“God, Himself” is the first book I have read by Tony Evans and what a fabulous introduction to this well-known pastor and writer. Unpacking an element of the character of God in each chapter, this book is a deep dive into who God is and how each part of Him affects us as Christians.

I was captivated from the first page by the clear, firm explanations. Dr. Evans creates a relatable and understandable framework for complex constructs within Christianity. He shares everyday examples of life to highlight the points, several of which I found highly amusing and memorable! In the midst of amazing facts and great Scriptural references, Dr. Evans instills a confidence and wonder in all God is which, with the uncertainty of COVID-19 all around, I found calming and reassuring.

”God is present when you feel Him and when you don’t feel Him. He is present when you sense Him and when you don’t sense Him. He constantly leads you to keep His promise that He is going to do with you what He said He would do, even when it looks like He isn’t doing anything with you. Even when things seem to be going wrong, they could be going just right, because when you’re in God’s will, the negatives are part of His positive program.“ - From “God, Himself” by Tony Evans

That isn’t to say the book isn’t also challenging! Dr. Evans doesn’t shy away from the more difficult aspects of God such as judgement and jealousy. He calls out the reader for believing in the Almighty and yet living without regard for Him, the world and His people. However, each part builds to hope and joy. I love how he reminds us of all the goodness God promises In the Bible and the call to live with hope in the future.

”Believers should be enjoying nature more than nonbelievers do because we know who the Maker is. We should be enjoying relationships more than anyone else does. We should be enjoying a good meal more than anyone else does. We should be enjoying the flowers more than anyone else does. We should be enjoying creation more than anyone else does because we know the Creator. So do not believe this lie that as a Christian you cannot enjoy things.” - From “God, Himself” by Tony Evans

In the back cover précis, the book promises to enrich your worship. Until I finished the book I didn’t really get how it could do that! Now, every song I sing or prayer I say connects more deeply as I hear words like grace and glory with new meaning and link them to Scriptures which expand on those parts of God. If you are looking to draw closer to God, to understand Him better so that you can rely more completely on Him, I highly recommend this one! It’s a five out five on the enJOYment scale!

This is my first ARC book review. A word of thanks to NetGalley for having kindly arranged for me to read it in exchange for an honest review.

This is the first book by Dr. Tony Evans that I've read. So I couldn't compare its merits with those he'd published previously. In a way I find it easier to give an opinion without any clouding of thoughts from his previous works.

The book is billed as a journey through God's attributes. What are they? Starting with the nature of God, Evan takes us step by step to explore God's allness (comprising His omniscience, omnipresence and omnipotence), holiness, wrath, sovereignty, love, wisdom, goodness, grace and finally, glory. Such a journey is more needed now than ever before in our times when even the notion that there is a God invites derision and mockery.

Anyone approaching this book who thinks this will be light reading will be disappointed. The bulk of the book consists of meaty doctrinal stuff. This in itself is not a bad thing. It just means that one needs a good dose of tenacity and perseverance, combined with a high caffeine fix, to get through this book completely. Even I myself succumbed to the 'sin' of skipping over heavy bits here and there in many chapters.

One thing I find in the book's favor is that it is peppered with snippets of practical application throughout the book. But I would have preferred such practical treatment to be cogently presented and expanded in a section after the doctrinal treatment of each attribute, much like how the apostle Paul's epistles are structured.

I commend Dr. Evans for having audaciously taken on a lofty theme as the subject of this book. A challenging task no doubt as, given man's limited wisdom, no one could adequately or fully explore the length, width and depth of each of God's attributes. Evidently he has striven to marshal all that he knows about awesome character of God by a careful study of God's Word and from his ministry experience.

***DISCLAIMER: I RECEIVED THIS BOOK FOR FREE FROM MOODY PUBLISHERS TO REVIEW***

Tony Evans’ God, Himself: A Journey Through His Attributes represents the fourth book I have reviewed for Moody Publishers this year. It is also the second book overall that I have reviewed by Tony Evans.

The book itself is rather self-explanatory; it takes the reader on “a journey” through God’s attributes. This book has ten chapters. The chapters address God’s nature, allness, holiness, wrath, sovereignty, love, wisdom, goodness, grace and glory (pp. 7-228). The book also has an appendix titled “The Urban Alternative” (pp. 229-236). Evans gives some brief acknowledgments on the book’s last official page (p. 237). At a reading pace of thirty minutes a day, it took me about two weeks to finish reading this book.

