Tender and Powerful and Loving

Like No Other Boy by Larry Center is a wonderful narrative that truly is an emotional roller coaster ride and a compelling story that lovingly captures the relationship between a devoted father and his autistic son.

Although a fictional encounter, it would seem that the author is well acquainted with the world of autistic parenting and the challenges, commitment, and sacrificial love that is fully engaged with the caring of an autistic child. The other added dimension is the gut-wrenching characteristics and traits that are related in describing how an autistic child responds, the various coping mechanisms and behavioral issues that a child with this disorder experiences.

The story unfolds as the father and son are experiencing an outing at the local zoo. The father attempts to engage his son in observing the animals and provide a meaningful experience for his son Thomas. However, the usual coping behaviorisms are experienced and demonstrated by both Thomas and his father and it seems that the special outing to the zoo by both father and son is going down the same routine path of actions and reactions created by autism.

However, a surprise visit to the primate exhibit demonstrates to the father and bystanders that a special relationship and encouraging behavior is demonstrated between Thomas and one specific primate in the exhibit. Additionally, how incredible is it that Thomas was able to express to his father that one of the chimpanzees was pregnant.

Add in the dimensions of the divorce experience between the child's parents, the father falling on hard times financially, and the intricacies of coping with this disorder, both at the parenting and child levels, you have this strong forceful read.

Like No Other Boy by Larry Center is compelling, emotionally draining but thoroughly satisfying read about a father who is inspirationally engaged with loving and caring for his autistic and beautiful son. The author weaves together an incredible story that demonstrates the challenges of a family and child facing autism together and the strength and power of parents who endeavor to meet this challenge and empower their child through the incredible strength of self-sacrificing love.

I am just so obsessed with this book. I could not put it down. Normally I struggle to read ebooks, but I had absolutely zero issues with this and it was so engaging. There was the perfect amount of tension between Chris and Cheryl and the trial was so intense and captivating! I actually ordered a physical copy of this since my mother’s birthday is soon, but it won’t be here in time so I was thinking I will probably save it for mother’s day, but I think she will love it since she is a paraprofessional and works with autistic children. I also loved all of the sign language and the accurate portrayal of an autistic child. Also the fact that Chris’s goal was not to “cure” his child, but to help navigate life easier because autism is not something that can be “cured” but rather a way of life and different way of seeing and interacting with the world. Just such a beautiful book. Highly recommend.

Spoilers: Books about children with physical, psychological, and neurological disorders are nothing new. Books about the bond that children develop with animals are nothing new. Books about the relationship between single parents and their children are also nothing new.
In substandard hands Larry Center's Like No Other Boy would be a glurgy piece of tripe filled with cliches that would make even the most ardent Hallmark Channel fan roll their eyes. Thankfully, Center is not that author. Instead he wrote a sweet, moving, and at times heartbreaking novel about the love between a single father and his Autistic son.

Chris Cutcher's son, Tommy is Autistic. He has limited communication with anyone and while verbal often has verbal tics and becomes agitated. On one of his weekends in which Chris has custody (Chris and his ex wife, Cheryl have joint custody.), he takes Tommy to the zoo. Tommy does not react much until they pass by the chimpanzee enclosuree. Fascinated, Tommy begins to communicate with the primates and even reveals one is pregnant. A sign outside the enclosure confirms it.
Chris is stunned and when they return, records a second encounter between Tommy and the chimps. He is impressed that Tommy has opened himself up so he looks for a program that studies chimpanzees so Tommy can talk to them. Chris takes Tommy to the Weller Research Institute which studies primates. The researchers are able to study how Tommy communicates with the chimps while the boy makes new animal friends. We learn that through a combination of mental pictures, sign language, and laser focus in one thing allow Tommy and the chimpanzees the ability to understand and relate to each other.
Chris's ex, Cheryl is less than enthused and wants Tommy to go to a school in Houston so he can be with her and her new fiance. Besides the stress of a divorce, raising a special needs child, and a not so lucrative career in voice over work, Chris also has to take care of his aging father so he cannot move to Houston. He wants Tommy to stay with him in San Diego, so a custody battle looks to be on the horizon.

