Meet best-selling author Wendy Heuvel (now Addison), the creative mind behind soul-stirring devotionals and faith-filled cozy mysteries, whose unique blend of faith, humour, and mystery will have you laughing, praying, and double-checking your locked doors.
Wendy has a life story that reads like an adventure novel. She's lived next door to a murderer, explored European castles, been a missionary in the jungles of Belize, and slept on the floor of a hut in the Sierra Madre. Her birdwatching escapades span over fifteen countries, and she's screamed at many spiders worldwide.
She lives nestled amidst the whispering trees of her 26-acre Canadian woodland retreat with her youngest of four exceptional children, fluffy dog, and mischievous feline companions who are always ready to lend a paw – or distract her with their antics. Currently, Wendy can be found in her fairy tale décor office, watching British mysteries, or eating chocolate chip cookies.
So, grab a cozy blanket and a steaming mug of tea, and join Wendy on a journey where faith, humour, mystery, and occasional feline capers make every page an adventure worth savouring.
Seriously, how did I not know about this cozy mystery series set in Canada, written by a Canadian and full of inspirational content besides?! Just when I think I have all things cornered when it comes to Christian Fiction I am humbled by how much I have missed.
So, we have the usual cozy mystery tropes -- small town setting, unlucky-in-love hometown girl in the midst of recreating herself among friends and family. And there's a murder, of course which comes complete with an inept cop and since the prime suspect is one of Cassie's friends, what's a girl to do but turn to sleuthing?!
Love that Cassie is a bit of a sleuth bungler. She's a mystery reader, but discovers that interviewing potential suspects isn't as easy as the books make it seem. Finding the right questions to ask without alienating half the town is trickier than she thought it would be. And jumping to conclusions seems to be her forte. But her heart's in the right place and she has some great friends and a devoted bible study group who have her back.
And then there's Daniel...an unexpected bonus and complication in Cassie's life. Love how the author uses their burgeoning relationship to highlight some Christian principles that are easy to ignore when the thrill of attraction takes possession of an otherwise sensible heroine. Great characters growth and solid convictions.
And the mystery is just as rewarding. The author tosses us just enough red herrings to keep an armchair sleuth happily discombobulated for the duration of the read.
A cozy mystery centered around faith and friendship.
This was not the cozy mystery for me, but it was written well and likely is the right cozy mystery for a lot of people. I do wish the description captured the super strong religious overtones of this book as I think that’s an important thing to let people know before they read it. It was far too much for me personally. I listened to the audiobook and did like the narrator. The mystery was pretty interesting and the characters were ok, but I won’t be reading more in this series.
I really enjoyed this sweet cozy mystery. It's fun, it keeps your interest, has great characters, and best of all, it's clean, relaxing, and entertaining.
Fishers of Menace is a clever name for a cute cozy mystery. A big money prize in a fishing tournament has the little town of Banford bustling with activity, including murder. When Cassie Bridgestone, who has just taken over her grandmother's business in town, learns her friend was arrested for the crime, she turns amateur sleuth. With the promise of more from this author, Banford could become the next Cabot Cove.
First in a new series, this Christian cozy mystery provides a fascinating glimpse into a small village in Banford, Ontario, Canada, during their annual Bass tournament weekend. The first place prize includes $30,000, a new boat, and a new truck. Many folks have signed up for the tournament, including people from around the province. The characters are well-defined though conversations and behaviors, and the mystery a real challenge to solve. I enjoyed the author’s descriptions of the wildlife and especially the birds in the area and how the faith of Cassie and her friends influences their lives.
Cassie has been purchasing the popular store, Olde Crow Primitives, and the building it is in from her grandmother, who originally started the business. A new renter is moving in the day before the Bass tournament begins. Daniel paid a year’s rent up front on the storefront and an apartment. When he comes for the keys, he is much younger and handsome than the photo she had found on the internet. Daniel has a couple secrets, evidenced by how he changes the subject when asking questions. He’s very kind and seems interested in Cassie. She isn’t looking for a man yet, however. She has not yet gotten over the relationship from four years ago.
As a Christian, Cassie has learned the hard way about dating men who do not have a shared faith. Going out with Daniel would be a mistake on so many levels based on that past. She knows that even within her friendships with women, she has a closer bond with those who share her faith in the Lord. Yet Daniel is so attentive to her!
On the first day of the tournament, Cassie’s friend Anna and her boyfriend Zach find much more than the fish they hoped for. Zach found the body of Lloyd Hutchins, a cantankerous older man who wasn’t part of the tournament. His body was in the floating in the reeds, but it was clear Zach was too late to help him. The police discovered evidence that indicate Lloyd was murdered, and charge Zach with his death. As a woman who has read and watched many mysteries, Cassie decides to look for clues and try to prove Zach to be innocent. Best friend Lexy joins her, and the games begin!
