Things pick up a little in the second volume, even if most of it is a flashback to the beginnings of the relationship between two side characters who may end up being more interesting than the main characters. The leads do get a chapter at the end that promises to clear up some ambiguity in their relationship . . . in the next volume . . . maybe. I'll be back to find out.

With Hibiki’s hand injured, the band’s debut appears to be in jeopardy. Except Minato’s got an idea, but then she sees some people who knew her attending the concert, so the debut is, indeed, in jeopardy. Afterwards, she witnesses something she shouldn’t and that’ll be a conversation.

If the plot of this series isn’t exactly breaking new ground, it more than makes up for it with the characterization. These are some of the best manga characters I’ve spent time with in a while and their interactions can be downright fascinating.

Minato continues to be such a magnificent portrait of what somebody with self-esteem looks like, minus the self-esteem part. And as much as she was dragged into the whole band situation, she’s grateful enough that she comes through in the clutch when it looks like Hibiki’s injury might cost them their show. Twice, even.

And the art is here to be amazingly descriptive in its own right - the expressions and big moments (the end of the concert has a spectacular bit in it) just add to the writing and I love the way everybody in the story emotes. You could read this sans dialogue and still have a very good time.

There was clearly a vibe between Chika and Sakiko in the first volume and, while it seemed like that meant two of these bandmates were already dating, it turns out to be a little a lot more complicated than that.

I would have pegged Sakiko as the most boring character in this series and the truth couldn’t be further from it. She’s absolutely compelling during an extended flashback sequence and it feels like there’s so much to her story we still don’t get and what we get is a LOT.

For all her appearances, it turns out that Chika is the follower in their whatever they have together and Sakiko keeps her dangling. It’s not precisely unhealthy, the two of them are friends and care about one another, but it’s clearly not exactly the best idea either.

It provides a great contrast to the concurrent storyline as Hibiki tries to figure out how Minato feels about her. Strictly for Minato’s benefit, of course, even if none of her friends believe that in the slightest (nor should they).

There’s some believable fumbling as they try and sort this all out, with Hibiki so focused on the answer that she completely loses sight of Minato’s nature and her needs and nearly ruins her chance to find out. It’s a nice reminder at the work you have to put in and how your actions can be misinterpreted if you’re not clear.

This is shaping up to be a great series. After Hibiki’s pushiness finally coerces Minato into the band, this gives way to some real drama and the slightest hint of potential romance. These two see the good in one another, but the real trick is clearly convincing Minato that she has any to begin with.

5 stars - I was going to give this 4 the whole time I was reading it, but when I went over it again for this review, I legitimately couldn’t see a single thing I’d change. A good start has lead to a potentially great series.

The side couple gets several chapters to shine and in doing so kind of outshines the main couple. Having a pleasant time with this one.

“Hello, Melancholic” (3 volume manga series) by Yayoi Ohsawa. I had high hopes for this series based on the first volume, which set up teen girls discovering a love of music performance on their own terms, separate from past experiences and expectations, and bonding together as a group. It delivered this but lacked the some of the depth I was hoping for based on the set up. Ultimately a decent 3 star series but not a must-read by any means.

3.5🌟

I had a bit more conflicting feelings about this volume than the previous one. I still am enjoying the series, but one of the characters is bringing me down.

Sakiko’s whole vibe is off. I don’t quite get her. I hope we get more about her specifically as she doesn’t make much sense to me. I can see why Chika would be alarmed by her behavior and how that becomes the way they get closer. However, I don’t really get why Sakiko would engage in such risky behavior in the first place. I also don’t know if it’s just because we’re seeing it through Chika’s pov, but her aloof way is unnerving. At least the ending of the volume made it seem like Sakiko really does love Chika, she might just be a bit of an oddball. That’s how I’m hoping things will progress since their whole relationship is just a bit iffy for me at the moment.

Now, if we focus on my beloved Minato and Hibiki 🤩 They continue being my everything. I loved that we got to see Minato break out of her shell a little during their festival performance. I also found Hibiki’s whole investigation trying to figure out Minato’s feelings super endearing! She can’t see what’s right under her nose, which is that she likes Minato right back! She’s just a little bit of an airhead when it comes to that, and it can make her say dumb things that agitate poor Minato’s delicate constitution 😂

Anyway. I’m definitely planning to continue this series!

I really love what a mess of miscommunication the side couple in this series is, they're so cute and seemingly comfortable with each other by this point but it's like telling each other anything properly would kill them. Fair, to be honest. I also remember not feeling the chemistry between the main characters in the first volume, but even though most of this volume is about the side couple, the few moments between Hibiki and Minato definitely established them far better, and I'm really excited to read the last volume <3

4 stars. Chika and Sakiko are so fucking cute! This volume was more focused on them and I didn’t mind that at all. They’re both interesting characters and I liked getting their backstories on how they met. We do also get Hibiki and Minato going on a ‘date’ because Hibiki wants to know how Minato feels about her. Just an overall really good volume.

You get a yuri, you get a yuri, you all get yuri!

This is turning out to be a rather interesting series. In addition to the 2 MC, now there's a senpai yuri couple, too. So things are getting interesting. The volume ends with our super tall MC being asked by her short MC how she truly feels, romantically. This after being dragged off to a cafe by one of the senpai when she accidentally saw the 2 senpai making out. I think there's going to be some real fireworks next volume! I look forward to it!

I got that I read volume 2 already but I read it again so at least now I have a better memory of what I read.

Because of Hibiki’s hand injury, the band starts to play at the concert but they are out of sync. Minato gets the idea to have the audience help despite feeling pressure from people that she recognizes in the crowd. Nothing really comes of this though as they don't have any interaction. She also sees something she wasn't suppose to but this leads in to the history and backstory of some of the other members in the band.

I enjoyed this volume. We get a look into the other bandmates relationship and how they got together. Though I dont think together is the right word. Chika and Sakiko's relationship is complicated but I also really enjoyed it more than Minato and Hibiki's relationship or progression of said relationship.

I look forward to seeing what happens in volume three. I wish this had more chapters.

I quite appreciated the side couple's backstory. It's a bit fucked up but they seem to be getting healthier and they clearly are good to each other (hopefully, for each other as well in the long term).
