I've been a huge fan of H.B. Moore's Biblical fiction since I read Eve: In the Beginning. The way she writes these stories bring extra dimension to the characters and makes them come alive to me. I can see the events unfold in my head as I read and I learn more than when I simply read the Bible stories on my own.
I read this book a couple of weeks ago, and have though a lot about what to say that would do it justice. I loved that the author did three points of view (Mary, Martha, and Lazarus), instead of just Mary and Martha's. I loved the interactions of the three siblings; how they cared for, and helped each other. I forget that at that time, there were very few women who read and studied the teachings of the prophets, but Mary and Martha were different, and knew of the prophecies concerning the coming of Jesus. I loved the scenes when they interacted with Jesus, and have always identified more with Martha, as I would've been the one in the kitchen worried about the meal I was serving Jesus and his disciples.
I never considered the pain these siblings would've felt upon hearing that Christ was brought before Pilate and then his Crucifixion. How devastated they must have been to learn of their dear friend's death. The way it's told helps me know how they probably felt. This is a beautiful story, told in a beautiful way--weaving the things we know about Mary, Martha and Lazarus, and the teachings of Jesus with some fiction of how their daily lives probably were. You can tell how much research H.B. Moore does for her books, and read about the care she took writing this book.

First off, I have to say that I am a huge fan of H.B. Moore's biblical retellings. The historical aspects included in her novels bring such an added dimension to the story and teach me so much about the culture and people during the time the novel is set in. I've studied and read multiple times these stories in the Bible and come away with different thoughts and perspectives each time. But something that I love reading her novels is gleaning from a new perspective and that coming from someone who has studied and learned about the culture and lifestyle.
There were several moments while reading this book that I really looked at Mary and Martha, and their brother Lazarus with a new perspective. I've thought many times about what it would have been like to walk with Jesus and be among his followers during His earthly ministry. But while reading this book, with the thoughts and feelings of the historical and fictional characters, I felt like I pondered a little more about their lives and what it would have been like to be there when Jesus taught the Sermon on the Mount, or witnessing His many miracles.
This book alternates point of view between Mary, Martha and Lazarus. I really appreciated how their voices were all unique and different but I loved the family and friendship dynamics between them. Which of course really enhanced the story even more. I believe anyone familiar with the story of Mary and Martha in the Bible, especially when Christ comes to their house, will know that Martha was busy preparing the house and food for Christ's visit while Mary is sitting at the Lord's feet anxious and ready to learn. I really appreciated how H. B. Moore was able to portray these two sisters leading up to this moment and to show their thoughts and feelings and desires. Yes, I know this is a fictional retelling and so the thoughts and feelings and desires of these characters are just a portrayal of possibilities, but it is a possibility of how Mary and Martha were. Just another aspect of the book that caused me to pause and reflect from a new perspective.
The scenes with Jesus in them were beautifully written. I'm sure that was not an easy task to undertake, but I felt that the author did a beautiful job. I especially appreciated the way that Mary, Martha and Lazarus' characters showed a reverence in their actions and thoughts. I don't want to say much about them because I want you to also read and enjoy and form your own thoughts and opinions.
Another aspect that I loved with this story was the relationship between these three siblings. It was very tender, beautiful and touching. I loved the scenes with them together and their other family. I loved their care and concern for all around them. It was beautiful and touching.
There is so much more that I could say about this book but I don't want to take away from or cause expectations for you. I hope you read it and enjoy it and find yourself pondering and thinking about these sweet sisters and brother from the Bible in ways you haven't before.

This one is a little bit different than some of the other Biblical historical fiction books that Heather B Moore has written. Mainly because it has Jesus as an adult filling his mission. I really loved that aspect of the book. And seeing it through the eyes of Lazarus’ family really made that story real for me.
I loved that you see this story through the eyes of Mary, Martha and Lazarus. Seeing how their lives may have been made them seem real to me. It was great to understand a little bit how they would have lived. The author did a fabulous job with her characters.
I loved the story line of this one. Sometimes it seems like the lives of the people in the scriptures don’t go on beyond the story. But this book reminded me that they were real people. Their lives did go on and they did more things than were in the scriptures.
I loved this book! Hoping for more like this book soon!

