Paige has no interest in being a demon’s plaything.
She shouldn’t even be in the Fallen City of Elisium, but all it takes is one Nephilim jerk proclaiming her to be tainted and that’s exactly where she winds up.
The demons she encounters there are vile, wicked beings, though none more so than Kincaid: the cruelest and most powerful of them all. To ensure her safe return home, Paige must strike a bargain with him.
Forty days in exchange for her freedom.
With no other option, she agrees. If Kincaid’s interest in her can help solve the riddle of her origin and aid in her escape from Elisium, she figures it’ll all be worth it.
Only, the more time she spends with Kincaid, the more the tenuous line between love and hate melts away. Soon, Paige will be forced to confront something far more disquieting than the truth of her heritage: a confusing connection with a demon that she cannot deny.

*This book is part of a series and ends in a cliffhanger.*

I don't know what I was expecting when I picked this up but I liked what I got and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series! This is on me but I'm pretty sure this series is part of a spin-off series because there was minimal world building. Considering how I went into everything only knowing what the heroine presented (which was also very little information) I feel like I was just as lost as she was in certain aspects.
The heroine was in a very strange and extraordinary situation. It was interesting to read about and be just as lost as she was in that situation. It made for a great start to the book which only built throughout the story. Though personality-wise she was a tad bit bland. She was stubborn but that's as far as her personality streched.
The hero started out as a scary *ss. He eventually warmed up to the heroine but it never really felt like they had any chemistry other than the secondary character's claiming they were seeing it. I wanted them to have more of something that I can't quite put my finger on to convince me they actually liked each other.
The ending was strange. I swear that I saw the sequel's storyline when they went to a very specific place (that I can't name or I'll spoil the novel for you) but then the author magically "fixed" it and then the book ended. I'm slightly confused but intrigued enough to want to know what happens next and to finally get to answer to what the heroine is.
The Audio Book:
The narration was great! All the characters of distinguishable from each other and there were no strange noises in the background of the recording.
The series has potential. The world seems interesting, as do the characters. As for the romance It lacked traditional chemistry. That’s not to say it felt forced, tbh it seemed like the FMC was attracted to the H bc he was powerful & that helped her feel safe. The reason I think this, is bc she kept pointing out the respect & fear everyone exhibited while she was out with the H in public. Which is fine considering how she’d lived prior. Oh & She’s also bigoted & weak. 3 stars I’ll read book 2 in hopes the attraction develops emotional or physical chemistry. The world is explained in more depth, the FMC world view is expanded, & the plot becomes clearer.
I have never read this author before, but this book sounded interesting so I thought I’d take a chance. I am so glad I did! As soon as I started this book, I was drawn right in. I immediately felt sorry for Paige, and then I felt even sorrier as she seemed to get into even more trouble (no spoilers). Her love interest Kincaid is a dark brooder, and he has a past, I can tell. This was a great set up to a great series, and I am hooked. Great writing, interesting characters, and an intriguing plot combine for an enjoyable read. This is a dark urban fantasy romance, and it is so great, you have to give it a try. Highly recommend! I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
Interesting world - really want to know more about what happened to make everything the way it is. I liked Paige, considering her past I thought she handled herself well....almost too well. It felt like she should have been more shocked or helpless or something to fit with her background but I'm glad she wasn't annoyingly naive
Paige was a character I didn't expect to like as much as I did, because I tend to find the tortured past combined with naieve and innocent a but if an annoying combination. But she had a pragmatism and a strength that countered any issues I might have had.
I wasn't really feeling the chemistry with Kincaid until right at the very end, but there's the making of a good slow burn there and he definitely has unexplored depths.
I am also intrigued as to Paige's powers.
If there was the second one out, I'd read it immediately, so I hope this will stick in my mind enough to remember to read the next one in November, but it's not quite distinct enough to be etched into my long term memory, I expect.
Great book. It took me personally a few chapters to fully get into but then I got hooked :) It's modern day but heaven and hell have previously been exposed as real. Angels, demons, and beings in between exist in the world. And it's slowburn-ish? Enough to tease the reader but you have to find out more in book 2. I really enjoyed the group of main characters. They have all lived through unfortunate circumstances but the story was still able to keep light-hearted moments. Looking forward to read more!
