The Dukes' Pact #4

The Baron's Dangerous Contract

Rate this book
An audacious lady and an adventurous lord.

Miss Penny Darlington, daughter of the famed horseman Lord Mendbridge, has spent the past two seasons happily flirting with Lord Cabot. On the night of the Tudor ball, all of her ideas are crushed. The lord showed her, in no uncertain terms, how inconsequential she really was. She would prefer to nurse her bruised feelings in private, but her father has invited Lord Cabot to stay with them at Newmarket for the races. Penny vows she will never afford the lord another opportunity to sting her.

Lord Cabot well knows he allowed his temper to get the better of him. Miss Darlington left the Tudor Ball in near tears, he was shunned by all who overheard him, and even the hostess glowered at him. He’d not meant what he said and has every expectation that Miss Darlington will laugh it off when she discovers him staying at her house in Newmarket. In any case, he has a far more urgent problem to solve—he’s entered his filly in the thousand guinea stakes and does not actually have the stake.

As Penny and Lord Cabot circle each other warily and various persons work to keep them apart, a shady moneylender enacts a villainous plot. The lord’s world is about to shatter and only Penny can save him from ruin.

On the other hand, she might just allow him to hang himself in a noose of his own making.

By the time I was eleven, my Irish Nana and I had formed a book club of sorts. On a timetable only known to herself, Nana would grab her blackthorn walking stick and steam down to the local Woolworth’s. There, she would buy the latest Barbara Cartland romance, hurry home to read it accompanied by viciously strong wine, (Wild Irish Rose, if you’re wondering) and then pass the book on to me. Though I was not particularly interested in real boys yet, I was very interested in the gentlemen in those stories—daring, bold, and often enraging and unaccountable. After my Barbara Cartland phase, I went on to Georgette Heyer, Jane Austen and so many other gifted authors blessed with the ability to bring the Georgian and Regency eras to life.

I would like nothing more than to time travel back to the Regency (and time travel back to my twenties as long as we’re going somewhere) to take my chances at a ball. Who would take the first? Who would escort me into supper? What sort of meaningful looks would be exchanged? I would hope, having made the trip, to encounter a gentleman who would give me a very hard time. He ought to be vexatious in the extreme, and worth every vexation, to make the journey worthwhile.

I most likely won’t be able to work out the time travel gambit, so I will content myself with writing stories of adventure and romance in my beloved time period. There are lives to be created, marvelous gowns to wear, jewels to don, instant attractions that inevitably come with a difficulty, and hearts to break before putting them back together again. In traditional Regency fashion, my stories are clean—the action happens in a drawing room, rather than a bedroom.

As I muse over what will happen next to my H and h, and wish I were there with them, I will occasionally remind myself that it’s also nice to have a microwave, Netflix, cheese popcorn, and steaming hot showers.

I have realized that any book that centers around horses is not for me. There is endless talk of horses and this bores me to death. Other than that no matter how much I tried, I could not like Lord Cabot.

Penny Darlington, only daughter of well-respected horseman Lord Mendbridge, has enjoyed keeping company with and coming to know Lord Cabot. Her fragile hopes for more with him are summarily dashed when his remarks at a ball reveal just how little she means to him. She hopes to tend her hurt in private only to find her father has invited horse-mad Lord Cabot to stay with them for the Newmarket races. Penny decides to keep to herself and give him no further opportunity to hurt her.

Lord Henry Cabot is ashamed at having let his temper get away with him. He didn’t mean to cause harm and is hopeful Penny will be able to have a laugh at his expense and move on so they can cohabit peacefully. He has a bigger problem in trying to scrounge up the money to cover the entrance of his filly in the thousand guinea stakes.

Penny and Henry lead each other on an unwitting chase with those around them striving to keep them apart and a dubious moneylender enacts a nefarious plot with the potential to ruin Henry unless Penny can thwart him.

