This is really quite insightful and helpful in recognizing and understanding trauma responses in children (or just childish thinking in general). I just wish there was more specific prescriptive advice about how to deal with these situations. I'm still not entirely sure was therapeutic parenting is!

The Quick Guide of Therapeutic Parenting is a concise book that uses short metaphors to provide fresh perspectives on various parenting scenarios. Although primarily focused on caring for traumatized children, its principles are equally applicable to parenting typical kids. The book sheds light on the importance of empathy, often overlooked by parents with unrealistic expectations.

In today’s world, where biomedical advancements and internet forums make it easier for parents to share experiences and seek advice, children are often hastily labeled with conditions like ADHD or autism. The final section of the book delivers a profound message: parents must first learn to love and care for themselves before they can truly nurture others. I wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment.

However, this book serves more as an introductory guide rather than a comprehensive resource. For a deeper understanding of specific challenges or situations, readers might need to explore additional books. That said, this quick guide is a valuable starting point. Take some time to read it and gain insights into the art of therapeutic parenting.

My younger daughter gave me “The Quick guide to Therapeutic Parenting” for Christmas. She gave copies to other members of her extended family too. I assume it was intended to help us to understand better our grandson, whom she adopted fifteen months ago. It’s an unusual book, being a mixture of cartoons and parables all designed to throw light on why children who have experienced trauma in early life may behave in ways that are frustrating, exhausting or downright scary for the adults who interact with them. It's quite a light read and a bit repetitive, but a useful reminder to adults who may be tempted to expect an adopted child to become fully adjusted to their new life within a few months of ,oving in with their new family, that trauma lasts a lifetime and affectsevery person differently.

I read this book for work! A really easy but interesting read and a good introduction to the subject. I thought the analogies helped to explain the behaviours clearly.