Not what I expected, but in the best way possible. This was surprisingly good, and very intense. Shame on the publisher for choosing such a cheesy cover and writing a blurb that didn't do this book justice. Paige has basically been held prisoner her entire life, and so has no knowledge of the outside world other than what she has learned through watching movies. She was born a but believed through Ford's sick lies and poison pills that were forced on her that she was a very sick human. The truth bombs start dropping almost immediately, and they were very well done. She is not a doormat, but she has a lot to learn and doesn't know who to trust. I was engaged until about 90%, and was a little disappointed at the ending. I had hoped for a more R rated relationship, and less of a cliff hanger.
The storyline is solid, however, this book needs some serious editing. There were issues with consistency, for example it would be almost morning then the scene would last all night (simple oversight stuff). Also, issues with grammar and punctuation were frustrating to me. The story was overall solid enough that I did want to finish the book. I realize this is the first in a series, however, I wont be finishing the series due to the afore mentioned issues.
Found this author after she posted about her book on Annette Marie’s Facebook page. I was intrigued by the description so I chose to grab it up. I stared it at 8pm and the author sucked me right in from the Dedication page. I was done the book by 11pm and marking in my calendar when book 2 comes out.
I won’t give any spoilers away, but the writing was amazing. And I reread the last few chapters because it gave all the feels! Can’t wait for more.
Overall this one was enjoyable and interesting. It definitely has potential for growth for both the characters as well as the world building. It definitely needs some fleshing out. Not much happened throughout the book per se.
Elisium is a world full of mortals, nephilim and diablim and possibly some other creatures but it wasn't clear. There is clear distinction between the angel side and demon side - however, the angels do reside on the demon side for some reason. I am not sure why though as it was not clear?
Paige was raised by her guardian who was cruel and controlling. There was abuse however, not sexual. She was raised in a controlled environment but had access to books/tv to get some perspective on the "outside" world however, limited that may be. One day her guardian ends up mysteriously dead and thus, her life is changed. Her "freedom" is at a cost and she finds out some truths about herself as well. She lived a very sheltered life thus, having very limiting view of the world.
Kinkaid, is a demon but there is more to him...you will have to read it. I would have love to learn more about him except for what was shown. I feel this character and his secret has lots of potential to grow and I am hoping book 2 brings that out. I would like to know more about his power. We were shown a glimpse of what he could do but not explained well. He is a character I want to know more about.
Romance, there isn't much in there but that is for a reason. It is definitely a good setup for slow burn. However, that one kiss at the end, for me, just came out of nowhere. There was no build up to it. Yeah, there was some random "tension" between the two characters but it wasn't fleshed well enough throughout the book to warrant that kiss. It felt forced to me and just came out of the blue. I would have preferred more almost there moments vs an actual kiss especially, considering Paige's history and current circumstances.
I would like to read book 2 to find out more about Paige and her powers. Kinkaid too and what is he up to? There is a mild cliffhanger
Not in a rehashed trope type of way, but every facet of the storyline and characters. I could vividly picture the other book’s locations and situations applying to every occurrence mentioned here.
This one is good enough to keep reading, despite leaving us with no substantial concept of where we stand or who anyone is.
I think I enjoyed the similar story before? I unfortunately remember every book I read, even the long list of bad ones.
Hopefully this series will surprise me with enough ingenuity and originality to ensure it’s not added to that list.
I liked it. The main characters part experiences was an emotional roller coaster since I can sympathize with some of it myself. I liked the main love interest too, and he seems like the right person for her. Even the side characters stand out.
This is one of those books where I feel like so little happened and yet I still liked it. It IS addicting - and I always give credit to books that pull me in that way. But that's probably my biggest gripe with this book. There's so much potential - there just isn't enough meat. And the book just STOPS. Like this isn't even a cliffhanger it just ends on a scene that doesn't feel like it should be the end. (I legit had to do a double take, thinking there must be more.) Almost like the author was told sorry, you have to wrap it up right now.
Anyway, I thought Paige (the heroine) was pretty likable, though inconsistent. She's given a traumatic upbringing that WOULD affect her character more. It does a little in the beginning, but that changes quickly and she morphs into another urban fantasy "snarky" heroine. Its just not believable, given her history. (There were also too many pop culture references. I know that's random, but I'm not a fan of overkilling the pop culture references, especially in urban fantasy.)
I liked Kincaid, the hero. He definitely gives off alpha male vibes, but he has a gentle, soft side. Reminded me a bit of Barrons. ;)
The romance was a slow burn until it wasn't. Which makes me sad. It was paced so, so well, and then it just hit the fan too quick lmao. It wasn't bad - I mean I still liked it - I just hate rushing the slow burn and it was rushed a bit at the end. (Again, its like the author had a good pace going and then was told to wrap it up.)
