I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

Essential oils to boost the brain and heal the body is a book jam packed with information on essential oils and how use of them can help with your mind and bodily functions.
There is so much information in this book and great detail is given for each area of the body e.g. weight loss, stress relief, brain function etc.
Some of the information went over my head because there was so much of it but this book would make a fantastic addition to anyones bookshelf who loves or has a keen interest in aromatherapy and natural remedies.

This book is chockful of information on essential oils and how they work on a biological level to affect your mood and health. I thought it was a very informative read and really enjoyed it! While I loved how comprehensive it was, I think that it would be a little bit dense for the average reader. This could be evaded, to some extant, by reading it in smaller bits at a time. What I disliked most was how redundant the writing was. I'm not sure if the author was so repetitive in an attempt to try and simplify information for the reader by repeating it or hoping that would help the reader remember better, but I found it really disorienting. I kept skimming back to see if I had actually just read that a few pages ago or if I ended up a few pages back somehow since some points were almost totally verbatim in a slightly different order. Thus, the book could have been condensed considerably. However, I still really enjoyed the content and the essential oil blends that were included. Additionally, unlike most books, you don't just get a list of oils with their uses, but the oils are woven into the content on how the brain and specific conditions are affected by them. It is not an exhaustive book on all essential oils, rather it covers oils that boost the brain and heal the body, as the title states, so I would use it as a companion to a more complete book that does include a list of oils and safety precautions, as this book does not contain them.

*I received an eARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.*

As I was reading this, my husband glanced over, gave me the look and asked, "Are you highlighting whole pages again?" Why yes, yes I am. I gleaned so much from this book and left it riddled with highlights to return to later. I've been using essential oils since I was 18 and they've helped me through some pretty tough times in my life with my emotions and my body. I'm fascinated by the increasing evidence and knowledge we have on how they work and how we can use them more effectively. Even though I've read several oily books and researched quite a bit on PubMed & the like, this book had more to teach me! As this book centers on the brain, much of it relates to that, but there was also information on using oils to support various organs/systems of the body and even what oils could be helpful in breaking down biofilms or supporting proper glucose levels.

My only complaint would be that the information seemed quite scattered to me; it could have been better organized.

A lot of physiology explained but I bought the book as I was expecting more about the science behind each oil used in various blends. There was not much of this, but a 5-part explanation of physiology and why you must take care of each level for total health.

Lots of focus on the vagus nerve, which is great, but there was no in-depth scientific rationale as to why clove and lime were used in the Parasympathetic blend. I wish she would've talked about the science of this blend for 5-10 minutes, not 5-10 seconds... Where are the sources for saying things like clove and thyme can reduce inflammation? I want a source. Maybe they're there in the real book, but not in the audio book that I have.

There were small lists of EOs read off for certain organs in general, but no reasoning as to why they were chosen. Sometimes words like "anti-microbial" were used, but that alone wouldn't have explained the rationale for its use in a specific blend. Very little science when it comes to the essential oils. Lots about inflammation, the glymphatic system, the BBB, the gut microbiome, activated glial cells, why the liver is important, why sleep is important, but that's not what I bought the book for. I was looking for cutting-edge science on EOs. Did the author use muscle testing for these lists of EOs to find out why they were good for each organ? I don't knock AK, but if so, then the lists of beneficial EOs will look different for everyone.

She also states that plant-based omega-3 fatty acids heal you brain, like flax, chia, etc. This is not true. Most people do not have enough delta-6 desaturase to create DHA from omega-3 in seeds. A better source would be algae, but it's never mentioned. She is a nutritionist, she should know this basic concept that everyone else gets by now.

"Blue tansy may help modulate the immune response by reducing excess histamine ..." -- well does it, or does it not? What is this "maybe" based on? What's your source? "Essential oils can bring your body into alignment.." What? There's a lot wishy-washy language used when speaking of EOs.

If you are going to state that hot essential oils can raise your body temperature, and that raising your body temperature by 2 degrees can make your immune system 40% more effective, you need to say more than "put some in a carrier oil". Apply it where? How much? How often? Which oils? If you're going to make claims, then go all the way to explain exactly how to achieve what you're explaining.

If you're looking for something packed with cutting edge essential oil science with citations, this book may not be for you. I bought it after listening to the Ben Greenfield podcast as he made the book seem like it was in this mind-blowing category, but listening to the podcast and looking at the formulas she sells would've sufficed. If you'd like a summary of physiology in 5 Keys for Health showing how it all fits in together, then I may recommend this book. I had the last chapter left when I was writing this review, which to be fair, is all recipes (though not always exact ones), and again no references for claims like "myrtle calms the nervous system".