This story was sweet, but perhaps a bit too sweet. There was a nice build up of self-realization and growth between Henry and Penny, but it only amounted to a rather tepid declaration and no steam at all. After such build up, this was a letdown for me and made the detailed descriptions of each character’s actions seem rather tedious in hindsight. All that build up was entertaining enough but it never amounted to much and the danger and suspense I expected from the title never manifested. The title itself doesn’t make much sense as Henry has the courtesy title of viscount, not baron, and the danger never really reaches its full potential. The self-discovery and development shown by Henry and Penny was nice but not enough to keep me fully invested. The supporting characters were fun, and Henry’s cluelessness was as frustrating as it was funny. I was looking for more real communication between Henry and Penny and without that the romance fell a bit flat. I liked that Penny was a respected horsewoman in her own right and it was gratifying to see her finally find her backbone and learn to stand up to the hurts of life. Overall, this was an okay read and there was nothing wrong with the writing, but I wanted more from it.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher via NetGalley. This in no way impacted on my view.

After three of the heirs of the Dukes' Pact have married, Henry Roland, Viscount Cabot, is the next one to face his own love story. For the past two years, even before his father started to meddle in his business, Henry has been spending time with Miss Penny Darlington, discussing horses and generally enjoying their time together, but after he ruthlessly insulted her at a recent ball, both she and the rest of the ton have shunned him. With his allowance cut in half, Henry can't afford to pay the entry free for his filly at Newmarket, so goes to a disreputable moneylender, which sparks a series of events that could be dangerous to both himself, and to Penny's family, whom he is staying with. Will Penny be able to forgive Henry for his actions at the ball, or will her hurt and pain lead to them both being unable to find their happy ending?

As soon as this book became available to request on NetGalley, I immediately jumped at the chance, and started reading as soon as I was approved. I've enjoyed each of the previous books in the series, and have been waiting for Penny and Henry's story ever since we saw their chemistry and connection. We start this book off with the engagement of Lily and Lord Ashworth, which sparks Henry into a bad mood and he insults Penny's knowledge of horses, and acts like he's just been humouring her for the last two seasons. A lot of people heard his insult, and it's left Penny feeling despondent, and a little heartbroken. She knows that it's nearly time to head off to Newmarket for the races, and has a horse in the races too, so can't wait to escape London and the gossip. However, Penny's father, the renowned horseman Lord Mendbridge, announces that he's invited Cabot to stay with them, and she doesn't know how to treat the meetings. I really felt for Penny and her heartbreak here, and loved how her friends, family, and even the servants, tried to protect her from further hurt. Yeah, okay, the servants took it a little far with all of the mischief they were up to with Henry's belongings, and his bedroom, but it showed they cared for the family, and would do anything for their mistress. My favourite had to be Doom, though, who was just a little ball of terror, who didn't appreciate people pandering to him, and wanted to do anything for Miss Darlington.

The plot line surrounding the moneylender, and the way he tried to cause Henry to lose, and be in more debt, was fantastic to read. Yes, I did see how it would be resolved coming a mile off, but I still really enjoyed reading it all, and seeing how the money lender got his comeuppance in the end. The whole matter helped to push Penny and Henry together again, and I felt that the way Henry apologised, and made up for his past actions was perfect for the couple, and think that the way Kitty was introduced, and her interactions with Lord Grayson may be setting up for Grayson's own book. Only two more left in the series, and I'm looking forward to them!

The Baron's Dangerous Contract
Book 4 in the Dukes' Pact Series
Rating: 3 stars
Thank you to the publisher for the ARC given through NetGalley for review. All opinions are my own.

This is the first book of the series that I read. It can be read as a stand alone. Also this is the first book by this author that I read too. What caught my attention in requesting this ARC was the synopsis. I really was looking forwards to reading how Henry was going to grovel, redeem himself to Penny after how he treated her after some time of flirting with each other.
Sadly, the romance between Henry and Penny felt a little short. Both leads spend very few time with each other. Henry attempts several times to apologize for being rude, but he does a bad job at it and Penny doesn't easily forgive him. Poor Henry he tried and I liked that as soon as he hurt her feelings he knew he had done wrong. Though thinking that Penny would easily forgive him or pretend that nothing had happened was a little insulting to her. I had fun reading how her house staff tried to make his life miserable while he stayed at her house.
I did enjoy the world of horse racing that we are introduced to and I liked how knowledgeable Penny was about horses.