Overall, I liked the concept: lords of Hell, angels/demons, etc. It just feels too much like a first or second draft. Another 150 pages would have made a huge difference.
Paige's "guardian" dies, thrusting her into a world of demons and the discovery that she may be demonic herself.
I'm in struggle town with this book. I want to enjoy it. Lots of other people seem to enjoy it. But it's really not doing anything for me.
- The first person, present tense is really awkward and not really adding anything to the story. I keep reading sections and imagining how much better they would flow in past tense.
- Only having Paige's POV is very limiting. Her understanding of the world is so restricted that everything constantly comes as a surprise.
- Paige has no agency. So far she has literally been dragged from one point to the next. The only choice she made (to escape) was unrealistic and she was promptly saved by a Deus ex machina. I'm 75% in and maybe she's about to act, but I'm struggling to keep reading.
- The relationship is... ??? At the moment I feel like there's more rapport building between Paige and the kid. Every time there's a reminder of how attractive Kincaid is it feels like it comes out of nowhere.
- The side characters have zero personality. I honestly couldn't tell you anything about them at this point. Even Paige is a bit of a blank slate.
- Nothing is set up. There's no subtle character development. If Paige needs to be able to do something for a scene, suddenly she can do that thing.
- The world building is muddy at best. While I appreciate that this book is trying not to bore us by explaining everything, we need some thing. Some sort of history of what happened and why. It took me far too long to work out The Hinge was a bridge. I've got no sense of the geography of the area. I don't really know what's big and important and what isn't, so it's hard to get a sense of scale
- The writing is at times unnecessarily flowery. It makes me think of how you'd write things in a school writing class. It doesn't feel natural and ends up detracting from the story.
I hate that this is a list of negatives. The book has potential. Clearly lots of people liked it a lot so I'm sure the rest of the series will be lapped up. But for me this I think the end of the road.
The story begins by introducing us to Paige. A sheltered reclusive young woman who, not by any chosing of her own, is thrust into a world she has hardly any knowledge of. After 19 years of being told she is suffering from a life threatening condition she enters out into the world in hopes of having a normal life. Unfortunately after a series of unforseen circumstances she finds herself finally escaping one confinement only to be trapped in another, Elisium. Trapped in the devil's playground surrounded by demonic beasts and other non-human entities, she is sold as a slave to the powerful and commanding Mr. Kincaide.
Soon Paige starts to question what she knows, not only about herself but also Kincaid. The two come to an agreement where she agrees to stay for 40 days for her freedom. Over the course of their time together secrets start to be revealed and mysteries start to come to a head. What is Paige and where did she come from? Who is Kincaid and what is his fascination with Paige? Who is targeting the leaders of Hell and who will be next? So many questions that will leave you in the edge of your seat.
This is a slow burn romance and it does end on a cliff hanger.
This is the first novel in the Elisium book series by Elena Lawson.
ARC provided in exchange for an honest review
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
So as a staunch defenser of HEA, I picked the book because I love Elena's stories. I wasn't expecting the setting to be dark but anyway I know the author so I know she would pull it off so I kept reading and was not disappointed. Paige's story starts gruesome and I loathed Kincaid when he compelled her to relieve her past but then, I fell for him right then and there because he didn't like what he saw and even if we don't get his pov in this book, we know that he commits to making right by her. Also Paige thinks her desire for him is the fruit of magic but we know better... Between Hell and Elisium, all you'll want to do is keep on reading to see how they end up together. I love the fact that Kincaid is a Demon lord with very real and human-like feelings and I love love how he helps Paige come to terms with who she really is even though the question of what she is remains unanswered in this book. The resolution of this installment give us clues that I cannot wait to confirm (or not) in book 2!
Note: I received this book from the author and I voluntarily give this review, it is my honest opinion.
Kiss of the Damned is the first book in the Fallen Cities: Elisium series by Elena Lawson. This a single perspective paranormal romance that is narrated by Holly Fielding who did an excellent job.
Paige Sinclair, the main female character, took some getting used to. In the beginning, her nativity and refusing to see the situation for what it was annoyed me, and then her close-mindedness also bugged me but consider what her background was I looked past those issues and found that she wasn't quite that bad. It's kinda hard to judge her because of her background, she has hardly had any kind of world experience. One thing I did like about Paige was that she came up with a plan to get herself out of a horrible situation and she grew a bigger backbone throughout the book. I would love to see her become stronger and find a place with the demons.