There are some very touching moments between father and son that reflect the difficulties of raising a special needs child and the love that a good parent has for that child. In some passages, Tommy loses his temper only to be calmed by the promise of a token or a visit to the chimps. Sometimes Tommy withdraws so much into himself that Chris can't follow or understand him though he tries. We also see the realistic frustrations and exhaustion someone has in raising such a child. These moments make the sweet parts like when Chris makes his son laugh by imitating Tommy's favorite cartoon characters or when Chris watches with pride and delight as the chimpanzees help him open up even more beautiful.
I am not qualified to judge the accuracy of how Tommy's Autism is written (and people on the spectrum react differently to stimuli so what applies for one may not apply for another). However, the emotional crux of the story between the father and son is something that is earnest and sincere.

There are other characters that are equally as well written, both human and animal. Chris gets assistance from an animal researcher, Rachel who is amazed and encouraging towards Tommy's conversations with the chimpanzees. Chris's father is crotchety, stubborn and doesn't like being reminded of his diminished faculties but is fiercely protective of his son and grandson.
Cheryl, Tommy's mother, could be written as a villain and there are moments when she is pretty antagonistic like her insistence that Houston is the best option for him and her refusal to see that Tommy's time with the chimps is working even when she sees the results for herself. Cheryl also loves Tommy and advocates for him. She is just one of those types of people who think only she knows best and no one else.
Even the chimps are brilliantly characterized. There is Mikey, a little mischief maker who loves to run around the enclosure. Obo was a shy primate brought out of his shell by Tommy's arrival. Albert has heart problems from a lifetime of abuse and sometimes withdraws to paint but he is able to communicate through Tommy a longing for freedom. Of course Tommy's interactions with his primate friends are deeply felt as many animal lovers can testify sharing a bond with their furry companions that goes beyond speech. It goes through thought, emotion, and understanding. This book shows that.

Like No Other Boy may be a book that tells a familiar story but it does it in a way that is touching, honest, sincere, heartwarming, and heartbreaking.

Truly moving look into autism and a father's love.

“Often, it’s not about becoming a new person, but becoming the person you were meant to be, and already are, but don’t know how to be.” –Heath L. Buckmaster

Chris Crutches is the proud father of a gorgeous eight-year-old boy called Tommy for whom he shares custody with ex-wife Cheryl. Like most parents, Chris wants the best for his son but Chris has several extra obstacles to unlocking the best for his precious boy. One of which being that Tommy is living with autism. Longing to see enthusiasm in his son, get direct eye contact or even hear him speak a few sentences drive him to take Tommy to the zoo, where Tommy connects with chimps, enchanting everyone near the enclosure.

This rare event leads to a rare opportunity for father and son that could solve many of Chris' problems and maybe grant him access to the seemingly faraway world in which Tommy seems to reside. But when Cheryl drops a bombshell on Chris, a new battle begins. And Chris is determined to win.

This book! It had me in tears literally. I was pulled in by this father's account of loving a child with autism. It was so honest and candid and detailed that I felt moved and much more knowledgeable at the end. As a parent myself I related to some of what the narrator was saying and sympathised with others. I really got a sense of how much emotional energy it takes to have such an incredible little person to love and I really connected with the desire of both father and to some extent the mother to do what they thought best for their boy.

What moved me the most in the narration was that despite everything, Chris was internally always fair to his wife. Even when she was spiteful and downright cruel. Even when he was disregarded and treated badly. Even though he had many problems as a result of his divorce. So though I wanted to utterly digest the wife, I couldn't quite do it. I will however say that I HATED Beaman to my very core!

On the other hand, I absolutely adored the chimps and learning more about them. Even though there is a heartbreaking subplot there too. I'm not even an animal lover as such. Honestly, just go read the book.

This amazingly raw, beautiful tale comes highly recommended, whether you know someone living with autism or not, and whether you are a parent or not. After I finished sobbing, I was left with an imprint of hope and happiness. Gorgeous story.

The touching story of an autistic boy and his chimpanzee friends. Z

Chris Crutcher's life, since his divorce, has taken a sharp downward spiral. His only consolation and joy is his eight-year old son, Tommy. But Tommy is autistic and his mother is determined to take full custody of him and move him away where Chris will not be able to see him often, nor take him to visit the chimpanzees with which he has an unusually strong relationship. An accident which nearly costs Tommy his life, changes matters for everyone involved and the true colors of the individuals around Tommy are revealed. Written with a great deal of empathy, this book provides a unique perspective of life and some deep insights into our true purpose on earth. Apart from being truly inspiring for parents with children suffering from any disabilities, this is also a book which will inspire any readers facing hardships or difficult conditions in their life. It offers some inspiring insights and is highly entertaining to read, however, it also delivers an emotional rollercoaster which is deeply moving and unforgettable.