Book 4 of the series, and I confess they are a bit samey, but still hugely entertaining. This is the horse-mad couple, so anyone not interested in vast amounts of equine discussion should steer clear.

Here’s the premise: Penny Darlington and Henry, Viscount Cabot have been good friends for two years now. They meet frequently, and at balls he generally takes the supper dance so they can talk more - about their mutual love of horses. They get on like a house on fire, and she’s even begun to think there may be something in it. But then, in one night, it’s all ruined. He tells her curtly that she knows nothing about horses. He knows at once that he’s made a mull of it, and hurt her deeply, but even when he’s invited to stay with the family at Newmarket, she’s so dismissive of him that even his apologies don’t sway her.

While he tries his best to return to the comfortable and enjoyable relationship they had earlier, and she continues to freeze him out, he has another problem. His father’s attempts to persuade him to marry have reduced his funds to nothing and he has a race-winning horse, he hopes, to enter at Newmarket. He resorts to borrowing the money he needs knowing a win will cover his debts, but the money-lender isn’t prepared to leave things to chance, and sets up a nefarious scheme to ensure the horse loses.

Observant readers will see how the plot will unfold long before the author reveals it, but that doesn’t make it uninteresting or boring. There is, however, a certain amount of repetition in the romances of this series. They all seem to conform to the enemies to lovers trope, wherein the hero discovers his true feelings long before the heroine, and he therefore has to fight (or scheme or grovel) in order to win her. In book 2, the hero’s dare-anything personality made this fun, but by book 4, there are fewer attractions to the process, and I just wanted the protagonists to understand their own feelings and get on with it. Still, the author has a deft hand with side characters, particularly those of the servant class or even lower, and this keeps things humming along nicely, even when the hero and heroine need their ears boxed.

Anachronisms? Well, there were a few. Rube annoyed me (again) and the dance cards (again), and rucksacks weren’t a thing until 1866 or thereabouts. Also, how precisely did the hero manage to ride from Newmarket to Devon, then to London, and then to Bath, all apparently in three days? He changed horses often, the book says, but really, hiring riding horses every few miles wasn’t really a thing in the Regency. You’d need to hire a post chaise and team, which came with postilions who were restricted to 7 miles an hour. One other oddity - the title talks about a baron, but there doesn’t seem to have been a baron in the book at all, so not sure what that’s about.

But you know what? None of these quibbles mattered. I still really, really enjoyed the book, the author’s writing style just suits what I like to read (I particularly love the way the characters are constantly talking at cross purposes - very clever! And funny!), so I’m going to go for five stars. Again.

Excited to visit the series again and this time with Lord Cabot and Penny Darlington. Unfortunately Cabot is not happen to see his friends succumb to the marriage mart and meet the demands of the pact. Thus, he leveled a scathing remark to Penny and she had taken off.

Penny had spent time with Cabot for the last two years. They had a mutual love of horses and conversed on the subject regularly. One remark from Cabot though, really hurt her feelings. In she was in today's world, hopefully she would have blasted him!

But as fate intervenes, as it often does, these two wind up back together as Penny's father has invited Cabot to stay at their home for a house party while they are at the races! What's a girl to do?

An entertaining story that will keep you turning the pages to see how it would turn out. Of course, you need to read and you will be pleasantly surprised!

Squeaky clean (precisely one use of the word “kiss” and nothing else), which is not my preference, and at time the romance was overshadowed by all the goings-on, but I liked it well enough. Not very angsty but some nice misunderstandings. 85% about horses and races, 10% about servants and money lenders, 5% about the couple and their relationship.

Having read the previous books in this entertaining series, I was very happy to receive a copy of this romance. Lord Cabot shot himself in the foot when he insulted Penny Darlington, little realising just how deeply he had wounded her feelings. However, certain that she would just shrug his misplaced words off, he goes about far more urgent matters, such as finding the money for the stake to enter his filly for a race at Newmarket. Events conspire against Lord Cabot on more than one front: Penny has not forgotten nor forgiven the insult; the servants in the Menbridge household take up cudgels on behalf of their mistress; Cabot's own friends attempt to thwart any possibility of there being a reconciliation between him and Penny in an effort to put an end to the Dukes' pact; and then, of course, there is the unscrupulous moneylender who will do whatever it takes to have his way. The plot of this story moves at a good pace as both Cabot and Penny prepare for the big race. When at the last moment, plans go awry, Penny finds herself having to make a snap decision, revealing the depths of the feelings she has for Cabot. This novel is well written and entertaining, keeping one guessing through to the end whether Cabot will ever win the fair lady. One can only hope that his mischievous friends will eventually get their comeuppance. I received a copy of this book as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.