Kincaid, Paige's love interest, is a complex character. He is what he is but he has a past that still might influence who is now and not everything is as it seems with him. He has been by himself for so long and he as the added pressure of his role within Elisium is a lot of pressure. I don't think he is really used to or close to anyone and he has to put up this facade to keep people away. He is gruff but not uncaring, he may has his faults but he cares about Paige to a certain level and they grow close throughout the book. Their relationship is a bit tricky and I am interested in seeing how it develops further because both Paige and Kincaid have their own wants and I don't know it the really coincide with each other.
The story was great, I loved that there is a whole city filled with demon/human offspring with a few angel\human offspring thrown in too. The way they have set the city up, how their society works, and the politics are all very interesting. Plus it's filled with all sorts of supernatural creatures and while Elena didn't go into much detail about them they are still fascinating. I had a few scenes that just hooked me, the library with the bestiary, the demon market, and finally, it wouldn't be a city with demons without an extravagant ball.
Overall I really enjoyed Kiss of the Damned it was an interesting story with good characters. There was magic, mayhem, and intrigue. Paige is on a journey to discovering who she really and Kincaid's world is turning upside down. I'm curious to see where the story leads to next.
Paige has been held prisoner by her foster father, Ford, for her entire life. He physically and mentally abuses her any time she steps even a toe out of line. So when two officers come to ask her to identify his body she is giddy with the freedom she can almost taste. Until they get a diviner in who - much to Paige’s horror - states that she is a diablim. Part demon. And so she is hauled off to the other side of The Hinge. Elisium, where dialblim, demons, and some nephilim live.
Paige is sold at a demon market to a diablim with yellow eyes. Kincaid. He is convinced that someone has planted her there to spy on him, or worse. But Paige is still convinced she a mortal. She can’t possibly be diablim. And this has Kincaid intrigued. He wants to know what she is because he can sense great power within her. So they strike up a bargain. Kincaid has 40 days to figure out what she is, during which time she’ll be treated well, and at the end of the period he will help her get back to the other side of the river. Back to her mortal life.
I loved this! There’s mystery, humour, tense sexual chemistry, some really dark themes, fantasy…a truly pleasant surprise!
It’s a slow burn but actually didn’t feel that way at all because they absolutely had to build up to it. Paige is a 19-year-old virgin who has been imprisoned and abused her entire life. She has been raised knowing nothing of the diablim and nephilim, except for what she sees on the news, only being told that they can’t be trusted and she should stay away from them all. And Kincaid is suspicious and cautious of almost everyone. We haven’t learned too much about him yet but it seems right for his character that he wouldn’t just jump into bed with anyone.
The only negative is a handful of grammatical errors so I had to take off half a star for that. But otherwise it was totally immersive!
It ended on a cliffhanger so I neeeeed to know what happens now!
This is one of the more intriguing books I've read in some time. The book ensnares you from the first chapter and you just can't put it down. Paige is our lead female character, she has lived imprisoned all of her life, told lies as to why and when she unexpectedly gains her freedom her world goes up in flames. All of the lies, all of her life is not what she imagined and that freedom she so badly wished for seems to slip from her fingers. The real mystery to Paige is who is she really and most importantly what is she. From what we know so far she is intelligent and sassy, even if most of the sass is in her head but I'm invested in her character now and want to see how she'll grow and develop in the series.
Then there's Kincaid, Lord of Hell who believes Paige may be a spy and while that clears up rather quickly we never find out why he would be spied on. It seems the Lord keeps many secrets and when Paige stumbles into a mystery you begin to wonder just how those secrets are going to unravel. There's something there between Kincaid and Paige and I for one can't wait to see how that's going to go. This isn't quite enemies to lovers.
Overall it was well written story. This first book sets up the stage for the larger arc while having you get to know the characters. The entire book is told from Paige's perspective and I wish Kincaid's voice could be heard but the lack of his voice in the narrative doesn't detract from the book in any way. I like the characters and personally can't wait to get more of them. I'd also like to get to know Tori and Artemis better and I hope they'll develop within the story. Excited for the next book!
Well this was wonderfully fun and I would love more now please!
Kiss of the Damned was the perfect mix of world building, character development and mystery- it also doesn't hurt that I am rooting for a romantic connection between a certain naive girl and an all powerful broody demon guy... I have read and listened to books previously by this author and been very happy with what I received and this is no exception. I blew through this in a single day because the plot progressed with great pacing and everything was just so easy for me to get lost in. The biggest problem with me reading this in a single day is that the second book in the series is not out yet and I have no idea how to cope while wondering how everything will play out next. Keep in mind, there is for sure a cliff hanger to keep you on your toes for the next book.
