The Dark Before the Light

Rate this book
It’s always darkest before the light… Defeated in battle, the fractious alliance of Goltar, Spine Patriots, and the Midnight Sun Free Company are chased across the Spine Nebula by the Endless Night and their sea monster allies, the Tyzhounes. Abandoning the nebula is not an option. For the free trader skipper, Lenworth Jenkins, the people of its fifteen tormented worlds are the cause he’s been searching for all his life. The Midnight sisters, Sun and Blue, can’t abandon their people trapped in the nebula or its fabulous prospects of wealth and opportunity. On a water world behind enemy lines, Branco, the former Binnig spy is dying. Can he make a difference one last time? As Endless Night stretches across the nebula, those who still resist must dig deep and believe that however dire the situation, this is the dark before the light.

An average story in the 4H universe.

The storyline of this book still is not as enjoyable as other storylines in the 4H universe. This book brought in too many alien races without enough information or reason why they should have been mentioned. It was not interesting enough to keep me engrossed and I put it down many times. Not a fan of this sidebar to the 4H universe.

Once more unto the breach…
The Dark before the Light begins right where Endless Night ended. We are still in the nebula, the good guys are still in trouble, Branco is still swimming, Blue is still half-crazy and Sun is … well, really, really pissed that Branco isn’t in the neighbourhood. As for Gloriana, she is still hell-bent on implementing her Veetanho plan.
That one, that was only for the good guys… Because we have bad guys, well actually lots of them: the Endless night, the rogue cartel aiming at making lots of money… the Tyzhounes, who really love double-dealings…
And in the middle, some troubled souls caught in the cross-fire… Including a Sumatozou gate mistress, for example…
In the book, we get the confirmation of what the Endless engine on Aneb 4 is (Spoiler: it is NOT a F11 synthetisation facility…) and we even see it in action.
The pacing of the book is very good, the many points of view (protagonists and antagonists) well- orchestrated and we are nearing a reckoning.
We also learn a bit more about what drives Gloriana and … the compartments around Branco’s mind implemented by the Binnig techs begin to crumble, leading to him delving into memories he apparently wanted to vanish. It makes for some disturbing reading as those are childhood memories, but it gives Branco some more depth.
As with Endless night, the book ends on a Cliffhanger and I can’t wait to learn how the whole conflict in the Nebula resolves. Because, quite frankly, if the good guys don’t win here, the galaxy is in for some rougher times.

A great instalment

Another superb instalment to The Guild Wars arc, lots of drama ,action and intrigue along with new players. One insanely annoying character dropped my rating by one star unfortunately. This is a must read if you are a fan.

Wow

Huge info dump on the Golkar in an amazing story with weapons beyond comprehension in a universe with a lot of hidden evils.

Awesome

A stunning mix of action and storyline, with the antagonists just one step ahead of the heros! This series continues to grow into epic proportions!

My least favorite of the 4HU stories, way to long and way to many characters that it is hard to care about at all. I won't read any more of these stories about the Midnight Sun company.
