and betrayal. Read it happily and enjoyed it very much!!! The ending left me wanting more despite how hard it was to get through the middle of the book.
Overall the premise of this book is solid. The plot is set up well and will make an excellent series. However it just feels like its a second or third draft. It could also stand to be longer in my opinion since many of the important scenes felt rushed or as if it were lacking something and over too soon. Since this is an Indie published book, I would recomend to the author to possible look into an editor to strengthen this book's details. I would absolutely love to see this book become the best I know it can be!!
If I can, I will be reading book 2 in this series and I would recomend it to some friends who enjoy this genre.
I was screaming with flying hands when I received the book. The galaxy was where she was meant to be. And in this first part of the absolutely-i-am-looking forward book of trials held at Aphelion University and how! Talah and every other zodiac instigator which has been described, that too beautifully, enchanting the reader with Arabic lessons and confluence of West meets East cultures! DO NOT MISTAKE THIS BOOK FOR THE UNSOLVED MURDERS BY ZODIAC THE KILLER.😋 but reading this book also made me realize that i like NF more than fiction anyday with respect to astrological themes.
You must read this book if you are
A fan of astrology
A fantasy loving reader
Someone who wants to try out something new to read
If Eastern Asian Astrology is a new area for you
You just wish to read something based on the Zodiac
Michele has created an absolutely wonderful mystical, enlightening and entertaining (Aren't those the qualities of every sign we have ever loved?) tale. Mazin was my favorite Zodiac character. I am sorry to say, even with my reading experience of astrology books, I couldn't fact check fiction from reality. Even though the book was a pleasant read for me, I wanted more of the zodiac elements. Less fiction maybe. For instance, Talah being a presumptive Pisces gives away her emotional state of mind and for someone like me, who is deep knees in astrology, I loved matching my traits knowledge with the characters. Written with empathy, lots of cultural references and in a very nuanced why These trials scorched the galaxy for me. The author blends the fantasy with the same real life approach of a parent to his daughter or son, sustaining the story and trudging alongside the winding historicals. Heartbreak aglow, the book left me wanting more.Such are the bones of the story. Every chapter shined with perfect descriptions and an ability to summon any kind of reader to be fascinated by the research which the author must have done in writing this book. Also, she is one of the warmest people I have known.
Firstly, thank you to the author for giving me the eCopy of this book with an exchange of honest review.
Alright, let's go with my not-really-a-review review.
You know what I love when it comes to a book? Yes, the freaking world-building. Everyone knows about Zodiac Signs such as Pisces, Aquarius, Scorpio and more, right? But, do you ever imagine them as human as us with super power and live in another galaxy (The place called as Galaxy btw, nvm—). I never expected the world-building will be just like another world-building that I've ever read in any books, but nope. The world-building is beyond amazing, and I love it so much.
The heroine, Talah the Pisces girl, at first, she's like 50-50 for me, but when I read it page by page, I can see her character's development and I love it so much. She's that girl who is always curious about everything, but in the same time she is very determined. What she really wants in her life? To pass the dangerous and cruel trials and get into the university with her best friend, Mazin.
The hero, Firas the Scorpio? Damn, God above, I really love him so much. He's that hot, sarcastic and cunning af history teacher in disguise that kinda reminded me of Raffe from Angelfall and Elias from An Ember in The Ashes.
Ah, and Mazin too. Talah's loyal best friend. I love him so much too. Trust me when I said, he has my heart too. Firas and Mazin, which one I would choose? Well... IDK. I love both of them sm.
But why the Zodiac Councils created the dangerous, cruel and deadly trials if you asked me? *smirks* If you want to know about it, then pick this book.
FANS OF HARRY POTTER, MAZE RUNNER AND THE HUNGER GAMES WILL LOVE THIS BOOK.
I never expected myself to enjoy the first book. This first book left me gasping and want to read the next book, The Zodiac Games as soon as possible. Again, thank you so much to the author for gave me this eCopy of the book. Gonna read the next book once my reading slump is gone huhu.
