Letters in the Dark

Cassandra

Abducted.
Caged.
Kidnapped.

They all mean the same thing. Hidden away and forgotten about by everyone. Everyone except the monster who put me here.
He stripped me of my freedom. He stripped me of my clothing. He’s a monster, and he’ll do whatever he wants with me.
But I will survive.
And I will wait.
He hides in the shadows, but I will learn to see in the dark.
And when the lights go out, I will show him the monster inside me.
If you live in the dark long enough, even the sweet ones must grow claws.

Monster

Soulless.
Psychopath.
Evil.

That’s what I’ve been told my entire life. If you looked at the trail of blood that follows me, you’d think they were right.
I never asked to be like this. I never asked to be different. I never asked to be a monster.
Something broke inside of me when I was born, and Cassandra Matheson is the only one who can fix me.
She’ll be the light to my darkness, the good to my evil.
And she’ll teach me what it is to be human.
Or she’ll never leave her cage.

As far as I understood from reading this adult fiction, it should not be considered erotica at all. Surprisingly, the story has a dark vibe, yet it was very deep and thought-provoking, which I liked a lot. The author reveals some harsh realities through the story, and some of the thoughts here were so meaningful that they really added value to the book.

This was his gift to her. A gift of vengeance. A gift of blood and pain. The only gifts that mattered.

Overall 5 stars
Plot 4 stars
Characters 6 stars
Extra 5 stars
Steaminess 2 stars

Overall
This book is nothing like what I’m used to reading. It’s weird, but super satisfying. The plot isn’t linear, but after a while it begins to make a lot of sense as to why the author decided to write it in this fashion.

I’m blown away by the way that it captured me, forcing me to feel the dark and light moments as though I was there in little five page snippets of misery and triumph.

Underneath the whole thing, a real love story with growth and understanding and all the flavors of amazing blossoms from nothing.

Plot: 4 Stars
The plot is weird as it takes place over their entire lives. The weirdness pushed me away a little bit initially, and the beginning was kind of slow which is why I gave it the 4 stars instead of 5.

I can’t tell you what changed around the 40% mark, but something does. Suddenly, the weirdness goes away and you’re sucked into the characters and the madness that they’re both going through. You have to finish it.

The plot is definitely the weakest part, but it almost always is in captive romances.

Characters: 6 Stars
The characters aren’t anything like me, but I got lost in them. At first, they’re both super cold and heartless, but they grow into so much more. It’s hard to explain the changes without ruining the plot, but it’s fucking great.

Extra: 5 Stars
What makes this book different than the entire catalog of captive romances? It’s the twists, the characters that are full of flaws, and the rawness of the whole thing. And the little ball of fur named Tigger.

Like I said, it’s weird, but it’ll give you a case of the feels for sure.

Steaminess
It’s worth it to note that there is very little in the way of sex compared to most dark romances. This is not an erotic romance.

Go read Letters in the Dark by Kit Rose. It’s fucking fantastic.

Kit Rose may be a new author, but if she keeps writing like this,i will be very interested in what she comes up with in the future.
(I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to read the ARC,even though i’m not on Amazon, and this review is my very own, honest opinion.)

For this one,a warning is necessary,it deals with some very dark issues.
If you have trouble with abuse, you should stay clear.
If not,this is a story that wíll,in the end,leave you with a sense of.....satisfaction.

Alternating between present and past, the build up of this story is steady and keeps you interested throughout.
That switch between now and before is necessary, and will start to make sense along the line.
What else can i say without spoiling the plot?
Some say monsters lurk in the dark.
But the worst monsters?
They do their worst in full view, for all to see.
Cassandra is going to understand who the real monster is......

Thank you Kit,for this very interesting dark gem!

This was his gift to her. A gift of vengeance. A gift of blood and pain. The only gifts that mattered.

This book was....weird. Good weird, but still weird.

'Letters in the dark' is a full length captive romance novel by Kit Rose. She is a new to me author but her books are unique and unlike anything I've read before.

This book deals with with some dark issues. If you are sensitive to subject matter dealing with abuse, then you should steer clear, otherwise you should definitely pick this book up. It is a captive romance but it isn't an erotic romance.

This book is different than the usual captive romances as the characters are realistically flawed and are dealing with their own issues. Both the MC's had problems and may come off as heartless at times but it's the circumstances that have made them so.

Like I said its weird, but it certainly was a unique page turner that had me completing the book in one sitting.

I can't say much without spoiling the plot but if you're looking for a short read, unlike anything you've read before, you should definitely check this book out, its fantastic.