I love the mystery itself which was almost impossible to solve. I enjoy Cassie’s cat, Pumpkin, who is also her shop cat and frequent companion. Grams is a beautiful woman of God and continues to draw Cassie’s eyes to the Lord. I like Cassie yet In some ways, she seems very impulsive, and in others, very mature, particularly when realizing some of the spiritual lessons Grams has been showing her. While at times I had some misgivings about the characters, what I saw by the end of the novel, including a well-executed mystery, has me wanting to read the next in series. I highly recommend this to people who enjoy cozy mysteries with a faith message, close friendships, and cats.
From a thankful heart: I received a copy of this novel from a Goodreads First Reads contest, and this is my honest review.
I "met" Wendy during a book launch class we were both taking online, and won this book through her promotion on Goodreads. Glad I did. This is a fun series with just the right balance of humor and tension.
The small river town of Banford, in Canada, is gearing up for the yearly fishing tournament. Cassie Bridgestone, our heroine (and I hope the heroine for the whole series?) is a landlord and runs an antiques store she took over from her grandmother, who raised her. She has some wounds from a near-miss at the altar, so that makes her leery of men who show interest. Which makes things uncomfortable for her when her new tenant isn't the old man she anticipated, but handsome and young and giving off signs that he's interested in her.
But while Daniel appears to be lying to her on a number of details, he isn't the main mystery and challenge for Cassie. Not yet anyway. The town curmudgeon is found dead, drowned in the river. The local part-time cop (who does come across as an arrogant jerk more than a few times) determines it's murder, and decides that the guy who found the dead man is the murderer. Cassie decides Officer The-case-is-solved-gimme-my-donut isn't interested in finding out the truth, so she sets out to do so. And trips over people. And gets people angry with her. And chooses the wrong guilty party several times. And gets frustrated with herself.
And learns a few things about herself, about her relationship with God, and finds a little bit of healing from her past, along the way. Enjoyable adventure, and very believable worldbuilding. I WANT to visit the town of Banford again.
From the cover title to the last page, this book is ADORABLE. I'm expanding my horizons by not reading strictly classic literature, so I went into this book with zero expectations. What a joyful surprise! Ms. Heuvel is a master at creating live action in a sleepy tourist town, and I felt as if I was there. I was in on the gossip. In on the mystery. In on all the relationships and even... in on the donuts. Who knew a purse could be such a staple in grounding a fictional tale in reality? This was my very first cozy romance, and it was great fun! Thanks, Ms. Heuvel, for a delightful weekend read.
A cute cat, a quaint little town, and a contest that turns to murder - Fishers of Menace has everything you would expect from a cozy mystery. I especially enjoyed the mystery of Daniel, the secretive new tenant, and would love to see him in future books. (I'd also love to visit his bookstore. Too bad it's fiction 😢)
I received a free copy of this book and recommend it for any fans of sweet cozies with a touch of romance.
Cozy mystery says it all! Definitely a cozy book to curl up with!
Wish I could jump right into the book and meet the characters, shop at the stores, and be apart of this wonderful town! The mystery part is down to earth, fun and an enjoyable read as the plot unravelled.
It's got birds, books, mysteries, photography, romance, and faith. OK, well, I'm not so big on romance but most people enjoy it and Wendy didn't go overboard with it. And, she used the word, "kerfuffle." This story provides a good introduction to a nice, small-town setting that should provide a cute stage for future mysteries.
Generally speaking, I probably wouldn't pick up a copy of a cozy mystery, but Wendy gave me a free copy, and I'm glad she did. It was a fun story.
A fun mystery full of humorous moments and witty dialogue. The main character is down to earth and easily relatable. I couldn’t put the book down as I wanted to see what the character would do next. A well written who-done-it book. I cannot wait for the second book! I received a free copy of this book.
This is a fun, quick read that was perfect for my vacation! I enjoyed the town and the characters. I'm looking forward to the next book. It is a series but I feel like it could be read as a stand alone.
Fishers of Menace has it all … down to the cuddly kitty. Curl up with a blanket and Wendy Heuvel’s whodunit. And brace yourself—this is a doozie. I received a free copy of this book.
I really liked this book. it held my interest from beginning to end.. the characters were interesting, and the Authors descrption of the Village was great. I imagined myself being there.
I was given a copy of this book to read before it went public. I must say that reading this book was much like sitting in front of the fireplace, with a good friend and a lovely bottle of wine. I didn't want it to end. It was most intriguing and spiritually inspiring.
Fishers of Menace is a delightful cozy mystery. When something fishy happens during the big tournament, Casey, amateur sleuth, steps in to unearth what stinks in the story. If you like cozy mysteries, cats, and Canada, you’ll find a fun and enjoyable read. I received a free copy of this book.