At first, I was a little nervous about reading a book that tied the zodiac signs into its world building. However, the zodiac signs is really just a way to classify the elemental powers people have. It didn’t bother me. It really just seemed like a way to try and make the elemental powers feel a little more fresh. On the topic of powers, I had a hard time keeping straight who had what powers. The four elemental powers were easier to track, but the other powers were hard. There is a list of who has what power, but you can’t really flip back and forth electronically. I wish that Firas had more page time. I liked him better than Talah. I had a harder time connecting with Talah. There were some parts of the plot where the pacing felt a little off, and a few things that were a little unbelievable. I really enjoyed the setting. The Middle Eastern feel isn’t one found super often. I also liked the Maze in the Trials, and wish that that could have been explored a little more. There were a couple instances of language. The characters also go to two parties, which seemed a little unnecessary to the plot in my opinion. There was also a little bit of romance. The romance subplot actually felt a little awkward to me. Firas and Talah still liking each other after only seeing each other one day several years ago felt a little unbelievable. Some of the descriptions of the setting and other details were a little too long for my personal taste. Overall, I’d give it 3 stars. It wasn’t a bad book. It just felt a little bit weak. I’m not sure if I’ll read it again.

-THE ZODIAC TRIALS: 3.5/5 stars
I really enjoyed the world building, character developments, and the general story telling in both The Zodiac Trials. I think Khalil does an amazing job of organically weaving in all these world and story building elements into the story - whether the details are regarding individual places in the Galaxy or the myriad of diverse characters. I can visualize all the characters and places with ease, and it didn't feel at all like the information was dumped on the reader at once. There are helpful glossaries in the end describing the signs and some of the terms used in the books. Also, there are content/trigger warnings in the beginning of each book - which I think is amazing and should definitely be normalized more so in the book world!
The trilogy's premise is interesting - people (of Zodiacs) have various abilities and powers that align with one's Zodiac sign - and I thought it was interesting that the Zodiacs aren't really all that different from humans in terms of their prejudices against those they don't understand. The book is told in multiple and shifting points of view, mostly between Talah (our main character) and Firas. Talah herself is a very interesting character and I like this more refreshing take on the 'chosen one'/'unlikely heroine' trope. I get some Maze Runner, Young Elites, and Hunger Games vibes from the two books, for sure.
The plot of the story is quite imaginative and well told. Michele has taken her time in setting up the premise, explaining in detail about the various zodiac signs and the role they play in the story. The idea of using the star signs as a basis of a fantasy story is quite interesting and sets the tone for a good trilogy. The language used is simple as well as gels well with the idea and the usage of native Arabic words adds to the charm. While the plot initially looks like a cross between The Hunger Games and Harry Potter, it is unique in the way it is planned and executed. The conflict and the tense moments continue to develop and simmer as it builds up to an interesting climax, and the scene was both unexpected as well as well written.
The series is quite character driven, and to set the plot in the right way, the characters have to be well settled and Michele does this very well. Be it Firas or Talah, each of them take their own time to settle into their skins. The idea of a pureblood society is very well conveyed and through characters such as Firas’s father, the societal divide is well explained. Another character I loved was Talah’s father and I would love to see how his character arc plays out in the books ahead. Overall, the character descriptions are vivid, with details upto the clothes and accessories making the characters stand out.
The Zodiac Trials went outside of my expectation. It doesnt wowed me as much as i thought, my younger self would love it with all her heart content. However, I did enjoyed reading it as it pulled me out of my slump.
Concept of the story is truly fantastic. Each zodiac has their own skills and ability. Living apart from the earth in their own realm, a trial is being held every year as for admission to a prestige zodiac school. Little do people know there are a deadly secret behind the trial. First of all, A BIG CAPITAL YES TO THE SETTINGS !! How I love the way it was created. It gave me so much image to the world of the story. It kind of reminds me of my favs shshsh no kidding :)) it does sounded a bit complicated at first but once you're sucked into it, everything is mindblowing ✨
Surprisingly, the writing style is greater than I thought. As it is a fantasy, I look forward to something magical and tingling writing, but never had I thought with a lil mix of contemporary hint style? it is very suitable for the slumped me (is that even a word?) andd to the beginners as well when you don't wanna to caught up in confusions. Apart from the writing, the pacing is quite good. Even though it is a bit slow for me personally, I guess I'll let it pass as this is just the first book of the trilogy.
