3-1/2 stars.

This is a good book for beginners. It explains the different kinds of yarn and stitches. It even shows crocheting charts. The patterns are nice. I did not like the instructions for left- handers. It just said do the opposite of the instructions for right-handers. My mother's 1948 crocheting books included illustrations for left-handers. I fail to see why modern books do not do the same.

Fantastic Find!

This looks really great on a tablet! Very clear, concise, easy to follow, and really covers all of the basics and advanced skills. Photos are good quality, too.

Great books to get started, but there are better books out there with more descriptions and vivid drawings that will make it easier. These days however, you can use youtube to clear up confusion

This is a crochet reference guide including over 150 stitch patterns. My review focuses on its utility as a stitch guide.

What I like:
The stitches are organized into 19 sections (Basic Stitches & Stitch Combinations; Shell Stitches & Shell Stitch Combinations; Chevrons, Ripples, & Waves; Stretched Stitches; Post Stitches; Clusters, Bobbles, & Popcorns; Ruffles & Cords; Leaves & Flowers; Blocks; Color Changing Rows; Colorwork; Bead Crochet; Edgings and Insertions; Lace Backgrounds; Filet; Irish Crochet; Snowflakes; Tunisian Crochet; CroKnit), making it easier to find stitches.

Stitch multiples are included so that you can easily adapt the stitches for a project of a different width.

This guide includes many types of crochet not generally included in English language stitch guides (e.g., Tunisian crochet, double-ended crochet or CroKnit, bead crochet).

There is a photograph of each stitch on the same page as the pattern.

Each stitch includes both pattern abbreviations and stitch symbols.

The book has a spiral binding, allowing it to lay flat so you can read and crochet at the same time.

The book also includes other reference information and patterns.

What I don't like (or what's missing):
Some of the stitches are made in an off white color, so it is hard to see stitch detail in the photographs.

Many of the stitches are pretty standard, so if you have any other stitch guides, there is likely to be a lot of overlap.

There is no pattern difficulty rating listed.

I give this book 4 stars as an overall crochet reference guide, but only 3 stars a stitch guide, since if you are a "stitch guide junkie" like me there will be a lot of overlap with your other stitch guides.

This is a good book with lots of great information for a learner. However I like more real pictures rather than sketches of how to do it. It does have some good pictures of how different swatches of stitches are supposed to look so if your looking for a pattern book for ideas of various patterns to try and learn this is good for that. It also has some things you can make at the back of the book, however there are no easy or beginner projects they are all intermediate. This is not a beginners book, but rather a next step book after you have mastered the basics in my opinion. I am putting it down for now after reading the beginning on tools, basics, yarns, etc and going back to one of my other books that had lots of super easy beginners projects and I'll check this one out again when I have mastered more of the basics!

This is just such a wonderful book, it is spiral bound and laid out just like I would wish. Each stitch is described with excellently clear illustrations and text with the symbol alongside, the stitch patterns library works logically from easy to harder stitches and the small selection of patterns are simple and inspiring. Unfortunately the book can't be used as a beginners book for the UK because the stitches given are American crochet, what they call single crochet we in the UK call double crochet, their double crochet is treble. My concern would be that if I learned US crochet it would be more difficult to switch to UK crochet. It is such a shame, this would otherwise be the perfect starter book.