The story of Mary and Martha. The first part of the novel was wonderful. Getting to know the family and their friends was wonderful. Lazarus a grateful l brother and friend, Mary a knowledgeable girl who doesn't want to follow what the other girls do, getting married and having children. Martha a hard worker with a huge heart but she is also widow, can she find love once again. The 2nd part of the book seem like a laundry list of biblical quotes that the author had to follow. I felt like I had to check off everything event that happen. They made sure they had everything from the Bible in the novel, even things that didn't fit. After awhile it got overwhelming. So I feel like the book are 2 parts. I did enjoy the read but I could only give it 3 stars. I am so glad I did read it and look forward from more from this author.

The story of Mary and Martham has always been, one of my favorite parts of the Bible for me. H.B. Moore tells the tender story of two sisters, Mary and Martha and the love they both have for their brother Lazarus and his family. What a great rendition of Mary and Martha.
Martha likes to serve others and Mary secretly loves to study, the scrolls of scripture. The tender moments of Jesus' miracles, healing, feeding the 5000, raising Lazarus from the dead. What might it have been like to live, during those last days of Jesus' life.
The story of Mary and Martham has always been, one of my favorite parts of the Bible for me. H.B. Moore tells the tender story of two sisters, Mary and Martha and the love they both have for their brother Lazarus and his family. What a great rendition of Mary and Martha.

This is one of those books that I needed to let settle before doing a review. I am just hoping that I am able to express my thoughts in such a way that will persuade someone to read it.
Mary and Martha are the Biblical figures that we are familiar with. This story encompasses an idea of the time right before Lazarus met Jesus to the events following the crucifixion and resurrection. There was obviously some license taken with the characters and the people surrounding them because we don't see much of them in the Bible. However, this license was taken with respect and with love for the Biblical story.
Of course, Jesus is shown as a character in this story. He is portrayed with respect. In the scene where Lazarus meets him for the first time, I was nearly overcome with the love from my Savior coming off the page. It has stuck with me sense. Much of the dialogue of Christ comes from scripture especially from times when he taught the people.
The portrayal of Mary and Martha in the story is true to the personalities of the women as shown in the Bible. I was happy with the addition of family and friends that enriched the story.
I believe that Biblical Fiction would be very tricky to write knowing how there is sometimes not much information about different people who are mentioned. I think that H. B. Moore did a fantastic job with this story and these characters. I would definitely read this again.

H.B. Moore has written an inspiring and faith filled story in her novel, Mary and Martha. Readers will enjoy getting to know Mary, Martha, and Lazarus throughout the story. The first half of the book a lot of time is spent getting to know the characters and laying out what is yet to come. On the other hand, there was a lack depth and of connection between the reader and the characters in the second half of the story. There wasn’t as much depth and readers will feel like they are speeding through all the events leading up to the death and then resurrection of Christ. Over all this is a heartwarming, sweet and inspiring story that also includes a touch of romance that readers will enjoy.

What a beautiful and captivating read! I finished this book almost a week ago and am still thinking about it. While we don't know a lot of details about Mary, Martha, or Lazarus, the author has weaved fictional tales of their lives with the truths about them that we do know from the New Testament. I have pondered a lot on the lessons Mary and Martha learned in their interactions with Jesus Christ and what those mean for me in my life. I enjoyed learning more about the ministry and life of Jesus and this book helped me ponder in an a deeper way what it would have been like to be one of His followers.
This book evoked such tender emotions that I could not put it down. I highly recommend this book to any fan of Christian or Biblical fiction.

What a wonderful book by H. B. Moore! I have read other books by her but I really loved this book! I loved getting a glimpse into what life might have been like for those who heard Jesus teach. I loved the way she told Mary and Martha and Lazarus’ story. I loved seeing their journey as they came to know and follow Christ. Although this book is fictional, as I read it my testimony of Christ grew. I really loved this book and feel that anyone who wants to learn more about the Savior should read this book. Well done!