Tommy truly is like no other boy. His fantastical ability to understand chimpanzees not only helps bridge the gap of communication between humans and chimps, but it also gives him the chance to bridge the gap between him and his father Chris Crutcher. The bond between father and son can be felt on every page and in every action taken by Chris.
However, the story is as heart-wrenching as it is heartwarming, with fights over what is best for Tommy breaking out between Chris and his ex-wife, Cheryl. Chris struggles with his own emotions of being replaced and pushed away, all the while desperately trying to keep that paternal bond with the son he loves more than anything. With a supporting cast of interesting characters, ranging from scientists to an aging father to several chimpanzees, Like No Other Boy makes for a fascinating dive into the world of caring for an incredibly special child.

Parental Determination

Wow! What an emotional Rollercoaster! This story about a dad and his autistic son brought tears to my eyes. It is incredible the connection that Tommy ends up having with the chimps in Center's story. As a mother, I can completely relate with Chris's determination to do everything possible for one's child. Add to the mix the fact that he is divorced and at odds with Cheryl, Tommy's mother, and you have conflict of a different sort. It is difficult to maintain any sort balance when one is divorced and with children, but Tommy was a special case. I'm happy with how the book turned out. I loved the way Center portrayed emotions through his words, showing us a life through the father's lens,  which as a varied read I can appreciate. It's a wonderful story full of heart, love, and togetherness. I would recommend this book to anyone!

“We have to stand up for what we believe in. We have to go the distance to fight the odds if we want to make a change. In the end, it’s worth it, though while you’re doing the fighting, it certainly sometimes seems like it’s just easier to give up.”

Like No Other Boy by Larry Center was an emotionally compelling and inspirational book for me as a parent and Special Needs Educator. The story is written through the eyes of Chris Crutcher and tells of his experiences as the father to a child with Autism. His son, however, was Like No Other Boy; Tommy was unique.

After Chris and his wife Cheryl divorced, Chris was given weekend visitation. Chris' entire existence revolved around Tommy. He loved coming up with fresh, original ideas for engaging and bonding with his son. Tommy's connection with the chimpanzees during a trip to the zoo was nothing less than extraordinary. He seemed to connect with the chimpanzees, and a video of his interactions with them gained widespread attention. Upon seeing his son attentive and focused, Chris was prompted to find the Weller Institute. The researchers at the Weller Institute were amazed by Tommy's unwitting communication with the chimpanzees during his first visit to the institute.

The storyline advances quickly and sends readers on an emotional whirlwind. There are some tear-jerking moments where one will need to halt and contemplate, so readers need to have Kleenex on standby. The author didn't hold anything back in this riveting novel, and readers will be completely drawn into the events. The difficulties parents encounter when caring for a child with autism have been realistically illuminated by author Larry Center. The components that made this novel a five-star read were Chris's relatable patience, the disappointments he experienced throughout his life, and his feelings about his frustration. Although the main struggle is comprehensibly resolved with a few surprising turns, the lack of predictability is a feature that is certain to make this novel a classic.

Like No Other Boy will leave readers with a lot to think about and may even result in some having a greater appreciation for those in their care.

Like No Other Boy by Larry Center is an emotional, heart wrenching, insightful, and heart warming book. Tommy is an eight year old boy with autism. His parents would do anything for their child to help him. The problem is that they have different opinions on how to do this. Tom-Tom's parents, are divorced and he lives with his mother during the week and with his dad on the weekends. To say that Chris and Cheryl's relationship is strained is putting it mildly. One Saturday, his father takes him to the San Diego Zoo and when they are viewing the chimpanzees, Chris notices that his son is somehow communicating with the chimps. At first he can't believe this but others that are around are noticing the same thing. When he tells Cheryl she thinks he is insane.
Chris finds a program that is studying chimpanzees and their communication with humans. He brings Tommy to this place and the doctors there are astounded at Tommys interaction with the primates.
The relationship of divorced parents, between father and son, Tommy and the chimps is so real and moving. The situations of dealing with court proceedings on the custody of Tommy, dealing with an aging parent, dealing with the real heartbreak of having a child with autism and their idiosyncrasys, trying to find employment, and most of all doing what your gut is telling you is the best situation for your son is told with such heartfelt emotion.

