About the author

Eugene H. Peterson was a pastor, scholar, author, and poet. For many years he was James M. Houston Professor of Spiritual Theology at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia. He also served as founding pastor of Christ Our King Presbyterian Church in Bel Air, Maryland. He had written over thirty books, including Gold Medallion Book Award winner The Message: The Bible in Contemporary Language a contemporary translation of the Bible. After retiring from full-time teaching, Eugene and his wife Jan lived in the Big Sky Country of rural Montana. He died in October 2018.

I started working through these morning meditations last October so I have finished, even though I will continue till the year's end. I hope that makes sense. Eugene Peterson is one of the three Reformed Christian thinkers I turn to the most, along with Steve Brown and R.C. Sproul. Peterson is a writer, pastor, poet and Bible translator. He is a gem and so is this devotional book.

Living The Message

31 December 2021. Another year passed with Eugene Peterson's devotional. Excited to begin again tomorrow ... part of my daily time with the Lord I value and pray into year on year.

To be honest, I have to say I was slightly disappointed in this collection of readings. I'm a huge fan of Eugene Peterson, enjoy reading The Message, from time to time, and love his books. This collection, however, left me wanting more, though.

I certainly don't hold that against the author, but was not overwhelmed with inspiration, as I expected to be. Perhaps I expected too much, based on past experience with the author.

There were certainly a number of readings that were inspirational and moving, so I definitely don't consider it a waste of time. Again, it just wasn't what I expected.

Though many of the messages are designed to assist and support pastors, I still found most of it very relevant and thought provoking. I will no doubt read it again.