A beautiful retelling of the lives of Mary, Martha and their brother Lazarus. The book switches from different points of view throughout so you can always see what each character is feeling. Although some parts are speculation, this was a great biblical fiction read.

Impressions: I enjoyed reading the gospel this way as it reminded me of how human the people of the Bible were. This book would be a way to share the gospel with others with little pressure. Although this story is fiction it is biblically based with scripture throughout.
Liked: I enjoyed reading about Mary and Martha. I appreciated the real life struggles and feelings these women might have experienced.
Disliked: Although I enjoyed this book, I feel like there were times that the scripture was a bit heavy and it took away from the story making it feel like I was just reading my Bible.
Learned: There is something special to me when I read about the people of the Bible through fiction. It feels more personable. I think it is easy to get caught up in all the structure or rules the Bible has to offer. Even the reverence in which I approach the Bible can make the words feel disconnected with me. When I think about the people of the Bible however in story format such as this it reminds me how imperfect they were. God used them and He will use me and you as well if we seek Him to do so. I learned that I need not be afraid of sharing my faith. I especially was inspired by Horeb’s faith. His attitude was encouraging to me.
Quotes: “You have never been second choice, Martha.” – This will not make sense unless you read this story but I really liked it. I can just imagine being told this and how it would just melt my heart.

I don’t know how many of you have read the Bible retellings by HB Moore, but if you have, you already know what a delight you are in for and if you haven’t, add this to your list!
I have read almost all of HB Moore’s bible stories and have been a huge fan. Nothing prepared me for how much I would love this story.

I have studied the life of Christ repeatedly. Especially from the New Testament. There is something so special and sacred from that text that draws me in again and again. The story of Mary and Martha preparing for Jesus’ visit has always been a story and lesson that has stood out to me personally. I have felt commonalities with both Mary and Martha at different times in my life and love learning something new each time I read that story.
Heather does such a fantastic job of setting the scene and using actual information from the bible to keep it as close to the bible account as possible. I couldn’t believe how alive she made Lazarus feel to me. I thought he would be more of a supporting character instead of a lead character, but with her 3 person point of view I have gained a whole new appreciation for him.
I read this book in less than 24 hours. It was captivating, beautiful and tenderly written. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves bible stories and characters from the life of Christ.

#BookReview: MARY AND MARTHA by H.B Moore 4.5 stars
This is the second biblical fiction book I have read. I have this hesitation and that it will deviate so much from the truth. But I have heard good reviews about this book so I picked it up. As the title suggests, the story is about Mary and Martha. But also about their brother Lazarus and his family. New characters are incorporated to create a better picture of the town of Bethany and it’s people, as well as their customs and traditions.
I love how the whole story evolved. Lazarus helping Horeb is a blessing. I am in awe of Horeb and Sarah’s faith in Jesus. That moment when Lazarus saw Jesus for the first time. Wow. I can’t fathom how it must feel to see Jesus in person. I had some goosebumps too! It must be jaw dropping to see Jesus perform miracle after miracle. I know the bible story of Mary and Martha in the bible but I still anticipated Jesus’s arrival at their house. I feel their willingness and excitement when they prepare to see Jesus again. I cried and laughed with this family. It was an amazing journey of faith and love.
I enjoy romance but I have mixed feelings about the subgenre of Mary and Martha’s love life. I got used to the subtle glances and feelings evoked by the couples involved. Zachary and Horeb are good men so I’m happy with that.
I appreciate the scripture references by chapter and in order of reference at the end of the book. This is a perfect read during this #lentenseason and every season of the year. This will be one of my unforgettable reads for the year.