This book had no less than two strengths. First, Evans goes to Scripture a lot through this book. I don’t recall any instance of consecutive pages that had no Scripture reference of some sort. I remember having to check the Scriptures a lot as I was reading this. That is a strength in the sense that it keeps the reader on the toes. This book was far from a snoozer.

The second strength I found was some of the sound statements Evans made throughout this book. In his introduction on the chapter about the wrath of God, Evans states the following (pp. 83-84):

What would you say about a pastor who told you about God’s love and forgiveness and patience but never warned you of His wrath? That pastor would be doing you a great disservice.

God’s wrath is not an easy subject to talk about. But it is as integral to His nature as His other perfections, such as His love, holiness, or mercy. If I failed to teach and write about it, I would be doing my church, my readers, and others exposed to my ministry a great disservice.

You can go plenty of places today if you don’t want to hear about the wrath of God. Many churches run from the subject. They bypass it because it is difficult to talk about.

Any discussion of God’s character that does not include wrath is an incomplete study. It may even be an errant study of God, because one of the very real and inescapable truths about our great God is that He is a God of wrath.

The issue is not whether we like it, want it, or agree with it. The Bible has more to say about God’s wrath than it does about His love. Of course, God is good, kind, loving, and forgiving. But if you put a period there, you haven’t got the complete story. God’s wrath must be taken seriously. Let us begin by defining our subject: the wrath of God is His necessary, just, and righteous retribution against sin.
It would have been nice if Evans made mention of the “many churches” that run from the subject of God’s wrath. Nevertheless, they are out there (Joseph Prince and Max Lucado come to mind). Evans is correct that pastors do need to preach God’s wrath. Those that do not do such a thing are a picture of the false prophets of Jeremiah 23 and the false shepherds of Ezekiel 34.

Another sound statement Evans made involved some Gospel nuggets. In the chapter on the grace of God, Evans states the following (pp. 186-187):

Grace, then, is all that God does for us, independently of us. Grace is absolutely free and cannot be earned (Rev. 21:6; 22:17). People are saved only when they trust in Christ alone, apart from works, for the forgiveness of sin and the gift of eternal life (Ephesians. 2:8-9; Rom. 4:4-5).
It is true that salvation is by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. It is most certainly free. I am happy Evans cited some passages to back those statements. Evans also states that “we will go to heaven only because of what Jesus did” (p. 189). I’d like to expand a little further on this Gospel. By default, people are born dead in trespasses and sins.

Ephesians 2:1-10 explains:

2 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2 in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. 3 Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.
The Bible is clear that people are born dead in trespasses and sins (2:1-3). God’s being rich in mercy makes one alive in Christ (2:4). Furthermore, it is by grace through faith that one is saved (2:5-9). It is not based on works (2:9).

If you do not believe what Ephesians 2:1-10 states, I would ask you please look at the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20:1-17. Have you ever told a lie? Have you ever stolen something, even if it was small? Have you ever used God’s name in vain? Jesus said that whoever looks upon a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery in the heart (Matthew 5:27-28). Jesus also said that if you ever get angry at someone, you’ve committed murder in the heart (Matthew 5:21-26). Just the mere thoughts of adultery and murder make you guilty of the very acts themselves.

Please understand that it only takes one murder to be a murderer, one lie to be a liar and so forth. David said in Psalm 51:5 that he was conceived in sin. Genesis 6:5 states that every intent of the thoughts of man’s heart is only evil continually. Clearly, man has a sin problem. Romans 3:23 states that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Man is in big trouble with God because of his sin. This is more amplified by the fact that perfection is the standard (Matthew 5:48).

Now, some people try to justify their sin by trying to balance it out with the good deeds that they have done. However, if you were to try that in a court of law, the judge would throw the book at you. A good judge would not accept a bribe. He would cast you off into jail. God likewise will not accept a bribe, for there is no partiality with Him (Deuteronomy 10:17; Ephesians 6:9).

Thankfully, Jesus came to solve the sin problem over 2000 years ago (Isaiah 53:1-12). You and I broke the law. Jesus paid the fine (Matthew 26:14-28:20). This means that the judge can do what’s legally right in dismissing your case. He can say, “This person has broken the law, but someone has paid his fine. He’s out of here.” This is good news.