I was looking forward to reading Lord Henry Cabot's story and how he'd fall in love. He's been enjoying Miss Penny Darlington's company for two seasons now and their extensive conversations about horses. Even though the Duke's Pact has demanded all 6 of their sons marry or face financial ruin, Henry has resisted and when a third of his friends marries, Henry reacts badly and insults Penny. Penny never saw the blow/insult coming and she's vowed to ignore Henry from now on, that is, until her father invites him as his guest for the annual races. Will Henry be able to convince Penny he's sorry for his ill-timed comment or will she dismiss him still?

My first little criticism was about the title of the book as I didn't know who the baron was. Henry is the son of a duke and I didn't see anywhere in the book where he was called a baron. Besides that, I was looking forward to reading the next story in the Duke's Pact series. Ms. Archer has woven delightful stories about each son that have already married. Henry was a bit of an ass to Penny at the Tudor Ball, taking out his frustration on her, but he has no idea his off-hand comment would cause her such heartache. He must spend the rest of the book trying to win her good opinion back. Along the way, he realizes the truth of his feelings. I liked Penny, but I didn't like that she'd fall apart over one comment especially since she'd know Henry for two seasons already. Her character is redeemed though as she refuses to forgive Henry right away and that sends Henry a clear message that he'd hurt her feelings more than he'd ever realized. While there were several twists and turns including an evil moneylender, poisoned horses and a dosed jockey, Penny and Henry finally do have their HEA.

I'm looking foward to reading the last two stories of the duke's sons--Grayson and Dalton. What does Ms. Archer plan for these two? Will Grayson and Kitty be the next story?

I voluntarily read the advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

Thank you to NetGalley, Dragonblade Publishing and Ms. Archer for the opportunity to read an ARC of this book. An honest review was requested but not required.

I must admit I was looking forward to Penny’s “story” as I too was (am?) a horse-mad girl. It was clear from the previous book that Penny and Henry had a strong connection to each other and I was expecting this book to be terrific.

I really wasn’t expecting that Henry would be thoughtlessly cruel at the ball because he was in a bad mood. But moreso, I wasn’t expecting that an inconsiderate remark would cause intrepid Penny to completely shut down. One dunderheaded moment from him and she was totally unraveled? I can’t even imagine how such a naïve and sheltered person would – or could! – function in a relationship.

Luckily, after quite a bit of hijinks and shenanigans involving practically every character in the book, things were smoothed out and both Henry and Penny had their come-to-Jesus moment of realization. Henry realized that women don’t have the luxury of sitting around and taking their time on the “marriage mart” and Penny realized she needed to be thicker-skinned.

It's for the best that things worked out for Henry and Penny, as really, it would be impossible to find two more well-suited individuals. This was an enjoyable return to the Duke’s Pact series, and Ms. Archer definitely brought her usual wit and humor. It also featured an almost total lack of physical exchanges (I think there was one kiss/embrace, total) if that’s something you look for in a story. Honestly, the story is engaging enough that I hardly noticed the lack of steam.

I am certainly looking forward to Grayson’s installment – curious as to who will “tame” the “lover of all women, committed to none” free spirit – but even more I’m looking forward to dour (and frankly, slightly villainous) Dalton’s story. I am eager to see how Ms. Archer redeems him.

The Baron's Dangerous Contract by Kate Archer is another in the series, The Duke's Pact. Penny Darlington had just received a very rude public set down by Henry Roland, Lord Cabot. She was beyond aghast. She had thought they were friends, with their common interest in horses and all. Then, to add insult to injury, her father invites him to stay at their home during their time in Newmarket for the races. Could things get any worse? It seems they could, and did. Henry because of the Duke's Pack, had not had the money to enter his horse in the race, so after being turned down by his grandmother, he went to a moneylender. This particular chap decided to make more money off of Henry than the usury he charged and set about rigging the race. It turned into a huge mess with all kinds of ramifications.