As the title suggests, the story is about Mary and Martha. But also about their brother Lazarus and his family. New characters are incorporated to create a better picture of the town of Bethany and it’s people, as well as their customs and traditions.
I love how the whole story evolved. Lazarus helping Horeb is a blessing. I am in awe of Horeb and Sarah’s faith in Jesus. That moment when Lazarus saw Jesus for the first time. Wow. I can’t fathom how it must feel to see Jesus in person. I had some goosebumps too! It must be jaw dropping to see Jesus perform miracle after miracle. I know the bible story of Mary and Martha in the bible but I still anticipated Jesus’s arrival at their house. I feel their willingness and excitement when they prepare to see Jesus again. I cried and laughed with this family. It was an amazing journey of faith and love.
I enjoy romance but I have mixed feelings about the subgenre of Mary and Martha’s love life. I got used to the subtle glances and feelings evoked by the couples involved. Zachary and Horeb are good men so I’m happy with that.
I appreciate the scripture references by chapter and in order of reference at the end of the book. This is a perfect read during this #lentenseason and every season of the year. This will be one of my unforgettable reads for the year.

This was my first time reading H.B. Moore's Biblical fiction and let me tell you, I will be reading her other ones. I fell in love with this story. Moore did a fantastic job and taking a story from the Bible and helping to bring the story to life even more showing us perspectives of the time, emotions that may have been going through their minds at the time. One reason I love books like this is that they really dive into the culture and help it all to really come to life for us readers, make it more applicable to today. I have an even greater respect for the two women after reading Moore's retelling and I was so sad to see the book end.
Being able to see the story through Mary and Martha's eyes was so eye opening for me. And I even loved that we got to see pieces of Lazarus perspective as well. Mary's enthusiasm for learning all that Christ has to teach is addicting for the reader, and Martha's desire to serve everyone well and do her part in the family and community is inspiring. They are great role models for us all and Moore helped me see that even more than I had before.
This is such a wonderful retelling of a beautiful biblical story, rich with thoughts, experiences, and life. I absolutely loved this book. I thought about it for days and even weeks after finishing it. I love books that impact my life like that and this was definitely one of those books. Historical Fictions can sometimes be tricky reads if you have an invested interest in the historical time period or the story. As such there were some scenes in the book that were incongruous with my expectations. That is the wonderful thing about fiction though, you can imagine it any way you want. And Heather’s imagery of the story and the time period was beautifully done.
I loved that the story was not just from Mary and Martha’s point of view, but Lazarus’ as well. Heather created both Mary and Martha with both weaknesses, strengths and growth. For such iconic biblical characters she portrayed well, as women to be respected and emulated in their own ways.
The romances were subtle and took a back seat the to the family dynamics and the sister’s relationship which I felt was perfect for this story and very well done.
I wish the relationship between Jesus and Lazarus, Mary and Martha was developed a little more. I felt like it was missing some of the substance I’d always attributed to them. I understand however, the delicate nature of attributing any words or actions to Christ that aren’t cannon; and respect that those that were used in the text were direct quotes.
As a whole the family relationships really made the novel shine and I loved seeing these precious moments in history through the eyes of such well developed characters.

This is the first Biblical fiction novel I have read by this author and after having read it, I look forward to reading the other Biblical fiction novels this author has already written and for more to come.

The way the author portrayed the sibling relationships of Mary and Martha along with that of Lazarus was super interesting and well-done. I pondered so much more about what their lives may have been like and enjoyed the light romance set up as well throughout the story. While we may not know more than what the Bible teaches about these individuals, Moore did a great job of showing possibilities and inviting readers to take a deeper look.

This is my first read from H.B. Moore, and I was very impressed with her Biblical knowledge, historical research of the life and culture of the time period, and her speculation at what would be fictionally appropriate to expand the story of Lazarus, Mary, and Martha. As I read, I felt like I was right there as the events took place that surrounded the ministry of Jesus. We know very little from the Bible of Lazarus and his sisters other than their encounters with Jesus, but Moore gave us more of a picture of what their emotions, relationships, and general life during that time period might be like. I especially liked the addition of the fiction characters, particularly Horeb, who fleshed out the story line and felt perfect for that time and culture. The inclusion of many appropriate Bible scriptures at the perfect point in the story brought a cohesion to the story connecting fact with fiction.
I look forward to reading more of Moore's Biblical fiction.

