It hadn't rained in months in the isolated quiet town of Garmella, Arizona where cell phones are forbidden. And rain wasn't in the forecast.
Then one June night, a day after the opening of a massive sinkhole at the town's edge, torrential rain descends on Garmella.
The rain brings relief to the town, but that's not all that comes with the rain.
By morning, an ancient evil has consumed the town. An evil responsible for countless deaths and disappearances over the centuries.
Now, Ramon Thomas, sheriff of Garmella, and his deputy Allie, as well as a small group of survivors, must confront the evil before it spreads beyond Garmella to the rest of the world, threatening the destruction of civilization.
Christopher Coleman lives in Maryland with his wife and two children. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland with a degree in English Literature. A fan of classic and modern horror and thriller movies, his favorite movies are Rosemary's Baby and The Ring. When he's not writing fiction, you can find him reading, taking his kids to and from various sporting activities or watching horror movies with his wife who shares his affinity for the horror genre. His books will creep you out and leave you scared to turn off the lights and go to sleep.
Great potential, but execution was poor. And boring.
Plotwise the story was interesting...but nothing really didn't happen in the story. After the 40 percent mark I got bored as besides the first couple of chapters the death scenes had worn off (which I did think were quite engaging). I wasn't even offered a proper detective investigation to why or what. I felt everything was handed to me.
I didn't care about the characters and there was a lot of filler of trivia and not enough action. Writing could have been more structured from an objective point of view.
This is the second series I've read by Coleman but this one doesn't check all the boxes for me. In a nutshell, monsters arrive via a huge sinkhole in a small town that has a special restriction of no electronic transmissions because they have a fancy telescope. This means no radio, mobile phones, or internet.
Nearly all the main characters are cops who evade said monsters up to the end. Throw in a strange trio of people who can live nearly forever, know the monsters habits, and hire a local to use his radio for a few months to upset the locals. These people also plan to cover up the existence of the monsters by setting the town on fire via meth labs.
Anyway, this survival horror is good but just didn't keep me hooked. I had no problem sitting the book down for days on end. There is very little gore. Few horror elements, and I tired of the cops hunting the monsters and not the other way around. It's also disheartening how many of the actions the characters take are found out to be for nothing. The ending and how to defeat the monsters is also a bit of a letdown.
This kept me reading into the night! I love horror and this had all the right ingredients. The characters were brought to life (until some of them died), the creatures and situations were different and scary and the ending was fantastic. I have read several of this author's books and I continue to be impressed. I will definitely keep looking for more books by him.
Just an ok story. Not overly terrifying or scary. Lot of diction problems as well as errors remembering correct character names. Need better proof readers
First time reading Christopher Coleman and this was a decent read. Its a little too tame to classify it as a horror novel and for me it falls firmly into the sci-fi genre. As usual with these kinds of books, it needs some editing help from time to time, but nothing I can't get past. The story had some potential, and reminded me of a Dean Koontz book called Phantoms I read many years ago (that was much better and well worth checking out BTW) that had a similar premise of mass disappearances. Characters were serviceable, but not really interesting enough to make any solid connection with them. Didn't care for the language, so that dropped my rating a little
Anyway, this wasn't a bad effort, and its enough for me to try another from this author at least
This book was intense! This author has the ability of describing monsters in a way that gives the reader chills. Every encounter with the Arali had me shuddering. I was pulling for the small, ragtag group. With all the people vanishing, it took the others some time to figure out what to do with the children. The theory of aliens contacting earth through satellite dishes is kind of terrifying. Would we know what to do?
I received an "ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in exchange for an honest review"
It hadn't rained in the small town for ages. Everyone looked to the sky & wondered would it ever rain again. Much to their surprise & great delight it began to rain one night. As they celebrated something else came along with the rain & for that they would need much more than an umbrella. Maybe a tank or a heavy metal band. Maybe the most rare thing of all - innocence & love.
I am a huge fan of Christopher Coleman's Gretel series, and his They Came With the Snow series. Thus, I'm sad to say, that this book kind of fell short for me. Some of it felt forced, as though the various elements of the story and plot were sort of mashed together.
That said, I urge you to pick up the books I mentioned above. They are very well done.
My apologies to the author for the low rating, but I wanted to be honest.