Like No Other Boy by Larry Center is a gripping read. I had hoped that this book would be nonfiction, but it's not: it's a novel. Nevertheless, it reflects many realistic aspects of life: raising a child with a disability, trying to do what's best, struggling to maintain a civil relationship with one's ex-spouse, being a member of the sandwich generation.

Chris is a struggling voice-over actor who shares custody of his son Tommy with his ex-wife Cheryl. Tommy is on the autism spectrum and is minimally verbal, eschewing most physical contact. After a trip that Chris and Tommy go on to the zoo, it becomes clear that Tommy has a gift for communicating with animals, specifically chimpanzees. Chris and Cheryl fight over the right therapy for Tommy, with Cheryl wanting to go so far as to move to Houston to enroll Tommy in a new school -- but away from Chris.

Center's writing is compelling and clean (except for not knowing the difference between "lying" and "laying"). The last couple of chapters are tear-jerkers. We are all just dashes between two sets of numbers on a tombstone.

I highly recommend this book.

Being a parent is such an incredible experience which has inspired thousands of authors throughout time. Being a parent to a child with special needs however is a genre that often isn’t explored or expressed much in literature. This is where Larry Center’s Like No Other Boy comes in as a touching and beautiful tribute to parenting an autistic child, and celebrates just how truly remarkable and incredible they are.
The novel follows the story of a father Chris and his little boy named Thomas who is autistic with a very limited vocabulary. The story follows their relationship and the incredible transformative effect that chimpanzees have on Thomas, and how they truly change both his father’s and his lives for the best.
The book is very well written and emotive, and I found myself able to connect with the characters immediately. I feel that it is a wonderful story which highlights both the struggles of special needs parents, but also celebrates the beauty and love with which their lives are filled.
Overall, a great read; Like No Other Boy is a touching story and one that I’m certain everyone will appreciate.

Like No Other Boy is a heart-wrenching tale of a single father and his autistic son as he discovers his son can connect with chimpanzees. Larry Center took on a tough topic that can be hard to understand if you are not a parent or educator of children with these types of development and cognitive delays and he rocked it. Mr. Center did his research and he did it well. His prose exquisitely portrays the frustration, the heartbreak, and the overwhelming love parents have for these children.

As an educator, I think this should be required reading for young educators to help them relate to the parents of the children like Tommy who might be in their classroom. The author captured those emotions and stress of parenting a child on the spectrum and dealing with other daily life stressors so perfectly. The novel is well-written and flows beautifully. It is easy to read and I was engaged the whole time. After a few chapters, I couldn’t put it down. Grab this book if you need a beautifully written story that pulls at your heart strings.

Like No Other Boy by Larry Center is an emotional read that hits so many levels of a unique family with exceptional needs. Chris and Cheryl Crutcher had one son, Tommy, and he was born with autism. Cheryl struggled with finding a cure, a solution, or a fix for her son that it tore their marriage apart. One weekend, Chris and Tommy visited the zoo when an amazing thing happened; Tommy's connection with a chimpanzee began to open his mind and speech to those around him. Chris is ecstatic, but Cheryl does not share his optimism and belief that Tommy is progressing. Can this father reach his son, get a job that pays his bills, and ward off his ex-wife before she does something drastic?

I loved this book, Like No Other Boy, as I see my own family members in little Tommy Crutcher. Larry Center does an amazing job with putting the fear, hope, and grief parents feel as they try to understand and help their children. I would highly recommend this book.

I loved this book, it was so heartwarming and emotional, I loved how the child bonded with the chimpanzees like he did, this was definitely a book that I would recommend to others. It was a great read and it had a great father-son relationship and how the father fought for his son. I felt sorry for the father and what happened, but this was a great read. I love books like these that make you feel so emotional or heartwarming that you can feel how the characters feel and all. Others may have their own opinions on this book, but this is mine. I loved this book and would also read it again. It was an emotional read, I felt sorry for the family more towards the end especially when the son went into a coma, but I was glad that everything seemed to turn out as okay as it could be towards the end of it. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a book that’s emotional but yet a fun read.

