After a really long time picking up another makoto shinkai masterpiece. People say it's better than Kimi no na wa. Let's find out.

----------

I can sense some sadness already and I like it. So excited to continue with the story so that I can watch the movie.

Weathering With You is a fantasy manga about a girl with the ability to call sun down upon a cloudy village. A vibrant concept; I’m curious as to where things’ll go next.

There’s nothing objectively bad about Weathering With You; The characters, art, and prose were all great. I think I subconsciously wished for something more eventful, though I’m sure others will enjoy the leisurely parts more than I did.

In terms of art, I can’t complain. The drawing style and shading were both really eye pleasing. I enjoyed the protagonist as well, and was never bored by the story despite my previous statements. This was an overall solid first volume!

Thank you to Netgalley and Vertical Comics for the arc!

+Digital ARC gently provided by Netgalley and publishers in exchange for an honest review+

This is the first volume of 3, so the story is put on hold.

Hodaka Morishima, a 16-year-old boy, leaves his island to go to Tokyo without a clear plan. The city is hostile, the rain permeates everything, and soon he is homeless on the street. An unknown girl is the only one who gives him a meal, and he ends up looking for a man he met on the ship who gives him a job as an assistant in a self-published magazine that follows strange events.

1

When Hodaka meets his benefactress again, he tries to help her and they end up on a rooftop where Hina prays for the sun and it appears to his surprise. Soon the teens start a business where they cash in at events bringing sunshine and clear skies, providing a respite from the rain that keeps falling on the city.

There are several questions that remain unanswered after this first volume. Like what is Hodaka running from? because he is full of band-aids in the first pages of the manga and never explains it. That if counting, how is Hina doing what she does? Why is she a Sunshine Girl? I already knew, like any good fantasy reader, that you cannot change the climate out of nowhere, where does power come from? and what are the consequences? And neither is the climate explained nor is there too much concern from the authorities about it.

I have not seen the movie, nor read the book, so I did not know what I was going to find, and I kind of lack something. I confess that I will read the conclusion, but that I was not amazed.

---------------------------

I'm really glad that I was able to read this Manga since I haven't been able to see the film adaption. "Your Name" is one of my all time favourite anime films, so I'm really excited for the main characters to make a cameo in this story!

The Manga itself is wonderful and endearing, and the artwork would be wonderful to see in animation! The flying whales, the sunshine.. And not to mention the characters!

I'm looking forward to continuing this Manga and seeing what happens next. At the end of this volume, we could see that trouble was beginning to stir.
I can only hope that "sunshine girl" will be okay 😔

I received this manga from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.

I so so so need to watch the movie, but it never aired in any big cinemas here, I believe there were a couple tiny ones, but none close by. Hopefully I can one day watch it because I am a big big fan of Makoto Shinkai. I am glad I got the chance to at least read this manga and boy I loved it, hopefully I can also read the other books in the series.

This one is about a world where it, apparently, constantly rains. Wow, I am glad I don’t live there, because that would just make me sad.

Meet Hodaka, he decides to run away from his home to the big city of Tokyo. We later do find out a bit more about why he did that. I did love seeing him find his way in the big city. Try to find a job, a place to live. Which isn’t easy because he isn’t old enough for everything. But he does manage to find something, and along the way he makes friends as well. I loved how he quickly managed to find a safe place. I do hope that one day we will go back to his island and see his family and friends. We did manage to see some of his classmates, before he quickly ran away.

One of the people he meets is Hina. A girl who can make the sun shine through praying. At least it seems that she needs to be praying for it. I found it an amazing power, one that certainly would be loved in a world that is plagued by rain and water monsters. But, I quickly noticed that things weren’t easy for her, that this power may do something to her that won’t be good in the end. We see her tire, emotions go up and down. I wonder what the power of bringing this sunshine does to her and what the ominous warning was that we see later on when a duo goes to find out more about weather maidens. Knowing Makoto Shinkai… it will probably get very sad and emotional. I will be having tissues present when I read the rest of the series.

I did love the business they made and the looks on the people they help was amazing and had me smiling so much. People could finally have some fun without having to worry about the rain.

The drama near the end had me rolling my eyes though. Come on both of you…

I found it very interesting that it rains so much, and not only that, that there are rain/water beings around that make the weather even worse. I am curious what happened to have this weather change so drastically.

The art is really pretty and I love the style.

I would definitely recommend this book to all.

Slow, ethereal, wet, twee, and slightly depressing, this fantasy manga is long on meaningful gazes and short on plot. The art was gorgeous (especially the scenes of sun through the clouds) and this was a fun and peaceful group to visit with, but didn't really grab my interest.

This was so lovely!

From the writer and creator of Your Name/ Kimi No Nawa, this story is about Hodaka who runs away to Tokyo wanting a different life for himself. He finds a job as an assistant writer to a pair of reporters and is tasked to write about the 100% Sunshine Girl, a person who can magically bring out beautiful weather at her will. Then he meets Hina, who reveals herself to be the so-called Sunshine girl and together, they bring sunshine and happiness to the people of Tokyo.

I really loved this from start to finish, and I enjoyed literally all the characters. I wanted a bit more conflict, drama and angst towards the end than what I got, so I can’t wait for the upcoming volumes in this manga because I’m sure it’ll get more climactic.