Cassandra and “monster” were two very disturbed characters but I felt so much sympathy for them. I liked the plot definitely but the writing I found a bit strange if I’m honest. Saying that the writing may have been unusual for me but it certainly didn’t detract from the storyline which was really good for me. I would have liked a certain other character to have had something happen to them regardless of whether Cassandra cared what that person did. The ending was satisfactory and yet not either. I don’t know if author plans to do a sequel but I def would like to see what happens to Cassandra and Monster later! Good read

A truly captivating and twisting read. A bit of a psychological thriller meets a beauty and the beast, though in this tale both are broken. Cassandra has been living her life to help other though she ends up used by all and left by all. till she awakens in a room that is to be her cage by a monster who wants to learn and to feel. Well written with twists and turns, suspense, emotions and thrills.

Solid 4-star dark romantic thriller, and a debut novel by author Kit Rose.

This is not erotica - there are very few sex scenes, but the ones that are included are good. As usual, I could have done with more. ;)

The story surrounds Cassandra, a social worker who grew up in the foster system and endured a very rough childhood; and her captor, who Cassandra calls Monster.

Cassandra is kidnapped by Monster and locked in a small room. Her captor communicates with her via letters in a journal. He is a diagnosed sociopath and murderer, and wants to learn how to feel emotions. After tracking Cassandra for some time, he comes to believe that she is the only one who can help him understand how to feel human.

Cassandra isn't nearly as troubled as most of us might be about being kidnapped. She's been through much worse, and as captors go, Monster is pretty benevolent. For his part, Monster does seem genuinely interested in learning how to care about others.

This was a good read, but I must confess I did not feel a strong connection to either character. There was a connection there, one I felt especially in the last 20%, but it still felt I was reading about characters, not real people. Including more background information about each characters' life experiences would have been helpful. We get some glimpses, but it still felt somewhat clinical. I also think this book would have been much better being told in the first person, rather than the third. But this might just be me - I definitely prefer first person in general; I like to feel as though my characters are talking to me, sharing their stories with me.

All in all, I definitely recommend this book and it is phenomenal for a debut novel! Bravo, Kit Rose - I read this pretty much in one setting. :)

I had to really think on it.
It was dark and twisty. It was interesting. It was mostly written well.
But,
A few plot holes that needed addressed, especially about their past.
The letter thing was okay at 1st but became to. much of the story.
I needed a lot more action. This was mostly telling.
The back and forth of the past and present also got on my nerves. Not as much as most books with that element.
No real Adult Steam.
Just dark and twisty.

Epically amazing is the best way I can describe this book. It had me intrigued from the first page. I was hooked. It's dark but deep. Very psychological and suspenseful.

Monster's obsession with finding himself ran just as deep as his obsession with with Cassandra. He was so dark, disturbed and deadly but also intelligent, thoughtful and a mystery. Cassandra was level headed and a logical thinker under stress. She was just as calculated as Monster but in her own way. Definitely not the withering, crying type.
There's continual flash backs of past trauma and how things lead up to this point in the book which kept me guessing things as it went along. The author who wrote this book needs to give herself a big pat on the back because it was so well written with an unforgettable storyline and the most perfect ending to Monster and Cassandra's story.

What a twisted ride! I didn't see that coming. I really enjoyed this story. It had a little bit of everything. Suspense, thriller, maybe even romance. It was unique to anything I've read before!

This book is dark! There are some triggers. Just a heads up.

**Trigger Warning- there is talk of abuse on all levels**

Okay yes, I would totally classify this book a dark romance. This book hits on a lot of elements of someone who has their life change from a young age. The flashbacks of growing up in the system and what they endured was heartbreaking. However, you will see that they are almost disconnected from life in general. Just going through the motions. You meet Cassandra who grows up in this and learned not to show emotions. She still manages to see the good and try to help people. Then you have her stalker? His obsession with her is crazy. He thinks that he needs help to be more like her. This guy has been told that he is soulless. Then one day everything changes? I felt as though her stalker is clearly obsessed with her that during their time together they both changed. Is it enough for love to bloom from the darkness? It is definitely worth reading. I really enjoyed this book.

I had the opportunity of grabbing a copy of this book from bookfunnel. This book was more psychological thriller. The monster who I found out later on was indeed who I thought he was. Cassie has gone through so much in her young life loosing her parents to a house fire, residing in different foster care homes in which one home she endured so much. I'm not sure how I should feel about this story, however it seem as if both Cassandra & Billy/William will both be helping each other through what they both need. To endure what they both endured mentally was enough for them both to be different, but the same. Monster became obsessed with Cassie because she seemed to be the only one to show interest in the boy behind the closed door. She was the only one to write to him and tell him about her days while everyone else paid him any mind. She was a caring person and always tried to please others to stay out of trouble. So I guess the Monster only tried to figure out why she cared for others. Very interesting story and I enjoyed the storyline as well as the characters.