Also, it's written through a green allopathic lense -- "antibacterial", "antiviral" -- instead of "balancing, warming or strengthening" to the organism. This approach misses so much. Maybe the author just uses these descriptives because they're old and common knowledge. Herbalists never say anti-bacterial! I was expecting more.

This Self-Help Resource Book is Truly Worth its Weight in Gold!

In June after attending the online workshop, “Vagus Nerve Stimulation with Essential Oils” presented by Jodi Cohen, I preordered Ms. Cohen’s text, Essential Oils to Boost the Brain and Heal the Body: 5 Steps to Calm Anxiety, Sleep Better, and Reduce Inflammation to Regain Control of Your Health.

Whether you are someone like me who is at the cusp of 62 years of age, or if you a young woman in your 30s dealing with uterine fibroids, or perhaps you’re someone who is trying to heal the lingering effects in your body months after contracting COVID19, I think you will welcome the opportunity to read this volume. This new self-help guide has arrived on the scene, just at the right moment.

Living with the unpredictability of a worldwide pandemic, many of us have devoted countless hours trying to improve our health and/or finding ways to assist our friends and loved ones. This has resulted in our investing a disproportionate amount of time attempting to navigate the myriad of ways to heal our immune systems, while at the same time, seeking ways to calm our nervous systems, especially given the intensity of this anxiety we have collectively been experiencing. This is precisely why this text could not have been published at a more opportune time, thankfully presenting its material in a well-researched and concise manner, addressing these two critically important interconnected health concerns.

I have personally benefited from the use of essential oils blends in balancing/supporting my own health. At the same time, I have sought effective ways to help family members and friends seeking to improve their health utilizing aromatherapy. This book presents ways to incorporate the use of targeted essential oil blends, attacking specific health needs, while at the same time it presents information on implementing and/or improving diet and lifestyle practices to strengthen the components of the body’s immune system.

The research presented in this guide helps to illuminate the qualities of the oils individually, how these oils perform individually, how they interact when combined with other essential oils forming synergistic essential oil blends, and how and when to apply the blends in the most effective manner. Benefits, as well as important safety precautions of essential oils and blends, are also presented in a user-friendly format. This information is presented in the context of strengthening components of the immune system such as the parasympathetic nervous system, the endocrine system, and the hypothalamus, among others, shedding on light on ways to balance and support these key components leading to good health.

The text concludes with a 5-step regimen that can help most people recover and restore their health. The information that Jodi Cohen has packed into this must read text is amazing. It’s truly worth its weight in gold!

Must Have for Your Essential Oil Library

I received an advanced review copy from the publisher of this book through NetGalley and here are my thoughts.

I own several excellent books on essential oils, which I have enjoyed using for years, and it would take a special book to get me to purchase another book on essentials oils. This is THAT SPECIAL BOOK.

Jodi Cohen and Ten-Speed Press have put together an incredibly useful, beautiful, and well organized book that presents scientific information and "actual usage" cases that I have yet to read in my other sources. In addition, the book addresses in detail the top health concerns for many in modern industrialized societies...brain function, blood sugar levels, and the parasympathetic system. As a side note, I learned about Jodi through her amazing online summit that brought together many experts on the Parasympathetic System. This woman is dedicated to educating people about how to regain their mental and physical health through activating the parasympathetic system and take us out of our "fight or flight" sympathetic system.

So, this book is not an "Complete Guide to 1001 Essential Oils". Instead, it deep dives into how essential oils affect our body (brain, vagus nerve, etc.) and how they can be used to detox specific organs (lungs, intestines, skin, kidneys, uterus, etc.), and systems (digestive, lymphatic and more). Topics such as insulin resistance, weight loss, stress and mood, brain function enhancement, and ADHD are just some of the topics covered.

In addition, I am very appreciative of the inclusion of the many illustrations of the body and systems that accompany the text.

In short, if you have ANY interest in health and essential oils, this book is ESSENTIAL, no pun intended!

I got an opportunity to review an advanced copy of Essential Oils to Boost the Brain and Heal the Body book by Jodi Cohen. I can’t wait to receive my hard copy so I can highlight multiple sections and put some of her suggestions to use, especially a few of the recipes for some of the blends she sells.

The book is an excellent explanation of how essential oils assist the brain & the body to recover from minor & major problems. It’s detailed enough to help you understand how everything works together, using language that the non-health care professional (like me) can understand. Jodi’s information is extensively researched and well documented.

She describes a variety of issues (something for everyone?!?), what’s happening to the body during these issues, and how and why some essential oils can help and others may make things worse. Some of the issues include:
• Brain issues – how it works alone and with various other body functions
• Sympathetic, parasympathetic, and vagus nervous systems and how they make relate to pretty much everything else
• Sleep issues
• Blood sugar (high and low) and insulin resistance
• Brain blood flow, detox, improving focus, stimulating or calming the brain
• PTSD, ADD, ADHD
• Reducing stress, improving mood, losing weight
• Modulating the immune system & calming inflammation

One of my favorite quotes: “It takes a lot of energy to heal.” If you never give the body a chance to come out of a sympathetic state (high stress, fight or flight mode), it will never heal, regardless of how healthy you are in other aspects of your life.

