Francesca Knight is a loner, has few friends, she’s even estranged from her sister Ellie and niece Rose. Since attending Chesterfield Boarding School in Derbyshire she’s had a ‘thing’ for Charles Fry. She follows him one night to a tube station, he’s chatting with another school acquaintance Dickie Graham when she witnesses something shocking. From this point in Fran’s life will never be the same again as she confronts tragedy and some horrific truths.

I really enjoyed this psychological thriller in the company of the enigmatic Fran. What is so interesting is trying to work out if she’s ‘Freaky Fran’ as her former school pupils believe, is she dark or is she a lonely voyeur, an outsider desperate for acceptance? The sisters school days at Chesterfields are conveyed well with all it’s confusing contradictions, teenage meanness and at times, brutality. I like the way the truth unravels a bit at a time and the mystery of her sister gets deeper and deeper. I really like the ending when the scales are completely removed from Fran’s eyes and she finally sees the truth and people for what they really are.

Overall, this is a well executed novel of obsessive love which blinds to the truth leading Fran to make many errors. I also really like the many literary references that match so well with Fran and her background. I look forward to reading mor e by Nicola Rayner in the future.

This is my second book by Nicola Rayner and while I didn't love her first book I am thrilled to say that I thought this one was pretty darn good and I am so happy to have given her a second chance.

This story is about Francesca Knight an awkward and somewhat prudish woman who is still obsessed with her boarding school crush, Charles. Charles, of course, is happily married with beautiful twin daughters but that doesn't stop Fran from following him at work, at play, and at home. It's easy for Fran to hide in the shadows because no one ever notices her anyways.

One night while she is following Charles at the tube station she notices that he is with Dickie, another classmate from their boarding school days, and he is someone that she does not have fond memories of. The tube station is crowded with people and Dickie falls to his death in front of the train. It appears to be an accident but Fran isn't so sure.

After attending his memorial service the people from her past begin to intrude on her quiet life and with it her memories of being Freaky Fran the girl they all took pleasure in picking on.

As the mystery of what happened to Dickie plays out we also learn about Frans boarding school days. Something terrible happened at the school that has caused her and her younger sister Ellie to become estranged and on reflection of these memories Fran is beginning to question everything she thought she knew which shines a light on a whole new mystery, where is Ellie?

I found Fran to be a fascinating character to read about. For as odd as she was I was still able to like her and from what I gather from other reviewers is that I may be alone in that opinion. I thought Raynor did a marvelous job of intertwining the two mysteries and I found both mysteries to be equally compelling. The pacing was perfect, not too fast but not too slow, and the conclusion was satisfying and somewhat shocking. Sometimes the people we think we know best we hardly know at all. 4 stars!

Thank you NetGalley and Avon Books for my ARC. Wow! This book had me engaged from the start. There are shocks from beginning to end. Fran is a strange and awkward loner. Her unhealthy obsession of Charles, a friend from school, dominates every aspect of her life. Lurking in the shadows, waiting for a glimpse of her self proclaimed soulmate leads her to witness a tragedy that will force her to come face to face with her greatest fear. Suspense, dread and a total sense of unease, drives this tale of deception and denial. Definitely recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is a very creepy and effective thriller about an unreliable narrator, Fran, who is a bit odd....and also VERY obsessed with Charles. Charles is now with Fiona, but Fran still can't get him out of her mind. She is obsessed. In the beginning of the book a mysterious death happens on a subway platform that Fran witnesses. But also, Fran is not quite in her right mind.

The beginning of the book was a little slow but once it got going it got very good. I liked the fact that the first-person narrator was unusual, obsessive, and odd - I get tired of reading books about perfect and beautiful narrators who are just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Fran has Issues with a capital I, and you never know if you can totally trust her narration, but she remains totally interesting and you are invested in her story throughout.

I was genuinely shocked by the ending twist, which was really well-executed and rewarding. All in all, a very fun, twisty thriller with some innovative ideas and characters. 4 stars.