Just imagine you haven't seen rain for a while and then all of a sudden, rain arrives but with bad intentions that start to escalate into something unimaginable where it leads you into damnation... Well, this book had it and I simply enjoyed Mr. Coleman's new work of "They Came with the Rain." I enjoy many of his work and this one was another immaculate story that will have you reading page after page without stopping. Incredible horror novel to have and read!
However….you know what ruffles my feathers? The last three or four chapters of a book suddenly reflect an urgency to finish telling the story….Kind of like the author is bored with the story. I find I need to go back and reread sections because I’m suffering from reader whiplash. Unfortunately that is the case more often than not. It complete spoils the end and breathes disappointment into the book.
This is an excellent book. I found it to be well written. It zipped along nicely without a 100 chapters before the action got going. The characters were believable and you rooted for them. I doubt anyone would find it a scary read but it was really enjoyable nevertheless. I would definitely recommend this book.
Garmella, Az is a small mountain town. It's normally a quiet town, and it's about to get much quieter. All it takes is what appears to be a very large sinkhole and a few hours of rain after months of drought. Suddenly, there are creatures of shadow and a lot less citizens. Who will prevail, humans or shadows? Loved it!
I gave this 3 stars because the creatures were interesting and different. Unfortunately the characters were stupid and not very likable. Exhausting to read how every character stood there and did nothing even after they saw the creatures. Those that were caught in the grips of the creatures had an excuse. The rest, not so much.
I had so much fun reading that book, it reminded me the fun I had when I was a kiddo, reading the new Stephen King book in the 70's (minus the long stories elaborating the life of all the characters)! A real page turner, well written, a lot of suspense, definitely recommended!
They came with the snow is a really good series. But I could have actually stopped after the first book because I thought it had a decent ending as a stand-alone novel. But then it continued and I really like the series. But I hope this one isn't a series because I thought it ended satisfactorily.
I read They came with the snow some time ago and was intrigued by this title This was just as interesting and more intense. Truly original content. The characters are very well described and essential to the development of the story. Would love to see another book added to this story
Could hardly put this one down! I was a little disappointed that it took until Chapter 4 to be introduced to a character that I could get emotionally invested in and who did not die right away, but it did not detract from the suspense or the overall story...just a matter of personal preference. Really great read if you like a page-turner!
I think I've read all of Coleman's books, and liked them all. I liked this one also. It was a page turner and I read it pretty quickly. Good read and had a captivating story, did'nt really get the ending. they (the telepathic creatures) never came upon total innocence before? And if they are telepathic why did they not pickup on the baby before.
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. A sinkhole appears and cuts off a small town, rain arrives after months without, and with it strange shapes cone from the hole, intent of destruction and knowing 'what is your evil?' Are they demons and who are the people who appear to be facilitating them? A good read and an interesting interpretation of hell on Earth.
This was okay. There were times it got needlessly repetitive re: the description of the creatures, over and over and over. And before you get to the end, it's pretty clear how the creatures are going to be defeated. Worth a read if you're in the mood for something that's kinda scary and definitely predictable.
I used to never give a book like this 5 stars What about Dickens or Hemingway? Well now I give Stars based on genre and wether the book is going for entertainment or something deeper. This is an entertainment book which is what it accomplished. It was fast-paced and enjoyable
I love rain. But that's not really the story. Interesting concept for this book. I liked most of the characters, the monsters, the town. But I never felt fully invested and didn't much care about those who died. I did enjoy it enough that I will read another book by the author.
I loved the way it kept the suspense of what would happen next. Who would have thought by telling you worst sin would save you from these monsters. They thrived on our sins. Knowing they would get stronger and you would live a long life would you give up your sin for a life of dam nation from God. A baby's purity saved them. A must read.
The beginning of this book was like many horror movies with a pair of teens indulging their hormonal urges. I nearly stopped reading, but I'm glad I didn't. Once the teens were gone, the story caught fire and became very exciting. Ending was satisfying also.
A small town. A radio telescope. A drought. A sinkhole that blocks the only road in-and-out. Believable characters, fast pace, and an original evil, makes for another page turning/horror from author Christopher Coleman. Highly recommended.
Another fantastic page turner from Christopher Coleman. I loved the horror, it was so intense that I jumped if someone disturbed me whilst I was reading it. I highly recommend this book and all of his other books.