Where to even begin with this review? From the very beginning, the author draws you in with a brilliantly described world. The diversity of characters is so beautiful and broad, anyone would be able to see themselves in the world that Khalil has created. The female protagonist (Talah) has a level headed perspective that is not only relatable, but logical in a way that isn't always seen in a female lead. *Spoilers* Just when I assumed this story would follow the common trope of a girl forced to choose between her dream boy and her logical partner, Talah kept true to herself and made a choice beyond love, alone. *End Spoiler* Even still, there is a genuine connection between each of (what I assume to be) the main three characters that keeps the spark of romance alive, while not over shadowing the larger, more pressing issues at hand. Khalil's writing took my breath away in one scene and had me snorting with laughter in the next. Once I sat down to read The Zodiac Trails, I had a hard time taking a break. The end of this installment felt more like an intro into the next chapter than a closing of the first and I am eagerly anticipating her next book!

Being a different Zodiac sign than his parents, Firas grew up in a foster home along with his friend Alban. When it was his time to enter the Zodiac Trials, Firas entered with every other Zodiac who was of age. Talah grew up on Earth because when she was very young she showed signs of having powers from other Zodiac signs even though she was a Pisces. Her parents wanted to keep her safe from harm because they know she would be killed if anyone else knew what Talah could do. When Talah came of age to enter the Zodiac Trials, she and her parents went through the portal to the Galaxy. This story tells about 12 Zodiac signs and their traditions. The 13th and 14th signs have been hushed up throughout the Zodiac history with each generation performing genocide on any unusual Zodiac. But the powers that be do not get them all and a rebellion is fomenting. This book ends in a cliffhanger. Highly recommended.

I am a lover of Zodiac related anything & this book was a treat for me. Michele has build such a magnificent world that I am in awe of it. The addition of Arabic words & cuisines just took my heart. Her prose & her writing is truly captivating. The characters Talah & Firas are written brilliantly. They are so brave & strong willed. Each element is explained brilliantly. The premise of this novel is very unique & captivating. Even the side characters were excellent. The pacing of this book was perfect, not too fast nor too slow. The parts where we were getting to know the Zodiac Galaxy is written in an absolutely amazing way. She has also made a glossary for us readers to better understand the elements of this magnificent world. The ending was very unexpected, it'll make you itch to get your hands on the next book.
This book did a brilliant job in setting up the premise for the next books in the series & I am pretty sure that this going to be my next favorite series.
🔸 About a world where all 12 zodiac signs were gifted with unique abilities. Now, the 13th sign threatens to upend the balance.
The concept was super interesting. Imagine a world where we are gifted with an ability depending on our zodiac sign. According to this book, I could manipulate water 😚 (pisces). However, there's a 13th sign, a TWIST!
As excited as I was about this book, it was unfortunately not for me. There were several things that I think could improve:
1- Writing Style: Consists of long paragraphs with little dialogues which could tire some readers (me). I understand it was crucial to explain the world building but instead of pulling me into the world, it felt more like a chore bcs of the info-dumping. The dialogues were mostly there for small talks/unimportant points.
2- Originality: This book has a very original idea but the execution was a little messy. A mixed of Divergent, the Maze Runner & The Hunger Games. I'm afraid some of the ideas were the exact same, including the scenes.
3- Plot: According to the title, naturally I was expecting more of the Zodiac Trials itself which was the main reason i pushed through only for the long awaited moment to end so abruptly. The Trials too, wasn't mentioned much in the whole story.
4- Character Development: For a 300 pages book with a lot of info to fit in - the 12 zodiacs and their abilities, the 4 fractions where they live, the politics & etc, the characters have only little rooms for them to develop. I couldn't connect with them sadly.
All in all, I personally think that this book has a lot of potential but it was ambitious for a 300 pages book :)
My rating: 3 ⭐️
Thank you @aininadhira for buddy-reading & fangirling with me about this book even before it was available in BookDepository at that time ❤️
This was my 1st read of 2021 and I was hesitant about reading it at first - I'd never read a fantasy book in my life, but I thought I'd give something new a go for the new year. If you're a fan of Divergent and The Hunger Games, this book is for you. The detail given by Michele is incredible and unlike anything I have ever seen before. Rather than just reading the words, I was able to create my own movie that played in my head as I read on. There's a clear romantic connection between Talah and Firas and I really hope that goes somewhere in the next book. The book ended on a major cliff-hanger and I can't wait for Michele to finish writing the next one later this year!