Like no other boy is a fictional roller coaster through the trials and tribulations of dealing with autism. Tommy, like most autistic little boys, does not relate to humans but in his case, he has a special relationship with chimpanzees. Like no other boy is a debuts novel written by Larry Eisenman Center.

Chris Crutcher takes his autistic son Tommy to the San Diego zoo where he is having difficulty keeping Tommy interested in any of the animals. They decide to take a rest on a nearby bench and pass by a Chimpanzee enclosure. Tommy suddenly starts responding to the Chimps who come over to the window and start signaling back and forth to Tommy. Chris who is amazed at Tommy’s awareness tells his ex-wife Cheryl. At first, Cheryl is excited and they all go to a nearby Research Institute to determine if Tommy actually does show signs of relating to the chimpanzees. Chris becomes very excited about Tommy’s progress. However, Cheryl becomes hesitant and takes an interest in another institute for Tommy’s treatment. Cheryl’s preferred institute is in Houston to where Chris cannot move because he is caring for his elderly father. As well, Chris is truly excited about the Chimpanzee therapy. Cheryl decides to fight for full custody of Tommy in order to move to nearby the Houston Institute. Is it possible that Tommy will lose access to his beloved Chimpanzees and Chris will lose access to Tommy?

The author does an exceptional job of describing autism and detailing some of its characteristics as he slowly unfolds the issues that parents deal with when raising their children. He expertly draws the reader into the whole picture of the difficulties associated with families dealing with autism.

At the same time, I am in awe of the incredible love these parents have for their son Tommy and the lengths they will go to help him. There are no evil people in this story. Everyone just wants to help so badly that they sacrifice their own wellbeing sometimes. The whole book is a seesaw of emotions but it is a very quick and very entertaining read.

I highly recommend this story to anyone that wants to learn more about the challenges of autism but, as well as, to those people that really like an emotional, highly charged novel. I'll give it a 5 on 5. I would like to thank and NetGalley and Splitrail Publishing for providing me with a digital copy of this novel. I provide in this review voluntarily

It's hard to know where to start. A review of any book is wholly subjective, for sure, but it is possible to react similarly to others who read in a open-minded and hearted way. The story itself is inspiring. I know it's possible to communicate with animals in a silent mind-to-mind and heart-to-heart way - on a totally different plane than the one we usually inhabit and communicate with other human beings. But communing with animals and understanding them at the human level (and have them likewise understanding us) is unproven.

Autism is not a disorder as some would have us believe. It involves a brain which is structured and wired differently to 'normal/regular' brains. It can cause problems with communication and many autistic people evince terrible reactions when others cannot get what they mean. Trying alternative therapies with animals is a good experiment.

Perhaps it's not beyond the bounds of possibility that a human can form a channel of understanding with one of our primate cousins. I do know that on a deep level that I can connect with animals, especially dogs and cats. For example, I remember meeting my late dog Milo with emotion-based communication by meeting his eyes and feeling a deep interior melding of minds, perhaps on a spiritual plane. No words needed. Perhaps this was what the author of this book was trying to convey. Chimp minds meeting on a deep foundational level with a human boy whose lack of proper verbal skills was alienating him from human beings and it what that which liberated Tommy and got him communicating with humans in a new way. Open-mindedness is required on the part of adult humans.

I recommend that potential readers look through the reviews given in Amazon.com

"With beautifully insightful narration Like No Other Boy equal parts tortured and heart-warming, showing the full spectrum of the fatherhood experience: successes, failures, dreams, and fears. By weaving in scientific concepts about communication barriers, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and humans' connections to animals, author Larry Center creates an optimistic story filled with hope."

Like No Other Boy by Larry Center is a story of the struggles of a father and how he overcomes unsurmountable barriers for his autistic son. Chris is a devoted son, a husband and a father but due to unfortunate circumstances he is the only support to his ailing father, caught up in divorce and in the custody battle of his son who is his only lifeline. Chris goes through a traumatic time but finds solace in his weekend visitation rights to his autistic son where during a visit to zoo discovers that his son is able to connect to the chimpanzees and has progression with his speech too with his father. A heartwarming story like no other that is bond to bring tears to the eyes.