Mary and Martha is a beautiful Biblical retelling of two sisters and their brother Lazarus, whom Jesus raised from the dead. This novel lets readers experience what it would have been like to be a friend of Jesus. The siblings each have chapters devoted to their point of view. The author does a wonderful job writing her Biblical stories with authentic descriptions for the people of that time. Things that were told so well were the relationships between the siblings, their individual trials, and awakenings to Jesus and his teachings The readers are shown many of the miracles that Jesus performed during his short ministry. Of course, the one that had me in tears was Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. Reading of the feelings the sisters possibly went through, brought even more meaning to this great miracle.
H.B. Moore is a great researcher that writes believable stories mixing facts and fiction. Any reader that loves a good story, especially one based on Bible stories, will adore the story of Mary and Martha.

I always love reading H.B. Moore's Biblical fiction because it's so well-written, with amazing details that really transport me to the past, and characters who draw me into the story, and this book was no exception. I loved her imagining of Mary and Martha and what their lives may have been like. I especially enjoyed the fact that she portrayed them as caring deeply about each other; it's so easy, based on the few Bible verses about them, to envision them as rivals or constantly being frustrated with each other. Moore showed them differently, though, and as I was touched by how much they supported each other even though they had different personalities and different interests. I also really loved the dash of romance incorporated in the story, as both Mary and Martha find someone who is drawn to them for their unique gifts. This was a beautiful story and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I have looked forward to this book for a while and it did not disappoint. H.B. Moore's understanding of the culture of Biblical times and her understanding of and research into the Bible's message makes this book very enlightening. She was careful to only quote Jesus' words from the bible. Not put other words into his mouth. I love how the additional storyline helps me picture what it might have been like to live at that time. For some reason, I had never before considered how unusual it would be at that time for a woman to want to study the word of God. How out of place Mary might have been from other women of her time. This story gave me perspective. I love how the characters of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus were portrayed. They were all so different yet united in their love of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Many are similar with the Biblical story of the sisters Martha and Mary and their brother Lazarus. They were all friends of Jesus Christ, learned the gospel at his knee and were there when Lazarus was raised from the dead.
Moore paints a beautiful picture of what could possibly have been their story, if only we could know it. The world, the era, the people are all well-written and vivid. There were many times I wondered what it would've been like to live in the same area as Christ and to listen to his teachings.

I know I'm a bit late on this but I took my time and savored it. And well...... Sometimes life just gets in the way.
I loved this story of Lazurus, Mary and Martha. H. B. Moore is a good author who can pick up the stories from where the bible left off. It's wonderful to read how they lived their daily lives which is pretty much like ours only much harder.
Their thoughts, fears, hope, love and redemption truly amazing.
I was drawn in This story from beginning til the end. I didn't want to come back to the present.
This story left me feeling blessed and left my heart feeling full. I can't wait to see what this author comes out with next.

I really liked how the relationships were portrayed between the siblings, Lazarus, Martha and Mary. Their strong bond is so beautiful. It was interesting to read about what life may have been like in their day. The fictional side characters were well written and equally likable. I feel like I gained more insight into Martha and Mary's personalities. I felt like I could relate to each of them in different ways. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to those seeking to know more about this scriptural account and the teachings of Jesus Christ.

I have read the encounter of Martha and Mary in the scriptures. There is so little mentioned about them and their brother Lazarus. I often have wondered what their life would have been like. What would it mean to have Jesus come to your home? H.B. Moore does a great job giving us a fictional view of their life in biblical times. The characters were believable and the book was well written. I received a copy of this story from Covenant Communications through NetGally. The opinions expressed here are my own.