The narrator was a perfect choice to bring Paige to life. She nailed the perfect mix of sweet and naive with curious and resilient in her inflections, making me feel like I know Paige personally. Her other character voices were well done and distinct so I always knew who was talking, which is a requirement in my audios. I highly recommend the audiobook as an option if you are an audiobook fan- keep in mind that I listened at 2x speed which was perfect for me.
I am a super fan and I recommend this for anyone who enjoys urban fantasy, other worlds, angel and demon conflicts and a slow burn potential romance.
A fallen city – in Elysium, live supernatural creatures – Nephilim, Diablim, and other supernatural creatures.
Paige is a scared, lost with abused past, and lives with her adopted father, Ford. After his adopted father’s death, Paige’s destiny and life changes quickly. With Kincaid help, she slowly discovers things about herself; she is a diablim with special powers and able to see spirits.
“It should have killed you. Your soul should belong to him.”
Kincaid (Asmodeus) is a respected and powerful demon. He is one of the seventh lords of hell – living on earth. He can come and go from hell as he pleases. His intentions through the story are mysteries though.
I liked how the story from the beginning to the end is full of mystery – uncertainty of characters’ intention and identity. A world full of complex creatures – Diablim, Nephilim, and others. I enjoyed reading Paige past – the painful events she went through made her a survival. I liked it when Kincaid discovers what Paige had to endure in her past: how much he felt sorry for her – so much compassion in a demon.
All in all, this story is very entertaining, and with so much mystery and unfinished ending – the truth of Paige’s heritage, and confusing attraction to a demon lord; stimulates readers to read the next book(s) of the series.
Paige has been kept from the world and most of reality that isn’t available from the TV or internet that her uncle didn’t ban her from her entire life. Then suddenly she is thrust into the world to be free, only then to find herself in another type of jail with a very different jailer. A jailer she can’t outrun, out think or even get a read on, as his powers & character are the intense silent brooding type. Then she is floored with finding powers awaken she shouldn’t have. So she negotiate’s a new bargain with her jailer for her to stay there for 40 days no more and allowed certain privileges. However if she had know who he really was she wouldn’t have been so brave. However as her days and time with Kincaid her jailer, her opinions start to change, Is it Paige finding humility? or is it fulfilling both ends of their bargains? There’s one thing for sure they are changing their opinions of each other. Anna Santos has created another extraordinary new series with unfathomable characters who have an abundance of attributes changing their new world and realism into your new reality as you are completely overtaken. I am a great fan of Anna Santos’s writing as she has a way of completely changing and altering my perception and any feelings of my world as soon as I read the first page of any of her books.
I started reading this book out of a case of boredom and I had other books to finish, why don't I just read chapter one and I see how far we shall reach? I started off and found myself close to chapter 10 when I was taking a break. The writing was good. It had me hooked and typically, as Paige is more of a YA/NA character, I would not have honestly gone on with the story of the writing was not that good.
So, we have a world where the devil came to earth and as a result, we have one side for the Angels aka Nephilim and the humans and across the bridge the lawless land with the demons/supernaturals aka Diablim. Then we have Paige, who seemingly grew up in captivity, thought this was her chance to be free, but actually ends up on the wrong side of the bridge.
As the days continue, her "relationship" with Kincaid is growing and her powers are manifesting, we begin to see she is actually on the right side of the bridge. What annoys me the most is that Kincaid seemingly does not answer her questions, he is sort of letting her figure it out on her own.
I love her relationship with Cat and Artemis. I love that she seemingly has help/a friend in Tori. When book two comes out, will I continue with the series? Maybe. I just do not like the YA/NA aspect of the book.
A young lady who is kept against her will finally get the breakthrough she needs, when police turn up informing her her captor has died. However when taken to identify his body things take a turn for the worst and Paige's journey to discovering who she is begins.
An interesting read the narrative of this story remains engaging yet simple. I was frustrated, because at 184 pages towards the end it only felt like the foundations had been established. The real development of the relationship between the characters had only just begun, although some character development had taken place. This does lend onto the next novel where I presume the story, the characters and their relationships between one another really develops. I would have loved some more story development in the first novel . The finality of the story doesn't really contain anything to entice the reader apart from the continuation of the story.
The author has despite mentioned above, managed to create a very interesting world that is not commonplace amongst many paranormal books. It focuses on Lords and courts yet with demons, angels and hybrids instead of Fae.
Overal a decent read but I feel having this novel and the next together(if it has the same page count) would have been better together to make a longer novel, rather than two smaller ones.