Kinda Brideshead Revisited with a stalker in it
I read quite a few reviews of this whilst thinking what to put and a few said ‘not really for me but for some reason I had to finish it’ and I would concur with that, sums my thoughts up well
Fran has idolised Peter since their private schooling days, now as adults living in London Fran follows him everywhere and one night she witnesses a mutual friend ( Dickie ) accidentally falling in front of a tube train, Peter is devastated as is Dickie’s wife ( Fran uses the situation to get close to her thereby getting closer to Peter ) add in the mix a ‘not seen for 3 years’ Sister of Frans and her daughter and as questions start to be asked about the accident truths unfurl from the past
I loved that Fran worked in a bookshop and the descriptions of her day to day life there, customers, colleauges etc but I really didn’t enjoy the random ‘classics’ quotations that appeared throughout the book , especially in character’s conversation’s, something that works once then loses its poignancy if used again and again
Fran was a well written character and I loved how she spoke to herself and the thoughts she was having whilst having seemingly normal conversations with other characters
There were some quite sad descriptions of loneliness as well
Mmmm maybe I enjoyed it more than I thought but one thing was for certain I did want to finish it and the ending was good if not abrupt

You and Me is a gripping psychological thriller by Nicola Rayner (author of 2019's popular The Girl Before You), exploring themes of obsession, guilt, family relationships and the far-reaching effects of past trauma.

Francesca Knight, approaching 40, lives alone and works in a bookshop, spending her free time obsessing over and surreptitiously stalking the man she'd had a crush on at school and has never forgotten. Since her mother's death, she has become estranged from her younger, more beautiful and outgoing sister Ellie, and lives a lonely life in the family flat on an estate.

One night, while trailing Charles in central London, she witnesses the shocking death of Charles's old friend Dickie Graham, who bullied Fran mercilessly at school and was guilty of some as-yet unnamed crime against Ellie. From a crowded underground platform, Dickie falls in front of an approaching train - or could he have been pushed? Fran is sure that Dickie recognised someone in the crowd in the seconds before his death, but she can't admit to anyone that she was there, as her pursuit of Charles would be revealed.

For Fran, Dickie's death has a silver lining - it legitimises her getting back in touch with Charles, who is now married with twin children. She also develops a friendship with Dickie's widow, Caroline, who recalls her husband as a troubled man, far more sensitive than Fran would ever have given him credit for. Who could have wanted Dickie dead? Fran and Caroline set out to uncover the truth, while Fran becomes increasingly frustrated in her efforts to heal her relationship with Ellie, who is only contactable sporadically via social media.

You and Me employs the trope, perhaps over-used of late, of a psychologically fragile middle-aged single woman as an unreliable narrator. Fran is a pretty delusional and pitiable figure, clinging onto misinterpreted tidbits of body language as signs of Charles's hidden love for her. She's never managed to shrug off the emotional dependence of her dysfunctional and unhappy time at the exclusive Chesterfield school, where she perceived Charles as her saviour from constant ignominy. As the author notes in her acknowledgments,
"...I've thought a lot about the delusions and disappointments of obsessive romantic love - how we can get it so wrong and how much more the infatuation tends to say about the subject than the object of affection."
The plot is a slow burn, as the events of the past, or at least Fran's perception of them, are gradually revealed, Fran encounters her past classmates and the fog around current events clears. The dramatic ending is fitting but shocking.

This is a well-written and compulsively readable thriller, which I would recommend highly to other readers.

My thanks to the author, the publisher Avon Books UK and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this title prior to publication.

Despite the interesting premise, I did not find this story too original. It felt slow and dull: too obvious on the theme of stalking and not enough surprises to engross me.

Fran is a social outcast who seems to have lived on the outside all her life. When readers are introduced to her, she is presented as obsessing over her school-girl crush. Fran follows Charles from a distance and reminisces about her school days. The circle of old school friends remain and they way that they treat Fran illustrate they are critically aware of her behaviour. Throw into the plot Fran’s absent sister, Ellie, and readers see that there is a mystery to solve. Not only do we need to find out what happened to Dickie on the night of his death, but why and where Ellie has disappeared to.