I am bestowed with this book and it has given me an innumerable context to ponder on. The journey of Chris with his autistic son Tommy is heart rendering and it has taught me many things and most prominent being patient. The story also demonstrates the challenges that an autistic child goes through and its effect on families. I highly recommend this book to everyone for a story so emotional yet inspiring and uplifting too.

"Like No Other Boy" by Larry Center is a heartwarming and poignant novel that explores a father's deep love for his autistic son, who has a unique connection with chimpanzees. The author handles a range of emotional issues with finesse, including the challenges of raising an autistic child, marital problems stemming from communication barriers, navigating different treatment options, coping with shattered dreams, and legal battles over custody.

The novel offers much more than just a heartwarming animal story. It offers a realistic portrayal of the challenges that families face when raising a child with autism, and the emotional toll that it takes on them.

While the book will resonate with parents of autistic children, it is also a powerful read for anyone who wants to explore the complex emotions that families experience. The author's writing is both sensitive and nuanced, and the characters are well-drawn and realistic. Overall, "Like No Other Boy" is a moving and thought-provoking novel that will leave readers with a greater understanding of the power of love and the resilience of the human spirit.

When searching for words to describe Larry Center's "Like No Other Boy," the phrase "engaging narrative" comes to mind. From the outset, it's evident that Larry Center possesses a talent for skillfully delving into sensitive topics. The way he makes the subject matter resonate with readers is impressive. As a good friend of someone with an autistic son, this book helps me better relate and increases my level of empathy. I could never have imagined what both had to deal with. But this book paints a vivid picture of the challenges of those dealing with Autism. As a caveat It has been my experience that books that elevate understanding are not only impactful but necessary. This book fits this descriptor.

I discovered that "Like No Other Boy" presented an emotionally charged and moving depiction. Its ability to feel authentic, despite being a fictional narrative, is what's most astonishing. Larry Center deserves a debt of gratitude for sharing this creative work that has left an indelible impact on me and, as I am sure, others. "Like No Other Boy" is truly remarkable and highly recommended.

In San Diego, Chris Crutcher is in the battle of his life. He is fighting a fierce custody battle with his now ex wife over his 8-year-old autistic son Tommy. Tommy is happy in his life that is spent around the chimpanzees in the local primatology research center near him. Tommy finds a joy there that he can’t find with others. Chris does not want Tommy to lose this and therefore he fights his wife who wants to relocate herself and her son to Houston.
I found this story to be heartwarming, even through the tearful moments it inspired. Not many authors tell the story of divorce form the man’s perspective, so this is a much-needed point of view. Even better is the inclusion of a child that is on the autism spectrum and so broadens our horizons even more. I cannot say if the information about the autism is correct as I have no exposure to it myself, however, this is certainly a story to read if you are looking for tender and loving.

This book, Like no other boy by Larry Center, is a breath-taking story about an 8-year-old boy, Tommy, and his father, Chris Crutcher, who is going through a hard time with his divorce and the conditions his ex-wife is trying to win. So, winning this trial is a life-or-death situation for him because his only interest is to keep Tommy.
I have to say this book surprised me in many ways. The main thing that caught my attention is the fact that it is not quite common to see the “other side” where a dad opens up about how difficult the whole process is and how much he cares for his son to stay with him. Besides, the fact that he must learn how to communicate with Tommy that is autistic and reaches out to chimps at the local primatology research center. I was really moved by how the author can put so many feelings into words. The characters are very well described and the narrative itself is pure delight. It is 5 out of 5 stars for me!

A fathers love and strength, definitely worth reading!

Autism is a difficult and hard condition to live with and not only does it affect the person with this condition but also the family. Like many other conditions the way adults educate themselves, communicate and work together to provide the best care for the person with this particular condition will determine the future of the family and wellbeing.
Like No Other Boy by Larry Center gives us deep and perhaps even painful vision of having a child with autism. Chris is the living father of Tommy, an 8 year old who has a very difficult autism spectrum. Dealing with his divorce and only being able to see his son on weekends, Chris is determined to give his son the best life possible.
This book is truly touching and it will re Martin in your heart. I was deeply moved as I turned each page for Larry Center has an outstanding way of writing. I highly recommend this for anyone!