New to me author, this book is a suspenseful physiological thriller with so many twists and turns that it intrigues and hold the reader captive until the last page. Both Cassandra and Monster are damaged and lost souls with a deep and long connection to each other. Cassandra the good girl always helping and taking care of people is kidnapped and helped captive by the unfeeling, cold Monster. She communicates with him through a series of letters. The book alternates between the present and the past helping the reader to understand significant events in the past. This is a very dark read with lots of triggers so its not recommended for sensitive readers.

Tigger, not tiger because she's small and not fierce enough. Until her protective fur gets ruffled, and then her claws come out.
Cassandra was forgotten by the system, like so many children, and learned to cope with her situation. It breaks your heart because it happens more often than we know. This story was moving and cleverly written to show both points of view. Kudos to this author for writing a story that pulls you in and makes you question what happens next.

This was a story of ultimate revenge and I wish the author had really gone to town on the vengeance. If you read this story you will know what I mean. This is also a story of kindness in this cruel story. Cassandra gets kidnapped and she has to converse to her Monster by exchanging letters. This story was told in dual roles and flashbacks. I will say no more but if you like your stories dark and with a twist at the end you will enjoy this. This is a new author for me and I look forward to reading more of her books. She does have a very good imagination.

This is a psychological thriller that you do not want to miss. It’s written by a new to author and I was drawn to the book via the picture and the blurb. There are some dark themes in this book so those with triggers be warned. Personally, I thought it was brilliant and left me basically sitting on the edge of my seat and unable to put the book down until I had read the final word.

I went into reading Letters in the Dark more or less blind as I knew nothing about the author and this is her first book. I am so happy I took the opportunity to read it. It is definitely dark, intriguing, captivating and gripping. But it is also emotional, contemplative, and, ultimately, redemptive. I am still thinking about the characters, storyline, and, especially, the ending days after reading it. It is so different from anything I've previously read that I only wish I had read it a little slower just so I could have savored it just a bit more. If Kit Rose continues to write at this caliber (no pressure!), I will be her faithful reader for life. 5 Dark Stars!

Overall: 3.75 stars. This was a very well written, very creepy dark romance.

CW: Kidnapping, stalking, drugs, torture (not of one of the main characters), murder, Stockholm Syndrome, general non-con vibes. This book is not about pleasant things and is not really a happy story, so watch out.

It was, however, very well written. A short, fast read that held my attention for one sitting. There are a lot of unanswered questions and things you don’t know: as the reader, you’re just in the dark as our heroine. I loved the “epistolary” setup of our heroine exchanging letters with her captor (the....”hero,” I guess we’ll call him??) and them learning more about each other that way.

My only real complaints are that I didn’t like the flashback chapters because I just don’t like flashbacks (that’s a me problem), and I wish it had been just a litttttle bit longer: I feel like the heroine jumped from being scared of the hero to “understanding”/bargaining with him too quickly.

Still: an excellent dark romance, as disturbing as it ought to be.

This was a unique method of integrating the past and present into a storyline. I must admit I liked it, the letters from “captor to monster” were different from the norm and lead into the reader learning our FMCs story. We did get a little of the monsters’ story, not enough but he protected her and erased any one he thought was a threat to her, so added bonus right there 🤭 However, he did leave two abusers for her maybe another bonus?

It was a fairly quick read though didn’t seem rushed as some do, and it was just enough, if you know what I mean 😊💀

I liked it. It was a slow paced book, but I enjoyed reading it, and the ending did not disappoint me. Even though we are dark romance lovers, we still expect a perfect HEA ending, and this book had that. The twist was predictable for me, but I liked the twist as well. Guys, I have been in reading slump for the past 2 or 2.5 months, and I somehow finished this book, so I guess it was more than good for me. I'm still thinking about the book and its triggers.

** It's a dark romance book, so please read trigger warnings before you proceed with this book.

Book Summary:
What happens when your kindness gets you in trouble? What happens when you wake up and find yourself in a room that is not yours and looks like a cheap hotel room? What happens when you have been str!ped n@ked and you realize you have been held captive? What would your first reaction be? Well, whatever it would be, our FMC acted differently. What happens when you realize that your good acts and kindness landed you in this situation? What will be your reaction when your captor asks you to make him feel emotions? Yes, you read it right. Well, since it's a captor romance, do read trigger warnings below.