The writer explores the idea of obsession. Over the course of the novel, readers learn that it isn’t just Fran and her obsession with Charles: each major character has a secret fixation that drives them forwards. I enjoyed this element of the plot and how it linked so cleverly to the title. You and Me isn’t just about Fran and Charles, but Fran and Ellie, Charles and Dickie… the couplings could go on.

Throughout the story, the omnipresent feeling of isolation and claustrophobia adds to the overall atmosphere of the book. This intensifies Fran’s unhealthy feelings and also the separation she experiences from her old school friends. Social groups, expectations and bullying form the background to this story and I think it is a set of topics that many readers will relate to.

As I mentioned, I found the story quite slow and tricky to get engrossed with. It did not grab me from the beginning as I was expecting and I found that henceforth, I was constantly seeking that magical, mind-blowing event in the plot. Whilst it did come towards the end of the story, as facts are beginning to emerge, for me, it was just a little too late. Consequently, in terms of thrillers and mysteries, I sadly feel that there are stronger books out there.

This entertained but did not grip me. I was curious but not connected to the narrative. It’s a shame, but I think making the story progress a bit quicker would have created a more captivating narrative.

With thanks to Avon books and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Fran is obessed with Charles. She's had a crush on him since they were at school. When she was following Charles home one night, she witnessed an accident, the death of a former schoolboy from their era. Fran is also estranged from her sister and niece.

The story starts off slowly but it soon picks up. There were some unexpected twists. Fran is qjite a creepy character who is not very likeable. She had been a bit of a loner at school. The mystery between Fran and her sister goes deeper throughout the book. There is some thrilling and suspenseful moments in the book and 5he ending I never saw coming.

Try as I may, I couldn't get into this book. The plot felt very repetitive & there was nothing new happening until the very end. When downloading this book I thought this was about a stalker & was keen to see what new devious way of stalking would be unleashed. I went in expecting cunning, creepy stuff & all I got was a girl too obsessed with the past. Francesca's sister was the victim of a horrible incident while at school & this fact is re-iterated so often I just didn't see the point of it. It took a very very long time to get interested in the story & when I found out that the story is going somewhere I was 80% in. Although I finished the book I felt that was way too late. The plot was good but the construction of it was slow for me. The characters were good & I surprisingly (kind of) liked Francesca but she was going at a pace way too slow for me.

Thank you, NetGalley, Avon Books UK & Nicola Rayner for an arc!

Woah! This was kind of creepy in a weird way.

Initially when I started reading this book, I found it slow and couldn't really understand which direction it was going in. But almost halfway into the book, the story kind of picked up and the ending was an unexpected twist!

Even though eventually I ended up liking this book, I couldn't relate to the main character, Fran and I struggled to understand her. I found her obsession with Charles extreme. He is married with children but she's just biding her time until he realises that they are meant to be together, then she'll be ready with open arms. So she keeps on observing and stalking him.

Overall, a good book but I just wish that the pace of the plot was consistent throughout.

I felt this book took a long time to go anywhere.
I was ok with that. I was enjoying the writing style... easy to read.
Then it took on a break neck speed towards the end, throwing things left right and centre that I almost found myself nodding along to ,agreeing that of course, that's what happened.
Fun times.

Fran, who’s in her late 30s, works in a bookshop and is a loner with no close friends. Since her school days, she’s been obsessed with Charles Fry. She’s certain that they have a connection and that one day he will realise this. She doesn’t only follow him on social media but also stalks him by following him around, sitting on a bench on the estate where he lives, hanging out near him. For now, he’s very married to Fiona with whom he has baby twins. He’s only friendly and cordial towards her, just like he was at school when he saved her a few times from awkward situations.
She also has a younger sister who’s the mother of Rose, a niece she never met, something she feels very bad about. Ellie ran away from her after a vicious argument and lives abroad now but most of the time Fran doesn’t know exactly where. They only talk on Facebook and through e-mail. She misses her terribly and often thinks to spot her somewhere in London.
One night when she’s following Charles to the platform of the tube, she witnesses how Dickie (another schoolmate) falls under the train. She thinks that he recognised someone and may have been pushed but doesn’t tell anyone that she was there as well.