This is a cute little piece of Biblical fiction. I wouldn’t say it gave me any significant insight into these Biblical characters, but the story itself seems plausible and the historic details authentic. Some of the Biblical details seem rather awkwardly thrown in, and it would have been nice to see more interaction of these characters with Jesus. They were so few and far between that I didn’t come away with the feeling they were great friends with Him. Mostly it’s a sweet tale of two sisters each getting their happily ever after over the background of important Biblical events.

A beautiful historical novel set in the time of Jesus Christ’s earth life. Mary and Martha and their brother Lazarus are portrayed beautifully, and Christ’s miracle of bringing Lazarus back from death vividly prepares us for Jesus Christ’s own death and resurrection. Thank you, Heather Moore, for another excellent book.

I thought it was a very sweet story. I feel like I can relate to both of the sister's personalities. I am inquisitive like Mary and a lot of my time is spent in serving others like Martha. I like see the realness in the characters.

Somewhere between 2.5 stars and 3 stars. This book is a historical fiction based loosely on the story of Mary and Martha. It was a light and fluffy book which was nice for me after reading a lot of heavy historical memoirs. However, the author could have put forth more effort to put the story more into historical context. The language and characterization just didn’t feel authentic to the time.
I’m a big fan of “Show Me, Don’t Tell Me” in books/movies, and the last 30% of this book was people telling Mary and Martha what happened with Jesus and not showing us through their eyes. It didn’t work very well and didn’t do much to add to the narration. If the characters weren’t there, I think the author should have just wrapped up and ended the story earlier.

I loved this book! I've always wanted to know more about Mary, Martha and their brother Lazarus. There's people in the Bible that will get mentioned or have part of their story told and you wonder what was their life like? How did Jesus effect them before and after? I've always considered what it was like for Martha to be told by Jesus that Mary had the right idea by listening and not worrying so much about serving food. What was it like for Mary to wash Jesus's feet with her tears, perfume and hair while the disciples stood there and said that's too expensive to waste, the money should be given to the poor!
Or what was it like when Jesus said to Lazurus in his tomb, Lazurus rise up!?
This book answers all of these questions and more. This is one of the Biblical fiction books I can say was spot in with what the times were like, the clothes, the politics, the timeline, it followed all of it.
There was one thing though that I didnt like, well liked and didn't. They used scripture word for word when Jesus and most of the disciples spoke. Which was awesome. However, when they used the scripture it was King James Version. So while everyone else in the book spoke English similar to today, everytime Jesus spoke it was thee, thy, ye, and so forth. It stuck out like a sore thumb. I don't know if it was done on purpose to make Jesus stick out as a person or if they were just using King James Version for another reason. I've read books from Early English and Middle English, they're hard to get through so writing a book all in this kind of English is difficult, but instead of using King James maybe another version would've been better so it wasn't so different from the rest of the book.
That is the ok only thing about the book I have to critique, otherwise I loved this book and can't wait to read more by H.B

Something I love doing is imagining what the characters of people from history must have been like. Most of the time, we get such a small snippet of the person that, without conjecture, it can be difficult to ascertain what a person was truly like. I feel like this could not be more true than it is for scriptural figures. A novel containing Biblical characters can be quite tricky. There is much of historical accuracy that should be taken into account, as well as consideration for what type of person would have the experiences they are given. A well written Biblical/scriptural based novel is always enjoyable to read. And this was a very well written Biblical based novel.
Mary and Martha have always fascinated me and when I saw this book coming out, I knew I absolutely had to read it. Heather’s writing is beautiful, but I appreciated so much the attention to historical accuracy, while building a character for each of these people (from only a handful of given words from the Bible) that is tasteful and rich. She effectively turned names into people and made them so human, so relatable, but also the kind of people Jesus would have counted as friends. The family dynamic she builds with this group of siblings is powerful and I found my emotions stirred deeply many times, particularly over the grief the sisters must have experienced at Lazarus’ death. The writing is so evocative I felt as though I were in the same places, seeing the same things, feeling the same emotions. It is just so beautifully written and I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a deeper perspective on this Biblical group.