Fishers of Menace is a first in the series of the Faith and Foils Cozy Mystery. Banford is holding their annual Bass tournament weekend and people from all over come to participant in this tournament with the grand prize consisting of $30,000, a new truck and boat. Unfortunately, the grand prize is enough to make the competition tough enough to kill someone. The building Cassie is purchasing contains not only the Olde Crow Primitives décor shop, but also the apartments and the storefront. She rents out some of the apartments and wants to rent out the storefront. Along comes Daniel who pays a year in advance to open his own bookstore. Things get complicated when someone is murdered and Cassie starts to point the finger at the townspeople and confronts them. She not only gets into a predicament of trying to solve the crime, but also discovers she is having feeling for Daniel. I enjoyed Cassie’s commitment to her faith as she stands true herself.
What a wonderful read. I enjoyed the story line and the characters were fantastic. Plenty of twists and turns to follow as you join Cassie in investigating the crime. What a great start to a new series. If you like Christian cozy mysteries, this one is for you.
This is my first cozy mystery book I've read, and I was pleasantly surprised! The description of the town made me want to hop in my car and go check it out! The mystery was good. There were a few different "suspects" and the story moved along well. It kept my interest and I wanted to know how the story played out. There was a Christian element to it, but I feel like even a non-Christian could enjoy the book! A fast, cozy, enjoyable read!! (I read most of it during a rainy day!) It had the feel of a Hallmark Mysteries movie! I will read more books by this author.
Has a very religious overtone but good story of a cozy mystery murder during a fishing tournament. A cranky old fisherman Lloyd, verbally spars with tournament contestants at a bait shop. Bubba, shop owner is the official weigh-in judge of the daily catches, winner takes home huge prize: truck, boat, gear. Cassie inherited her craft store from her Grandmother, and is tainted with ruined marriage in her past. Lexy, friend and worker at the courthouse: Anna, friend and bait shop helper; Cassie's sister -in-law as part time helper at the craft store, all figure in as her daily social circle. Discovery of Lloyd's body by Zach, Bubba's son. lands him in the spotlight as murderer. Cassie must temper her personal feelings about relationships and Daniel, the new renter of shop next door. Cassie also attempts to find the real killer which is rapidly fruitless. Somewhat predictable plot and slow pace. I personally did not like the heavy religious background theme but that was a personal flaw on my behalf. I felt I could skip those areas and needed more plot to fill in the blanks. This was a free book to read and review. I have no connection to anything involved. For readers of religious themed stories this book might have more appeal but it had a definite short story read.
This is a sweet book. The setting is described in such a way that you want to visit. The characters are likeable. The mystery is as advertised, cozy. I won this book on a goodreads.com giveaway.
I think this was my first cozy mystery to read? I have watched plenty of mysteries with low gore and good humor and love them, so I knew I would like it in book form.
The small town feel is alluring, and this book captured it well. There are all the elements you want: coffee shop, book shop, tackle shop, you name it. Even though there was a murder, the small town charm was never lost.
Did I call the “bad guy?” Yep. Okay, so I’m always that one watching mysteries and trying to guess the bad guy BUT… I still enjoy the mystery. And that was the case here. I still enjoyed traveling the mound of assumptions with Cassie and also uncovering more secrets than the obvious one at hand.
I don’t quite know what I think of Cassie. She kind of headlong runs into everything without thinking, but at moments has extreme caution, and then at other moments takes two steps too far in accusing people to their face or taunting the bad guys. I like her humor.
She definitely claims to be a Christian. They go to church, talk of the need to forgive, talk of a sermon of forgiveness (I kind of wish the sermon had been included), and then she struggles with feeling attraction to someone who isn’t a Christian and setting the standard to not date someone not strong in the Lord. So there are definite Christian elements. I’m just going to be picky and say it wasn’t clear what the standard was in a couple of areas, such as cohabitation and unwed pregnancy. For the latter, the girl wasn’t saved, but it was never clearly portrayed if this was acceptable or the characters were extending grace to a soul who didn’t know God’s standard. So the reader is left to accept these examples without any guidance as to whether or not it’s Biblically correct.
As for romance, Cassie striving for the standard of not dating an unbeliever is admirable and not clearly seen in fiction often. There was a lot of noticing (or trying not to notice) a man’s bulging muscles. There weren’t any kisses, but she was definitely struggling with attraction the entire time, which was kind of one of the elements of her story.
This was definitely written for women. Do I think it is suitable for a teen? For someone who is established in what she knows is Biblically sound and isn’t bothered by a thread of physical attraction, I think it’s okay. But for the conservative teen, it’d probably be best just to wait until they’re older.
It ends in a sweet and happy fashion. And there’s a cat. With super hilarious scenes. What more could you want in a cozy mystery?