Being without money when one is used to having it, can make for an interesting story. One of the funniest things in the book is the confusion caused by three young men living together. Unused to managing for themselves, two of them not having valets allowed for all kinds of messes, including an entertaining game of, "Whose cravat is this?" Penny was still so angry she could hardly see straight. And her friends agreed. Her father, who didn't pay attention to society workings, didn't even know. That made it all worse. The apologies were the best, though. Several unaccepted apologies. This was a good story with a fairly fast-paced plot and excellent characters. There is nothing a woman likes less than to be insulted about her knowledge on a subject in which she is extremely knowledgeable. It was witty and humorous and I enjoyed every minute.

I was invited to read a free ARC of The Baron's Dangerous Contract by Dragonblade, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own. #netgalley #thebaronsdangerouscontract

Another great book by the amazing Kate Archer! How does she do it? Her characters are clever, smart, strong and really draw you in. The secondary characters are often very funny but also very real; they’re either a bit headstrong or focused on their own well-being, and they often make you laugh. For example the Earl of Dalton’s butler and other staff, who like to drink the wine from his cellar as soon as he has left. All these funny characters pop up in every single book and are sometimes caught with their proverbial hand in the cookie jar, which is incredibly funny. Besides these fun parts, the book is very well written, has a good story and is well-paced.
Book four in this series is similar to book two in that the female main character is angry at the male main character, who then does his utmost to get into her good graces again, this time Penny and Lord Cabot. Their story was well written, and it keeps you wanting to turn the page. Both main characters are horse mad, which I particularly love! I also specifically liked Doom, Penny’s stable hand. But as I’ve said, there are lots of interesting characters. The six sons of the dukes all make an appearance and of course the remaining unmarried earls feel like they should mind his business and cause a lot of confusion and hassle. And again there is a villain. You don't want to put the book down because you want to know how the story ends!
I can highly recommend this book, as well as the other books in this series. Although it can be read as a standalone, you will definitely enjoy it much more if you start with book one*, as these stories are all connected. And they’re all fun, so why not read all of them? You won’t regret it!

This is the fourth book in the series & another page turner. Six elderly Dukes have made a pact, they want their sons to marry, so have cut their allowances until they do. There was always an attraction between Henry & Penny but I never expected him to be so cruel. I loved the road to their HEA parts of which were hilarious, stones & congealed broth! I loved the horse mad Penny who rescued Henry even though she was furious with him. I loved Henry who was a bit hapless but endearing as he tried to apologise but kept putting his foot in it. The pair weren’t helped by Henry’s friends, I look forward to those two especially Dalton falling hard. A charming read , I also loved doom & Kitty

Six Duke’s agreed to pact to force their son’s to marry, they want grandchildren. They want their sons to marry and produce an heir. Since the decree was established three sons have since married and there’s three to go. The toughest three are left and the Duke’s decide to tighten the purse strings and see what happens.
Henry Roland, Lord Cabot has been flirting with Miss Penny Darlington for the last two seasons, so when insults her at a ball she’s humiliated and furious that she’s wasted so much time on him.. She thought he like her mind and her knowledge about horses after all she’s the daughter of famed horseman, Lord Mendbridge and his famous horse stables. Unbeknownst to her, her father invites Henry to his estate for the duration of the Newmarket horse race. Henry knows he needs money for the entry fee any way he can get it even from a moneylender. His actions have lasting effects he could not foresee as the moneylender has his own agenda. A good story of two people attracted to each other, who understand each other, and they have their love horses in common. Penney’s servants and her aunt are fun secondary characters in this story. But Henry does not want to marry to please his father the Duke so will love change his mind? I have voluntarily read and reviewed the excellent book.

I have been tearing through this series at a break-neck speed (Lulz, horse joke), but I needed to pause to write a review about this one.

Of all the male leads so far in this series I find Cabot to be the most unlikeable. He is basically a horse dude bro with the emotional depth of a teaspoon.