There’s something universal about unrequited love and as a young teen, who hasn’t pined after some unattainable boy we were secretly in love with? I do remember riding my bicycle numerous times a day through the street where this boy lived. (I can’t believe it, but I’m not sure anymore what his name was). But for most of us, we grow out of these infatuations. Here, our main character hasn’t and is delusional about the meaning of Charles’ friendliness.
This was a difficult book for me. It started out very slow and I didn’t think this book was for me. All these people who’re stuck in their schooldays friendships and never move on, just gossiping and keeping secrets from one another as if their still 16. The characters are really annoying; Caroline the widow was the most likeable of the lot. With Fran, I felt sorry for her but also wanted to give her a good shake-up and shout “Grow up, get a life and get real!” This part was tedious and I only kept reading to find out if she saw something or not. With all her fantasies about Charles, she’s not exactly a trustworthy narrator. So you’re left guessing. But it is really drawn out and I wouldn’t give it more than 2 stars.
But then a bit over halfway, the story changed and became interesting. At this point, I got pulled into the narrative and the suspense. I won’t tell you what happens, but it’s something I never would have guessed. A very well found intrigue, I must say. So if you can read through the first half without giving up, you get a second half that’s a really good and suspenseful psychological thriller with several twists and turns that deserves at least 4 stars.
I don’t know how 2 parts of the same book can be so widely different but it’s very difficult to rate. I settled for 3 stars as the average.
I thank Netgalley and Avon for the free ARC they provided me with; this is my honest unbiased review of it.

This was a decent read, and a new take on the "obsessive girlfriend" genre. It centers on Fran, a lonely woman in her mid-30s who has harbored an obsession with a boy, Charles, from high school for years now. When she witnesses Charles and his friend Dickie on a subway platform and sees Dickie fall onto the tracks, she doesn't want to admit she was there but her curiosity allows her to get pulled into the web of people related to Dickie, including his wife, and Charles' family. There is also another plotline woven in related to Fran's estranged sister, Ellie, as well as her relationships with all of these key players.

Fran herself is not a likable character. It's pretty sad that she has spent her whole life chasing after this guy and hasn't really done much else. She also let her relationship with Ellie fall apart and she reeks of desperation whenever anyone shows the slightest bit of interest in her. That detracted from my enjoyment of the book for the most part but Fran shows some unexpected strength at the end of the book which changed my opinion of her.

The book is a bit of a slow burn for most of it, and I find myself annoyed by Fran's constant obsession over things that happened so long ago. However, things start falling into place in the 2nd half of the book, leading to some unexpected twists and an ultimate surprise showdown at the end.

Overall, I think I'd recommend the book because of the ending- the rest of it was just OK but the end was unique and exciting- if you love the book anyway, you will love the end, and if you don't, love the book anyway, you should stick with it and you may change your mind.

Thanks to Netgalley for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This story had me engrossed from start to finish. It starts with a shock, the tension ratcheting up as you are left wondering what is really going on. Such clever story-telling, giving the reader snippets of information, like a trail of breadcrumbs. The main character, Fran, has to be up there with Eleanor Oliphant as one of my favourites this year. And I loved the way we gradually got to know her and her back story. Mix a whole bunch a fabulous characters with a jaw-dropping plot and this is what unputdownable is all about! Definitely in my top reads of the year.

I honestly loved this book, such fabulous writing. It was an absolute treat!

There’s always that one boy at school that is seemingly perfect. That boy is now Charles and he has been Fran’s obsession ever since. Fran, aka Freaky Fran at school, is now in her 30’s works in a bookshop and is at best a strange lonely woman and at worst a bit of a deranged stalker.

The only family Fran has is her younger sister Ellie and a niece she has never met as Ellie fled after an argument. She only gets news of them and their whereabouts via social media and email.

After following Charles at the tube station she witnesses him with Dickie another old school, well I would say friend but seeing as his face was scratched out on the school photo that really isn’t the right word. Dickie seems to have spotted something then before you know it he’s fallen from the platform and under an oncoming train. Or was he pushed?