There are two things a person must do. He must repent. This means to turn from his sin (Mark 1:16; Luke 24:36-49; 2 Timothy 2:19-26; Acts 17:30-31). He must also put his trust in the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (Acts 16:31, 17:30-31; Romans 4:1-25, 10:1-17; Galatians 3:1-14; John 6:26-29). These gifts of repentance and faith are granted by God (Ephesians 2:8-9; 2 Timothy 2:22-26). If you repent and put your trust in the Savior Jesus Christ, He will forgive you of your sins and grant you everlasting life (John 6:47). Oh may you know His mercy and grace today if you have never repented and put your trust in Jesus Christ alone for salvation.

While Evans had some strengths to this book, there were more weaknesses. First, Evan cites verses without citing them in full. When he omitted parts of verses, he never used an ellipse to show the omission. That was a distraction for me.

Second, he cites Bob Goff, a questionable theologian who both claims direct revelation from God and twists Scripture. Such a citation shows a lack of discernment.

Third, Evans employs the tactic "narcigesis" in his book. Specifically, he reads you into some biblical texts.

Finally, some of the language was liberal-leaning.

Overall, this is one of those "eat the meat and spit out the bones" type of books, and I do not recommend those. He says some good things in this books, but the weaknesses were too much of a distraction.

Impressions: I received an ARC copy and being so there are often errors. I struggled with the errors in this book and I was unable to finish it. My review is therefore subjective to this limited experience. Take it likewise.
Liked: In the world right now, we need to focus on God. Who he is, is important to understand for anyone wanting to understand Christianity and themselves fully. It is a foundation to your faith. I liked this topic and think that this book is full of biblical arrows pointing the reader in this direction.
Quotes: “…the better you come to know and understand God, the better you will understand yourself. As you come to recognize and see God more clearly for who He truly is, you will also discover who you are as well as understand the world around you.”

Well-known Christian pastor, speaker, and author, Dr Tony Evans of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship on Dallas, TX released a book, God Himself, on September 1, 2020. His wife, Lois, went to Heaven in December 2019. My deepest condolences to Dr Evans and his loving family. It was a shock that he was publishing this book, but it is great timing. I believe the people in our country have lost their moral compass and could use a quick shake.

God Himself is a wonderful compilation of ideas and scriptures that describe who God is. It certainly reached deep into my heart because I hasn’t thought of God in this manner. God is definitely everywhere and knows everything. Why did it take reading this book to realize it?

The examples given and scriptures to support the idea are very thought-provoking. It’s given me more hope that I can interact with God more than just in my prayers. Rather I can have an ongoing dialogue with Him. This book has undeniably encouraged me to take a bigger step towards growing my relationship with God.

I’m thankful to have been given this complimentary ebook by NetGalley and Moody Publishers in exchange for an honest review. While I expected some preaching in this book, I was not expecting to grow closer to God just through learning more about God and His character. Much of the details I already knew. I do appreciate Dr Evans bringing it to the forefront of my mind. Thank you for taking the time to write God Himself!

God, Himself is a Christian theology book by author Dr. Tony Evans.

I appreciated God, Himself as a reminder about God’s attributes. I did learn that all animals give glory to God. When a cat meows it’s giving glory to God. When a dog barks it’s giving glory to God. When a cow moos it’s giving glory to God.

I have read and liked much of what Dr. Tony Evans writes. However, this book needs lots of re-editing. So, many words running together or missing letters.

I would usually give a book by Dr. Tony Evans a high recommendation. Sad to say, I cannot do that with this one. That said, I did review an ARC from Moody Publishers and the updated versions may have been corrected.

If corrections were made God, Himself would be a great read for Believers and Seekers.

This book is an interesting mix between practical teaching and deep Biblical doctrine. The author is obviously a seasoned writer and this book is both complex and simple in its information.

Dr. Evans writes on the Nature, Allness, Holiness, Wrath, Sovereignty, Love, Wisdom, Goodness, Grace, and Glory of God. He always shares on the Urban Alternative and how we should be thinking using a "Kingdom Agenda." More information about the different resources he highlights to minister to people can be found at www.TonyEvans.org.