Trigger warnings:
>> Dark romance
>> Captive x captor
>> Kidn@pping / Dr*g use
>> Punishment/ Reward
>> Sweet captor?
>> St@lking/ Murd*r
>> Mention of child @buse (not by MMC)
>> Mention of Child r@pe (not by MMC)
>> Loss of parents
>> Traumatic childhood

Genre: Dark Romance
Book Length: Novella
POV: Alternating Dual; mostly from Cassandra though.
Setting: Unknown
Hero: Monster is a mystery. His identity is not revealed until the end.
Heroine: Cassandra is a social worker and Monster’s captive. She’s 31 and has brown hair. She’s a victim of a horrific foster system and family.
Heat Level: Low
Frequency of Sex: Low
Angst Level: Low
Standalone or Series: Standalone
Cliffhanger: No
Epilogue: No
Thoughts on Ending: Dark ending but ironically felt satisfying.
Would I Recommend? Maybe
My Review: This book was a dark and strange story. Monster captures Cassandra and holds her captive in his home to help him learn to love and have emotions. They write each other letters throughout her stay with him. This book has heart wrenching depictions of cruelty and pain experienced in childhood that no one should ever have to endure. This isn’t a romance, it’s a dark story of two very broken people connecting on a level that only they could understand.

What an amazing story!

After reading the first couple of chapters I was like what on earth am i reading right now...? And then turned the page and kept reading.

The way this book was written had me hooked straight away. I enjoyed the letters very much and more so as the story progressed.

The flash back and forwards was so captivating it was like a puzzle and piece by piece was slowly being put back together until, with only a couple of pieces left, did you get the idea of the end result.

Such a masterpiece of epic proportions. I loved it and especially the last few chapters.

Even as I knew i was reading the last couple of sentences of this story i didnt want it to end. Noooo.

I went straight onto Amazon to see what else Kit had written so I could sink myself into another story only to find none. Noooo. Oh well something to look forward to. No pressure Kit!

I received this free copy in exchange for an honest review.

A dark,cryptic and compelling journey

Quite the surprise! Definitely not your standard captive tale.
This is a well written, dark ,compelling ,unique and satisfying journey. It is one absolutely worth taking, especially if your literary tastes run darker and could include choosing to dip a toe into the depths of human depravity .It is particularly rewarding because in addition to being a psychological character study and a twisted tale of retribution it manages to successfully weave in believable romantic elements and leaves us not only relating to the characters but cheering them on. So glad to have found this talented author!

I was a little skeptical of how this book was done at first, with the time jumps and letters, but I was happily surprised. I couldn’t put it down. I loved learned about Cassie and her monster. I thought I knew who he was about half way through and was so excited to find out I had it right. This isn’t a super spicy book, but with how it is written you don’t need the spice. It doesn’t feel like it was lacking anything. I only wish there would have been a little more of the story at the end of the book. But I highly recommend this book if you like dark romance! I can’t wait to see what else Kit Rose writes!

Loved the book it was great, the story was well written and the characters are interesting. What an interesting story, Cassandra works for children Welfare services and organizes children to go into foster care if they are treated bad. Captor asks questions they corresponds via letters. Will they have a better understanding of each other and become friends or is Cassandra willing to give him the benefit of doubt.

I don't know what I thought this book would be about, but I never imagined it would head in the direction it did. When you read a lot you can usually imagine pretty quickly where a story is going, with the specifics the only unknown. This book had my totally turned around! I had no idea where it was going and I just had to keep reading to see what was next. I totally loved this and I have to say that the ending was truly the only ending possible and the perfect wrap up. I am so glad I chose to read this book. Beautifully done!

This was just an ok dark read for me. Even though I liked the story line and pacing I did find the story to be a bit on the slow side. I wish there was a bit more action and excitement. I also didn’t feel connected to the MC’s at all, and I didn’t feel any chemistry between them either. I did find their way of communicating different in a good way, and I love that shared a past which made ‘Monster’ feel attached to Cassandra. This author definitely has potential and I wouldn’t discourage anyone from reading it.

So this book is about a man who has stalked Cass for years and you don't really know why until the last few pages of the book. he ends up kidnapping her and putting her in a cage and you see this brief period of time while that happens. the book flips from 1/2/3rd POV sporatically and the chapters alternate character POV pretty frequently. This is a super quick read without a lot of gore, violence, or fast paced action. quick to digest and fairly easy to understand. It lacked a draw for me that I wasn't pulled to consume it super quick.