I loved the characters in this book and I found myself comparing them to people I went to school with. A school will always have a Fran, a Charles and a Dickie. I loved that Fran worked in a bookshop and a few lines about customers made me chuckle, I have to apologise as I’m one of those who may well have said well the cover was green. There was also the inclusion of some classic literary references.

Told in first person by such an unreliable narrator really made me question what I was being told and whether Fran was just sad and lonely or whether they had got it right at school and she was Freaky Fran. The first half of this book is slower paced allowing you to get to know the characters and their backgrounds. The second half the pace speeds up and there are twists and turns as the truth comes to light. I saw it like a jigsaw puzzle where the pieces will gradually fit together to reveal the big picture.

Zostawiam 3 gwiazdki.

You and Me – A great story

Fran is a lonely spinster, stuck in what was the family home in London block of flats, her mother is dead, and her sister left a couple of years ago. She works in a bookshop, which gives her a reason to leave the house, and sometimes like to sit by a pond near the home of an old school friend.

Fran is clearly obsessed by her days at boarding school, even though she was known as freaky Fran there. She is also obsessed by her sister and the niece, whom she has never met. She relives those times at school and the reasons behind her loneliness and the split with her sister.

Her lonely life comes to a shuddering halt when she sees two people of school, one of whom happens to die that night. Fran is sure that he was killed, or did he jump in front of the Underground Train? In the aftermath of the death, Fran’s social life seems to take off and she feels out of her depth but happy to be making some reconnections. She cannot understand why her sister is not in contact too often.

All becomes clear as the book continues and when the truth is revealed, will she finally be able to contact her sister? Will she still have her new friends?

At first, You and Me, starts slowly and gathers pace slowly, but when it does you get an exciting and interesting read. The author has an excellent writing style, which is engaging and makes the reader want to read more. A great plot and story, well written.

Holy crazy people! From the start it’s apparent our main character leans on the stalker side of personalities. Oy vey. Hide yo husbands, y’all!! Not really. Just one husband.

Fran has been obsessed with Charles since school age. One night when she’s following him, she witnesses another one of their classmates (who was pretty evil), fall to his death in front of a train after a night out drinking with Charles.

That leads to Fran questioning Dickie’s death and if it really was an accident. She questions former classmates, Dickie’s wife, and even her own sister, whom she hasn’t seen since she left town after having her baby a few years prior.

This book kept my interest overall, but there were a few places I found myself getting a little bored. Some of the twists were predictable, but there was one detail that I missed, so that one got me!

Overall, it was a good start to October for me.

Francesca is a weird and creepy character. Omg I don't like her. I mean if I like someone I did stalk them on social media. That is all nothing more. I mean it's normal right to stalk people on social media hahaha most of the people did that anyway so chill. But Fran goshh she is worse than me. Not only she stalk him on social media but she stalk Charles in real life too. Fran is obsessed with Charles since high school and now she is 30 something. Goshh this is freaking creepy! Ohh yeah she is obsessed with her sister and niece too.

Wow the ending! I didn't see that coming at all! I don't trust Fran because of the way she act so I kinda suspect her. Or her sister, Ellie.

Btw I finished this book in a few hours because I wanted to know what happened eventho I don't like the main character hahaaa

Fran followed her obsession, Charles, everywhere, and one day, she saw him at the station with Dickie, who fell to his death. But was it an accident?
At the funeral, she saw some people from her past. Memories from the past slammed into her and caused her to rethink the things she thought she knew.
My first book by this author, I was quite taken in by Fran. She was different from the other main characters recently read. I liked how the author intertwined the mystery and also factored in Fran's relationship with her sister. The chapters slowly revealed the truth and made this an interesting read. I got the opportunity to listen to the audio version of this book and quite enjoyed it. 3.5 stars

It was a decent page turner .. psychothriller with dark undertones . A story of two sisters, women jilted , women betrayed .. and masked evil .
Things were a bit exotic towards the end, nevertheless believable if the imagination is stressed a wee bit more.