Heartfelt read with sincere emotion

This story is one that will definitely pull at a reader's heartstrings, and with good cause. The main character's son is autistic, which is difficult enough without the address stress of a complicated divorce and the thought that his soon-to-be ex-wife could take away the most important part of his life with a nasty custody battle. Along the journey, readers are introduced to the fact that though the young boy is unable to communicate vocally with other humans, he has an uncanny ability to communicate with chimpanzees. From there, the story develops into something more than one could imagine in the world of communication. I especially liked how this story provided so much insight into the world of autism and what that can mean for families who deal with the communication issues that can come along. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a heartfelt read that will boost some hope.

A moving and lovely story.
What a genuine, lovely story that I have read. The novel called “Like No Other Boy”, written by Larry Center, tells a moving story about the relationship of Chris Crutcher, a caring single father, and Tommy, his autistic child. Even though Chris has a harsh life, he strives to be a supportive father for Tommy all the time. While I was reading, I could empathize with Chris; the dialogues are so realistic that it is easy to feel inside the tale. Everything was possible due to the author's writing style; I really enjoyed the way the story is told. The bit that that I liked the most about the novel is the connection that Tommy has with animals. That is amazing! It is rather sad but at the same it leaves an important message of love, caring and success. I highly recommend it.

This was such a beautifully-told story. Like No Other Boy by Larry Center brought so many emotions in me. I found myself tearful in each line that I've read. The story was well-written and all those little details from a father's perspective describing his love to his son made me feel sentimental. The book basically entails hopefulness and unconditional love from a father.

For me it was kind of a challenging read because I am such a family oriented person and whenever I read something that is centered around families, I always feel connected to it. All throughout the book, I was rooting for the main character to win his battle and get the happiness he deserved. The book was truly an emotional ride as a whole, and it's one that I could not easily forget. I recommend this to all book readers!

Loved it!

I have a son who is on the spectrum, and when he was fairly young, I learned about Temple Grandin. In an effort to understand my son, I read almost everything she ever wrote. In one of her early books, she explains how she, an autistic person herself, always related to animals more easily than she did to people, and that was how she came to be a professor of animal science. So when I read this book, it wasn’t at all difficult for me to suspend disbelief, because I know it’s very likely that people on the spectrum can indeed understand and relate to animals in ways that we neurotypicals don’t. The boy Tommy is able to understand and communicate with the chimpanzees because his brain operates more like their brains do than like neurotypical human brains work. It takes a near-fatal accident for his mother to realize and accept that, although his father already knows, thanks to the scientists at the Weller Institute.

Some people will have a difficult time accepting the premise of this book and will see it as fantasy. I refer them to Dr. Grandin.

Read through NetGalley. I chose this book because one of my neighbors has a young boy that is autistic. He really keeps to himself so I don't know anything about his specific situation other than that he was diagnosed at about 2 or 3 years old and has been in special programs since. He is a young teen now and the family seems to be handling it well. This book really interested me. You hear so often that special needs people have some special "talent" (for lack of a better word) that far exceeds what most people have. That is certainly the case with Tommy in this book. I loved reading about his interactions with the chimps and the benefits he and the animals received from the interaction. If you are interested in autism and how it is manifested or in animal/human interaction, I would highly recommend this book.

"Anna and the Missing Child" by Brigitte Novalis is a very exciting and enchanting novel. The story undoubtedly created a surprising delight and a subtle balance of an imaginative and complex magical situation. The story is centered around Anna, a ten-year-old witch who is liked by all. There are several other characters who are also lively and sparkling in their own way. The author is truly a master in creating a very entertaining story with many colorful characters.

The characters are very beautifully described with full of energy and delight. The language used is also easily understandable and engaging. The writing was very exciting with a sprightly narrative voice. It contains many meaningful and evocative lessons not only for children but also for adults. The readers will be greatly engrossed in the fairy-tale-like world from the engaging description.

heartwarming and inspiring

A book like no other I have read before. It is a very heartwarming story about a boy and his fascinating and one-of-a-kind way to communicate with the world. The author did a fantastic job of having readers like me empathise with the characters of this story. It was a great writing style for this author both informative and heart-warming. I know some parents who would be able to easily relate to having a Tommy. These topics are hard to tackle correctly and the author did an amazing job of capturing the reader’s “me” attention with the plot and dialogues of the story. It may now be a fiction of how animals, especially chimps, have emotional connections with special kids but I am sure it might inspire future research. I pretty much enjoyed reading this book.