I have to say, the side characters in this one are pretty fun and interesting. I will now continue on to the next book, because Kitty seems a dear, and I would like to read more of her.

Thanks to Netgalley, dragonblade Publishing and the author for an Advance Reader Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Once again, I have to say that this author brings her characters to life with humour and empathy in such a delightful way. This fourth instalment of the series is no exception.

Penny and Lord Cabot have always gotten along - their mutual love of horses getting them through more than one boring ball. But when Lord Cabot makes a comment that the secretly sensitive Penny cannot shrug off, their friendship seems irreparably damaged. He thinks he can save things when he comes to stay at her house but finds himself pit against other suitors who seem to value Penny's worth. And since when did he become a suitor? Isn't he part of the Heir's Pact who are sworn not to marry until they are good and ready?

He has a horse in an important race and is up to his eyeballs in debt - now is not the time to be thinking of winning Penny's affections back. But Lord Cabot's heart has other plans.

Lots of fun and a bit of intrigue make this an action-packed read with a wonderful ending.

Lord Cabot and Lady Darlington have spent the last two seasons flirting until Cabot lashes out and says some things he does not mean. When he is invited to stay at Darlington's home by her father they must figure out how to deal with each other, Cabot is set on making amends and returning to normal but Darlington wants nothing more than to avoid him.

The book switches perspectives from Cabot, Darlington, various servants, and other characters to give a refreshing view of what is going on. The characters all have depth and emotion though, making it easy to relate and follow along.

While the book is not that long nothing in the plot feels rushed, the drama and issues they face as well as the emotions and romance. Overall it's a very great romance with a great plot with everything resolved nicely in the end, without feeling rushed or forced. I cannot recommend this book enough and I cannot wait to read the rest of the series!!

Thank you to the publishers for giving me early access in exchange for an honest review.

DNF at 26%. This book was SO. ABSOLUTELY. BORING.

The story:
The main guy let his testicles run away with him and decided to tell the girl who knows more about horses than almost anyone on the continent that she knows nothing about it and surely he must know more. He then proceeds to be shocked when everyone else snubs him for being a whole bitch. Then he's even more shocked when the lady who he mansplained to isn't suddenly thrilled to see him again. Surely she knows it was a joke, right? He'll apologize once and things will be fine again, no problem. The only thing that was at all amusing in this book is that all the servants gang up to be shitty to him.

In reality:
The novel is a play by play of every single thought that goes through the heads of like 15 different characters, plus every conversation they have. It's been days and weeks in the novel and still only 26% through it because the author thought we needed an entire London season in novel form. Then comes the additional perk of having characters that are not interesting at all.

Miss Penny Darlington is the daughter of a famed horseman and loves her life around horses. Growing up she has acquired a lot of knowledge of racehorses and is confident in her understanding of them. So much so, when Lord Mendbridge, Henry Roland, was stating his thought, she voiced her opinion. Even though, they have spent the last two seasons happily flirting with each other; Henry was not pleased and showed her just how trivial she is. Then he accepts an invitation from her father to spend time at their estate. Just how will she handle that? But poor Henry has other problems he needs to solve. How to get the money to pay his horse’s entry fee for the race to be run. With his allowance cut in half, he visits his grandmother and finds no salvation from her. When he finds a money lender that gives him the money, things start to change and not for the better. What an adventure these two have, great characters and a plot that you will want to know how it ends.

This dragged at times for me and did improve as the story progressed.

If you are looking for a very romantic story, this will fall short. Our two are at odds over 3/4th of the story and don't understand each other until the very end. This is a clean story and I didn't feel a connection til the end.

There is some violence and a interesting story line with the secondary character's. I've read the stories out of order and it is a stand alone.

I am confused by the Title of the story because several times the H title is Viscount, never is he referred to as a Baron. I wanted to know how the H and the money lender resolved everything after the race. Did the H find out who tried to ruin the race?

