This book by retired B.C. conservation officer Keith Rande is a genuine bona fide page turner. You don't have to be a hunter, fisher or even an outdoors person to really enjoy these anecdotes and adventures cloaked in unquestionable authenticity. The author pulls no punches in describing in colourful details the trials and tribulations that are an inescapable part of enforcing the laws and regulations aimed at protecting our wildlife and natural resources. He does it with humour, self-awareness, and a keen observation of all aspects of human nature, good and bad. A vivid description of being charged at very close range by a fearsome and enraged grizzly bear, and being injured by its claws and fangs, puts the reader on edge and brings him or her as close to the action as possible without actually physically witnessing the terrifying encounter. Through it all, the author's unwavering devotion and dedication to the protection of the exceptionally varied flora and fauna of the beautiful province of British Columbia is never in doubt. As one reads this book it soon becomes obvious that the great stories told therein are but the tip of the iceberg, many more are waiting in the aisles for the author to bring them to life in, hopefully, a forthcoming, follow-up book.

Keith Rande served the Conservation Officer Service of British Columbia and specifically the protection of our most valuable natural resources with integrity, dedication and good old-fashioned work ethic. He performed his duties over vast areas of country, often on his own, dealing with all manner of wildlife and offenders and amassed extraordinary experience and knowledge. Yet he writes his stories with humour and humility. From poachers to grizzly bears, these stories will amuse you, amaze you and some will terrify you. A great read.