This book has made me really want to read more by Nicola Rayner – it’s a suspensful, addictive read about a socially awkward woman, called Fran, who witnesses an accident. Dickie, a man she used to go to school with (and didn’t get along with), falls in front of an underground train and is killed. Fran was only there at the time to watch (stalk) his best friend Charles, who she has been in love since she was a teenager. She starts to wonder if it was, in fact, truly an accident…

You and Me feels like a pyschological thriller with plenty of mystery and twists, but has a protagonist who – although quite odd and makes some dubious decisions – I found to be likeable and interesting. She’s certainly unreliable at times, and there’s moments when what she admits to the reader sets alarm bells off – she is very intense and the way she behaves around Charles is very strange. However, I really felt for her, and I feel like the back story of the character was very well developed – the author did a great job of making me really care about Fran and what had happened to her sister. She’s the perfect mix – she could be hiding more than she lets on, but I was also really rooting for her!

The plot moves along at a great pace without feeling rushed, and though there are some points where you may have to suspend your disbelief a little, I found myself completely engrossed in the story.

You and Me is a real page turner, and I really enjoyed this exciting, entertaining read!

Many thanks to the publisher, Avon Books, for providing a copy of this novel on which I chose to write an honest and unbiased review.

This was my first novel by the author and found it interesting as the description and cover caught my attention.

It started at a moderate pace and I was confused as of what I was reading but powering through; it picks up and some puzzle pieces are finding their place in the big picture.

I was interested to see what truly transpired, what precisely Fran sees in the tube scene, if it was unquestionably that or, as we know, sometimes in shock cases, our mind is playing up and will show only what we want to see, like a safety blanket.

I couldn’t get close to any character, more so I just didn’t admire Fran, not even felt sorry for her, it was just something that I couldn’t get out of her, always lonely and strange behaviour, always so... strange plus the stalking obsession is not for me at all.

As a thriller, the story is compelling and an excellent one with many twists and turns that many people will appreciate, but wistfully I wasn’t sold on it.

The plot of You and Me is about unwanted love, loneness and Murder. One night Francesca Knight had always had a crushed on Charles, a childhood friend. Francesca fascination with Charles did not stop even after he got married and had children. However, one night while stalking Charles she saw her friend Dickie dies. This incident for Francesca made her start to think about her sister Ellie. The readers of You and Me will continue to follow Francesca to find out what happens.

You and Me are the first book I have read of Nicola Rayner, and I enjoyed reading this book. At first, I wondered why I was reading this book. However, when I was halfway through the book when I started to engage with the plot of this book. I was surprised by the conclusion of You and Me. I love Nicola Rayner's portrayal of You and Me's characters and how they intertwine with each throughout this book. You and Me is well written and researched by You and Me. I like Nicola Rayner's description of You and Me's settings that complement this book's plot.

The readers of You and Me will understand what people do who are desperate to have a child. Also, the readers of You and Me will learn about the consequences of loneliness on a person.

I recommend this book.

I really hate when books are branded to be like some other great piece of fiction (or Netflix drama) and then they fall short. Very short. This is not like You. All these authors are out here trying to write Joe Goldberg characters and this ain't it! There is only one Joe!

That's not to say that the character of Fran in this book isn't a psycho, she is, but it's in a very weird, uncomfortable way. She's an odd duck. I tried to like her, but I just didn't.

This book is so slow, it took forever to get anywhere and then like too many books lately, the details come flying in and there's not enough time spent on clues and figuring things out. Suddenly we are at the end. Nothing particularly memorable about this one. Didn't hate it (except for the marketing lies - it's not near as exciting as Kepnes books!), but I didn't love it either.

This was a bit of a slow burner but it picked up towards the end.
Fran is a bit of a loner - she has few friends and is estranged from her sister.
When she was at school Fran developed a thing for Charles and has stayed in touch with him.
After following him to the tube station, she sees another person from school fall in front of the train. But was he pushed?
Fran desperately wants to talk to Charles about it but then she’d have to admit to following him so she tries to find out more information from the widow.
Fran then stumbled upon some other secrets and the book has a great ending.
This is a good read where the truth unravels slowly over time.
Thanks to Avon Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
