The ninth volume in the bestselling Invader ZIM comic series based on the hit Nickelodeon TV show. Future servants of ZIM! The newest collection of Invader ZIM comics includes tales of wonder, folly, and darkness. An exciting two-part story explores what happens when Dib and ZIM are forced to compete for the admiration of an alien race! While a very special one-shot reveals the secret origins of L'il Meat Man! Not enough meat for you? Join the Membranes as they ski Meat Mountain, the hottest-or, uh, coldest-resort just outside of town! And a one-shot from writer/artist Drew Rausch features a never-before-seen Dib's living skeleton! Collects issues #41-45.
Another very fun collection of adventures with Zim, Gir, Dib, and gang. I'll review the stories individually.
"Chapter 1 & 2" ***** Zim and Dib crash land on a planet where there is a prophecy that someone from the sky will come, take down the forcefield that traps them there, and take them into the stars. However, since Zim and Dib crashed on the same day, the Plim are divided on which one is THE ONE. Thus launches a vicious campaign battle for ruler of the planet. Review: This was Zim and Dib at their best. Plus Gir's brains were helping Zim win votes, which was hilarious. The ending had a fantastic twist, which was just icing on the cake.
"Chapter 3" **** Dib and Gaz get dragged to the new ski resort on Meat Mountain by their scientist father. Gaz is thrilled and is immediately shredding the slopes. Dib has issues on skis, but he has to figure out a way to up his skills quick when he finds that Zim has created the Meat Mountain for nefarious purposes. Review: Nice creating montages for Dib with epic timing issues. I love Gaz's take on the whole thing.
"Chapter 4" **** When the skool forces the class to choose inanimate objects to treat like their child for a week, Gir provides Zim with a baby made of meat. Zim dubs it 'Lil Meat Man, and gets a bit overly attached. Review: This was rather disturbing. Entertaining, but disturbing. The road trip was epic.
"Chapter 5" *** Dr. Membrane invents a device that takes all the bones out of things, and it accidentally works on Dib. So Dib has to figure out how to get flesh back. Meanwhile, Zim has extended the legs on his walking device and it goes haywire. Review: The plot on this was a little hard to follow, and the new illustration style really threw me. But Gir had some amazing lines (especially when he decides that being a lumberjack is the answer to Zim's issues), so all is forgiven.
Notes on content: No language issues or sexual content. Some disturbing meat creations.
Actual rating: 3.5 stars. In terms of quality, these stories stand out a bit more than the other volumes. They range from being pretty great to bleak and depressing (even more so than Invader Zim usually is), but they all work. The only miss is the last story with skeleton Dib. Maybe my dislike of it wouldn't have been so glaring if the art style hadn't be completely different. Pretty much every single story in every volume looks pretty close to the show's art style. So to have one that's so different just underscores the weakness of the story. Without this last story, this volume would have easily gotten a 4 star rating.
“zim.... has a duck on his head, the duck has a blue hat” . “I Squintz you lil meat man!” I love how completely insane the context plot and characters are and I have yet to find an invader Zim story that hasn’t amused me in some way. Loved it!
In lieu of more animated episodes, the Invader Zim graphic novels are pretty good and this one is no exception. The writers do a good job capturing the tone and voices of the animated episodes.