I’ve just started the movie and lemme just say, the animation and visuals are too stunning for words. Studio Ghibli and Disney WHOMST.

Thank you to NetGalley for the free review copy!

This manga follows Hodaka, who's run away from his small village to Tokyo. Once he arrives there, he struggles to find work and a place to stay. After a particularly bad night he ends up in a fast food restaurant where he meets Hina, who gives him some food. However, he is unaware that Hina has the power to effect the weather. Her powers lead them to start a profitable business keeping the perpetual rain at bay.

Overall, I really, really enjoyed this manga. I liked the weather aspect and the relationship between the two main characters. I loved the artwork as well, it was so nicely done. I cannot wait to read volume 2! I'm excited to see what happens with the story.

Love the theme of weather magic in a contemporary / very-near-future setting, and I am here for "arriving in the giant metropolis" kinds of stories too, but I found this volume unexpectedly meh. It just wasn't memorable for me. Maybe because it's an adaptation - for some reason I thought the manga came first (I haven't seen the anime yet). Or maybe because I read some extremely strong manga related to abandonment, being out of place and similar themes lately (Sunny by Taiyō Matsumoto, especially), so this was a bit of a letdown in comparison.

I liked the bit about meteorological records and tradition! I also liked that two of the characters made up quite quickly when they were having an interpersonal conflict and it did not go on forever.

I'll probably read the other two volumes if my local public library picks them up, but otherwise I won't go out of my way to obtain them.

description

I haven't seen the movie yet, because I saw the opportunity to read the manga first inspired by it and I wanted to dive into the movie knowing the story, so I can enjoy the amazing animation.
I'm a huge fan of Your Name/Kimi no Na wa, and having the same director doing this, I didn't hesitate to pick it.

Despite it being too romantic for my taste, I enjoyed it. I don't want to judge the whole thing based on the first volume, but I did like it.

The graphics are so beautiful, I'm falling in love with its visual, truly. I heard it's a movie too and it's the best hit movie in Japan. Well, I have yet to watch it but I'm already swayed by the melancholic and beautiful storyline by Makoto Shinkai. The translation done very well too. I can read and digest the dialogues with ease since the words aren't packed at all. After reading this, I definitely am looking forward to watching the movie as well as his other work. Highly recommendable! If you love magical realism manga(s) then you'll love this.

Beautiful and Mesmerizing read!

The cover is absolutely stunning which is portraying our protagonist in a rough-tough runaway look. It follows the story of Hodaka Morishima, a 16 years old who runs away from his home island to start a new life in Tokyo. After struggling to survive on the merciless streets of Tokyo for some time, he finally gets a couple of jobs and a place to call home with the help of Kei Suga. He then works really hard from hereon and give everything his all. He then mets a wonderful girl called Hina again, who was kind to him once. Hina Amano, an 18 years old has an uncanny ability to manipulate the weather. So she starts a new job to help others by using her ability along with her brother and Hodaka. But, power always comes at a terrible price. What could that price be?

"𝙊𝙣𝙡𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙨𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙤'𝙫𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙩𝙤 𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙤𝙣 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙟𝙤𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙚𝙨𝙘𝙖𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙜."

The story is beautiful that will fully enrapture the attention of readers from the very first page. The setting of Tokyo is dreary, but vivid and vibrant. The concept of Weathering Girl is so cool and has a supernatural touch to it. Characterization is very well done and the fantastic artwork did full justice to it by bringing them to life. This manga entails new beginnings, life struggles, lucky encounters and cute friendships. From here on out, the relationship of Hina and Hodaka is only going to grow more. I can't wait for the second volume to come out. 🙈

"𝘼𝙡𝙡 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚, 𝙄 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠... 𝙄 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙗𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜, 𝙈𝙞𝙨𝙨 𝙃𝙞𝙣𝙖."

All in all, an amazing manga full of struggle and emotions. It'll leave all the fans of 'Your Name' drooling for more. I can't recommend it enough. Go for it!

"...I always wonder what people are wishing for deep down when they wish for sunshine" (155).

I think this manga only works if you've seen the film. I love the film, so it was pleasant to return to the story in a different format. Much of this adaptation merely follows the movie point for point, but then there are additional moments that are really nice: Hodaka and Suga's conversation about escaping someplace that feels like a prison; Hodaka's school class from the island hiring Hina for their field trip to Tokyo; and seeing Suga's perspective on the first time he notices Hodaka on the ship. This volume also includes both of the cameos by Taki and Mitsuha, from Your Name.

I went in blind reading this manga. I've REALLY wanted to see the movie for quite some time now and when I saw there was a manga of Weathering with You, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to see the movie more fleshed out.

I was a little disappointed because it was much slower then I excepted and, for some reason, I had a hard time connecting with Hodaka. I think it was because of the mystery surrounding his past as we don't know why he left the island to come to Tokyo and I WANTED to know why.

On the other hand, I LOVED Hina! I love her joy and her desire to make other people smile. It was something I could deeply resonate with.

With many of the panels, I could definitely see being this a beautiful film to watch! I think the movie would be a little bit faster paced and seeing the panels of Tokyo really made me want to hear the sights and sounds. Though I was really impressed how the manga DID do a great job of bringing those sounds "to life" with the sound effects when reading. That was amazing!

Overall, I really enjoyed the premise and I would be intrigued to see how things unfold in the second volume!