In my opinion, this would not be an easy read for a new believer in the faith. Although the Gospel message is simple, some of the Biblical Truths presented in this book may be deeper than some readers can dig through. Obviously, any book teaching from the Scripture is beneficial to those reading and desiring to grow from it, so they will be able to learn about the attributes of God.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Moody Publishers and was under no obligation to post a review.

I received an ARC from Harvest House Publisher, via NetGalley. This review is my personal opinion.

I must say this book truly took me by surprise, although I have heard about God’s attributes. Dr. Tony Evans in this book explains it so clearly and easily that it will help us to understand with more clarity of our amazing God. How He is in control and He is involved with every little detail of our lives. The importance of holiness to have a real and deep relationship with God. I know I am not the only one that has tried to understand God’s ways, and somehow at the end by more confused. I think one of the main problems we have is that we are focus on how to improve, be better, be more fruitful in the process we have loose sight of God and who he Is. I believe this book will open your eyes, as it did for me to many life-changing truths and in the case of many the answer to a prayer. This book could also be great to read in a group

While this book wasn't what I thought it would be, it was what I needed it to be. At times, it read like a textbook, but, I did come away with a much better understanding of God Himself.

GOD HIMSELF was sent to me by Net Galley, free of charge, in exchange for my honest review.
GOD HIMSELF – A JOURNEY THROUGH HIS ATTRIBUTES is a non-fiction Christian book by Tony Evans, published by Moody Publications. Tony Evans is one of my favorite Bible study teachers. He really seems to believe everything that he teaches.
The best way to get close to God is to learn His attributes, which is what this book is about. The attributes that he teaches about are:
The Nature of God
The Allness of God
The Holiness of God
The Wrath of God
The Sovereignty of God
The Love of God
The Wisdom of God
The Goodness of God
The Grace of God
The Story of God
I chose this phrase as my favorite…though there were many! I love learning about Jesus!! IF YOU BRING YOUR WEAK FAITH TO A MIGHTY GOD, THAT’S ALL THE FAITH YOU NEED, BECAUSE GOD IS ABLE!! Doesn’t that excite you? At times, my faith can be pretty weak.
This past month my big brother struggled with a horrendous fight against the monster called COVID-19. He did everything that the CDC suggested! He was fit. He took care of himself. At 73 years old he was still flipping houses! He was doing all the work! Before that he was military. And, then, 30 years of Florida Highway Patrol. He went into the hospital with COVID-19, sepsis, and double pneumonia. He fought over a month in ICU and on a ventilator. He had a stroke and became paralyzed on his left side. God gave us a miracle for a few days. HE IS ABLE!! My brother was breathing without the ventilator. He ate. And, he even recovered the feeling in his left side! He asked the nurses for a bed trapeze, so he could exercise!
And, then, he coded and went back on the ventilator. His lungs were filled with holes. His only choice was a trache, a feeding tube, and a long term care facility.
It was a roller coaster the whole time. GOD, I JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND!! HE’S YOURS! HE HAS SERVED WITH HIS WHOLE HEART. The thing is, through that whole time and my little faith, God was there! He gave me peace when I should’ve been a mess. This past week, my brother lost his fight. Though, I didn’t lose my faith, I was shattered. God reached through my sobs and tremors, and reminded me that He has always loved my brother more than I ever could. My brother was now at peace, and able to breathe. God held me in His arms! I felt Him. He made me okay.
I DEFINITELY recommend this book!! I also recommend any book or study that you see by Tony Evans.

Dr. Tony Evans is a great writer, orator, and pastor. I have several of his other books and frequently watch his sermons. With and advanced copy of a digital version of a book, there is a greater risk of errors and this book had a lot of them. So, I am speaking from this version of the book. Although the book was difficult to finish due to the errors, Dr. Evans writes with great imagery that is good to keep a reader invested and to understand the material he is presenting. His love of God pours from the pages and as I continued to read the parts I could decipher, I was gaining the knowledge I was hoping to receive. I do believe the final version will be well worth the read. Thank you to Moody Publishers for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

Although we do not always want to hear the truth, we get it in this new book by Dr. Evans. He takes several attributes related to God, including love, Grace and Wrath, and breaks them down into relatable stories as well as scriptures from the Holy Bible. This was such an eye opening book, one that will need continual referring to through out your Christian walk.
