I just admit that I almost have up on this book. A terribly dated account of technology and the challenges of the church made me question how I would ever be prescribed this book. Immediately after that section, however, this book quickly redeemed itself.

Preaching is often seconded to a mere formality. A head nod to pop psychology or a meek expression of an opinion. Yet here John Stott places it in its rightful place as the very heart of church health by describing its beauty and its power. Great preaching produces great Christians.

Anyone who endeavours to become a preacher should read this work.

I had to read this book for my Homiletic's exam. It was compulsory and I thought that it would be "just another theoretical" book, not even being worthy of a review.
While reading the book I realized that this is more than theory. It involves the person as whole, helps to clarify problems related to Christian and pastoral identity, takes the reader to a sort of faith journey.
I recommend the book to all church people, for those who work in the church and also for those who only attend the services.
This book needs to be part of the identity of every Christian.

This is an easy read. This is not so much a theological exposition or defence on preaching but personal reflections and encouragement of an experienced pastor and preacher. We get to see some of the more personal thoughts of Stott on his ministry and preaching.
He gives various suggestions, not all of which I would necessary agree with, but nonetheless he makes some important points that are worth considering for any preacher.

Found this book hugely helpful. Scripture is "God's word written" and it needs to be proclaimed faithfully with courage and humility in a way that makes sense to those around us. Lots of great anecdotes and illustrations make it a great read.

Very good book. A brilliant book for preachers/church leaders. Dry and dated at times… i.e section on television but overall a lot of fantastic, important and wise ideas.

Maybe an updated version written by a respected modern, Christian author could be a good idea though, such as Andy Stanley.

I was struggling to understand why preaching is important. This book convinces me both from a Biblical, Theological and historical view point that Preaching is foundational for creating disciples.

This is the start of my journey to preaching. Bring humility and earnestness to the pulpit. Disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed.

Stott is a very intelligent man, well-spoken, knowledgable and well-versed in the English language. His book is addressed to those in Christian ministry, specifically the preaching ministry, yet it is written in a highly academic format. Stott’s way of arguing his point is to make a point and then reference someone in the history of the Church (whether from the Old Testament, New Testament or through Church history) often using more than one, to show how the things he says are normative. In the epilogue he speaks of opposition to the things he has written and concluded in the book, and, although he has a chapter on objections to preaching he doesn’t bring them up in other places in the book all too often.

Throughout the book he imagines the reader asking questions of the author, and goes on to answer these questions. In some instances I was surprised by how he knew those would be the very questions on my mind at the time (some times they seemed obvious, or unnecessary).

Certainly a powerful affirmation of the preaching ministry and the challenges it faced in the late twentieth century, and continues to face into the twenty-first. Stott is a fantastic writer, thinker and theologian, making his points very clear, almost unarguable.