I am grateful that this book is a fairly detailed description of neural and endocrine pathways for laypeople. It is helpful to know how essential oils affect the body and brain. Jodi Cohen is a teacher for those who are interested in incorporating EOs for medicinal purposes. She gives instructions on where to apply the oils on the body and how to use when inhaling. It is a wonderful resource that I will repeatedly go back to and I highly recommend to anyone looking to heal oneself with oils.

The reasons why I did not give it a 5 star are some of the recipes for blends are a little vague such as do I mix them in a carrier oil. If so, how much oil do I use. Some recipes say to “dilute to your liking”. I’ve read in other resources that the proportion of EOs and carrier oil, when used on the skin, have certain applications to achieve desired results. I also read in other places to not apply oils undiluted as they can irritate the skin, so I am confused by the ambiguity on her recipes. Also there can be several types within an EO and Ms. Cohen generally does not dwell on the specific type of oil to use nor if it makes a difference between them (example, frankincense, which is highly touted in this book, have several types which she does not distinguish). And if it doesn’t matter, I wish she would say so.

I have been interested in essential oils and their healing properties, so I was intrigued by this book. I have multiple health issues so if this could help in any way, I was willing to give it a try. I was impressed with how everything was explained and then studies backing the findings were cited as well. At the end of the book is a treasure trove of recipes for things like a Circadian Rhythm Blend, Detox Bath, a Craving-Buster Blend, and an Anti-Inflammatory Blend, just to name a few. This book is definitely one that I will be referring to over and over again..

Don't know how this book got so many great reviews. It has a lot of genuine science in it don't get me wrong. And plenty of really good research. But all her original ideas are total pseudo-science. There isn't actually that much information on which oils are good for what conditions, but there's is lots of explanations on the many conditions that you might have if you have this or that symptoms. Hypochondriacs would love this book.
Scientists will hate it.
The frustrating thing is I really think there is a need for a book on this topic but this one does not meet the mark. It's just an ad for her essential oils business. Such a wasted opportunity.

This book offers great info on using essential oils to heal the body. Detailed graphics, for instance, of where to apply the oils to feet or the ears to assist in different body parts. There are quizzes, steps to healing certain areas (such as digestion and even sleep!). The book is very eye-catching and well organized, with great information on essential oils and how they affect certain parts of our body, i.e. lavender and its relaxation properties. Highly recommended for any essential oil enthusiast or newbie.

Essential Oils to Boost the Brain and Heal the Body by Jodi Cohen was a very interesting read and different from other essential oil books I have read.

I think Cohen was great about giving lots of information and knowledge in a very small amount of space. She explained points well with clear and easy to process examples. I appreciated all the different diagrams as well.

I found this book much more informative than other similar books.

I received an eARC from Ten Speed Press through NetGalley. All opinions are 100% my own.

Beautiful floral and herbal photos through this guide book with detailed charts for reflex points. I found this book so well laid out - easy to follow practical solutions to anything that ails you.
Read it to my mom who suffers from dementia and we will try the oils on the points of her body to help reduce inflammation in her brain. Have great faith that this will be a game changer.
blessings of thanks to author Jodi Cohen.
Highly recommend everyone buying this book, use oils daily in the blends that support your best health! (Carole, yoga & meditation teacher in Ontario, Canada)

I was hoping this book would be more of a reference book to look up oils to use to target different things. The book really goes deep into the science behind why certain oils work for certain ailments. At the end, the author suggests a plan that everyone should follow to boost the brain and heal the body. I have just purchased the first of these blends, and am disappointed that the author tells how much of each oil to use, but not the ratio with the carrier oil. So, once I gradually add these oils to my life, I will have a better idea if they actually work!

This would probably be a three and a half to three quarters star book. It was really informative and I learned a lot. Although some of it was over my head. I think maybe a glossary of terms for each section might have been in order. And then there were times where I wasn’t sure if I should pick all issues or just some in a section to deal with or which were most important. She said add section by section to get started and I think it might have been helpful to prioritize within sections.

This book is amazing! I've always loved essential oils but this book taught me so much more about them. There's incredibly detailed information about how you can use them to improve so many aspects of your health, such as detoxing, stress reduction, boosting immunity and reducing allergies. I love the section in the back with 'recipes' of different oil blends.

It should always be made clear that you should never use essential oils undiluted topically and never administer essential oils orally. With that said, the author here gives an excellent description of how essential oils can be used daily to help foster the human body's natural healing potential.