No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, no romance and clean. I can't improve on the blurb, just stating what I found reading it (ljb)

6 Dukes threatened to cut their sons off from their allowance if they didn’t get married. Lord Cabot is the 4th future Duke. He paired up with Penny Darlington at every ball as she is as obsessed with horses as he is. He made the mistake of one cutting remark in public which humiliated Penny and she believed that to be his true nature showing itself.
This book focuses on Lord Cabot trying to get back in her good books and out from under the debt he has found himself in with the access to his funds cut.
I didn’t enjoy this one as much as the others in the series. I again liked Penny and enjoyed the horse racing and the skulduggery going on with tempering with the horses but I thought Lord Cabot was a bit of a twit and that part of the storyline was a bit more lengthy than it needed to be. I did still like it and will read the next 2 in the series.

This is the 4th book of the series and while it can be read by itself, it is so much better when you read the other three first. But this series is well worth the read and you will not want to put it down when you start them.

Lady Penny Darlington has been happily flirting with Henry Roland, Lord Cabot for two seasons, she is hoping it turns into something. Until, in a fit of frustration, he insults her. His words hurt her more than he ever realized. When he does he grovels, begs and does everything in his power to get her to forgive him. His friends are trying to tear them apart to try to "end the pact" about them all having to marry. I did enjoy this book, and am excited for the next.

The Baron's Dangerous Contract will hold you captivated from the moment you begin the journey until the very end as six wily old Dukes make a pact to see their sons married. Six carefree sons make a pact to not marry! But three have already have found themselves married to their love of their lives. Now the fourth one, Lord Cabot is racing to prove himself to Penny Darlington but along the way he will hurdles to overcome come. Penny Darlington has been hurt by some careless words Lord Cabot spoke to her during a ball. As the two travel a cautious path to finding their happy ever after two of Lord Cabot friends work to break them up. Kate Archer has written a wonderful story and  filled with characters that are well thought and out come off the pages and pull you into their tale, heartfelt dialogue and an enjoyable plot that bring this read together perfectly!

Trying to make amends

I love the Dukes Pact series. It’s time for Henry, Lord Cabot to find his happiness if only he can find the money to race his horse. Penny has known Lord Cabot for 2 seasons. They dance, he escorts her into to dinner and she believes he is the one. Unfortunately Henry not only puts his foot in his mouth he does it during a Ball where others over heard. Penny was so insulted by Lord Cabot that she left the ball almost in tears but she did cry all night in her room.
Penny will never forgive him but her father has invited Lord Cabot to stay at there home during the horse races. How will Penny get along with her enemy in her home. A beautifully written story with redemption and love mixed together.

Vexation and frustration cause Henry Roland, Viscount Cabot, to lose his temper and embarrass Lady Penny Darlington at Lady Hathaway's Tudor Ball. She left in tears. Not smart Henry! He thinks she will easily forgive him, but Henry has another think coming. Horses, horse races at New Market, moneylenders, jockeys, lies and misunderstandings, make it very difficult for Henry to pursue Penny and make the right apology....and confess his love. Snicker, chuckle, laugh out, a clean traditional Regency romance.
This series is super entertaining!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

Enjoying this series

Another entertaining book I enjoyed it as much as the earlier ones in the series However, I wish more attention were given to editing, Lord Ashworth turned into Lord Ashbridge before the end of the book. Even so, I look forward to the rest of the series I dearly hope Lord Burke gets his own book. He has been a favorite character of mine since the beginning of series. I would like to see him take the leading role even though his father was not part of the pact.

This took me longer to “read” as I could only do so via my Alexa reading to me. (Side note: I have yet to try an AI Audiobook - Virtual Voice? - but I have found that the Kindle Assisted Reader, as set up on my Alexa really tolerable. But NOT via the App or my actual Kindle. Those voices are dire).

This is book 4 in the Saga. Head and shoulders better than book 2. An enjoyable tale, a fascinating subplot and very enjoyable outcomes for all of the various protagonists (except for Farthington)!

I shall press onto book 5, although I’m not sure if I like the remaining Dukes…

Henry is one of the last few heirs of the Dukes who have not married and he plans to keep it that way. He enjoys spending time with Penny who is even more knowledgeable than he is about horses. After insulting her and hurting her feelings, he finds himself a guest in their home. Henry gets in over his head with a moneylender and Penny must come to his rescue. I enjoy reading this series. I received an ARC from NetGalley and Dragonblade Publishing for my honest review.
